Board of Education Monthly Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Wicomico County Board of Education will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the Board of Education Office auditorium, Mt. Hermon Road and Long Avenue, Salisbury. Among the items on the agenda: first reading on a draft Wicomico County dress code; a decision on the scheduling of commencement exercises in 2011 (revision to 2010-11 school calendar); and a decision on how to make up the Feb. 3 snow day. The Board will also meet in a work session from 10 a.m.-noon to continue working on the fiscal year 2011 budget; work sessions are open to the public. 410-677-4561.

Quilting in the Beaver’s Den
Beaver Run Elementary School

From 8:30-9:30 every Thursday morning, approximately 16 adults gather to work on a quilt with squares representing the Beaver Run Elementary School family. These volunteer quilters can be parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, grandparents and special friends. 410-677-5101.

Technology Fair
Mardela Middle and High

The Mardela Middle and High School Technology Fair will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the school media center. Rules and information on the Technology Fair are available from English teachers or at http://mmhstechfestival.wikispaces.com/; students must have a teacher sponsor to enter. Many students and parents are expected to attend, along with representatives from most of the businesses that contributed to the fair. Light refreshments will be served. 410-677-5142.

Hoops for Hearts
Glen Avenue Elementary

On Feb. 12, a Hoops for Heart Celebration will occur at Glen Avenue Elementary School. Throughout February in physical education classes, students are learning about the importance of having a healthy heart and the effects of not having a healthy heart on health and overall well being. Along with that, students have been involved in a basketball unit where they are being taught the fundamentals and rules of the game.

Said physical education teacher Derek Jarmon, “It's very important for our learners to realize the importance of giving back to the community as well as the fact that their collaborative efforts are helping to save the lives of many people. This fundraiser has a special place in my family’s heart. My younger brother, Cameron L. Jarmon, was born with a heart defect in 1996. Cameron had to receive two open heart surgeries at such a young age and numerous trips to Johns Hopkins Hospital for checkups. On Sept. 26, 2001, my brother passed away at the age of 5. It devastated my family and me, but from our pain came CLJ Baskets with Love Inc. a non-profit organization that delivers gift baskets fill with toiletries and such for the parents of sick children in nearby hospitals. For me, this (Hoops for Hearts) is another way I can share my brother's legacy, help to save lives, and help our learners realize the importance of living a healthy life and volunteering in your community.”

On Feb. 12, students will celebrate their contribution to helping save lives by participating in Hoops for Hearts, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. (This is similar to the Jump Rope for Heart events many schools will engage in this month to boost heart health awareness and raise money for the American Heart Association.) Each grade level will have a specific time to go to the gym to participate in various basketball drills and fitness activities with the physical education teachers and other members of the staff at Glen Avenue. These times run from 12-3 p.m., with a staff vs. students basketball game from 3-3:30 p.m. Students who bring in the most donations for the American Heart Association will play in this game. 410-677-5806.

JMB’s 12th annual Rock & Roll Revival
Wicomico High School Auditorium

Tickets are on sale now for this showcase of Clipper talent. Students sing, dance, play instruments, and work in many areas behind the scenes to put on this highly successful show, which this year will be on the Wicomico High School Auditorium stage due to the construction at Bennett. Show directors are Christie and Larry Wersen, and all proceeds benefit the JMB PTSA. Shows will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, Saturday, Feb. 13 (this show is almost sold out), Friday, Feb. 19, and Saturday, Feb. 20, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, and Sunday, Feb. 21. Tickets are $15 and are on sale now at the PNC Bank at Beaglin Park Drive and Snow Hill Road. Tickets may also be purchased at the Wicomico High School auditorium during rehearsals from 6-8:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Children’s Book Author Visit
Salisbury University

The Eastern Shore Regional Library, in partnership with Salisbury University and the public libraries of the Eastern Shore, present An Evening with Laura Vaccaro Seeger starting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall at Salisbury University. She is the author of the Caldecott Honor book “First the Egg” and the critically acclaimed “Dog and Bear” series. There will be a presentation and discussion, followed by a book signing and reception. This event is free and open to the public. Parenting Matters: Raising Successful Children

Looking for tips on how to help your children succeed academically and socially – in school and in the community? Join the MD PIRC and the Eastern Shore Regional Advisory Committee for an exciting, wonderful and free event for parents and family members (see flyer).

The Eastern Shore’s second Parenting Matters: Raising Successful Children conference will be held from 8:15 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Child care, programming for young people, and breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost.

Special features of the conference include: ‘Raising Successful Learners in Elementary School’ workshop led by Wicomico Teachers of the Year Debbie Wilkins and Susan Cullen; One Stop Job Market Mobile Van; and Paying for College seminar.
In addition, there will be door prizes for families, a Youth Leadership Academy with fun learning activities for youth (ages 6-14), Spanish language interpreters for parents, and special music for the opening session by Wicomico County’s very own band -- The Edgeucators.
