Worcester County Sheriff's Office Press Release 9-21-14

Worcester County Sheriff's Office

On September 20 around 11:45 pm Deputies from the Worcester County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to assist the Snow Hill Police Department with a fight on Cypress Lane near Dighton Ave. Upon arrival there was a disorderly crowd in the street. A male that was believed to be involved in the fight was initially detained. This detention upset a juvenile female who attempted to interfere in the arrest. The juvenile was subsequently arrested by Snow Hill Police Department. The arrest of the juvenile sparked an unruly female, April Jackson 34 of Berlin, to become upset about the arrest of the juvenile. Jackson was given several orders to back away or face arrest. Jackson failed to comply with the orders and a Deputy began to passively move her back and Jackson pushed the Deputy. The Deputy responded by immediately arresting Jackson who responded by resisting the arrest. Several other Deputies responded to the scene and assisted with Jackson's arrest. The male initially detained was released without charges. Jackson was later seen by a District Court Commissioner for charges of Assault 2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct, Fail to Obey a Lawful Order, Obstruct and Hinder, and Resist Arrest. Jackson was released pending a trial on October 28, 2014 in the District Court of Snow Hill.

BREAKING NEWS: WICOMICO COUNTY TRYING TO PURCHASE TWO PARCELS OF LAND ON RT. 50

It never ceases to amaze me just how crooked our local politicians can be.

Take Rick Pollitt, for example.

At this time, Wicomico County wants to purchase TWO parcels of land on East Rt. 50 and West Rt. 50. WHY? Because they want to open TWO Beer, Wine and Liquor stores to compete with those individual small businesses struggling to survive in this economy. What better recession proof business to get into than the beer, wine and liquor business. Next they'll be opening their own Cigarette Discount Stores.

No different from the Civic Center competing with businesses like the Fountains and Adams Ribs and so forth.

YOUR tax dollars are setting up extremely profitable businesses that compete against individuals who fork up millions of dollars. How can you compete as a single investor when the County can put up 100,000 investors?

Down the road, EVERYTHING will be Government Owned and run. Let me ask you this, are YOU seeing ANY relief on your tax bill every year while the County competes and shuts down places like Chef Fred's, Mr. Paul's Legacy, Zia's and so forth?

No, instead you keep getting TAX INCREASES every single year because these non business background politicians keep screwing you.

November cannot come soon enough. WHY haven't you seen this in the Main Stream media? Well, why don't you call them and ask. I say it's because they work to support the government and NOT WE THE PEOPLE. Keep paying for that subscription, fools.

Yikes - Pretl and Wife Support Laura Mitchell and Josh Hastings for Wicomico County Council

Recently filed campaign finance reports list a contribution by “Michele J. Hughes,” whose address is listed as “11571 Riverton Wharf Road, Mardela Springs, MD,” to “Friends of Laura Mitchell” and “Josh Hastings For Wicomico.”

The state property tax records show that the property at that address was deeded most recently to Michael A. Pretl and Michele J. Hughes, as husband and wife (tenants by the entireties).

Folks, this is very scary -- Michael Pretl was Ron Pagano’s campaign manager! Like Pretl and Pagano, Mitchell and Hastings, are liberal tax and spend socialists. All of them are worshippers of Obama and Hillary.

Pretl himself also has funded Hastings’ campaign. In this and prior election cycles Pretl and spouse have donated campaign funds to Conway, Mathias, Anthony Brown, Ulman, O’Malley, Pollitt and Michael Sarbanes. And in 2010 Ms. Hughes even donated funding for Davis Ruark!

PS -- Ms. Hugher/Pretl: do you know about the sexploits of Mitchell’s spouse?

Bought Me A Drone Last Week

Looks like this is going to be a lot of fun.

I Quit. No Wait, I'm Back. Only Trust Me, Everyone Else Is A Liar!

A friend of mine sent me a message about Jonathan Taylor today. As many of you know, I usually stay away from ANY discussion referencing this flaming liberal but thought I'd address his message.

It seems, (once again) he is begging people to stop coming to Salisbury News, like that's ever going to happen. He has stated he is bigger than Salisbury News because he has more likes on Facebook as well as followers.

Well, if that's what he wants to go by, good for him. However, for the record Mr. Taylor, Salisbury News has already surpassed 23,000,000 HITS in 2014. Yes Jonathan, that's twenty three MILLION hits.

Now, let's compare that to your likes or followers on your Facebook account and perhaps now you will come to realize just how foolish you look.

It has always been my goal to stay away from Facebook and Twitter. Salisbury News does NOT BEG for people to come to our Site. We do NOT BEG for people to help us. It has always been my goal for advertisers to obtain LOCAL traffic in order to give them the biggest bang for their buck.

As for Mr. Taylor claiming EVERYTHING we put on Salisbury News is a LIE, this guy needs to see a specialist who deals in mental health. While we do NOT agree with every article we publish, we do feel it's important for our viewers to see what's out there and debate their thoughts through comments. Heck, I publish all of Governor O'Malley's press releases. Do I agree with the man, absolutely not. However, he is our Governor and I give our viewers every opportunity to debate each release through comments.

Now let's talk about THEFT. It is AGAINST THE LAW to steal articles and present them as if they were written by the Blog owner. Jonathan Taylor has been stealing articles from the Coastal Dispatch as well as WMDT. He takes them and publishes them in their entirety and never puts up their logo, never links back to the original article and has most recently been threatened to be sued because he's a THIEF. It's no wonder he is now BEGGING people to help him out.

To top it off, now WGMD is a part of that THEFT because they are REPRINTING and airing Taylor's news as if HE wrote it.

The second image, (above) I think you'll find most interesting, allow me to explain. About 5 years ago States Attorney Davis Ruark met with all of the local Bloggers with "Gentlemen's Terms" in which NONE of us would publish ANYTHING about spouses or children. As you can see, Jonathan Taylor will spew ANY comment with ANY lie and continues to personally attack my Wife. He then goes on to say he's changed, since his Grinch days. No Jonathan, the reason you no longer us the "Grinch" is because Warner Brothers threatened to sue you and forced you to shut down. Really Jonathan, did you read your own policy. Would you like my Wife to SUE YOU for defamation?

I have always stated there is plenty of room for the Blogs. While Taylor may not like what we publish, (as most liberals do not) we do not shove SBYNews.com down anyone's throat. We have NEVER called Taylor's advertisers nor have we ever contacted ANY of them in any way, shape or form. We feel he has every right to his opinion and while I certainly do not agree with him, I'll agree to disagree. Mind you, I have not been to his Website in more than 5 years, but I do have people who keep me informed.

Finally, it takes a special kind of SCUMBAG to attack an innocent woman. I am curious what a Judge would think of Taylor spreading such defaming lies on his most popular Website and the kind of financial damages it might bring. And, I'll add, when we make mistakes, I apologize, ask for forgiveness and place that mistake at the top of the page for the day. Taylor, well, he just pulls the article and never apologizes at all. As if someone didn't screen shot it first.

WICOMICO JOINS THE MARYLAND SCHOOL BREAKFAST CHALLENGE WITH KICKOFF AT WESTSIDE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL SEPT. 19

Starting the day with a healthy breakfast has the power to unlock a brighter future for our students, because breakfast fuels academic success. Students who eat a healthy breakfast at school do better in math, have higher attendance rates, and are more likely to graduate than students who do not eat breakfast.

Wicomico County Public Schools are joining the charge to make sure all kids have the chance to start their day with a healthy breakfast by becoming part of the Maryland School Breakfast Challenge, which kicks off statewide Sept. 19 and continues through the end of October. The goal: to boost participation during the 2014-2015 school year in the school breakfast program. In Wicomico, the goals include increasing breakfast participation for all students, but particularly for the 60% of Wicomico students who qualify for free and reduced meals and eat lunch but may not be eating breakfast at school, or at all.

Wicomico County Public Schools and the students and staff of Westside Intermediate welcomed parents and many community supporters Friday, Sept. 19 for the School Breakfast Challenge kickoff, at the end of which each guest was invited to join a student to “Grab & Go” for breakfast in the classroom. The hallways outside the cafeteria were decorated with students' illustrations of starting the day with a healthy breakfast.

Report Outlines Climate Change, Sea Level Rise Consequences

OCEAN CITY — An independent study released this week on climate change and sea level rise in Maryland, including Worcester County and Ocean City, paints a rather ominous picture of the potential for severe coastal flooding in low-lying areas in the near future.

Climate Central, an independent team of climate change and sea level rise scientists, released its report entitled “Maryland and the Surging Sea,” essentially a vulnerability assessment with projections for sea level rise and coastal flood risk. According to the report, the most likely “moderate” sea level rise scenario would put properties and residents within five feet of the high tide line at the greatest risk.

Under the moderate sea level rise scenario, much of the state would be at risk within the next 60 years. In coastal areas along the Lower Shore, that number drops to as low as the next 20 years.

New Device In The Works To Catch Texting Drivers

A Virginia company is developing a radar gunlike device that would help police catch drivers as they text.

The technology works by detecting the telltale radio frequencies that emit from a vehicle when someone inside is using a cellphone, said Malcolm McIntyre of ComSonics. Cable repairmen use similar means to find where a cable is damaged - from a rodent, for instance - by looking for frequencies leaking in a transmission, McIntyre said.

A text message, phone call and data transfer emit different frequencies that can be distinguished by the device ComSonics is working on, according to McIntyre. That would prove particularly useful for law enforcement in states such as Virginia, where texting behind the wheel is banned but talking on the phone is legal for adult drivers.

Salisbury South Wawa Being Proactive

Salisbury's south end Wawa convenience store and gas station has long been plagued by non-customers, many of them from the North Camden/Smith Street area, neighborhoods known to be the home of illicit drug users, addicts and dealers. It was often the case that paying Wawa customers would be approached by panhandlers or beggars and greeted with "do you have a dollar for some food" (offers of actual food were usually refused) or told a story about a bad car alternator or a need to collect bus fare for a trip to Norfolk or Wilmington. The stories were widely varied but the message was the same. Customers were tired of it and many took their business elsewhere. Wall-mounted signs advising against loitering were ignored. Police were called, often several times daily, to move the offenders on and encourage them to utilize social services in the area, even supplying them with a list of those services and their contact information. But as one panhandler left the premises, often for another high traffic south end business, another would take his or her place, necessitating yet another police call, responded to by officers already overtaxed by high call numbers, another call paid for by each and every one of the taxpayers of Salisbury. The strategies weren't working. Too much effort and private and public funds were being spent, too much business was being lost, and the area was threatened by further deterioration.

After long consideration, Wawa came up with a simple, yet effective method to discourage panhandlers from loitering on their property. Using maintenance cones and homemade signs, displayed at strategic points of their walkway, panhandlers who approach the area are warned of trespassing and encouraged to move on. Grammar suffers, but the message is clear: if you're not a customer, you don't belong here. Wawa managers and staff say that the simple signage has been very effective. Customers have openly expressed their gratitude to Wawa staff. Many customers have returned and even more are expected. Sales are up. Police calls are far fewer.

Salisbury News commends Wawa management for coming up with and implementing this simple strategy. It encourages others to follow suit in thinking out of the box to address this increasing local problem.

Another Horse Struck By A Car On Assateague Island National Seashore

Assateague Island National Seashore

Yup. It happened again. On Monday, September 15th, another wild horse was hit by a car on the causeway from the bridge to island. Just after 10pm, a driver witnessed a horse being struck by a small sports car. The sports car left the scene, so the witnessing driver immediately called 911 to report the incident. According to the witness, after being hit, the horse fell down and then got up and walked away. Based on the witness’ description of the horse, we think that N2BHS-CK (Johnny’s Star) was struck.

After the incident, the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene searched the area and could not find any injured horses. On Tuesday morning, we accounted for and assessed the health of all of the horses in the area. All horses were accounted for and none appeared to be injured. Johnny’s Star [middle] was spotted grazing on the marsh with N2BHSX (Jester) [left] and her dam, N2BHS-C (April Star) [right]. There appeared to be nothing physically wrong with Johnny’s Star. We will continue to monitor all of the horses in the area to watch for any signs of injury.

Drivers – you must be alert at all times when driving on the island and especially around wild horses! This is the third wild horse/vehicle collision this year; we’ve been lucky that no horses were killed. However, since 1982, 29 horses have been killed by vehicles. Help us ensure that this number never climbs to 30. Please do your part by obeying all posted speed limits and driving SLOWER than the posted speed limit when approaching horses in or on the side of the road.

Obama urges Scotland not to ruin America's 'special relationship' with Britain by voting for independence

Barack Obama tonight urged Scottish voters not to break apart ‘one of the closest allies we’ll ever have’ by voting for independence on Thursday.

The dramatic intervention, just three days before Scotland goes to the polls, will infuriate Alex Salmond - with the battle for independence set to be decided by the smallest of margins.

Up to half a million voters remain undecided - with concerns over the future of Scotland’s place in major international organisations like the EU, Nato and the UN still hotly debated.

A Letter To The Editor 9-17-14

Joe,

As you are well aware, I am a frequent contributor to your posts with regard to educational matters. I am quite dismayed by the recent rash of new liberties and abuses I have read about with regard to the Wicomico County Board of Education. The financial particulars are just staggering and coupled with the current testing particulars; we are collectively doing nothing but raising children to be automatons. I can no longer do anything about the first item; however, I can be of service on the second. You see, testing is somewhat of an unknown process to the public. They trust the school system to educate their children. When that trust is broken, as I believe it has been, then it is up to those of us with knowledge of the process to rectify the situation. Specifically I am speaking about the Maryland State Assessments (MSA’s) and the State buy in to the Common Core Standards. Bear with me, as I will attempt to be as succinct as possible, but this is lengthy. First, parents may exempt their children from taking the MSA exams. This is a secret in educational circles, as it would most definitely bankrupt the testing companies and ruin quite a few corrupt careers in public education, including many right here in Wicomico County. In short, a parent of a child in a testing grade provides a letter (attached) and sends it to the school Principal. The Principal will review and copy this, placing said copy in the child’s file and forward it to his/her supervisor who will review it as well. It will be passed up the chain of command to Assistant Superintendent Margo Handy, who will advise the Superintendent, the esteemed (sic) Dr. Freddy. If there are only a very few letters, the Principals will be instructed to respond with a form letter generated by the testing office and from my experience, the matter will be quietly placed away on a back shelf to collect dust. You see, this is the Wicomico Way – don’t draw attention to it, and it will most likely go away on its own. However, if large numbers of letters begin pouring into school offices, a general panic will ensue – here’s why: The State Superintendent EXPECTS that Dr. Freddy play nice and put all of the children in the box – the testing box that is. As the state transitions form MSA to Common Core (which the governor signed off on along with the state superintendent) there will be significant pressure to get his ducks in a row down here on the shore. Now, in laymen’s terms, “significant” amounts to just enough refusals to test to completely INVALIDATE the tests (25% would certainly do it, but 50% or more would just blow the curve). This would most definitely require the Superintendent and the senior leadership to answer to this, most likely at a private meeting in Baltimore. Believe me when I tell you that no county wants to be the first to receive this sort of black eye. Couple that with the upcoming Common Core tests that are expected to blindly be implemented, consider the following:

The process by which the common core was developed and adopted was not a democratic one:

There were exactly 27 people in two work groups involved – their affiliations are: ACT (6), the College Board (6) Achieve Inc. (8), Student Achievement Partners (2), and America’s Choice (2). Only three participants were outside of those five organizations. There was only one classroom teacher involved to review math standards.

There were also just over 10,000 comments submitted to the constructors of the Common Core, but only 24 of the responses were quoted, and we’re left to take these folks at their word that all of the rest of the comments were positive and supportive.

Now, here is the really scary truth – the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is funding this – that is because it is illegal for the government to do so:

Public Law 103-33, General Education Provisions Act, sec 432, reads as follows:

No provision of any applicable program shall be construed to authorize any department, agency, officer, or employee of the United States to exercise any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, (or) administration…of any educational institution…or over the selection of library resources, textbooks, or other printed or published instructional materials…

Essentially, big government and private industry are driving this to make money – period

The Common Core tests are developmentally INAPPROPRIATE – a joint statement was released by Early Childhood and Education Professionals – over 500 recognized experts in the field – their summary statement included these concerns:

Such standards will lead to long hours of instruction in literacy and math
They will lead to inappropriate standardized testing
Didactic instruction and testing will crowd out other important areas of learning
There is little evidence that such standards for young children lead to later success

Hmmmm….government sanctioned and run, forced down the throats of states with the lure of money (and severe pressure and punishment if they are not compliant) big business footing the bill to avoid legal problems and over 500 experts stating publicly and quite loudly that that there is both no educational benefit and the practice of testing actually is very harmful to children. Of course, the Wicomico County Board of Education is VERY supportive of this – they tout all of the great things the Common Core is supposed to do – level the playing field, close the achievement gap, etc. – all not true – the Common Core is very definitely slanted toward the middle/upper class white students – Special needs students, students with second language concerns and the impoverished will all NOT benefit from this...despite what the President says it will do (or his Ed Mouthpiece, Arne Duncan)

So Joe, what are families to do? It’s simple – I have provided a form letter from “United Opt Out” (unitedoptout.com) for parents to use as a template if they wish. They send in the letters and essentially shut down the MSA in Wicomico County. When the Common Core arrives, they continue to do the same, year after year. The local big wigs at 101 Long Avenue will have a hissy/conniption fit trying to figure out a way to lie their way out of this and keep their jobs.

Respectfully,

Paladin

Majority of Marylanders Want Government Action on Climate Change Preparedness According to New Survey

A survey released today by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources indicates 73 percent of Marylanders want their state and local governments to take actions to protect their communities against the impacts of climate change, and more than half (55 percent) believe protecting coastal areas from sea-level rise should be a high or very high priority for the Governor and the General Assembly.

The report is the first of four to be released this fall from a survey of over 2,000 Maryland citizens conducted this spring by George Mason University in conjunction with the Climate Communication Consortium of Maryland. The current report focuses on sea-level rise and its impacts on Maryland, perceived threats to local resources, and preferred policies to protect communities at the state, county and local levels.

“Marylanders clearly understand that extreme temperatures and more severe storms are likely results of climate change that will occur in their communities in the next decade or two,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “These survey results confirm that our citizens believe we are on the right track and support our investment in reducing Maryland’s vulnerability to climate change and our efforts to pass important legislation like this year’s Bay Acidification and Coast Smart Council bills.”

Lawmaker To Introduce Bill To End NFL’s Tax-Exempt Status Because Of Redskins Name

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) announced Tuesday that she will introduce legislation to eliminate the NFL’s tax-exempt status because of its refusal to address the name of the Washington Redskins.

Flanked by several tribal chiefs, Cantwell, who is the former chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, condemned the team’s name as a slur against Native Americans.

“The NFL needs to join the rest of Americans in the 21st century,” she said. “It is about right and wrong.”

The Salisbury Zoo Cancels Night of the Living Zoo Event

The Salisbury Zoo will not be hosting Night of the Living Zoo event this year, 2014.

Volunteers are SHOCKED they canceled the event, many of whom have donated their time for more than 10 years.

This had to be the biggest fundraising event the Zoo pulls off each year and even I have to admit, are they nuts?

I am not sure who exactly made the final decision but I do feel that many people will be upset to hear the news considering it drew such a large crowd every year.

Holy Cow, The Daily Times Is Raising Their Price AGAIN!

Cover this Daily Times. A YEAR, (or more) ago you said you were ADDING 75 to 80 additional pages PER DAY to your paper, it never happened. You were sinking then and with this announcement you'll sink even further. You want real time news, you'll come to Salisbury News. You want the TRUTH, you'll come to Salisbury News. Just the other day we told you, (once again) the Daily Times KNEW a press release sent out by Jim Mathias was a LIE, yet they published it and mislead their viewers AGAIN.

No, you can no longer be trusted and quite frankly I firmly believe more people will cancel their subscription and be done with you. The ONLY reason you are raising your prices is because you have lost that many customers and you are trying to make up for those financial losses just to stay afloat.

You said Salisbury News would never last and people couldn't depend on such longevity out of us. Well, it seems the MAJORITY of your Staff is no longer with you and after 10 years we're STRONGER then ever before.

Sit tight until January 1st when we announce the many millions of people who visit Salisbury News each year. Oh yeah, we've already blown away last years numbers by August.

Redskins Star Was Wearing a Jesus-Themed T-Shirt Before His Press Conference — Notice Anything Different When He Actually Showed Up?

When Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III appeared at a press conference Sunday to discuss his dislocated left ankle, journalists and sports bloggers noticed something a bit odd.

Griffin, an outspoken Christian, had been wearing a bright blue shirt that read “Know Jesus Know Peace” in the locker room beforehand, but when he appeared on camera to speak with reporters, the bold, faith-based message was unreadable; the shirt had been turned inside out.

Washington Post sports blogger Dan Steinberg noticed the difference on Twitter, offering a side-by-side comparison:
