ICYMI: Cheapest Obamacare Plans, Not So Cheap -- Leads Aetna To Walk Away from Obamacare

I wanted to make sure everyone saw this Investor’s Business Daily piece from Friday outlining how even the cheapest plans under Obamacare are much more expensive than current available plans. The chart below says it all.

For example, in Maryland the cheapest plan under Obamcare would cost 83% more than the cheapest plan currently being sold in the state. To break things down further “A young worker making $20,000 in Maryland, for example, would pay about $1,000 for the cheapest ObamaCare plan, after the subsidy. That's still $278 more than the least expensive plan offered in the state today.”

In light of President Obama and his team trumpeting that Maryland would have some of the lowest rates in the country under the law, Aetna decided late last week that they would have to withdraw from the Maryland exchange because the approve premiums would not cover the cost of doing business. In a letter to the Maryland Insurance Administration, Aetna stated, "Unfortunately, we believe the modifications to the rates filed by Aetna and Coventry would not allow us to collect enough premiums to cover the cost of the plans, including the medical network and service expectations of our customers." Thanks to Obamacare 13,000 people who currently have insurance through Aetna are in jeopardy. Remember when President Obama said “No matter what you’ve heard, if you like your doctor or your healthcare plan, you can keep it”? Well, unless you live in Maryland and your insurance is Aetna.

Here’s a statement on Aetna’s withdrawal from the Maryland exchange from Congressman Harris, M.D.:

“Aetna’s decision to withdraw from Maryland’s exchange is another example that Obamacare is bad medicine for Maryland. It’s telling that an average 25% increase in premiums is not enough to make the Obamacare train wreck work. Despite promises by President Obama and others that this law would lead to lower premiums and greater access to care, the exact opposite is turning out to be true – Marylanders will be paying more and having fewer choices. It is time for the President to accept Obamacare’s failures and join House Republicans to implement health reforms that are patient-centered, lower costs, and improve access for all Americans.”

Craig: Obamacare Will Stick Marylanders with 83% Healthcare Tax

Harford County Executive and candidate for Governor David R. Craig announced today that Marylanders can expect a dramatic increase in health care insurance premiums under Obamacare, calling it a "massive new tax." Maryland's least expensive Obamacare plan will be 83% higher than the lowest-cost plan sold in the state this year. The analysis comes from a Government Accountability Office report that compares rates this year to what the Maryland Insurance Administration announced they will be under the new state exchange scheduled to launch October 1.

The state’s insurance agency locked down rates with private carriers last month and the new exchange for individuals is marketed as the “Maryland Health Connection.”

“What we have here is Maryland’s health disconnection,” said Craig. “This entire contraption will fall apart unless untold thousands of healthy people inexplicably decide to go online and buy expensive insurance instead of making a car payment. Private insurance carriers are not participating and not enough healthy, working people will either, and this is not going to work.”

The Maryland Insurance Administration and the GAO analyze similar policies available to similar age groups. A young person buying exchange insurance under the so-called “bronze plan” will pay $1368 in annual premiums, according to the state agency. Yet this year, according to the federal GAO, that person pays just $744 in annual premiums, an 83% difference.

“People are struggling with the worst economic recovery in our lifetimes, have faced down record tax, fee and toll increases, and now they are forced to pay 83% higher insurance costs," said Craig. “This is a massive health care tax politicians are attempting to brand as something else, and they are forcing people to buy it.”

The dramatic premium spike comes on the heels of the announcement that Aetna canceled plans to sell insurance on the exchange after state regulators drastically cut the rates it could charge consumers for its plans. Aetna, the nation's third largest health care insurance company as measured in terms of membership, acquired Bethesda-based Coventry Health Care this year.

"It is deeply troubling that Maryland has yet again soured relations with major employers and job creators. Another company acquires one of Maryland's last remaining Fortune 500 companies and takes their business elsewhere because regulators tell them what to charge. This irony is lost only on the one-party political machine in Annapolis."

Craig said this is only the beginning of the unraveling of Obamacare.

"These are only the initial, visible cracks in the foundation of the health care law, which like other federal public policy experiments, Maryland rushes into without conducting due diligence," said Craig. "I’m concerned about the cracks we don’t see yet.”

Paul Ryan: GOP Plan Says Illegals Go 'On Probation' Then 'Get a Green Card'

House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan said on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives would not take up the immigration bill that was approved by the Senate, but would instead take a "step-by-step approach" in which illegal aliens would go "on probation" before they were eventually allowed to "get a green card."

"So what we're going to do is take a step-by-step approach to get immigration right, not a big massive bill, but separate bills so people know what's in these bills," said Ryan.

"We don't have control of our border," said Ryan. "We don't know who is coming and going in this country. We need real border enforcement and that means we really don't trust the administration with discretion in this area. So we need a border enforcement law, first and foremost, that cannot be voided.

DEMINT: AL QAEDA BIGGER THREAT THAN PRE-9/11

On Fox News Sunday, Heritage Foundation President and former South Carolina Republican Senator Jim DeMint said Al Qaeda "may be more of a threat to us than they were before before 9/11" because they perceive President Barack Obama to be a weak president.

While agreeing with the Obama administration's decision to close embassies throughout the Muslim world on Sunday due credible threats, DeMint said America's enemies have been emboldened.

"Our attempt to placate parts of the world... is clearly not working," DeMint said. "The perception of weakness in the administration is encouraging this type of behavior."

WHY DID FDR FAIL TO RELIEVE MACARTHUR AND 151,000 TROOPS FIGHTING THE JAPANESE IN THE PHILIPPINES?

The following begins a series in five parts based on questions that arise from integrating revelations of intelligence history – specifically, the influence on US policy-making by Americans acting on the Kremlin’s behalf-- into the well-known sequence of World War II events. These questions are discussed and documented extensively in the new book American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character (St. Martin’s Press) by Diana West.
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. It is a day that still lives in infamy, just as FDR predicted.

According to Soviet intelligence reports, we now know that one of FDR’s top officials, the Treasury Department’s Harry Dexter White, was a Soviet agent, who, among many other deceptions, subverted relations between the US and Japan by inserting “ultimatum” language into the cable flow that actually spurred the Japanese attack. This was language written in Moscow, passed to White by a Soviet handler in Washington, D.C., and dropped into a State Department communiqué sent to Japan.

Liberty’s Backlash

Last week, Justin Amash, the two-term libertarian Republican congressman from Michigan, joined with John Conyers, the 25-term liberal Democratic congressman from the same state, to offer an amendment to legislation funding the National Security Agency (NSA). If enacted, the Amash-Conyers amendment would have forced the government’s domestic spies when seeking search warrants to capture Americans’ phone calls, texts and emails first to identify their targets and produce evidence of their terror-related activities before a judge may issue a warrant. The support they garnered had a surprising result that stunned the Washington establishment.

It almost passed.

The final vote, in which the Amash-Conyers amendment was defeated by 205 to 217, was delayed for a few hours by the House Republican leadership, which opposed the measure. The Republican leadership team, in conjunction with President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, needed more time for arm-twisting so as to avoid a humiliating loss.

BREAKING NEWS: Two Deaths Reported After Catamaran Capsizes Off Coast

Shawn J. Soper, News Editor
OCEAN CITY -- Two people died and two others were safely pulled from the water when a catamaran capsized about 32 miles off the coast of Ocean City early Monday morning.
Around 9 a.m. on Monday, the fishing vessel “Lori M.” contacted Coast Guard Station Hampton Roads when it came across a capsized catamaran about 32 miles off the coast of Ocean City. The crew on the “Lori M.” was able to successfully rescue two survivors from the capsized vessel, but unidentified victims were still missing, according to Coast Guard officials.
The Coast Guard responded with numerous assets including a helicopter and rescue swimmer from Air Station Atlantic City. The rescue swimmer entered the water, and with the help of another Good Samaritan, was able to recover the other two victims, who were deceased.
Another vessel, the “Just Right V,” one of 262 boats fishing in the White Marlin Open which began today, arrived on the scene and took the two survivors and the two victims on board.
The “Just Right V” is currently en route to the Indian River Inlet with the victims and the survivors on board. The “Just Right V” has an escort from the Coast Guard.
The investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided by The Dispatch when it becomes available.

Baywater Animal Rescue Updates Pet Food Pantry To Meet Demand

Cambridge, MD--Baywater Animal Rescue has recently had to make new guidelines to their pet food pantry in order to meet the community’s demand. “We had to change the way we distribute the pet food because the number of people seeking assistance continues to grow and we are unable to meet the demand,” said Christina Kimerle, Operations Manager for the rescue. “All of the pet food in our pantry is donated; either by Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Pet Pantries, or individual donors.” Baywater Animal Rescue now requires that pet owners bring documentation to show they participate in a government assistance program and a photo ID. This documentation must be renewed every six months and the amount of food given is calculated based on the number of pets at registration. “We don’t want to encourage anyone to take on another pet if they have trouble feeding the one(s) they already own,” adds Kimerle. So far, reaction to the changes have been positive. “People who need help are truly appreciative,” said Kimerle. The pet pantry is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1-4pm at 4930 Bucktown Rd., Cambridge, MD 21613. Donations are accepted during regular business hours. Information about the rescue’s other programs can be found at www.baywateranimalrescue.org.

Sea Level Rise Surprise

Driving the seemingly endless climate-treaty negotiations, the most widely feared consequence of Global Warming appears to be a catastrophic rise in sea level (SLR). Environmental advocacy groups are filling the airwaves with lurid images of flooding of Bangladesh and Pacific islands, and raising the specter of hundreds of millions of environmental refugees demanding care and compensation.
Even sober scientists, while not endorsing such obvious scare stories, predict an acceleration of the ongoing global rise, which a system of tidal gauges places at about 18 cm (7 inches) during the 20th century. Economists concerned with trying to estimate a 'social cost' of carbon-dioxide emissions predict huge economic losses from future SLR. Not surprisingly, insurance companies, looking to raise premiums, are cheering them on.
However, more detailed analyses of actual observations suggest an opposite outcome: A climate warming might even slow down SLR -- rather than accelerate it. To understand this counter-intuitive result, one must first get rid of false leads -- just as in a detective story. The misleading argument here is the oft-quoted statement that the climate warmed by 1degF (0.6 C) in the last 100 years and that SL rose by 18 cm. Both parts of the statement may well be true; but the second part does not necessarily follow from the first.
Curiously, Barack Obama predicted a deceleration of SLR when he accepted his party's nomination in 2008: "This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow, and our planet began to heal." Some tidal-gauge data do show deceleration, but starting in 1960. Hey, wasn't that the year during which Obama was conceived?

Virginia: Gun Sales Rise, Crime Falls

In a real life demonstration of scholar John Lott's maxim "more guns, less crime," violent crime has dropped in Virginia as gun ownership has increased.

According to a Fox News report, firearms sales in Virginia were 16 percent higher in 2012 over 2011 and violent crime went down by 5 percent.

Perhaps the significance of this is best seen in the raw numbers: In 2012 licensed gun dealers sold 490,119 guns in their state, while the number of violent crimes for the same time period was 4,378.

Virginia Commonwealth University assistant professor Thomas R. Baker commented on the numbers: "This appears to be additional evidence that more guns don't necessarily lead to more crime."

A defiantly unapologetic Tawana Brawley began paying off damages last week, 25 years after falsely accusing ex-prosecutor Steven Pagones of rape, The New York Post reported.

Ten checks totaling $3,764.61 were delivered to Mr. Pagones — the first payments Miss Brawley has made since she defamed him in 1998, The Post said. She still owes Mr. Pagones $431,000.

A Virginia court this year ordered the money garnisheed from six months of Miss Brawley’s wages as a licensed practical nurse at The Laurels of Bon Air in Richmond, The Post reported. She can appeal the wage garnishment every six months.

44 Facts About The Death Of The Middle Class That Obama Should Know

What is America going to look like when the middle class is dead? Once upon a time, the United States has the largest and most vibrant middle class in the history of the world. When I was growing up, it seemed like almost everyone was "middle class" and it was very rare to hear of someone that was out of work. Of course life wasn't perfect, but most families owned a home, most families had more than one vehicle, and most families could afford nice vacations and save for retirement at the same time. Sadly, things have dramatically changed in America since that time.

There just aren't as many "middle class jobs" as there used to be. In fact, just six years ago there were about six million more full-time jobs in our economy than there are right now. Those jobs are being replaced by part-time jobs and temp jobs. The number one employer in America today is Wal-Mart and the number two employer in America today is a temp agency (Kelly Services). But you can't support a family on those kinds of jobs. We live at a time when incomes are going down but the cost of living just keeps going up.

As a result, the middle class in America is being absolutely shredded and the ranks of the poor are steadily growing. The following are 44 facts about the death of the middle class that every American should know...

1. According to one recent survey, "four out of five U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives".

2. The growth rate of real disposable personal income is the lowest that it has been in decades.

The Daily Beast had previously reported that the Libyan government was using Ansar al Sharia and other "revolutionary militias" to "combat drug dealers" and to squelch a wave of crime and violence in Benghazi.

Later reports indicate the wave has continued.

Obamacare Full Frontal: Of 953,000 Jobs Created In 2013, 77%, Or 731,000 Are Part-Time

When the payroll report was released last month, the world finally noticed what we had been saying for nearly three years: that the US was slowly being converted to a part-time worker society. This slow conversion accelerated drastically in the last few months, and especially in June, when part time jobs exploded higher by 360K while full time jobs dropped by 240K. In July we are sad to report that America's conversation to a part-time worker society is not "tapering": according to the Household Survey, of the 266K jobs created (note this number differs from the establishment survey), only 35% of jobs, or 92K, were full time. The rest were... not.

Purple Line Likely Among O'Malley Announcements Monday

WASHINGTON - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will make a major transportation announcement in Bethesda on Monday, reporting a big step forward on the Purple Line and announcing funding for several road and rail projects for Montgomery County.

Sources tell WTOP O'Malley will announce that the Federal Transit Administration has issued a "Record of Decision" approving the Purple Line. The ROD is a public document stating that the project meets all the environmental requirements to receive federal funding. Baltimore's Red Line received an ROD in February, putting both projects on the fast track towards getting construction money.

"There are a lot of federal regulations that need to be met, but this announcement would be a huge step for the Purple Line and make it more likely construction will begin in 2015 and be completed by 2020," says Kelly Blynn of the Coalition for Smarter Growth, an advocacy group that prefers transit projects over road-widening to improve congestion.

Beef Supply At 21-Year Low: Get Ready To Pay Up

I don’t follow the commodity markets as closely as I used to, but the following article related to beef prices really caught my eye. Last year’s drought and consequent spike in grain prices led to negative margins for cattle producers, who subsequently culled their herds. As expected, this has resulted in tighter supply today. We see this evidenced in the fact that retail ground beef prices were up 13% year-over-year in June, and the CEO of Ruth’s Chris mentioned during a recent presentation that they were forced to raise prices in February. While grain prices are much lower today, which should encourage expansion in cattle supply, this process will actually cause even more tightness in the near-term as more animals are set aside for breeding rather than slaughtered.

Don’t worry, you can always just eat the S&P 500. From Bloomberg:

U.S. beef production is plunging to a 21-year low after surging feed costs spurred ranchers to cut herds, signaling record prices for consumers and higher costs for buyers from McDonald’s Corp. to Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

Production in the U.S. will decline 4.9 percent to 10.93 million metric tons in 2014, retreating for a fourth year, the government says. The herd on July 1 was the smallest for that date since at least 1973, according to the average of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

NEXT BEST OPTION

Chris Jacobs, Senior Policy Analyst at the Heritage Foundation, wrote a paper this week explaining why defunding Obamacare is the next best option to full repeal. Jacobs says,

The list of Obamacare’s failures grows by the day. It is not that portions of the law are unworkable -- the entire law is unworkable. Absent the law’s complete repeal, only full defunding would ensure that the American people are not subjected to any of these destructive policies. Congress can do its part in remedying these failures by using its all-important “power of the purse” to set a very clear line in the sand: not one single dime to fund Obamacare.

NO FUNDING PLEDGE

There are now 13 senators who have signed the letter circulated by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) pledging to oppose Obamacare funding.
  • Mike Lee (R-UT)
  • Ted Cruz (R-TX)
  • Rand Paul (R-KY)
  • Marco Rubio (R-FL)
  • Deb Fischer (R-NE)
  • Jim Risch (R-ID)
  • Jim Inhofe (R-OK)

They will come under enormous pressure to back down and they need to hear from people all across the country who support them.

We will keep you updated on this important fight for our nation's future.

Best regards,

80 Years Ago A Marine Major General Explained The Ugliest Truth About War

Marine Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler would be 132 years old today, were he still alive.
He was twice awarded the Medal of Honor, for his heroism during several combat tours in Central America. He took part in World War I, the Banana Wars, and the Boxer rebellion in China.

Consequently he became quite the anti-war activist in his older age. He even put a stop to a real-life potential military coup against F.D.R.

If Butler were around today, engagements like Iraq would have him simply astounded.

Not only is it the most violent since the middle of the American invasion, but it's also grown to become the second-leading nation for oil production in OPEC (first would be Saudi Arabia).

The irony would not be lost on Butler, who toured the U.S. in 1933 giving a speech he called "War is a racket."

Eventually he turned the speech into a book.

Here's an excerpt:

America: Where Hard Working, Productive Members Of Society Pay For The Health Care Of Everyone Else

Everybody in America wants health care - but most Americans seem to want someone else to pay for it. In the United States today, the way that our system works is that the hard working, productive members of society pay for the health care of everyone else. At least under socialism everyone gets the same benefits. Our system of health care is a very twisted version of socialism where millions upon millions of very hard working people are forced to pay for the health care of others, but often can't afford to purchase decent health insurance for themselves.

Personally, I don't have a big employer paying for my health care so I have to buy it myself, and I just got a letter from my health insurance company telling me that I have another massive rate increase coming up. Have you gotten a similar letter? Health insurance premiums are going up all over America, and this is just the beginning. In fact, the CEO of Aetna says that health insurance rates for many Americans will double [17] when the major provisions of Obamacare kick in next year.

It would be bad enough if hard working Americans just had to pay for their own health insurance. But no, they are also expected to pay for the health care of members of Congress, employees of the IRS and other federal agencies, state and local government employees, their adult kids (because they can't afford health insurance), the elderly, the poor, and now under Obamacare they will also be expected to subsidize the health plans of tens of millions of other Americans that are not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid.

When you add it all up, the hard working, productive members of society are at least partially subsidizing the health care of well over half of all Americans while having to pay for their own health care at the same time.

America’s Urban Distress: Which States And Regions Set Up Their Cities To Fail?

In 2011, the four U.S. cities with the highest unemployment rates were:
Stockton, California (20.2%)
Detroit, Michigan (20.0%)
Flint, Michigan (19.0%)
San Bernardino, California (17.8%).

Today, only one of those cities is still standing. Bankruptcy-free, I mean. Stockton went bust in June 2012, San Bernardino in August 2012 and Detroit last month.

With facts like these, I’ll go out on a limb and argue that our job creation and municipal solvency problems are nearly one and the same. And city leaders in Stockton, San Bernardino, Detroit and elsewhere failed to balance their books partly because they didn’t keep enough of their constituents employed.
