(Hebron, MD) – A search is underway for an Eastern Shore teenager who fired multiple shots at a Maryland state trooper last night when the trooper stopped to check on a vehicle parked along a Wicomico County road.
The accused is identified as Wyatt A. Young, 18, of the 26000-block of Meadow Land Lane, Hebron, Md. Troopers have obtained an arrest warrant that charges Young with attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a handgun in a vehicle, illegal possession of a handgun, and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony.
At about 1:15 a.m. today, a Maryland state trooper assigned to the Salisbury Barrack, who is not being identified for safety reasons, was traveling in the 7500-block of Longfield Drive near Hebron, Md., when he saw a black 2005 Honda CRV, with Maryland tag 37013M8, parked in the grass along the shoulder of the road. The trooper was in uniform and in a marked patrol car.
The trooper was facing the front of the Honda when he pulled up to check on it. The trooper shone his patrol car spotlight on the Honda and saw someone lying across the front seat. The person, later identified as Young, sat up and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the trooper. Young fired at the trooper through the driver’s side window, causing the Honda’s window to shatter. Young is believed to have fired at least two more times at the trooper, before speeding away from the scene.
Neither the trooper nor his patrol car was hit by the gunfire. The trooper immediately turned around and pursued the fleeing Honda. The accused turned right onto Quantico Creek Road and right again onto Levin Dashiell Road. The trooper lost sight of the Honda prior to Rockawalkin Road.
A search of the area throughout the day by troopers from the Salisbury Barrack and Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputies has not resulted in the location of Young or his vehicle. Investigators from the Wicomico County Bureau of Investigation are coordinating the continuing investigation, in cooperation with the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office. Members from the Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team have responded to the area and are assisting in the continuing search for Young. A statewide law enforcement alert has been issued concerning Young.
Anyone with information on either the location of Young or his vehicle as described above is asked to call 9-1-1 or the Maryland State Police at 410-749-3101 immediately. Young is still believed to be armed and dangerous.

From appliances to gift cards, what buys to look for on the big online shopping day
Black Friday may be the shopping event on the minds of most Americans this week, but those looking for the best deals on the Web are already focusing on Cyber Monday. That's when the deals get really good and the only line you're dealing with is the one connecting you to the Internet.
But will sleeping in on Black Friday mean paying more on Cyber Monday? According to our experts, not really. Here's a sneak peek at what online holiday shoppers can expect.
Deals that deliver The good news for online shoppers is that Cyber Monday 2010 should deliver; and we don't just mean a bunch of packages to your door. Luke Knowles, founder of Coupon Sherpa, tells WalletPop that he expects, "Cyber Monday deals to be as good, if not better than what we saw last year." Knowles added, "In past years I have noticed that retailers bring out their best online offers, like free shipping on all orders, on Cyber Monday and I don't see that changing this year."

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O'MALLEY ON RECOGNITION OF AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE DAY
Annapolis, MD (November 26, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley today issued the following statement in recognition of today’s State holiday, American Indian Heritage Day:
“In 2008, I had the distinct honor of declaring Maryland’s first Native American Heritage Day. It is a heritage and legacy that dates back 10,000 years.
“As we continue to honor this legacy, we have put a priority on ‘repatriation.’ Our Department of Housing and Community Development is working with the Maryland Historical Trust and the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs to provide proper and respectful burial for Native American remains and artifacts.
“Today, Maryland’s Native American community remains strong – and we deeply appreciate the service of 17 Marylanders of Native American heritage who have chosen to step forward to accept appointments to state boards and commissions.
“We hope to continue working with you and your neighbors to build a better future for our State, recognizing that we borrow our world from our children, and that, ‘the way we treat the earth is a reflection of how we treat one another.’
Aho and thank you again.”

Washington Examiner: Taxpayers Have BecomeThe Servants In Montgomery County
After a decade-long bender, economic reality has finally forced Montgomery County officials to confront the damage caused by their irresponsible spending. It's not a pretty sight.
A sobering report released by the county's Office of Legislative Oversight revealed that personnel costs increased 64 percent during the past 10 years. Compensation for Montgomery County employees now consumes 82 percent of all tax-supported spending in the county's $4.2 billion budget. And for every tax dollar the county spends on bloated salaries, it spends another 52 cents on benefits for those same employees. This is even more than the 51 cents the federal government spends on benefits for its employees -- and twice as much as is typically spent in the private sector.
For 10 years, county employees' compensation outpaced inflation and population growth by 20 percent. Most of the higher pay and benefits went to the public school system, which gobbles up more than half of all county revenue and employs two-thirds of its total work force.
Within five years, OLO warns, fully one-third of the entire budget will be spent to cover their health and pension benefits and the county's debt service -- instead of on the supposedly gold-plated services they provide.
The OLO report also warned that "one-time solutions are insufficient to resolve the problem," but real structural change is not even on the table.
This is madness. A council with any backbone -- or concern for the taxpayers who elected it to represent them -- would call the unions' bluff and immediately start privatizing large sections of the county's work force, not stopping until major concessions were made. After all, when taxpayers are forced to provide "public servants" with more lavish benefits than can be found in either the private sector or the federal government, there's no doubt about who are really the servants in Montgomery County.

Israeli Officials: Abbas Making Excuses To Avoid Negotiations
Israeli officials accused Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas of looking for excuses not to negotiate, after Abbas said Thursday he would return to the negotiations if Israel declared a complete settlement freeze for a defined period of time during which the border issue would be resolved.
Abbas reportedly made those comments during a meeting of the Fatah Revolutionary Council in Ramallah.
One Israeli official said that Abbas was "making sure he is high up on the tree. It is a pity he is entrenching himself in his pre-conditions, and we don't understand the logic. It is almost as if he is searching for excuses not to negotiate."
One of the issues reportedly holding up Washington's letter to Jerusalem regarding US commitments in exchange for an additional 90-day settlement freeze is whether borders will be the focus of the first three months of negotiations.
While the Palestinians want the border issue to be the focus of the start of the talks, arguing that once the borders were set it would be clear where Israel could and could not build, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's position is that border issues could not be divorced from other core issues such as security arrangements and Israel's demands that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people.
Netanyahu is also apparently unwilling to pledge to wrap up an agreement on borders during the time when there is a settlement freeze. And the US, for its part, is reportedly unwilling to commit in writing that this would be the last settlement freeze it would ask for, apparently wanting to keep open the option of another freeze if the border issue was not wrapped up during one 90-day freeze. Here is more

Could This Be the Biggest Black Friday Ever?
As many as 138 million shoppers are expected to hit stores on Black Friday weekend, four million more than last year and the most since the National Retail Federation survey began compiling the data in 2006, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
By logic, Black Friday should be fading in importance. The crowds can be avoided by shopping online, where promotions abound. Many stores have shifted "Door Buster" sales to earlier in the month. Some retailers even opened on Thanksgiving Day itself. Yet Black Friday is bigger than ever.
Black Friday is expected to be the number one retail sales day of the year for the sixth year in a row, according to ShopperTrak, which installs monitoring devices in stores to gage traffic.
Because Christmas falls on a Saturday, retailers -- and procrastinators -- will be cheated out of a "Super Saturday" last-minute shopping day, the day that often vies with Black Friday as the biggest day of the season.
Several large retailers, including Kohl's, Toys 'R Us, Macy's and Target are opening their doors earlier than they did last year to prepare for the holiday-shopping onslaught.

Giant Responds To Local Letter

Thank you for contacting us.
I want to assure you that Giant has always been and continues to be committed to supporting the communities we serve. Giant Food receives thousands of requests from groups to use the outside of our stores for fundraising, educational purposes and to collect signatures. In order to best serve our customers, we have empowered our store managers to operate within established guidelines to insure that we can accommodate requests while respecting our customers' shopping experience.
In addition to the Salvation Army, we have been approached by the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, local sports clubs, local schools and other non-profit organizations. We believe that all of these organizations are vital to the communities that we serve. And although many of our competitors do not allow solicitation of any kind, we have a long-standing tradition of supporting these groups.
Many of our customers tell us that shopping at our stores should not involve passing by group after group "asking for money", "selling items" or "requesting support for a cause".
Our customers, like you, are among the most generous people in our communities and we value your patronage. We also recognize that it is only through you that we are able to fight hunger as the #1 contributor to many of the area food banks. And only through you, can we donate over $81 million to local schools through our A+ program. Our sponsorship of "It's Academic" has resulted in over $2.5 million in local scholarships. And last year alone your support of Triple Winner resulted in a donation of $1.5 million to children's cancer research.
We allow one group per day, Monday through Saturday, to solicit in front of our stores. Groups must meet specific guidelines and are scheduled by our local store managers. To allow us to accommodate all of these worthwhile groups, we limit organizations to 2 days per month for four hours per day. Due to our long-standing commitment to the Salvation Army we have a special exemption for their Red Kettle campaign of one full week in November and one full week in December.
We really appreciate your business and your feedback. Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional concerns or questions.
Sincerely,
Deborah Riley

Lister, of Lewes, DE, was developed as a suspect in the bomb threat during a separate investigation into the robbery of the Best Western Hotel in Dover, DE on October 21, 2010. Lister was also arrested by detectives for his role in that incident as well.
Michael Lister was charged with one count each of Robbery 1st degree, Conspiracy 2nd degree, Theft, Attempted Robbery 1st degree, and two counts of Terroristic Threatening. He was arraigned at JP Court 2 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution for lack of $63,000.00 secured bail.
MAN ARRESTED FOR SPOTLIGHTING MSP HELICOPTER WITH LASER
(Sykesville, MD) – A Carroll County man was arrested late last night after he endangered an in-flight Maryland State Police helicopter crew by repeatedly spotlighting the aircraft with a laser.
The accused is identified as David H. Hopwood, 35, of the 7000-block of Bristol Place, Sykesville, Md. He is charged with reckless endangerment, attempted second degree assault on a law enforcement officer, and prohibited use of a laser pointer.
At about 10 p.m. yesterday, State Police Pilot Marcus Alborghini and flight paramedic Trooper First Class Gregg Lantz, were flying in Trooper 3, a State Police helicopter based in Frederick. The crew was returning from a medevac flight to Baltimore.
The helicopter was flying over the Sykesville area when it was struck by a green laser flash. Knowing the potential dangers for a flight crew, the pilot and flight paramedic took immediate precautions as they worked to locate the source of the laser. The crew contacted the Westminster Barrack and troopers responded to the area, as did an officer from the Sykesville Police Department.
While in the area, the helicopter was struck at least four more times by the laser. The crew of Trooper 3 located the residence the laser was being emitted from and used the helicopter spotlight to light the area. Trooper 3 landed near Obrecht Road and TFC Lantz was transported to the residence that had been identified.
Troopers contacted Hopwood at the residence. Further investigation led to his identification as the person responsible for shining the laser on the aircraft. The laser pointer was recovered from Hopwood. He was arrested without further incident.
Shining lasers at aircraft can have dangerous and even deadly consequences. A direct laser strike in the cockpit can cause temporary blindness and disorientation for the flight crew. When the strike occurred last night, TFC Lantz was wearing night vision goggles, which significantly increase any light source and, when struck by a laser, can blind the person wearing the goggles, as well as seriously damage the night vision equipment.
“The use of a laser to target in-flight aircraft is a very dangerous and irresponsible act,” said Captain Mark Gibbons, Commander of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command. “While our flight crews are in the air serving and protecting our citizens, we will not have them jeopardized in this way. We intend to do everything possible to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who endanger our flight crews, or any other aircraft flying in Maryland. I appreciate the assistance of troopers from the Westminster Barrack and officers from the Sykesville Police Department who assisted in last night’s arrest. We have similar partnerships across the state and are working with our allied law enforcement aviation units to address this serious issue.”
Aviation Command personnel have already contacted federal authorities concerning this incident. The potential for federal charges against the accused is being reviewed.
