Is Lethal Force Justified when Defending Against... The Police?

New York City – A viral video shows NYPD officers assaulting a family during a home invasion. Officers force their way into a home without a warrant, claiming that somebody had told them that a fugitive was inside the home. In future, bank robbers should say that somebody had told them that there was a bomb inside the vault, and that they were just there to defuse it.

No search warrant, they were not in a pursuit, there was no fugitive there, and they assaulted the homeowner’s daughter anyway. There was no legal reason for them to enter the home occupied by three women. With the rising number of NYPD cops accused and convicted of rape in recent years, the women in the home obviously had good reason to be cynical about the intentions of a group of over-excited brutes, as they broke in and assaulted one of them.

They lied about the emergency need to search a home without a warrant: searching the home without a warrant while assaulting the homeowner’s daughter is a crime, marking them as criminals.

Should a homeowner be allowed to defend himself from the police? With lethal force? Police accountability organization Cop Block produced an informative video about the subject, embeded at the bottom of this article.

No sane person would advocate opening fire on cops, but when rogue cops behave like they are a law unto themselves, intent on harming you, and as all their fellows join in to protect them, quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who watches the watchmen? It used to be the police who would reign themselves in. That leaves that unsavory task to the people who pay their salaries: ordinary Americans.

Legendary Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Has a Message for the ‘Rioters’ in His City

Legendary Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis issued a passionate “message for the rioters in Baltimore” on Tuesday, imploring young kids to “get off the streets.” The video had been viewed over 4 million times on Facebook within a couple of hours.

“No way. No way. No way this can happen in our city,” Lewis said. “No! Young kids, you’ve got to understand something: get off the streets. Violence is not the answer. Violence is never the answer.”

Referring to Freddie Gray, who died of a serious spine injury while in Baltimore police custody, Lewis proclaimed, “We don’t do nothing for him doing this.”

Cruz Warns of 'Liberal Fascism' Targeting Christians

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Saturday said Democrats had gone to extremes in their persecution of Christians.

“Today’s Democratic Party has decided there is no room for Christians in today’s Democratic Party,” he said at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition summit in Waukee, Iowa.

“There is a liberal fascism that is going after Christian believers,” the 2016 GOP presidential candidate continued.

“It is heartbreaking,” Cruz argued. “But it is so extreme, it is waking people up.”

Cruz said same-sex marriage had produced rabid zealotry in Democratic ranks. This ideology, he argued, was excluding people of faith.

“Today’s Democratic Party has become so radicalized for legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states that there is no longer any room for religious liberty,” he said.

The Texas lawmaker said this stance was against America’s traditional values. Religious liberty, Cruz claimed, was one of the nation’s founding principles.

“We were founded by men and women fleeing religious persecution,” Cruz declared.

Emergency Curfew In Baltimore

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has instituted a city-wide curfew that will go into effect today, April 28, starting at 10:00 pm. The curfew will be in place for seven days, at which point the mayor will determine if additional days are needed.

Details of the curfew are as follows:
  • The night-time curfew applies for all citizens (with exceptions of emergency personnel and those commuting to and from work for essential functions, including students traveling to/from classes)
  • Non-essential business operations should be suspended from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. This includes restaurants, entertainment venues and bars, which should be closed during these times. Visitors and patrons should plan enough travel time before the curfew begins.
  • For essential business operations, employees traveling to and from work during the curfew should have a valid picture ID (presumably a driver’s license) and a document from their employer stating their need to work during curfew hours with dates and employee hours.
  • Drivers or individuals may be stopped by law enforcement and should be prepared with the information above to avoid arrest. Violation of the curfew is a misdemeanor.

The full text of the curfew follows.

Sen. Warren: Declassify Trade Deal Details

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is asking President Obama to make public classified information in the international trade deal that he’s asking Congress to ‘fast track’ -- the latest incident in which the populist, first-term Democratic senator appears critical of the president’s relationship with Wall Street and big business.

At issue is the Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as the TPP -- a significant deal with 11 Pacific Rim nations that aims to create a free trade zone in the Asia-Pacific region.

A letter dated Saturday and co-signed by fellow Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, was written in response to Obama's suggestion that critics of the TPP, specifically Warren, were wrong about the trade deal and “dishonest” when they claim the TPP is a secret deal.

However, Warren and Brown argue in the letter that by deeming the draft text classified and from public view, the Obama administration has, in fact, made the deal secret.

“As a result of your administration’s decision, it is currently illegal for the press, experts, advocates, or the general public to review the text of this agreement,” the letter says.

Warren claims in the letter that corporate executives and lobbyists have had opportunities to not only read it, but to shape the terms, and calls for the American people to have the same ability.

Free Skin Cancer Screening at Peninsula Regional Medical Center

Free skin cancer screenings will be held at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on May 4, 2015 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, call 410-543-7006.

The screenings are part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and teach prevention of skin cancer – May 4 is Melanoma Monday, an official day of awareness for the most deadly form of skin cancer. More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.

“The key to successful treatment of most types of skin cancer is early detection and treatment,” said Thomas M. DeMarco, MD, Medical Director of the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and those rates are higher on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The Baltimore jail that was run by a gang

One inmate at Baltimore’s city jail fathered five children with four corrections officers

BALTIMORE –
The Baltimore City Detention Center is old. It was in business before Abraham Lincoln was president. Ghosts are everywhere – in the concertina wire lacing the sky, the ancient stone façade, the trash swirling on the sidewalk, and the white door with a small barred window set hard on the street. It was once said that inmates who walked up the steps and through that jail door exited on a gurney.

The jail was also, until recently, run by a gang.

“Everything is drugs. The gangs were just, basically, the face of the drug dealers," said Ralph Johnson, who was a corrections officer at BCDC for 18 years and a supervisor for most of that time. "…Nobody cared. You're going to an environment where people are trying to survive. People are trying to make money. People are just trying to stay out the way.”

BALTIMORE RIOTS EXPLODE LEFTIST RACE MYTHS

As rioters rushed through the streets of Baltimore, torching police vehicles, looting local stores, and attacking police officers and reporters alike, some intrepid leftists justified the activity.

Marc Lamont Hill stated on MSNBC, “There shouldn’t be calm tonight. I think there can be resistance to oppression, and when resistance occurs, you can’t circumscribe resistance.” He added that the riots should be called “uprisings. The city is not burning because of those protesters. The city is burning because the police killed Freddie Gray.” Sally Kohn of CNN tweeted, “Looting is a real shame. But FAR MORE shameful is pattern of police violence against black community! Perspective, people. #BaltimoreRising.”

Baltimore’s riots have prompted a state of emergency in the city, as well as the calling of the National Guard. But the riots should also demonstrate conclusively that leftist myths about what drives race riots are just that: myths. It turns out that all the excuses given for the riots in Ferguson simply do not apply to the situation in Baltimore.

Photos Reveal How Plus-Size Clothes Actually Look on Customers, And It's Not the Same As Those Models

"I feel like this dress is just trying to bully me into buying Spanx."

Buying plus-sized clothes is a tricky business. Most options are only available online, so it's a feat in and of itself to get the right size for your body shape. And while the models always make the clothes look great, BuzzFeed editors Sheridan Watson and Kristin Chirico made a big discovery: Many brands have smaller models use padding to fill out the plus-size clothes, making it all an illusion and a look that "might be more perfect than those plus-size bodies actually found in nature."

So the two decided to shatter the deceptive mirror and spent a day trying on items from different brands (including Forever 21, Torrid, Asos, and Fashion to Figure) to show how they look on the model versus how they appear in real life.

Now keep in mind that the ladies are two different heights and sizes—Kristin is 5-foot-3 while Sheridan is 5-foot-11—and they grabbed whatever sizes were recommended to them based on each brands' sizing chart. So really, they got as close as any other shopper would when buying online. And this, my friends, is what followed:

National Zoo completes 2 artificial inseminations of panda

WASHINGTON (AP) - Scientists at the National Zoo have artificially inseminated female giant panda Mei Xiang in an attempt to breed her with a panda in China.

The zoo said Monday that a team of reproductive scientists performed two artificial inseminations. The first one was completed Sunday, and the second procedure was done Monday morning.

For the first time, scientists used semen from a panda living in China named Hui Hui. Experts determined they would be a strong genetic match. Hui Hui has not sired any cubs.

Breaking: Baltimore Mayor Key Player in Obama’s Federal Takeover of Local Police

Mayor's link to Justice Dept. explains why she gave rioters "space to destroy"

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who gave rioters “space to destroy” property and reportedly told police to stand down, was a key player in the Justice Dept.’s plan to expand federal control over local law enforcement.

Rawlings-Blake was one of three mayors who provided broad input into President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, which advocates the federalization of police departments across the country by forcing them to adhere to stricter federal requirements when they receive funding.

“The federal government can be a strong partner in our efforts in build better relationships between the police and community,” she said in written testimony before the task force.

That would explain her inaction to stop the rioting when it began: by allowing it to spiral out of control, the mayor and her friends at the Justice Dept. could use the unrest to justify the expansion of federal power into local law enforcement, which would also allow her to receive more funding.

Drought Widens Economic Divide for Californians

COMPTON, Calif. — Alysia Thomas, a stay-at-home mother in this working-class city, tells her children to skip a bath on days when they do not play outside; that holds down the water bill. Lillian Barrera, a housekeeper who travels 25 miles to clean homes in Beverly Hills, serves dinner to her family on paper plates for much the same reason. In the fourth year of a severe drought, conservation is a fine thing, but in this Southern California community, saving water means saving money.

The challenge of California’s drought is starkly different in Cowan Heights, a lush oasis of wealth and comfort 30 miles east of here. That is where Peter L. Himber, a pediatric neurologist, has decided to stop watering the gently sloping hillside that he spent $100,000 to turn into a green California paradise, seeding it with a carpet of rich native grass and installing a sprinkler system fit for a golf course. But that is also where homeowners like John Sears, a retired food-company executive, bristle with defiance at the prospect of mandatory cuts in water use.

“This is a high fire-risk area,” Mr. Sears said. “If we cut back 35 percent and all these homes just let everything go, what’s green will turn brown. Tell me how the fire risk will increase.”

2nd State Resisting Militarization of Cops

A second state has joined a growing effort to curb the militarization of local police departments by the federal government.

WND reported last month New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed into law a bill that bans local law-enforcement agencies from obtaining nightscopes, military assault rifles, grenade launchers and 14-ton Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicles through a federal program without local oversight.

The issue drew national attention when law-enforcement officers in Ferguson, Missouri, outfitted like an invading army, were deployed against violent protesters outraged by the shooting death of black teen Michael Brown by a white police officer.

Now, according to the Tenth Amendment Center, Montana’s governor has signed into law a bill that “would heavily diminish the effect of federal programs that militarize local police.”

The bill, HB330, bans state or local law enforcement from receiving significant classes of military equipment from the Pentagon’s “1033 Program.”

It was approved 46-1 in the state Senate and 79-20 in the House. Democrat Gov. Steve Bullock signed it.

In Every City In America There Are People Ready To Riot, Loot And Set Things On Fire

The city of Baltimore has been transformed into an “absolute war zone“, and the governor of Maryland has declared a state of emergency as the rioting in “Charm City” continues to escalate. The funeral for Freddie Gray has unleashed a firestorm of violence, and none of it is going to do anyone any good. To their credit, some of the leaders of the African-American community are standing up and loudly condemning the violence. They know that smashing cars, throwing rocks at police and looting stores is not going to solve anything. But just like we saw in Ferguson, there are lots of people out there that are ready to riot, loot and set things on fire at the drop of a hat – all they need is an opportunity. The social decay that has been eating away at the foundations of our society for generations is now manifesting in some very ugly ways. We have raised an entire generation of young people in a “value free” environment, and now we are getting to experience some of the consequences of our foolishness. And what we are witnessing in Baltimore right now is just the start. Eventually, we are going to see scenes like this all over the nation.

Smashed, looted and burned by the mob

Smashed, looted and burned by the mob: Inside the destruction of Baltimore as shopkeepers tell how they fled burning shops and one says he called police 50 times - and nobody came

The full extent of the damage done by the violence and rioting in Baltimore is graphically revealed today.

Dozens of shops, businesses and gas stations were burned and ransacked across the city as the streets were turned into a 'war zone'.

Shopkeepers told Daily Mail Online that they fled in terror as looters rampaged in as they were still inside - and stole everything.

A family of four had to flee their apartment above the liquor store they owned when it was set ablaze underneath them.

And a gas station owner said that he had lost $50,000 after his ATM was looted and his store ransacked.

Rajneesh Nagpal, 39, was furious that he had called the police 50 times but nobody came to help him.

Governor Hogan Addresses Violence In Baltimore

Muslim Imam in Tennessee PREACHES “Jews & Christians are Filthy, Their Lives & Property can be Taken in Jihad by Muslims” in America

What this famous and revered Imam, Abu Ammaar Yasir Qadhi, preaches goes beyond hate speech… it’s a mission of purification through promoting a religious extermination order. This Imam openly preaches it and we’ve got it on tape.

Abu Ammaar Yasir Qadhi, a Memphis Imam based in Tennessee, preaches openly about what Islam truly is. He makes no bones about thinking that anyone other than a Muslim doesn’t deserve anything and are less than Muslims. In fact, part of Yasir Qadhi’s preaching includes rhetoric that says non-Muslims lives are forfeit and their property is legal for Muslims to take in jihad, (and this would include women as sex slaves) Recently Yasir Qadhi said that “Jews and Christians filthy, their lives and property can be taken in jihad by the Muslims.”

Yasir Qadhi is not only a Memphil Imam, but is is also the Dean of Academic Affairs at the Al-Maghrib Institute. He is a hafiz (has memorized the Qur’an) and he has an M.A. in the Islamic Creed and a B.A. in Islamic Sciences from Islamic University of Medina, as well as a master’s and a doctorate in Islamic Studies from Yale. During a lecture on Shirk, or polytheism, Yasir Qadhi said that Jews and Christians are mushrikoon, or polytheists, because they have made partners with Allah. From Yasir Qadhi’s perspective, only Muslims are monotheists.

He also claims that it is the responsibility of every single human being to bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and him alone. Now pay attention here. Yasir Qadhi now will tell you what the result and command that stems from this twisted principle.

“And it is because of this same principle of monotheism that the prophet has been commanded to do jihad.”

OK, now we’re getting somewhere. Did all of you alleged “moderate” Muslims out there get that? Of course, you did. You know this. You know jihad is not just some internal struggle. It isn’t about losing weight or getting in shape or some personal goal to be obtained. It is a holy war to advance the caliphate, the Islamic State. While “jihad is not the goal”, Qadhi says, “it is the means. It is a means to establish monotheism on the land,”. Let me translate that for any who are still skeptical and buying into the lie that Islam is peaceful. Jihad is a means, a violent means, to an end, or goal, where Islam dominates the United States.

Military FINALLY Admits ‘Martial Law’ Test Runs Planned Throughout U.S. This Summer

Newly-leaked military documents reveal what the United States government is no longer denying: that elite branches of the military are currently preparing for “training exercises” throughout the U.S. southwest which simulate martial law scenarios.

The document reveals the training exercises are being conducted under the name “Operation Jade Helm.”

The exercises are scheduled to begin this July and continue for eight weeks. The operation will include the participation of 1,200 troops from the the Green Berets, Navy SEALS and Special Operations from the Air Force and Marines.

While the military acknowledges the leaked information is legitimate, they have termed the exercises “Realistic Military Training” and confirm that these exercises will be carried out in towns in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas as well as Utah. For whatever reason, the focus seems to be on the U.S. southwest in particular.

In the case of Texas, the military is being the most forthright about the exercises – admitting they are in the works and asking Texans living in close proximity to the operation to report anything which the military has characterized as “suspicious activity” during the exercises.

Lynch faces Baltimore riots on Day 1

Attorney General Loretta Lynch barely had the chance to settle into her new office at the Justice Department before she was asked to take up a racially and politically charged topic: the violent and escalating riots in Baltimore.

Obama spoke earlier with Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who has struggled to contained protests that turned ugly after the funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of a spinal injury on April 19 while in police custody.

Florida Cop Literally Just Shot Unarmed African American With His Hands Up, Begging Not To Be Shot

Another Florida police officer has shot an unarmed African American.

This time, the Florida officer shot and critically wounded a 28-year-old man early Monday during an investigation into a stolen car in Orlando.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings had little to say about the case besides this, but witnesses claim that the victim, Cedric Bartee, literally had his hands up, begging Sergeant Robert McCarthy not to shoot.

Bartee had his hands in the air, but in spite of this damning detail, during a press conference Monday, Demings said, “I ask everyone to not rush to judgment and allow the investigation to be completed.”

Unarmed Man Shot and Killed by Police Begged: ‘I Don’t Want To Die Today’

Fairfax County, Virginia city officials seem to have tried to use the Super Bowl as a distracting cover for their massive information dump of files related to the the murder of a citizen by a law enforcement officer.

The files on the shooting death of John Geer were gathered late last Friday night, then the county quietly released around 11,000 pages ofdocuments, audio and video files related to the August 2013 shooting death of Geer.

The documents can all be found online at the official Fairfax Citywebsite.

It’s been nearly 17 months since John Geer bled to death after being shot in his doorway by a Fairfax County Police Officer on August 29 2013. Geer had been standing, unarmed, with his hands his head on the doorframe, speaking with police officers for 50 minutes when one of them inexplicably fired one shot into his chest. When the SWAT team pushed into his house with an MRAP an hour later, John Geer was lying behind the door, dead.

The rally was scheduled in response to a viral video last week that showed people walking on a U.S. flag as part of a protest against racism. The rally offered an opportunity for people to show their support of the American flag.

Protests went on at the university all week against the disrespectful treatment of the flag; after consulting with police, the university’s leadership announced on Thursday that it would close normal business operations in anticipation of the Friday rally.

On Twitter Friday, the university said the rally had been peaceful. Demonstrators weren’t allowed on campus, but instead filled the streets nearby.

Al Sharpton to Visit Baltimore Over Custody Death, Riots Read Latest Breaking News from Newsmax.com http://www.newsmax.com/US/Al-Sharpton-Baltimore-Freddie-Gray-death/2015/04/27/id/641090/#ixzz3Ybd7pgy9 Urgent: Rate Obama on His Job Performance. Vote Here Now!

The Rev. Al Sharpton is jumping into the controversy over a Baltimore man's death from injuries he suffered while in police custody, announcing Monday that he'll visit the riot-torn city this week and is planning a march next month.

Freddie Gray, 25, died April 19, a week after he suffered spinal cord injuries while in custody, and Sharpton says that's when activists and clerics first urged him to visit the city, the Baltimore Sun reports.
"I have been asked by many in the Baltimore area since day one to get involved in the justice for Freddie Gray movement," Sharpton said. But he says he resisted getting involved until news that a report on Gray's death might not be made public this week.

The Sun reports that Police Commissioner Anthony Batts has said police expect to present a report on Gray's death to the state attorney's office by Friday, though it's unclear whether it will be made public.

"I am saddened and disappointed that there now may not be a report released on May 1," said Sharpton, who heads the Harlem-based National Action Network. "It is concerning to me that a deadline that the police themselves had set and announced they have now conveniently changed."

Riots in Baltimore Raise Questions About Police Response

National Guard troops fanned out through the city, shield-bearing police officers blocked the streets and firefighters doused still-simmering blazes early Tuesday as a growing area of Baltimore shuddered from riots following the funeral of a black man who died in police custody.

The violence that started in West Baltimore on Monday afternoon — within a mile of where Freddie Gray was arrested and placed into a police van earlier this month — had by midnight spread to East Baltimore and neighborhoods close to downtown and near the baseball stadium.

It was one of the most volatile outbreaks of violence prompted by a police-involved death since the days of protests that followed the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black man who was shot and killed during a confrontation with a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, last summer.

At least 15 officers were hurt, including six who remained hospitalized late Monday, police said. Two dozen people were arrested.

Gay-Rights Skeptic Roberts Urged to Make High Court History

When three of his U.S. Supreme Court colleagues said two years ago that same-sex marriage wasn’t a constitutional right, Chief Justice John Roberts left himself room to maneuver.

Roberts declined to join that group, and that decision will put him in focus Tuesday when the court hears arguments in a historic clash that may legalize gay marriage nationwide.

With Roberts uncommitted, some advocates are hoping that the nation’s highest judicial officer will place his imprimatur on a pro-marriage ruling. Should the court back same-sex marriage it would cap a transformation in the rights of gays over the past dozen years, bringing weddings to the last 14 states where they are banned.

“His vote is in play,” said Judith Schaeffer, vice president of the Constitutional Accountability Center, which backs marriage rights. “I don’t think people should write him off.”

Alveda King: Baltimore Mayor Is Not Thinking

Alveda King, niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke say Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake may have encouraged rioting that broke out Monday on the streets of that city.

"I've made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech," Rawlings-Blake said in a Saturday night press conference.

"It's a very delicate balancing act, because while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well."

Martin O'Malley Cancels Paid Speeches as Baltimore Hit by Rioting

Martin O'Malley, who formerly served as mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland, has canceled a series of overseas paid speeches in light of the rioting in the city, Politico reports.

"I’m saddened that the city I love is in such pain this night," O’Malley said in a prepared statement. "All of us share a profound feeling of grief for Freddie Gray and his family. We must come together as one city to transform this moment of loss and pain into a safer and more just future for all of Baltimore’s people."

Gray died in police custody nine days ago, sparking days of protests that culminated in rioting and looting following Gray's funeral on Monday.

GoFundMe Blocks Fundraiser For Christian Bakery

In the wake of what many are viewing as a crushingly punitive and unfair judgment, former bakery owners Aaron and Melissa Klein were ordered by administrative judge Alan McCullough to pay $135,000 in fines to a lesbian couple. The Kleins declined to bake a wedding cake for the couple due to their religious beliefs.

Almost immediately, supporters set up a GoFundMe page on behalf of the family. Within seven hours, at approximately 6:30 pm Pacific time, it had received nearly $80,000 in funding.

An hour later, it had topped $100,000.

Then abruptly, at approximately 9:10 pm Pacific time, when the fund had a bit over $109,000 dollars, the account was closed.

In a statement regarding their decision to close the account, GoFundMe wrote: “After careful review by our team, we have found the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions. The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal. While a different campaign was recently permitted for a pizzeria in Indiana, no laws were violated and the campaign remained live. However, the subjects of the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign have been formally charged by local authorities and found to be in violation of Oregon state law concerning discriminatory acts. Accordingly, the campaign has been disabled.”

However, a fast search through GoFundMe confirms the fundraising site has many requests for financial assistance from those facing legal actions, including criminal convictions.

The Stream reports, “A competitor of Sweet Cakes by Melissa … contacted GoFundMe to alert the crowd-funding company that the Kleins had violated the terms of service.

She complained: ‘This business has been found GUILTY OF DISCRIMINATION and is being allowed to fundraise to pay their penalty. The GoFundMe terms of service address hate speech, bigotry, criminal activity and sexism among other things in their campaign … The amount of money they have raised in a matter of a few hours by thousands of anonymous cowards is disgusting.‘”

John Oliver calls Dr. Oz "the worst person in scrubs who has ever been on television"

The last two weeks have undoubtedly been tough on Dr. Oz. First, critics sent a letter to Columbia University questioning whether the surgeon should keep his faculty position in light of the dubious science he often promotes on his widely watched TV show. Then Oz fought back — on his show, in magazine articles, and in on-air interviews. But instead of addressing his misuses of science, Oz talked mostly about ... civil liberties.

"I know I have irritated some potential allies," he wrote in Time magazine on Thursday. "No matter our disagreements, freedom of speech is the most fundamental right we have as Americans. We will not be silenced."

Last night, HBO's John Oliver eviscerated Oz for his ad hominem arguments.

U.S. top court throws out Obamacare contraception ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday revived religious objections by Catholic groups in Michigan and Tennessee to the Obamacare requirement for contraception coverage, throwing out a lower court decision favoring President Barack Obama's administration.

The justices asked the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider its decision that backed the Obama administration in light of the Supreme Court's June 2014 ruling that allowed certain privately owned corporations to seek exemptions from the provision.

Obama's healthcare law, known as Obamacare, requires employers to provide health insurance policies that cover preventive services for women including access to contraception and sterilization.

Various challengers, including family-owned companies and religious affiliated nonprofits that oppose abortion and sometimes the use of contraceptives, say the requirement infringes on their religious beliefs.

Washington teacher tackles shooter, averts tragedy

SEATTLE - A student fired off two shots inside a Washington state high school on Monday and was tackled by a teacher before anyone was hurt, averting a potentially deadly tragedy, police and students said.

The 16-year-old student, armed with a revolver, shot off two rounds that struck the ceiling inside a stairwell between the first and second floors of North Thurston High School in Lacey, just outside Olympia, Lacey police commander Joe Upton said.

A government teacher at the school, identified as Brady Olson, tackled the male student before more shots could be fired, and police took the teen into custody just before 8 a.m., authorities said. Nobody was hurt.

The incident marked the latest in a growing number of school shootings that have sparked a national conversation about school safety, and came months after a student opened fire at another Washington state high school, killing four people before turning the gun on himself.

"I reacted in a way that any other teacher would react and at the sound of a gunshot, ... going toward the sound of gunfire rather than away," Olson said in a statement, adding that at least three other staff members had headed toward the shooter.

Panicked students fled the building after hearing the shots, local broadcaster KOMO reported.

Salisbury-Wicomico County Fire Service Discussion To Be Held In Secret – Now, That’s Real “Transparency”

If any public matter should be resolved entirely by discussion held in open meetings, it's the fire service funding situation that we've been reporting even before Messrs. Culver and Ireton agreed to negotiate a reasonable agreement to increase County funding of the City’s fire department to fairly compensate for the service that it provides. Every single resident of Wicomico County has a dog in this fight.

But, according to a report, that meeting won’t be open to the public – either to attend or to follow it on PAC 14 – because the County wants to meet in secret.

Our first thought was to urge the City to insist on an open meeting and refuse to meet in behind a closed door, but the subject is much too important for delay. So we are urging Bob Culver to allow at least the media, including a representative of Sbynews, to attend, even if it's too late to hold the meeting at a place that’s large enough to accommodate the public and to have the meeting on PAC 14 (live, if possible).

Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Population Shows Modest Improvement

Adult females are no longer depleted, but remain at low levels

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources today released the 2015 Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey results, which showed the abundance of spawning-age females was 101 million, a substantial rise from 2014 when adult females were considered depleted. Despite the increase, the number of adult females remains well below the peak abundances observed in 2010 and 2011 and below the established target level of 215 million crabs.

Juvenile crabs increased 35 percent from 2014, and more than doubled from the record low in 2013. The 2015 juvenile abundance of 269 million crabs is just above the 26 year average of 261 million. The total abundance of crabs — which include juveniles, and adult males and females – was approximately 411 million. The crabbing harvest remained at a safe level for the seventh consecutive year.

Top scientists start to examine fiddled global warming figures

The Global Warming Policy Foundation has enlisted an international team of five distinguished scientists to carry out a full inquiry

Last month, we are told, the world enjoyed “its hottest March since records began in 1880”. This year, according to “US government scientists”, already bids to outrank 2014 as “the hottest ever”. The figures from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were based, like all the other three official surface temperature records on which the world’s scientists and politicians rely, on data compiled from a network of weather stations by NOAA’s Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN).

But here there is a puzzle. These temperature records are not the only ones with official status. The other two, Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) and the University of Alabama (UAH), are based on a quite different method of measuring temperature data, by satellites. And these, as they have increasingly done in recent years, give a strikingly different picture. Neither shows last month as anything like the hottest March on record, any more than they showed 2014 as “the hottest year ever”.

Fleeing Hillary: Top Money Man Departs

A top Democratic moneyman recruited by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign has put fundraising activities on hold, saying he can’t do it with a clear conscience because the former secretary of state has too many unanswered questions swirling around her.

New York businessman Jon Cooper, who Team Clinton enlisted for its elite corps of early fundraisers known as “HillStarters,” said that he decided not to tap his donor network for Mrs. Clinton because she hasn’t provided enough answers about foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation while she ran the State Department, her exclusive use of private email for official business as America’s top diplomat and her commitment to liberal priorities.

“I’m officially on the fence,” said Mr. Cooper, a bundler for President Obama’s campaigns who is active in Democratic politics in New York, which Mrs. Clinton represented in the U.S. Senate and where she has set up her campaign headquarters.
