Calling all tekkies!!!!

I am appealing to any of you SN readers who are "tekkies" for advice on what to do about my horrendous dial-up performance.Up until about 6 weeks ago I was blogging regularly as Totmom, unfortunately my technical problems put a stop to that.
Around 8 weeks ago,my slow, albeit normal dialup speed of around 40 kbps dropped dramatically to 12!YES,TWELVE!Before anyone asks, I live in an area where my choices for internet access are limited dialup or Hughesnet.Nevertheless 12 kbps is barely enough to read text emails, let alone blog. Then after about a month of this, my speed,in one days time, went from 12 to 31 kbps and stayed that way-not much but enough to get by.Five days ago the dialup speed dropped again to 14 and has not budged since.I use so-called accelorator technology and my computer is up to date and in good shape.I have also checked telephone wires, connections, etc. to no avail.A call placed to Verizon elicits " We only guarantee dial tone service, not dialup speed." So what else is there that I can do?The internet service providers say to call my phone company-and the phone company tells me its not their problem and to contact my ISP.Talk about passing the buck!I know this sounds like an unusual request but I am at my wits end on this.I just cannot pay close to $100 a month for Hughesnet but DSL is out of reach for one who lives ten miles away from the telephone CO(exchange office). If any of you have encountered and/or solved a similar problem,or just have some telecommunications savvy,I would love to hear your advice!

Salisbury Brotherhood?

A Salisbury City Police Officer going to an address where a subject had fired off a gun earlier today. He asked for backup as the guy could have been home and armed.

Dispatch told him they had no one available. Finally after a few minutes an officer cleared what he was doing and went to help. Luckily the guy wasn't home.

Taxes go up, they purchase all the Fire Trucks anyone could ever dream of but there's not enough Firefighters to fight the fires or ride the new shiny Trucks and not enough Police Officers to cover the City safely?

Welcome to the 10th Most Dangerous City In America!

Accountability and Fiscal responsibility II

Ok Marc!

In original my post on Accountability and fiscal responsibility I brought up a conversation I had with my Councilman, Joe Holloway and how I felt about that conversation.......it was my opinion to which I have a right.

You commented that you felt my opinion was wrong about Joe Holloway as it relates his position on collective bargaining. Fair enough. You have a right to your opinion as well.

During one of your comments, you expressed that "Joe Holloway has been one of the sharpest budget hawks on the County Council, I think your criticism of him is unfounded."

To that I say.....Really? Joe Holloway.....a budget hawk? By that I presume you mean that he is always on the look out to find money that belongs to the taxpayer and is being needlessly spent. Is that true, Marc?

Marc I find it extremely honorable when an elected official makes it his/her business to watch out for the taxpayer. In fact, I believe it is incumbent upon each of them to do so. BUT I believe that when an elected official does it selectively and brings it to everyones attention during an open council meeting it would be better called grandstanding. You see, Marc, for Joe to point out that unpaid board/committee members received pens as tokens of appreciation that cost more than $500.00 in taxpayers money without approval is interesting to me. I may be wrong but I would think that items that cost around $500.00 might be considered discretionary spending. Regardless it was brought to the attention of the public and a dark cloud was put over it. Right, wrong, or indifferent....it doesn't matter. Joe, being the "hawk" that he is, saw it as wasteful spending, brought it out, and labeled it as such. HERE is where the "selectivity" comes in.

Hawkeye Joe must have had that eye closed when he was one of the Council members who attended the 2008 winter MACo conference held at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina in Cambridge, MD. The Council members, including Joe, stayed at this luxurious Hotel/Resort on the taxpayers dollar. I can see attending conferences as they are a means of information sharing, etc. But I can't see the need to stay at such a posh resort at such an extravagant cost when it is only 30 minutes from Salisbury. How much did it cost us to send them there, feed them, and reimburse them for their mileage? Well, let's break it down:

1) Conference registration - $2340.00
2) Mileage reimbursement - $40.00
3) Hotel stay and meals to keep the council from having to travel 30 minutes..............................

$2923.14

Look on Joe's face right now....PRICELESS!

I kid you not. Total cost to the taxpayer for Council getaway......$5303.54

Seems a bit extreme to me.

Marc, I guess Joe must have missed that - otherwise I'm sure he would have brought that out during an open council meeting for everyone to see .....being the budget hawk that he is.

Grand Opening

I hear there's a Grand Opening in Salisbury this weekend?

Is Barrie Back From Vacation Already?

"Hey Joe, you retard, I know you wont print this comment but I know you will read it. I really don't understand where you get your swelled head, you are basically a complete squid-mongoloid who has found a forum where you get to self-promote your personal agendas. Really, I kind of think that you were abused as a child. Didn't get enough attention from dad, eh? Anyone with an education of any sort pretty much can understand that you are a joke and no threat to anyone or anything whatsoever. True, Salisbury and the County have some weird politics but for sure, your grand nez improves nothing and in fact adds to any supply of laughing stock ammunition gathered by those on the Western shore or elsewhere.

Thanks bud! Have a great weekend and I hope during your "roving reporting" this weekend you get hit and killed by a truck! Hell, I'd come to your funeral just to piss on your grave and laugh in the face of your grieving relatives!"

Jordan Reisman, YOU'VE BEEN BLOGGED!

The kid from Salisbury University out to recall anyone and everyone possible has proven to be completely full of sh!t.

Not only did he miss his deadline for financial records, he failed to turn in one single recall petition by the 27th of May, 2008.

Many had hoped this kid was for real but several of us had that feeling he was simply out to see if everyone else would pick up the ball and let him shine for everyone else's hard work.

Jordan Reisman has failed the community as well as the Students at Salisbury University. We tried to tell him he was wasting his time but he insisted in moving forward. Oh well, we'll just have to wait for the upcoming election.

Upon entry, the deputies saw a subject they recognized as Pompilus climb out a rear window. Deputies pursued Pompilus on foot and he fled into a nearby unlocked apartment in an attempt to hide from the deputies. The deputies followed Pompilus into the apartment and located him hiding in a bedroom. Pompilus resisted the efforts of the deputies to place him in handcuffs, but they were able to secure him. A search of the area where Pompilus fled to revealed a cache of marijuana that Pompilus attempted to discard.

Pompilus was arrested and transported to the Central Booking Unit at the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office where he was charged with Burglary Fourth Degree, Resisting Arrests and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance. After an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner, Pompilus was held on $10,000.00 bond in the Wicomico County Detention Center.

Additionally, two arrest warrants were served on Pompilus that had been outstanding. One was a District Court arrest warrant for second degree assault. Pompilus was held on $30,000.00 bond on that warrant. The second warrant was a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear on a Handgun charge, which held Pompilus without bond in the detention center.

"Beat The Peak" Deemed A Huge Success!

Delaware Electric Cooperative's “Beat the Peak” efforts are deemed a huge success!

GREENWOOD--Delaware Electric Cooperative President & CEO Bill Andrew expresses his sincere appreciation to the Co-op membership for their response to “Beat the Peak” efforts Tuesday, May 27, Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10.

Our “ Beat the Peak” conservation efforts for “wise energy use between the hours of 3 pm & 7 pm” plus the activation of our 20,000 Load Management switches controlling central air units and hot water heaters and our system voltage reduction have all translated into a substantial savings for the Co-op membership. Even though we set a much higher peak than was budgeted we estimate that our efforts kept the peak from going even higher and that these estimates could result in producing a final billing of $250,000 less than would be expected without our membership's support in the "Beat the Peak" program

Co-op members were informed about our “Beat the Peak” efforts through the Co-op website www.delaware.coop, media press releases especially radio and television and through 17,300 e-mails to Co-op members who had volunteered their email addresses.

Demand and energy costs for electricity are significantly increasing. During high cost “Peak” energy periods we typically use higher priced fossil fuels to meet our needs. Energy produced from these sources significantly impacts the cost of our electricity and our air quality. One key to curbing these costs is to use energy wisely.

Together we can, we have and we will continue to “Beat the Peak”.

Bayrunners Free Plugs

Considering it cost thousands upon thousands of dollars to run large page ads in the Daily Times, Bayrunners gets more FREE plugs and articles than anyone else I have ever seen in that Newspaper?

You have to beg and plead for them to promote the Zoo and other FREE services in the area, many of which only get a plug the day of and or the day after talking about what happened.

Greg Bassett must be tight with the Owners of Bayrunners and now they're getting a FREE plug on Salisbury News. Oh well, I couldn't pass up my noticing this one more time. It's in the back of the Sports Section under Business News.

By the way, you do notice all the ads the Airlines PAYS for in the Daily Times! Perhaps they should be the first company I go after for advertising. After all, I get more hits than the Daily Times now anyway and they should get far better results from this Website anyway.

Listen To OC104 This Morning

I should be LIVE on OC104 any moment now. Tune in and listen.

Question of the Day, Fri 6/13

Today is Friday the 13th. This is the only Friday the 13th of 2008. Do you believe in bad things happening on this particular date? Has something ever happened bad to you or someone you know on Friday the 13th?

All Washed Up?

While Linnens of the Week relocated to Delaware, another company moves in to replace them.

Mitch Wyatt, formally of Wyatt Wholesale (his father owned the Coors distributors) is getting ready to open a new Linen Company here locally. I bet he's smart enough to do it out of the City limits too.

IMO, it won't be long before one of them is out of business here locally.

Gannett To Freeze Pension Plan Contributions

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Gannett Co. (GCI), the newspaper company that owns USA Today and about 80 other daily newspapers, Wednesday said it planned to freeze its pension plan contributions, beginning in August, a move designed to save $90 million.

A spokeswoman for Gannett said the company plans to reinvest $60 million of the savings into employee 401k plans and keep the remainder as a saving for the company.
The freeze is yet another example of the struggles newspaper companies are facing as more readers turn to other sources, like the Internet, for their news.
According to Gannett's annual report, the company recorded total pension costs of $54.3 million in 2007, down 47% from its 2006 total of $102.7 million. The plan has total assets of about $3.4 billion.

Gannett on Monday said it planned to write down its asset value by as much as $3 billion in an impairment charge, reflecting roughly 19% of the McLean, Va., company's assets.

Most of the write-down stems from tougher economic conditions facing Gannett's U.K. newspapers unit Newsquest, where a real-estate downturn is hurting newspaper advertising revenues.

Shares in Gannett, in common with many newspaper stocks in the U.S. and the U.K., have been battered by advertising revenue declines, more than halving over the past year.

Shares were down 1.9% to $25.99 on Wednesday.

DJ Gannett Papers Cutting 55 Positions In New Jersey -Report

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Earlier this month, Gannett also offered buyouts to 166 full-time employees over age 55 at several of its New Jersey papers, the site said.

Selling the soul of our nation

Admittedly, I sometimes view some of the things Wymzie posts as ....a little far fetched for me. Maybe a little over the edge. No offense - it's likely I'm just not as deep a thinker as her or maybe I'm a little close minded. But I think she's right on the money in her recent post on Anheuser Busch . While I do believe that a little foriegn trade serves well to help keep the larger American unions grounded with respect to how much financial pressure they can put on their employers before it costs them their jobs, there is a point (imho) that we have to say STOP. There is a point at which this type of policy weakens our national security, as we are now witnessing with high prices of crude oil.

NAFTA is a mistake. I was listening to talk radio the other day and it was reported that, although the FDA won't come out and say it, some of it's employees have leaked that the tomatoes contaminated with salmonella are coming from MEXICO. In Mexico, it appears, the farmers are permitted to use untreated human waste as fertilizer on crops grown for human consumption, while that practice is prohibited here. Meanwhile in attempts to conceal the fact that the tainted tomatoes are coming from Mexico so as not to draw a negative light to NAFTA, the govt. continues to restrict the transportation of tomatoes grown on American farms to market. This is causing the tomatoes to rot in trucks and creates the potential for the financial ruin of American tomatoe farms citing that they haven't yet discovered the source of the contamination.

It appears that the health of our families AND the security of the American farmer are being endangered by people in our own govt. in order to push some political agenda. That really sucks for us.

Ovechkin Wins Hart Trophy, Boudreau Top Coach

Washington Capitals center Alex Ovechkin capped up an amazing season earning the NHL's MVP award, the Hart Trophy. Scoring 65 goals and tallying 67 assists Ovechkin lead the Capitals to their first post-season birth since 2002 with winning an amazing 11 of 12 games to qualify. Washington's luck ran out as they fell to the Philadelphia Flyers in 7.

Ovechkin also picked up the Lester B. Pearson Award for the most outstanding player, the Maurice Richard Trophy for most goals, and the Art Ross Trophy for most points.

The top coaching award, the Jack Adams, went to The Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau who lead the Caps to a 43-31-8 record and the Southeast crown with 94 points. That was 2 points better than The Carolina Hurricanes who missed the playoffs by 2 points. The Eastern Conference playoff race was one of the most heated contests in a long time having no set playoff picture until the final games were played.

The Greatly Anticipated WCDC Outcome

You recall, I am sure, the humiliating arrest before inmates and officers in the so-called Officer's dining room of Officer G?

To refresh the memory some, she was told by persons who no longer admit to having done so to report to the Officer's Dining area without any explanation as to why, and subsequently cuffed, read her rights, stripped of her badge and dragged away in front of inmates, fellow officers and other WCDC employees by 3D, his Infernal Investigator, Sleazy, and several police officers.

3D felt this was just and right behavior toward one of his employees for reasons beyond explanation, although he treated a Mr. L far more gently when that young man also was accused of breaking the law. And you will undoubtedly remember as well the SCREAMING response, which we cannot but feel was rather clearly from either 3D or Sleazy in which it was stated that because Ms. G would NOT cooperate with authorities and do what they wanted her to do, she was obviously guilty and deserved no such respect as to arrest her in private.

Well, Ms. G has been found innocent. So much for the powers of omniscience where 3D and Sleazy are concerned. Rumor has it that Ms. G will be returning to her post. Rumor also has it that 3D, that gutless wonder, met with Ms. G in private to tender his apology instead of doing what was RIGHT and having everyone who witnessed the arrest and humiliation brought together to also witness his apology.

We would like to say, borrowing 3's accepted mode of communication on the web, FOR SHAME, DOUGLAS DEVENYNS! If 3D is so all fired up to see RIGHT done, then why this cowardly demonstration of WRONG? More to the point, why the DOUBLE STANDARD where white men and black women are concerned?

Ms. G should demand a public apology. Like General George Patton, 3D should be marched out to stand before his entire staff and every employee in that jail, his words carried over the intercom system, and apologize to that lady like a MAN. And yes, Sleazy should be right there beside him, tendering a similar apology.
