JUST IN: Watch an Australian Surfer Fight Off Shark During Live Competition

Australian surfer Mick Fanning narrowly survived a shark attack during the J-Bay Open Final in South Africa.

As seen on the live television broadcast of the competition, a shark swam up behind Fanning, pulling him off his board and under water. Fanning and his competitor, Julian Wilson, were rescued unharmed from the attack by jet-skis, but not before Fanning said he was able to punch the shark in its back.

“I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth to come at me,” Fanning said immediately afterwards.

University of Maryland professor’s extra credit problem goes viral

WASHINGTON — A University of Maryland psychology teacher’s mind-bending extra credit offer is pretty much blowing up the Internet.

Dylan Selterman told his social psychology students that they could earn either two points or six points of extra credit on their final papers. Of course, there was a catch: If more than 10 percent of the class chose six points, nobody in the class would get the extra credit.

Selterman said this is something he’s been doing since 2008. Think of it as a real-time example of the tragedy of the commons — the dilemma of acting in one’s own self-interest versus acting for the greater good of the group. So far, only one class has managed to get the extra credit (FYI: It wasn’t this year’s).

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, Okla. - A judge sentenced the man convicted of killing his stepfather with a so-called "atomic wedgie" to 30 years in prison on Thursday, reports CBS affiliate KWTV.

According to court documents, Davis admitted to giving St. Clair an "atomic wedgie" by pulling St. Clair's underwear over his back and head allowing the elastic band to wrap around his neck.

Bennett Middle School Demolition Begins - Wicomico Taxpayer's Assets being Squandered

Today - the tear down began of the Bennett Middle School.  A perfectly good, sound building will be demolished, while simultaneously, the Wicomico County Board of Education leases another complex of buildings  located at the Northgate Business Park (located behind Lowe's).  How much?  The Wicomico County taxpayers will ultimately end up paying a significant portion of the annual cost for the lease - $253,500.  When all is said and done - the final price tag could exceed $500,000 per year.
We are not making this stuff up - go out and look for yourself.  Wicomico County taxpayers will be bound by a 20 year lease - thus being economically hamstrung while the wrecking crews dismantle a building that was already paid for - plus - the land also being paid for to.

It is obvious that the Wicomico County's Board of Education is an entity that is totally out of control. Such illogical budget decisions will eventually play havoc on our taxpaying base - ultimately costing our residents by hitting them in their hip pockets.  Right now - the BOE resources are being diverted to outfit and equip the new offices that were recently leased in the Northgate Business Park.

Liberal Journalism At Its Best

That local freebie rag is at it again. I knew they'd only play nice with Bob Culver once and then go on the attack again.

You have to give credit where credit is due though. When it comes to the Henry Parker Ball Fields and the land the City and County had agreed to exchange, Mayor Jim Ireton is absolutely correct.

However, (as usual) there's a major twist to the story that has been told. Unfortunately, no matter how you look at it, Culver looks like a fool. Or should I say, he's been made a fool.

It seems one evening Wayne Strausburg, (known for his evening outings at local pubs) decided to take it upon himself to leave a message of Tom Stevenson's answering  machine flat out stating the County wanted nothing to do with the deal. I'm paraphrasing.

When Culver was confronted by the rag paper, he had no clue this phone call had happened. Very slick there Greg!

Culver's intentions have always been to move forward with the agreement and this is not the first time Strausburg has done something like this to embarrass Culver. Nevertheless, Culver continues to keep Strausburg on staff and Culver needs to own up to his decisions.

So in the end, it is what it is. Me personally, I'd fire Strausburg today and move on to greener pastures. He's a hot head who is probably popping blood pressure pills by the dozen as he reads this article. I've never been a fan of Wayne and I have no clue why Culver continues to keep ANYONE from Pollitt's old executive office staff.

OC’s City Manager Accident Under Investigation

OCEAN CITY — The results of an investigation, including a drug and alcohol screening, will likely decide whether disciplinary action will be taken against the city manager after a property damage accident in a city vehicle last week.

City Manager David Recor was reportedly driving west on Route 50 in his city vehicle — a 2014 Chevy Tahoe — when he struck a road sign pole near Golf Course Road around 7:30 a.m. on July 10. Recor reportedly initially fled the scene after colliding with the sign.

The hit-and-run accident was witnessed by an off-duty Ocean City police officer, who relayed the tag number of the vehicle to the dispatch center. Significant damage to the front of the vehicle, including a broken headlight and a cracked windshield, was reported.

The morning of the accident Recor went to City Hall and informed city Risk Manager Eric Lagstrom of the damage to his city-owned Tahoe. At some point, Recor was contacted by authorities and reportedly did return to the scene. Later, around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, the investigating trooper came to City Hall to serve Recor with a citation.

Recor hits post with car, trouble follows

City Manager David Recor has come under intense scrutiny, warranted or not, for a collision he was involved in while driving his city-issued vehicle last week.

On the morning of Friday, July 10, Recor was headed west on Route 50 when he veered to the left of the road and struck a signpost in the median. Recor said he was heading to WaWa for an espresso.

Although it has been alleged that he fled the scene, Recor said that he made a U-turn at the next intersection and pulled his black Chevy Tahoe off the road to move the broken sign out of the highway. The Tahoe suffered a broken headlight housing.

The accident was witnessed by an Ocean City Police Department Officer, who notified the city’s dispatch center, which then contacted Recor. As the city officer was out of his jurisdiction, a report was made to the Maryland State Police. Recor said that he met with a state trooper at the scene to give a statement.

According to the desk sergeant at the MSP’s Berlin Barracks, the investigating trooper’s report is scheduled to be reviewed and released later today. Recor was ultimately issued a citation for negligent driving and a $140 fine.

Trump Says McCain Is Only a War Hero Because He Was Captured, ‘I Like People That Weren’t’

Donald Trump did not mince words Saturday afternoon when he blasted Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) — most notably for being heralded as a war hero.

Speaking at the Family Leadership Summit while in Iowa, Trump continued his ongoing feud with the Republican senator by saying the Vietnam veteran is not a real war hero.

“He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured,” Trump said. “I like people that weren’t captured.”

Judge S. James Sarbanes Named Administrative Judge for Wicomico County Circuit Court

Circuit Judge S. James Sarbanes has been named administrative judge of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County effective October 1, 2015. Judge Sarbanes succeeds Judge Kathleen Leonard Beckstead, who will return to full-time service as a trial judge and presiding judge of the Wicomico County Adult Drug Court Program after having served as administrative judge since September 2010.

“Judge Sarbanes has demonstrated the extraordinary leadership and management acumen that is requisite to the administration of a Circuit Court. His prior experience as a fine lawyer and effective manager will benefit the Circuit Court for Wicomico County and the people it serves,” said Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera. “In his tenure as a judge, Judge Sarbanes has quickly proved he is an asset to the Maryland Judiciary. I look forward to working with him in this new role.”

“I am grateful to Judge Beckstead for her leadership and commitment to the Circuit Court for Wicomico County and the Maryland Judiciary. Judge Beckstead has made invaluable contributions to the people and State of Maryland through her excellent work with the adult drug court, as a member of the Maryland Judicial Council’s Specialty Courts and Dockets Committee and a variety of commissions and committees,” said Chief Judge Barbera.

Harry Hughes' Grandson Convicted For Heroin Possession

Andrew White of Denton pled guilty in June to possession of heroin and received a flat sentence of 18 months to serve. White also pled guilty to obtaining property worth over $500 from a vulnerable adult, stemming from the theft of well over $100,000 from his grandfather, former Maryland Governor Harry Hughes of Denton over the course of several years, mostly through ATM withdrawals. White used the stolen funds to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of heroin per day for personal use from Byron Drummond and his associates. On the vulnerable adult charge, White received a sentence of 10 years to the Division of Corrections, with all but 18 months suspended, to be served consecutively to the 18 months imposed in the heroin case and five years of supervised probation. Restitution was handled by a civil agreement outside of the criminal case.

Governor Hughes requested that his grandson receive a fully suspended sentence or probation before judgment, but the States Attorney respectfully declined. “We generally try to accommodate the victim’s wishes in a theft case, but in this situation the large amount of money that was stolen literally funded the growth of the Drummond organization. Because Mr. White paid top dollar in cash for his heroin on a daily basis, Drummond was able to extend credit to new customers, selling more and more heroin and ultimately expanding the misery of heroin addiction throughout the county.”

NAACP demands Confederate symbols, including Stone Mountain carving, be removed

Yeah, let’s burn those books, baby! Let’s expunge that history. The Leftists want to eradicate ANY memory or history of any American who ever stood up to the federal government. This is insane. The NAACP wants to remove all Confederate symbols from the state of Georgia – revise their history and wipe it clean. They even want to sandblast the Stone Mountain carving. All of this run amok political correctness in the name of race – but that is only a facade. The real issue here is getting rid of independence, of history, of culture. It’s exactly what Barack Obama promised come to fruition. Welcome to the new America where Constitutional rights mean nothing and censorship is the meme of the day.

The Fight Over the Confederate Flag Has Turned Into a Hateful Smear Campaign Against Millions of Southerners

I don’t care about the Confederate flag or the Confederacy. Additionally, I was and continue to be largely indifferent as to whether the Confederate flag flies over government buildings. If I were forced to make a call on it, I’d generally lean toward taking it down just because I do understand how many black Americans could genuinely see the Confederate flag as a symbol of slavery and racism. It isn’t a Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the #blacklivesmatter idiots that are looking for something they can use to get on TV thing; it’s something real that anybody can empathize with, even if they don’t necessarily agree.

Of course, millions of atheists and liberals who hate Christians have adopted the Rainbow flag as a symbol. Because of that, I find the Rainbow flag to be offensive. That’s not an isolated opinion either. Undoubtedly, if you were to do a poll of the American public, there would be millions of Christians who have a negative reaction when they see a Rainbow flag because they see it as a symbol of hatred against them.

However, an intellectually honest and decent person would have to admit that there are also many people, perhaps even a majority of people who fly the Rainbow flag, who don’t view it that way. They look at the Rainbow flag as an expression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride or as a way to support gay rights.

That being said, any intellectually honest and decent person would also have to admit there are millions of people with a soft spot for the Confederate flag who are serious when they say “Heritage not Hate,” who see it as respect for their non-slave-owning ancestors who fought and died defending their homes or who just appreciate the spirit of rebellion behind it.

NAACP: Let's 'Sand Blast' Confederate Carvings Off Georgia Mountain

Another Confederate monument in the South is under fire, but removing it will require more than just an act of Georgia state legislature.

The Atlanta chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People called Monday for the removal of the 90- by 190-foot carving of three Confederate leaders, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, from the side of Stone Mountain, television stationWSB reported Tuesday.

“Those guys need to go. They can be sand-blasted off, or somebody could carefully remove a slab of that and auction it off to the highest bidder," NAACP Atlanta branch President Richard Rose told WSB.

Stone Mountain Park is a state park of Georgia about 30 minutes outside Atlanta and the sculpture in question is part of what's described as the "largest high relief sculpture in the world." The sculpture was dedicated by Vice President Spiro Agnew in 1970 and finished in 1972.

East Baltimore anti-violence group work suspended after guns, drugs found in raid

City officials have suspended operations of the Safe Streets anti-violence program in East Baltimore after police officers found seven guns and drugs stashed inside the Monument Street office.

Police said a robbery investigation led them to the office, and two employees were among those arrested. The suspension sidelines the program's work in East Baltimore at a time when gun violence has been spiking.

Safe Streets, a grant-funded program under the city's Health Department, uses ex-felons in an effort to stem crime. The program has been lauded for keeping violence at a minimum in the four neighborhoods where it operates, and some officials have urged its replication across the city.

Crash And Burn NASCAR Thugs – Supporting Illegal Invaders, Against Confederate Flag And American Sovereignty

Is it time to consider a different pastime for southerners? NASCAR is looking more and more like the NAACP or La Raza these days, censoring people and embracing a public policy which flies in the face of American values and traditions, including those of their Dixie-centered fan base.

Choosing to side with pandering politicians in attacking the heritage of southern Americans, NASCAR announced on Thursday morning that they would be censoring the free speech and values of the fans attending their events, asking them to “refrain from displaying the Confederate Flag at our facilities and NASCAR events.” They declared that every track which will be hosting one of their events had agreed to remove their fans’ flags, a testament to the level of coercion and intimidation they are willing to impose.

NASCAR CEO Brian France said on SiriusXM radio on Wednesday, “We’re all trying to be, as we should, the most inclusive sport that we can, and you can’t say that on one hand and then fly a very offensive flag to an entire race of people on the other. It just doesn’t comport. That’s where we are, and there’s no daylight between that. And I was clear on that over (last) weekend, and our tracks are working on the right kind of solution to work with our fans.”

Response to Mayor Ireton’s Press Release: County Withdraws Parker Complex Land Donation Request

The Mayor’s assertion that Wicomico County has withdrawn its request for the land donation associated with the Henry S. Parker complex expansion is not true.

The county has not withdrawn its request. In a letter dated September 4, 2014 from Salisbury City Council President Jake Day, he advised that the City Council unanimously supported the project, subject to certain conditions.

Those conditions were acceptable to the county and during the ensuing 10 months, the county has worked diligently to meet the conditions and has also arranged for funding for the project by obtaining a $1million dollar grant from the State of Maryland. The county has pledged $450,000 from its Tourism Fund and, preliminary engineering has been completed wherein the county has exceeded State requirements for storm water management, forest conservation, Paleo Channel protection and other environmental matters.

The USSSA World Series kicks-off in Wicomico County on July 15th with the Henry S. Parker complex serving as the tournament headquarters. An estimated $20million (direct /indirect spending) is expected to be generated over the course of the tournament from area restaurants, hotels, the purchase of gasoline, entertainment and other amenities.

We are still fully prepared to continue this collaborative effort with the city under the original conditions put forward by the Salisbury City Council. The Parker expansion is a significant opportunity to enhance our citizen’s quality of life and also stimulate further economic activity.

County Withdraws Parker Complex Land Donation Request

Salisbury - Mayor James Ireton, Jr. today announced that Wicomico County has withdrawn its request that the City donate 35 acres of forested land adjacent to the Henry S. Parker athletic complex on Naylor Mill Road. In light of this development, the public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, July 29 th has been cancelled. The County has indicated that they are now considering other prospective parcels of land.

"The importance of the Paleo Channel, and the water it provides both city and county residents is an incredibly compelling reason to keep this land in its present form,” said the Mayor. “We don't have to worry though, for now Wicomico County is searching for an alternative place to expand recreational areas. That's a good thing. I thank the many people who contacted me about the wellhead and safety buffers, and the staff at Public Works for all of the historical information regarding Paleo that they provided. Elected officials will always have to balance economics and the environment. I applaud County Executive Culver on this decision to seek land elsewhere."

‘Offended’ Flea Market Shopper Calls 911 Over Confederate Merchandise

A shopper perusing the merchandise at the Redwood Country Flea Market was so offended by a vendor selling Confederate and Nazi historical memorabilia, the person actually called 911.

Wallingford, Connecticut police were dispatched to the flea market to investigate.

The police chief William Wright tells News 8 “the reason no one was arrested was because the items were being sold on private property” — not to mention no laws were broken.

“There was a table set up with this material,” Wright says, according to Journal-Record. “It’s not criminally illegal, but obviously it offended this person. It causes some people a sense of being uncomfortable. Certainly the owner could preclude this merchandise.”

The town resident who called 911 said there were helmets with swastikas, images of Hitler and other historical Nazi items.

“I was shaking and almost vomiting,” he tells the paper. “I had to run. My grandmother had numbers,” referring to the digits the Nazis would tattoo on prisoners.
