Tony Tank Drinking Water Safe

Subject: Tony Tank Drinking Water Safe
To: The Campus Community
From: Richard Culver, Media Relations Director

Cleanup and recovery efforts are continuing for a pollution spill in Tony Tank Creek near campus. Drinking water and wells in the surrounding area are not threatened, according to the Wicomico County Health Department and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

Salisbury University last night discovered a mechanical failure in the fuel line leading to an emergency generator at Henson Science Hall, causing a loss of approximately 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel from the fuel tank. Some of the fuel leaked into SU's storm drainage system, which flows into Tony Tank Creek.

A unified command was quickly established with the Coast Guard and representatives from SU, MDE, the Salisbury Fire Department and Wicomico County Emergency Management.

More than 1,000 feet of containment boom was placed between the Camden Avenue Bridge and the Riverside Drive Bridge to contain the spill. According to reports, over 600 gallons of diesel fuel have been recovered from the creek so far by the Miller Environmental Group.

"This operation is a fine example of our partnership among federal, state and local agencies along with the private sector," said Cmdr. Austin Gould, the acting sector commander of Coast Guard Sector Baltimore. "Together, we're working to eliminate an environmental threat to the Chesapeake Bay."

“The University appreciates these agencies’ support and leadership that have minimized the impact of this spill on the University, the community and our shared watershed,” said Dr. Tom Jones, SU provost.

For more details on cleanup efforts, please visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu. To report wildlife affected by the spill, please contact the Coast Guard Command Center at 410-576-2525. For those with questions relating to drinking water and wells, the Wicomico County Health Department has asked that calls be directed to the MDE Oil Control Program at 410-537-3443. If you have additional questions, please call the SU Public Relations Office at 410-543-6030.

Joe Albero & SFD Go At It Again

"Joe,
In response to your responses:
- Your assumption is that if firefighters agree with our leadership, we are "kissing their a$$". False. Most of us just agree with most of their decisions and appreciate the direction and progress the department is taking. Also, we have no trouble telling them when we feel otherwise, and know that the right thing to do is either carry follow those decisions regardless or walk away from the organization, not take shots in this forum.

So are you telling me ALL of you agree with the $10,000,000.00 Fire Palace expense? The $860,000.00 Fire Boat? Gifting Salisbury & Wicomico County equipment for FREE to other Counties and I'm talking about a LOT of equipment too, not just chump change and old stuff? Clearly on Monday night the SFD and its representatives verbally attacked and threatened a City Taxpayer who disagreed with the Administration. So is this what we're to expect down the road any time anyone challenges you? Is it all the Blogs fault, like you claim. Remember, I wasn't even there that night and had absolutely nothing to do with it. The Mayor and Council act like the Citizens need to be watched and must have a City Police Officer there because of their fear, yet it's the Administrative people who have PROVEN to attack the Citizens and NOT the other way around.

- There IS a restriction on accessing this blog from the department computers, a practice that has as much to do with keeping personnel productive as it does with preventing them for participating in your chat sessions. There is no restriction on what we do on our own time and our own computers. Further, any members who post departmental attacks on this forum would have more to worry about from the majority of fellow firefighters who remain loyal to the organization than from its administration. It continues to amaze most of us how none of these charges or complaints will be made in the light of day, such as at volunteer corporation meetings, or where someone with knowledge of the situation is present, where they can be addressed.

Is there such a rule on visiting the Daily Times and their comments? Is there such a rule on the Watch Desk? Come on now, who are you trying to fool here? The TRUTH is, See & Gordy want to try their best from any of you seeing the TRUTH.

- I stand by the term "disgruntled members", though you and I will never agree on their relative number, as they typically show their colors only in this forum, with no way to verify their identity or affiliation.

You, Sir, do NOT understand what disgruntled means. IF someone was disgruntled they would be terminated. Fed up, yes. Disgruntled, absolutely not. See & Gordy would fit more the definition of disgruntled than any employee at the SFD, seriously.

- Reputations - Gordy, See and Hoppes should be rightfully proud of what they have accomplished on behalf of the citizens of Salisbury and the SFD. This blog's practice of targeting the personal lives of those with whom it disagrees is inappropriate, to say the least, and debating such opinions would only fuel its foulest nature.

Inappropriate? These people are "public officials" and if they can't take the heat, stay at home with your wives and don't go to work any more. When you apply for a job, they check your credit scores and do a background check. Do you think most of these people would be hired today based on their ratings and background? I think now. Means a lot to me when someone wants to LEAD.

- "Our leaders are not idiots or crooks" - you and some of your readers levy repeated accusations and hints of impropriety, often repeating the same charges every few months, but never seem to provide substantive evidence. Repeating the same off-the-cuff, out-of-context quotes of your enemies is your weakest tool. If somebody did wrong, bring the evidence to the police. If you still got nothing, I guess you can always just keep talking.

Are you trying to get me to say something I'm simply too smart to do, because I won't. Believe me, I have gone to the Police with the equipment issue and we are demanding an investigation. I'm one voice for many.

- The fireboat. You admitted to receiving an answer to your question about how many homes along the river have access problems, apparently just not as specific as you needed. Speaking only for myself, as a member of the SFD, the fireboat issue is a lot bigger deal for you in cyberspace than those of us staffing the land-based apparatus. Our leaders want to get a grant to buy something they think would benefit the city, and many of you disagree. Have at it. If and when they come to us for support, they will provide a rationale and explanation for the vessel. In the meantime, try to keep in mind most of us dislike watching you beat on our fellow firefighters, whether they are wearing a white shirt or a blue one.

The rich keep getting everything they want, that's all there is to it. The numbers don't call for a $860,000.00 Fire Boat. We have ALL seen what you guys have done to the old one and many question if you didn't let it sink TWICE in one week simply to preach that you need a new one. Others have questions if you blow engines to get new equipment as well. I disagree with the blown engine theory but sinking the boat, yeah, I think that was done on purpose, I'll be bold enough to admit that.

- The facts that I was referring to had to do with the pile of other mis-statements made on this blog, such as those regarding the new tower: most of us can't drive it; it won't fit down 40% of the streets; Salisbury doesn't need such an apparatus; it's too heavy; it's too big; it cost too much; we didn't need new tools to go with it; we're wasting fuel when we are doing driver training; we're running red lights; and so many more. If you truly want to debate someone about these opinions, come to Station 16 and ask away. Someone there will provide your answers, or find someone else who can.

Let's get something perfectly clear. Yes, there are some comments that are wrong about what you have stated above. However, I have not! You need to stop comparing comments to my Posts, that's unfair. I just want to make that point clear as you seem to be becoming quite the blogger. Red lights, oh yes you did and there are photos and witnesses to prove that. These things happen. I have a very large Motor Coach and I understand what it's like to stop that puppy on quick notice.

Joe, you are very clear that this blog represents your opinion, and those of posters, and I respect that, and know that reasonable persons disagree. Let's just try to remain reasonable in our discourse, and realize that the more outrageous comments and charges posted might draw more readers, but serves no purpose in truly resolving differences..

While I appreciate that thought, use your real name and I'll show you more respect than you'll ever know. Until them, you're nobody. You're a guy/gal sitting behind a computer spitting out thoughts with absolutely no credibility whatsoever. Sorry, it's true.

Incident: Extradition
Date of Incident: 11 March 2009
Location: Barnwell County, South Carolina
Suspect: Marty Eugene Days, 45, LKA Salisbury, MD

Narrative: On 11 March 2009
, two deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office extradited Marty Eugene Days from South Carolina who was being held there on warrants obtained by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and Salisbury Police. Days had fled from Salisbury to avoid prosecution, but was apprehended in South Carolina when he was believed to be on his way to Florida.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office warrant stemmed from an incident that occurred on 13 February 2009 when Days stabbed a woman during an altercation. That warrant charged Days with First Degree Assault. The Salisbury Police Warrant charged Days with the theft of a motor vehicle. Upon returning to Wicomico County, Days was brought to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. COUNTY CHOOSES SIMMS WHARF SITE FOR DREDGING DISPOSAL AREA

County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr. announced today that the dredging spoils area known as “Simms Wharf” will be adequate to receive the material from the next round of dredging on the Wicomico River. Officials from the County, the Delmarva Water Transport Committee (DWTC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have determined that the spoil needs for the 2009/2010 projects can be met at existing sites. Mr. Pollitt said that “There is no need at this time to consider the excess county property at Pirate’s Wharf as a dredge spoils site. We now have some much-needed time to intensify the search for new dredge disposal areas.”

Mr. Pollitt praised the DWTC and local environmental groups such as the Wicomico Environmental Trust for working closely with him on this issue. “We all want to preserve the unique gifts of our environment while maintaining the economic viability of our region,” said Pollitt. “This solution for our dredging needs serves both interests.”

Each year, Wicomico County receives funding from the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge areas of the main channel of the Wicomico River in order to maintain a federally-regulated depth pf 14 feet. According to the DWTC, river dredging permits the continuation of waterborne commerce which is essential to the area’s economic survival.

Wilmington Man Accused Of Theft In Tax Fraud Case

Suspect: Ronnie E. Williams, 49, of North Broom Street in Wilmington, Delaware

Resume: On March 5, 2009, a 62-year-old female victim responded to Troop 1 to report a fraud complaint. This victim advised officers that in February she went to R.E. Williams Tax Accountants Professional Accounting Firm and Tax Center on Philadelphia Pike to have her taxes done. There she met with the business owner Ronnie Williams. The victim turned over her documents to Mr. Williams and requested her taxes be filed. She paid him half of the cost up front with the remainder of the monies to be paid when the work was completed.

After several weeks, calls by the victim to Mr. Williams went unanswered. The phone numbers she tried were reportedly disconnected. It was at this point that she reported her case to authorities.

Troopers responded to the business in question. They contacted the landlord of the establishment who said that he himself checked the business on March 6th and found the inside cleaned out and empty. The landlord also reported this tax business has not paid him any rent.

In the days that followed the original report, three more alleged victims came forward. Their accounts of what happened were similar to that of the original victim.

On March 10th, Ronnie Williams was charged with four counts of Theft. One of the Theft charges was listed as a felony due to the victim’s age. He was released on a $3,500.00 bond.

Anyone else who believes they too have been victimized is asked to call the lead investigator at Troop 1 at 302-761-6677 ext. 325.

Does Comegys Give Dam About Anybody?

On Salisbury Primary Election Day, March 3rd, Gary Comegys' campaign signs filled the front yard of a home on East Chestnut Street , directly across the street from the election polling place at Wicomico Presbyterian Church. Comegys told onlookers that he had “rented the yard for the day for $20” for his exclusive use.

What he didn't tell them was that he shouldn't have.

The property is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt drug and alcohol recovery transitional group home. It's operated by a long and deeply respected local organization, an organization that as a matter of policy is neither connected to nor supportive of any political entities. Comegys didn't talk with the home's staff to get permission, the permission that he likely knew wouldn't be given. Instead, he made a quick agreement with a resident under treatment there. He did an end run around the rules and those who enforce them to get what he wanted.

The residents in this home and others like it are members of a very vulnerable population. Choosing to recover from catastrophic life changes and devastating events, they work to put their lives in order, to once again become fully productive members of society, to live clean, sober and rewarding lives. It's an uphill climb for all of them. There are very limited numbers of opportunities to succeed. Without outside help, there are often too many opportunities for failure. They are provided shelter in a well-managed, protected environment as a part of a program that gives them a better chance to succeed. They don't deserve to be manipulated or preyed upon.

Comegys took it upon himself to be both predator and manipulator. He knew who owned the home and what it's used for. He took advantage, a most unfair advantage, of not only this naive group home resident and the charitable organization providing his care, treatment and safe place to live, but also of the very city and people he wants to lead as mayor. He potentially put a major social program in jeopardy for nothing but to further his personal agenda. Comegys knew what he was doing and where he was doing it. He was reckless and didn't care that he was.

This is not the first time that he has betrayed the public in a very similar manner. Nor is it the first time that he was caught in the act doing it. This time, though, he's gone way over the top: preying on the vulnerable; cavalierly putting at risk the reputation of an outstanding organization with a decades long history of doing only good for the City and its people, and; again putting himself first over everything and everyone. He is neither apologetic nor contrite.

He is Gary Comegys.

He wants to be your next mayor.

Bend Over Maryland Taxpayers, The Tax Man Has arrived!

Want to buy a pack of cigarettes in Maryland, like a pack of Marlboro? That will be $7.00 a pack, please! Off brands are now $6.08 per pack! Oh, if you think that's bad, the cost of liquor also went up due to the new Health Tax. There is also a new tax of 52.4% increase on Cigars. So what will Joe Albero do, quit. It's that simple.

Kind of ironic how they chose alcohol and tobacco to help the sick. LOL

Pohanka Shows Their Commitment To Salisbury

March 11, 2009

In the tough times currently facing our country, The Pohanka Automotive Group of Salisbury would like to reinforce it's commitment to the greater Delmarva community by taking our part in sustaining our local charitable organizations. The number of people relying on charitable contributions is growing every day while the number of individuals who are financially stable enough to donate is dwindling.

At Pohanka, we understand that there is action needed to reverse this trend. In order to better provide for Delmarva's charitable organizations, Pohanka Automotive Group has introduced "Pohanka Pays it forward". For every new or pre-owned vehicle sold, a $100 donation will be made to whichever non-profit charitable organization or cause the specific customer chooses.

The Pohanka Automotive Group needs your help in spreading the word on this new partnership. As an organization our success hinges on the community we call home, and it is our opinion that the relationship should benefit all parties involved. No great task is accomplished in solitude, and we would like to express our sincere loyalty in leading Delmarva through this recession.

Thank you for your consideration and we look forward to tackling the challenges that face our organizations in unison.

Pohanka Pays it forward, because you’re Community is our Community.

Parkside High School Hosts "Rachel's Challenge" March 16;

Parkside High School Hosts "Rachel's Challenge" March 16; Powerful Messages from a Columbine Victim Community presentation on Rachel's Challenge, public welcome, 7-8 p.m.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion, coupled with the contents of her six diaries, have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America. This program, known as "Rachel's Challenge" will be presented at Parkside High School on Monday, March 16. 2.

Powerful video/audio footage of Rachel's life and the Columbine tragedy holds students spell-bound during a one-hour school presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others. There will be assemblies at 8:30 and 9:45 a.m.

The assemblies will be followed in the afternoon by an interactive training session involving 60 Parkside students. These volunteers will learn how to sustain the momentum created by the assembly. The assembly creates the "want to" or desire for positive change. The training session teaches the "how to" and ensures that the positive impact will continue. The training session will take place from 1:30-3 p.m.

In the evening, the Rachel's Challenge speaker conducts a powerful session with parents and community leaders. This session is similar to the assembly program and ends with a specific challenge to parents and community leaders, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making. It will begin at 7 p.m. in the Parkside auditorium.

For information, please call 410-677-5143.

Are You Over 45 And Still Want To Play Softball?

Joe,

I read your blog all the time and I would like to know if I could put a notice on it for it for our Men's Over 45 Modified Softball League. We are not associated with Wicomico County at all. We play all our games at the Redman Field in Fruitland. We have 5 teams and we are always looking for more players. If anyone is interested they can call me at 410-726-7570 and I will make sure they get on a team. The Daily Times did an article on us last summer and I only got 3 calls out of it.

Thank You,

Emaciated Pit Bulls Need Rescue

These 2 EMACIATED dogs were found abandoned in the woods near a deer carcass. Sid, the blue & white male could barely walk. He had a huge abscess on his cheek which burst and is now being treated. He lets the staff clean it and put ointment on it. He is happy for any tenderness and takes his treats very gently even from a child's hand. Nancy, tan & white, has some marks on her and her front left leg is swollen.
They are probably less than 2 years old and both are good with kids and don't seem interested in other dogs. Their ears have been cropped, but that's probably all the vetting they've had.
They are presently at Somerset County Animal Control and need a rescue ASAP. They have not been to a vet because the county doesn't have the money for that. If anyone would like to sponsor them, I would gladly take them and get their injuries treated.

Can anyone help these poor dogs? They look worse in person than the pictures show. They are both very sweet and just want some human kindness. I can't begin to imagine what they have been through.

Welcome To The Same Old Salisbury Zoo

Clearly not much has changed over the years at the Salisbury Zoo. Visitors are still jumping fences where they don't belong and trying to pet the animals. There was absolutely no sign of a Zookeeper anywhere, yet they want to dump millions into a facility that can't take care of itself with the Staff now in place.

Poem To Mom

My son came home from school one day,
With a smirk upon his face.
He decided he was smart enough,
To put me in my place.

"Guess what I learned in Civics Two,
that's taught by Mr. Wright?
It's all about the laws today,
The 'Children's Bill of Rights.'

It says I need not clean my room,
Don't have to cut my hair
No one can tell me what to think,
Or speak, or what to wear.

I have freedom from religion,
And regardless what you say,
I don't have to bow my head,
And I sure don't have to pray.

I can wear earrings if I want,
And pierce my tongue & nose.
I can read & watch just what I like,
Get tattoos from head to toe.

And if you ever spank me,
I'll charge you with a crime.
I'll back up all my charges,
With the marks on my behind.

Don't you ever touch me,
My body's only for my use,
Not for your hugs and kisses,
that's just more child abuse.

Don't preach about your morals,
Like your Mama did to you.
That's nothing more than mind control,
And it's illegal too!

Mom, I have these children's rights,
So you can't influence me,
Or I'll call Children's Services Division,
Better known as C.S.D."

Mom's Reply and Thoughts

Of course my first instinct was
To toss him out the door.
But the chance to teach him a lesson
Made me think a little more.

I mulled it over carefully,
I couldn't let this go.
A smile crept upon my face,
he's messing with a pro.

Next day I took him shopping
At the local Goodwill Store..
I told him, "Pick out all you want,
there's shirts & pants galore.

I've called and checked with C.S.D .
Who said they didn't care
If I bought you K-Mart shoes
Instead of those Nike Airs.

I've canceled that appointment
To take your driver's test.
The C.S.D. Is unconcerned
So I'll decide what's best. "

I said "No time to stop and eat,
Or pick up stuff to munch.
And tomorrow you can start to learn
To make your own sack lunch.

Just save the raging appetite,
And wait till dinner time.
We're having liver and onions,
A favorite dish of mine."

He asked "Can I please rent a movie,
To watch on my VCR?"
"Sorry, but I sold your TV,
For new tires on my car.
I also rented out your room,
You'll take the couch instead.
The C .S.D. Requires
Just a roof over your head.

Your clothing won't be trendy now,
I'll choose what we eat.
That allowance that you used to get,
Will buy me something neat.

I'm selling off your jet ski,
Dirt-bike & roller blades.
Check out the 'Parents Bill of Rights',
It's in effect today!

Hey hot shot, are you crying,
Why are you on your knees?
Are you asking God to help you out,
Instead of C.S.D..?"
