CANCELLATIONS, POSTPONEMENTS AND OTHER SCHEDULING CHANGES FOR WICOMICO SCHOOLS DUE TO WINTER WEATHER

REPORT CARDS

Report cards from the 2nd marking period that would have gone home Monday, Feb. 1, will go home with students today, Feb. 4.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL/MAKEUP DAYS

Closings due to inclement weather and poor road conditions on Dec. 21 and 22, Jan. 8, and Feb. 1 and 2 will be made up on the five days from Monday, June 14 through Friday, June 18, in accordance with the approved school calendar for 2009-2010. June 16, 17 and 18 will be early dismissal days. The Board is expected to decide at its Feb. 9 monthly meeting on how to make up the latest school closing day, Feb. 3. There are no more makeup days in the approved calendar. In the approved 2009-10 school calendar, the Board also designated some professional days, including March 1 and May 3, that could become school days if needed due to emergency closings. Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen said he may ask the Board to consider making the March 1 professional day a school day with early dismissal for students, so that teachers would still have time that day for the professional development required prior to the administration of the Maryland School Assessment later in March. The calendar for this school year is still subject to change by weather closings and other factors.

RESCHEDULED, NORTHWESTERN ELEMENTARY

The Northwestern Elementary PTA meeting that was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 1, will now be held on Monday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m.

RESCHEDULED, NORTH SALISBURY ELEMENTARY

The North Salisbury Elementary Grade 3 Magnet "Fables and Fairy Tales" presentation that was set for Friday, Feb. 5, will now take place on Friday, Feb. 19.

POSTPONED, PARKSIDE CTE SKILLSUSA COMPETITION

The annual SkillsUSA Competition hosted by Parkside CTE (the Department of Career & Technology Education at Parkside High) has been rescheduled from Saturday, Feb. 6, to Tuesday, Feb. 9, due to inclement weather. Schools have been closed for three days this week, and due to the prediction of more winter weather this weekend, the decision was made to reschedule the event for Tuesday, during the school day. On Feb. 9, students in automotive technology, carpentry, collision repair, computer assisted drafting and design (CADD), computer network and repair, cosmetology, criminal justice, culinary arts, early childhood, electricity, electronics, firefighter/EMT, health occupations, high performance manufacturing, horticulture and turf management, HVAC, masonry, nursing assistant, plumbing and welding will showcase their skills during their local contests. Winners will go on to compete in the state SkillsUSA contest, and could even represent Wicomico at the national level. Last year, Wicomico sent several state winners to the national competition. All of the Wicomico students performed well in 2009 during the national competition. For information, please call Jim Maynard, SkillsUSA adviser, 410-677-5144.

RESCHEDULED, INDOOR TRACK REGIONAL MEETS

Indoor track regional meets have been rescheduled as follows: The 2A schools (Wicomico High and Parkside High) will now run with the 3A Central Region at the PG Sports Complex and their times will be used with the 2A Meet held this past Monday, which they missed. (Please note that if the Feb. 8 meet were to be postponed due to weather, then the 2A will be moved back to the original makeup date of Feb. 9 at the Baltimore Armory, and then scoring will be determined at that time.) 1A school Mardela High will compete at the 1A Central meet on Feb. 10 at the Baltimore Armory.

POSTPONED/RESCHEDULED, ALL SHORE BAND AUDITIONS

The Eastern Shore Band Directors Association has rescheduled the 2010 All Shore Band Auditions for Saturday, Feb. 20, at Easton Middle School. (These auditions were originally scheduled for Jan. 30 with a snow date of Feb. 6.) On the 20th, registration will be from 8:30-9:30 a.m. ONLY. Auditions begin at 9:30 a.m. There are other events at Easton Middle on that day, so it may be necessary to park across the street at St. Mark's Church.

POSTPONED/RESCHEDULED, ALL SHORE CHORUS AUDITIONS

Due to inclement weather, the All Shore Chorus Auditions that were scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, at Mace's Lane Middle School in Cambridge have been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13.

What about a waiver for some days? 3 years ago the systems applied for a waiver because the State was under a State of Emergency. Any more days will start to disrupt the summer school schedule, not to mention the teacher contract runs out June 30th. This will be interesting. I am sure Fredericksen will do the unpopular thing! And do whatever he wants!

What's popular is not always what's right, and vice versa. Reading the comments on some of the local blogs only prove this point.

The teacher contract has nothing to do with this. If you go online and read it at the BOE website, you will note that specific dates are NOT mentioned in their contract in regards to a closing date for school. I have heard many teachers talk about this and many have their facts WRONG (go figure!) This is because teachers work 190 days, and regardless of how long school must go into the summer, the school system will be open until the 180 day provision has been met for the students, and the teachers will work until the 190 portion of their contract is met. Of course, if a state of emergency is declared, Dr. F would need to apply for a waiver from the State Super, Nancy Grasmick. I remember a few years ago when Dr. Ding Dong (you know, the one who once referred to the sun as a planet at the opening day kickoff meeting for the county) 'forgot' to apply for the waiver. Never crossed her pea brain that kids would be in schools that don't have air conditioning during the summer....As for Dr. F, he has publically stated that one of his personal goals is to get AC in all schools, so this leads me to believe that he is aware of this - of course, he may just blow off the whole thing and let the kids cook...
