11 million Americans spend half their income on rent

More Americans are struggling to make rent.

The number of renters dedicating at least half of their income toward housing hit a record high of 11 million people in 2014, according to the annual State of the Nation's Housing Report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.

A total of 21.3 million are spending 30 percent or more of their paycheck to cover the rent -- also a record high.

Personal finance experts generally suggest budgeting around 30 percent of monthly income to cover housing costs.

But that's getting harder to do with rent prices rising faster than wages.

House Democrats Look to Ca$h In on Sit-in

The sit-in by House Democrats failed to yield the votes on gun control they had been demanding, but it did give them the chance to line their campaign coffers ahead of the November election, where they hope to cut into the Republican majority.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee blasted out emails asking supporters to pitch in their financial support behind the anti-gun sit-in led by Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon, which aimed to force House Republicans to hold for votes on gun-control measures in the wake of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

“John Lewis and Democrats are DEMANDING a vote on gun safety reform: BUT REPUBLICANS REFUSE TO LET US ACT!” a fundraising email read. “We need to get 10,000 gifts in the door during tonight’s sit-in. Will you stand with John Lewis and pitch in $1?”

Planned Parenthood shells out big bucks for canvassers to campaign for Democrats

Nothing irritates pro-life Republicans more than having Planned Parenthood officials insist they need federal funding to keep clinics open even as the organization’s campaign arm raises and spends millions to elect pro-choice Democrats.

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund recently launched ads on Craig’s List in Cleveland offering to pay up to $720 per week for door-to-door canvassers on behalf of Democratic candidates, with those hired earning between $15 to $18 per hour for up to 40 hours per week, LifeNews reported.

“One of the candidates certainly will be pro-abortion Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton,” who was endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action in January, LifeNews said.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America received $553.7 million in government grants and reimbursements in Fiscal Year 2015, about half its annual $1.1 billion budget, over the continued objections of pro-life advocates who argue that the funding violates federal prohibitions on funding abortion.

Supreme Court Places New Limits On Drunken Driving Test Laws

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has placed new limits on state laws that make it a crime for motorists suspected of drunken driving to refuse alcohol tests.

Justices ruled Thursday that police need a search warrant before requiring drivers to take blood alcohol tests. But the court declined to require a warrant for breath tests, which it considers less intrusive.

The ruling came in three cases where drivers challenged so-called implied consent laws in Minnesota and North Dakota as violating the Constitution’s ban on unreasonable search and seizure. State supreme courts in each state had upheld the laws.

The European Union: Government By Deception

I stumbled upon an article by Day of the Jackal author Frederick Forsyth, published last week in the Daily Express, that I think every Briton and European and everyone else should read. Forsyth doesn’t delve into the American pressure to form a European Union as a counterweight to the Soviet Union, he sticks with ‘founding father’ Jean Monnet and his reasoning behind the particular shape the Union took. And that is bad enough.

All Forsyth has to do is to quote from Monnet’s work, and I have to admit that while reading it I increasingly got the feeling that it’s quite remarkable that no-one, especially no journalist, does this. It’s there for everyone to see, but that means little if and when no-one actually sees it.

I have repeatedly talked about how the very structure of the EU self-selects for sociopaths and/or worse, but perhaps not enough about how that was deliberately built into the design. A feature not a flaw.

And I don’t think Monnet ever thought about how structures like that develop over time, in which the flaws in that design become ever more pronounced and the more severe cases of sociopathy increasingly take over the more powerful positions. A development that is well visible in present day Brussels.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz Can’t Explain Democratic Gun Control Strategy Beyond Sit-In

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) struggled to articulate Thursday what the Democratic strategy for gun control legislation is beyond staging a sit-in that one ABC reporter likened to a “slumber party.”

Schultz joined other congressional Democrats in a chaotic scene in the House of Representatives that began Wednesday morning and was still playing out Thursday. Democrats are staging a dramatic sit-in to push for a vote on gun control legislation that was already defeated in the U.S. Senate.

Appearing on CBS This Morning, Schultz could do little more than recycle talking points about how “we have to act.”

“Tell me what the strategy is right now,” CBS host Charlie Rose said.

“You know, the strategy is that we’re at a point in the year where we’ve had more than 100 mass shootings in this country and countless numbers of times that members of Congress, from the cities across this country in which those shootings have taken place, have stood on the House floor in the well and asked for a moment of silence, and the thoughts and prayers of our colleagues,” she said. “Well, thoughts and prayers aren’t good enough anymore. We have to act. We have an obligation to make sure that the legacy of those children who were killed—

Rose cut in.

“So help us understand what the strategy is,” he said. “How long will you be there? What’s the strategy? How will you measure what you can accomplish?”

Led Zeppelin Happy ‘Stairway’ Origin Question Settled

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Led Zeppelin did not steal a riff from an obscure 1960s instrumental for the introduction of its classic rock anthem “Stairway to Heaven,” a federal jury decided Thursday, legally settling a debate that has divided music fans for decades.

The trust of the late Randy Craig Wolfe claimed that Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page lifted a passage that Wolfe, better known as Randy California, wrote for “Taurus,” a short work he recorded with his band Spirit in 1968.

The “Taurus” recording contains a section that sounds like the instantly recognizable start of “Stairway,” but it was never played for jurors. In trying to show the works were substantially similar, the trust had the tricky task of relying on expert renditions from the sheet music filed with the U.S. Copyright Office.

Jurors, who deliberated about five hours, reached their verdict shortly after having videos of a guitarist performing both passages in question replayed in court. Those renditions seemed more like distant cousins than twin siblings.

Clinton Cash: Bill, Hillary Created Their Own Chinese Foundation In 2014

On Wednesday, in a wide-ranging speech criticizing Hillary Clinton’s record and fitness of office, Donald Trump renewed questions about the Clintons, their eponymous foundation and their financial relationships with China. In 2011, while Hillary Clinton was serving as Secretary of State, Bill Clinton received $750,000 for two speeches, paid for by a Chinese business group and an entity controlled by the Chinese government.

Those two paid speeches merely scratch the surface of the Clintons’ “China Syndrome.”

According to Clinton Foundation 990s reviewed by Breitbart News, the Clinton’s set up a separate entity, the “Clinton Foundation Hong Kong” in 2014. The filing doesn’t detail any specific activity by the new foundation, noting simply that its mission is to undertake programs of the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton (BHCC) Foundation. Although it is a separate and distinct foundation, it is controlled by the BHCC Foundation, according to the 990 filings.

Good Samaritan billed by paramedics after rescuing family from car crash

A man who rescued a family from its overturned vehicle after an accident was rewarded for his selfless service with a first-responder bill.

Derrick Deanda pulled a man and his three children from their van in Elk Grove, California, in September 2015 after it toppled over. Paramedics with Cosumnes Community Services District took Mr. Deanda’s pulse and gave him a bottle of water during the ordeal — and then billed him $143.

“I pulled up right as it happened. There was a guy standing inside the van, because it was on its side, holding a 2 year-old infant,” the hero told a local CBS affiliate on Monday. “I mean why would I want to stop to help somebody if I’m going to get a bill for $150?”

Deputy Chief Mike McLaughlin told the station that officials had no choice but to bill the good Samaritan.

State Department Disabled Security Software To Allow Hillary's Private Server Emails

Emails released under court order Wednesday to Judicial Watch show that in December 2010, State Department technical staff had to disable software on their systems intended to block phishing emails that could deliver dangerous viruses. The reason: The State Department was trying to resolve delivery problems with emails sent from Hillary Clinton's private server.

Deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin and Hillary both used Clinton's private server, and as AP reports, both had complained that emails each sent to State Department employees were not being reliably received. "This should trump all other activities" Ken LaVolpe, a senior technical official told other IT employees in a December 17, 2010 email. Days later another email was sent by State Department official Thomas W. Lawrence saying that Abedin was personally asking for an update about the repairs.

After technical staffers turned off security features at the State Department, Lawrence cautioned in an email "we view this as a band-aid and fear it's not 100 percent fully effective." State Department spokesman John Kirby clarified that the emails describe "a series of troubleshooting measures to the department's system, not Secretary Clinton's system, to attempt to remedy the problem."

On January 9, 2011, an IT worker was forced to shut down Clinton's server because he believed "someone was trying to hack us." The worker then went on to write "we were hacked again so I shut (the server) down for a few min" in what was one of several occasions where email access to Clinton's blackberry was disrupted because the private server was down according to the documents.

Clinton failed to hand over key email to State Department

WASHINGTON – Former Secretary Hillary Clinton failed to turn over a copy of a key message involving problems caused by her use of a private homebrew email server, the State Department confirmed Thursday. The disclosure makes it unclear what other work-related emails may have been deleted by the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

The email was included within messages exchanged Nov. 13, 2010, between Clinton and one of her closest aides, Deputy Chief of Staff Huma Abedin. At the time, emails sent from Clinton's BlackBerry device and routed through her private clintonemail.com server in the basement of her New York home were being blocked by the State Department's spam filter. A suggested remedy was for Clinton to obtain a state.gov email account.

"Let's get separate address or device but I don't want any risk of the personal being accessible," Clinton responded to Abedin.

Clinton never used a government account that was set up for her, instead continuing to rely on her private server until leaving office.

Maryland delegation reacts to congressional sit-in over gun control

WASHINGTON —Congressional Democrats conducted a sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives for hours Wednesday in protest of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan for not allowing an up or down vote on a few gun control measures in the wake of the Orlando shooting.

"We want results in the end to stop this carnage and the things that are going on," Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Maryland) said.

C-SPAN ended up broadcasting the Periscope and Facebook broadcasts of House members on the floor. It was the only way the public could watch it because the sit-in forced the House into recess. According to House rules, which was agreed upon by both parties months ago, dictate C-SPAN cameras be turned off during recess.

But that didn't stop the political blame game.

"You know, the Republican leadership has turned off C-SPAN," Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland) said. "So they've had to resort to underground broadcasting. I feel like are we in the District of Columbia or are we in Moscow, that we have to do these kinds of tactics."

Democrats want votes on two bills, one that would enhance background checks on gun buyers and ensuring those on the federal "no-fly" list can't buy a gun.

"Frankly I think the Republicans are concerned that they know 80 to 90 percent of people support those two bills and if they bring them to the floor, a lot of their members are going to vote against them," Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) said.

Some House Republicans say they are hoping for a compromise bill.

"There's always a chance but you don't do it by stunts, this is a political stunt, the time is not now for political stunts," Rep. Andy Harris (R-Maryland) said.

AP: Entire Clinton State Dept. Email Security Compromised

Department of State technical staffers temporarily disabled anti-virus software on their systems in an effort to resolve delivery problems with Clinton’s private server, according to the Associated Press.

The emails were released under court order to the conservative legal advocacy group Judicial Watch on Wednesday. The group has sued the State Department over access to public records related to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s time at the department between 2009 and 2013.

The emails, reviewed by The Daily Caller News Foundation, reveal the efforts by State Department officials to repair Clinton’s server after she complained about sent emails that were not being received by other department employees. Thomas Lawrence, described by the AP as a senior department official, wrote on Dec. 21, 2010 that Huma Abedin was asking about the server issues and what followed was a series of emails that shows a level of frustration within department staff.

Subject: Limbaugh: Immigration Is 'Voter Registration Drive' [AUDIO]

Radio host Rush Limbaugh argued that immigration is designed to be a “voter registration drive” so the Democrats can “remain in perpetual power.”

Limbaugh was reacting to the Supreme Court’s deadlocked decision, which means that one of President Barack Obama’s executive amnesty orders has been struck down.

“Immigration, as promoted by the Democrat Party, really is a voter registration drive, pure and simple. It is a desire by the Democrat Party to find another way to remain in perpetual power by creating as many dependent voters as they can.”

“And the best way to create and bring dependent voters in is to bring people that don’t have much education and therefore do not have many skills and therefore are not as capable of others as providing for themselves,” Limbaugh insisted. “That’s the gold standard in immigration if you’re a Democrat in 2016, 2002, as long as the current debate has been raging, that’s their objective.”

Why Britain Left

The June 23 vote represents a huge popular rebellion against a future in which British people feel increasingly crowded within—and even crowded out of—their own country.

I said goodnight to a gloomy party of Leave-minded Londoners a few minutes after midnight. The paper ballots were still being counted by hand. Only the British overseas territory of Gibraltar had reported final results. Yet the assumption of a Remain victory filled the room—and depressed my hosts. One important journalist had received a detailed briefing earlier that evening of the results of the government’s exit polling: 57 percent for Remain.

The polling industry will be one victim of the Brexit vote. A few days before the vote, I met with a pollster who had departed from the cheap and dirty methods of his peers to perform a much more costly survey for a major financial firm. His results showed a comfortable margin for Remain. Ten days later, anyone who heeded his expensive advice suffered the biggest percentage losses since the 2008 financial crisis.

The reporter pressed him further. “But why can celebrities… A number of people in your district are law abiding citizens…. Many of them want to have concealed carry… Why should the uber-wealthy have protection, but individuals who are law-abiding citizens should not?”

RIP Mike Flynn, founding editor of Breitbart’s Big Government

Mike Flynn, the original Editor-in-chief of Andrew Breitbart’s groundbreaking website Big Government, has passed away overnight. The cause of death was not revealed in a statement released by his widow, Holly Flynn:

It is with extreme sadness and heartbreak to announce that Mike Flynn, an Editor at Breitbart News, unexpectedly passed away Thursday evening.

While Mike had many accomplishments, what he was most proud of, was being an amazing father, husband, son, and friend to all who knew him.

The family wishes for privacy at this difficult time.

Flynn was one of the original merry band of warriors and generals recruited and empowered by the late Andrew Breitbart back in 2009. Along with John Nolte who ran Big Hollywood, Michael Walsh (succeeded by Dana Loesch) at Big Journalism, Alex Marlow, Breitbart’s Associate Editor (now Editor-in-chief) and the author of this column who ran Breitbart.TV, Flynn was an integral part of the early days of the Breitbart “Big Blog” revolution.

Flynn was the man who spear-headed Breitbart’s roll-out of the Acorn video series when Big Government first launched in 2009. As Breitbart’s sole employee in Washington DC in those early days, Flynn was the pivot person for every story and strategy focused on the federal government and national politics.

To his friends, Flynn was fiercely loyal, quick witted, intelligent and relentless in his defense of America’s founding ideals and the notion that individuals should have the right to live their lives without intrusion of the federal government in their lives. To his political adversaries he was tenacious and formidable yet quick with a joke and a cocktail at the end of a long, hard-fought battle.

Obama: Most Illegals Still Won’t Be Deported

President Obama said most illegal immigrants still won’t be deported, even after the Supreme Court’s tie ruling Thursday upheld an injunction on his broader deportation amnesty.

Mr. Obama rushed to assure illegal immigrants with ties to the U.S. that they are “low priorities,” even though they will not be able to get the work permits and taxpayer benefits his “deferred action” program had promised.

And he said the 4-4 tie was more evidence for the need to confirm Judge Merrick Garland, his pick to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia, to the high court.

Speaking less than two hours after the court’s ruling, Mr. Obama said it “takes us further from the country we aspire to be,” and delays a solution to a broken system that has allowed an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants to arrive and settle here.

The president also challenged voters to punish those who want stricter enforcement of immigration laws.

Amnesty Activists Vow to Get Even

Dealing a significant hit to President Barack Obama’s effort to grant work permits and de facto legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, the Supreme Court on Thursday effectively blocked the administration’s executive amnesty programs from moving forward.

As reported earlier by Breitbart News’s legal editor Ken Klukowski, “The judgment is affirmed by an equally divided Court,” the one-sentence opinion read.

The Supreme Court’s divided 4-4 vote leaves a lower court’s ruling, blocking the executive amnesty programs, in place.

The deadlock comes after months of passion-filled rhetoric on both sides of the issue. With immigration activists and Democrats arguing that the president has broad authority to grant legal status and work permits to millions of illegal immigrants. Republicans and the 26 states that challenged the programs stressed that Obama far exceeded his authority under the Constitution and unduly burdened the states .

In the end the case, brought by Texas and 25 states challenging the amnesty programs — Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) — resulted in a tie.

Amnesty activists responded to the defeat with a political tone, expressing disappointment but promising action at the polls.

SMOKING GUN: Hillary Did Not Turn Over Email Showing She Hid Information

Hillary Clinton did not turn over an important email about the problems caused by her use of a private email server for classified information.

Clinton sent an email to her deputy chief of staff stating that she did not want some of her emails to be “accessible,” presumably to Congress or to the State Department itself. That email helped form the basis of a scathing inspector general report that found Clinton violated rules.

Now, we know that Clinton did not hand over that email to State Department investigators, proving that Clinton violated her sworn statement that she handed over all of her emails. Her inability to hand over this email could also provide more evidence that she violated the Espionage Act by allowing national defense information to be “lost, stolen, abstracted, or destroyed” through gross negligence.

“While this exchange was not part of the approximately 55,000 pages provided to the State Department by former Secretary Clinton, the exchange was included within the set of documents Ms. Abedin provided the department in response to our March 2015 request,” said State Department spokesman John Kirby in a statement to the Associated Press.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee delivered a 41-minute address from his skyscraper in New York, attacking his Democratic rival for corrupt deals while at the State Department, and responding to her own sharp attack on his economic policies the day before.

Liasson writes that while the Clinton campaign was already disputing the particulars of Trump’s argument, he had made the case against Clinton in a way Republicans have been unable to do, and which the media have refused to allow. In so doing, she says, he may have helped unify the Republican Party behind his candidacy, while setting aside two weeks of missteps:

BERLIN – Though the election is still months away, two candidates have already filed to run for public office in Berlin.

Council member Lisa Hall filed to run for mayor last week while resident Zackery Tyndall filed to run for the District 2 council seat — the position currently held by Hall. Although he hasn’t officially filed yet, incumbent Mayor Gee Williams previously stated an intention to run for re-election in a February letter to the editor.

Zackery Tyndall
“This is just a different way for me to give back to the community,” Tyndall said. “I’ve been an employee of the town, a citizen of the town and now I hope to be in a leadership role to make decisions.”

Hall, who has served on the council since 2008, says she’s running for mayor because she wants to ensure that Berlin maintains its character.

“I want to preserve the small town charm of Berlin,” she said.

No-nonsense judge smashes state's case in Officer Goodson trial

With precision, confidence and the no-nonsense style for which he is well known, Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry G. Williams on Thursday destroyed the state's case against Officer Caesar Goodson, exposing it as a vessel of clay and smashing it to bits.

When Williams was finished reading his verdicts, there was nothing left.

In fact, the way the judge saw it, there was nothing there to begin with.

The judge's conclusion: The death of Freddie Gray from spinal cord injuries sustained in the back of a police van was not caused by the criminal conduct of the Baltimore officer who drove that van. It was not murder. It was not manslaughter. Not reckless endangerment. It did not even rise to misconduct.

There was no evidence, Williams said several times, that Goodson knew or should have known that Gray needed medical attention on the morning of April 12, 2015, as Goodson drove Gray from his arrest in Sandtown-Winchester to the Western District police station.

Democrats, LGBT Activists’ Plan to Crack Down on Christian Schools

If California Democrats have their way, Christian colleges and universities will no longer be allowed to require students attend chapel services or require them to profess a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Senate Bill 1146 would close a loophole that lawmakers say allows Christian universities to discriminate against students based on their gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation.

“All students deserve to feel safe in institutions of higher education, regardless of whether they are public or private,” said Senator Ricardo Lara, the author of the legislation. “California has established strong protections for the LGBTQ community and private universities should not be able to use faith as an excuse to discriminate and avoid complying with state laws.”

The legislation has already passed the California Senate and is expected to clear hurdles in the Assembly. Thus far, Lara has refused to compromise with the state’s Christian colleges and universities.

“No university should have a license to discriminate,” he said in a statement.

If the loophole is closed, it would only exempt schools that prepare students for pastoral ministry.

“It discriminates against religious colleges, said John Jackson, the president of William Jessup University. “If we don’t play ball with state — the state will attempt to drive us out of existence.”

New Truck

I stopped by the Ford Dealership yesterday, for a look at the new F-150 aluminum pickup. Just for fun, I took it out for a test drive. I wanted to sense that new truck "feel" before they become old.

The salesperson (a nice looking lady wearing a Hillary for President
lapel pin) sat in the passenger seat next to me, describing the truck and all its "wonderful" options. The seats were of particular interest. She explained that the seats directed cool air to your butt in the summer & directed warm air to your butt in the winter.

Feeling like messing with her-- I mentioned that this must be a 'Trump' truck.

Looking a bit angry, she asked why I thought it was a Trump truck.

I explained that if it were a Hillary truck, the seats would just blow smoke up your butt all year - round. I had to walk back to the dealership. She had no sense of humor.

Cops And Courts – June 24, 2016

Too Touchy With Horse

OCEAN CITY — A Catonsville man was arrested for interfering with a police animal last weekend after being told repeatedly not to touch an Ocean City police horse.

Around 10:50 p.m. last Saturday, two mounted officers were on patrol in the area of 17th Street when they were approached by an evidently intoxicated male, later identified as Joseph Goins, 22, of Catonsville. Goins allegedly asked one of the officers if he could touch his horse to which the officer responded “please don’t touch him,” according to police reports.

Meanwhile, another unidentified male approached the mounted officers and smiled at Goins, who then made a gesture toward the horse’s side in a petting manner. Again, the officer warned Goins not to touch the police horse. After Goins reached out to pet the horse, the officer placed him in handcuffs and arrested him on charges of interfering with a police animal.

Annapolis public defender arrested for DUI, assault on cop

An Anne Arundel public defender defending one of three people charged in a high profile double-murder was arrested on Wednesday — the day attorneys argued whether evidence in the case should be suppressed.

Michele Vignola, 43, of Annapolis, was charged Wednesday with second-degree assault, driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, reckless and negligent driving and failure to stay right of center, according to court records.

Police said they charged Vignola because she kneed an officer in the groin after she was handcuffed.

Britain shocks the world by voting to leave the European Union

LONDON — British voters have defied the will of their leaders, foreign allies and much of the political establishment by opting to rupture this country’s primary connection to Europe in a stunning result that will radiate economic and political uncertainty across the globe.

The voters’ decision to jettison Britain’s membership in the European Union was expected to jolt markets worldwide on Friday and unsettle Western capitals. By the time the BBC had called the result at dawn in London on Friday, the pound had already plummeted to its lowest level against the dollar in decades.

The vote is perhaps the most dramatic to date in a wave of populist and nationalist uprisings occurring on both sides of the Atlantic that are overturning traditional notions of what is politically possible.

The vote will have a profound effect on the E.U., which will lose a major military and diplomatic power. “This looks to be a sad day for Europe and for Britain,” said Germany’s foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Donald Trump: Hillary Clinton is 'a terrible liar, and she'd be a terrible president'

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday previewed a speech he’ll be making about likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton later in the day, saying she’s a “terrible liar” and calling the Clinton Foundation a “disgusting situation.”

“I mean, she has done a terrible job,” Mr. Trump said on Fox Business Network. “She’s a known liar — you look at what she’s said about email servers, and her landings under fire, if you remember the famous landing under fire.”

That’s a reference to Mrs. Clinton’s recounting how she landed in Bosnia during a trip as first lady “under sniper fire” — a claim she later recanted.

“Under fire [with] young girls handing her flowers,” he said. “I mean, she made it up.”

“She lies. She’s a terrible liar, and she’d be a terrible president,” Mr. Trump said. “It would be more of Barack Obama — probably worse — and she’d be a terrible president.”
