It's All About Who You Know

In a nutshell, this is the Mayor of Ocean City's Daughter, Kellie Michelle Meehan. While this young lady had two DUI's, the first case was PBJ'd. However, she violate probation and then never appeared to her Court Date.

She was then pulled over for a suspected DUI a second time and they discovered she had a warrant out for her arrest for not appearing for the first DUI case and violating probation.

Now they convicted her for a DUI and ALL other charges were nolle prossed or not prosecuted. She got a $500.00 fine and is now driving on a restricted license and cannot have alcohol in her system for 3 years while on a strict probation in California.

Not for nothing but this should have been Front Page News and it's buried in the middle of the paper. I like Mayor Rick Meehan and there's no question kids today can drive us absolutely nuts. However, this is just unbelievable. I'll leave the comments to share your thoughts.

McDonald's Is Closed

The McDonald's in East Salisbury is now closed for business. I did see the article in The Daily Times on Sunday but like many, I thought it was a business piece on the owner of several local McDonald's and didn't even think of reading the article.

That being said, I received a few phone calls the past couple of days asking me if I knew what was up. Since the dogs used up our Sunday Paper, I can't exactly tell you but I did call their Headquarters Pounder & Cheese Office and they told me they were expanding and renovating.

So there you have it. Many people are NOT reading The Daily Times and the times are a changing. So for those of you, (like me) who were unaware of them closing their doors, now you know.

On another note referencing this McDonald's, I was told quite some time ago that this building went up in like 3 days. Obviously this has to be an exaggeration but if someone knows the history behind this particular location, I'd like to hear it.

How Will Ahtes' Group Pay to Renovate Salisbury's Station 16?

As noted here earlier this month, a group led by Bill Ahtes wants the city of Salisbury to donate the soon to be retired Station 16 to them for purposes of turning the building into a theater. Lest we all forget, we have already gone through this once before with the Boulevard Theatre on Main Street.

In this morning's Daily Times was an article about the auctioning off of mementos from the Boulevard and how this was to benefit SWAC, the Salisbury-Wicomico Arts Council. Buried in what was meant to be a warm and snuggly story about the arts community in Wicomico County were some interesting bits of information that should cause the Salisbury City Council to pause before handing over a valuable piece of real estate to Mr. Ahtes and his group.

To be fair, let's get all of the players straight. SWAC was the beneficiary of the Boulevard Theatre. Mr. Ahtes' group claims to be a different organization. While I am sure that legally, this is a different entity, it seems like pretty much the same bunch of folks.

Mr. Ahtes and company want to change Station 16 into a theater. Sounds great! How much will it cost? According to today's article, SWAC was able to raise only $25,135 over a 5 year period for the renovation of the Boulevard. Does Mr. Ahtes provide any evidence that his little salon will be able to raise much more money, in a shorter period of time?

To quote James Gillespie, Executive Director of SWAC:

"There are a number of people in the community who characterize the Boulevard Theater as a failed project, but it raised our awareness of how much the community wants a performing arts theater," Gillespie said. "We offered to return any donations or keep them to put (in the fund)."

The "community" wants a theater so badly that they were willing to pony up only a little over $5,000 a year?

The money SWAC received for selling the Boulevard ($175,190) is sitting at the Community Foundation. Is SWAC (which of course isn't related to Mr. Ahtes' group) planning on shelling out a significant portion of their "Wicomico County Endowment for the Arts" for this project? If so, what about the school children?

Wouldn't the citizens of Salisbury be better served by putting Station 16 on the tax rolls? Would they be better served by a for-profit business that employs people an pays taxes?

For a town of Salisbury's size there is ample theater space available. SU, Wor-Wic, Wi-Hi. Those are just the ones I know of personally. I don't know what's available at Parkside and I deliberately left out Bennett because of the new school construction.

As for now, the proposal is tabled, but keep an eye out. As soon as Barrie Tilghman and her compadres think that they can slide it through, they will.

Willards 5th Of July

Last night, Mr. Bob Harris represented the East Wicomico County Chamber of Commerce at the Pittsville Town Meeting. The Chamber wants to work hand in hand with the Pittsville Fire Department and the Town of Pittsville for an ALL DAY 4th of JULY CELEBRATION, of course on the 5th of July this year. The County will hold their Fireworks on the 4th of July and Willards wants to have their own display on the 5th. I'm told they will hold it on the grounds of the new School in Willards. However, they want to partner up with Pittsville where they can have daytime festivities on the grounds of the Pittsville Fire Department.

All parties seemed to be very interested as the Pittsville Fire Department is looking to raise funds for their new Fire Station Addition. More to come on that story, you're going to LOVE it!

Mr. Harris will be at a Board of Directors meeting at the end of the month to iron out the details and the Chamber has already worked out a deal with the same company that will put off the County's Fireworks. I can tell you that even though this just became public, 3 individuals have already committed to $1,100.00 into the fund raising drive for the event. I don't have any details at the moment for a contact if you're interested in making a donation as well but I do know that many of the people on that Chamber read this Blog and they can provide whatever information necessary for others to do so in the comment section.

WCSO Discusses Crime At Pittsville Town Meeting

Deputy Jeremy Bouchelle, (Iraq War Veteran) briefs the Town Council about crime stats for the past month in Pittsville.

I learned the State Police are covering the Town from 1:00 AM to 9:00 AM each and every day now.

The Pittsville Sub Station was in fact brought up and Sheriff Mike Lewis was expected to attend this meeting to discuss it with the Council but Sheriff Lewis was called out for a very special meeting, (I cannot discuss it) and could not attend this month. I did speak to Sheriff Lewis and confirmed why he could not attend. All I can tell you is, he's doing something far more important at the moment.

The Sub Station is a hot topic for some as many claim Sheriff Lewis expressed in his Campaign he would occupy this Sub Station. However, the crime doesn't demand it in Pittsville. I explained to the Council that the City of Salisbury has as many Officers working there as the WCSO has for the entire County.

This doesn't leave a whole lot of room to provide a single Deputy to patrol Pittsville. If the Town wanted to pay for an Officer strictly for Pittsville, they could do so. However, it doesn't seem to warrant it right now, IMO.

Pittsville is growing with fine new families to the community, they have a fantastic School System there in which everyone wants to send their child there, similar to Delmar. They have City Water & Sewer and IMO Pittsville is the next Bowie of the Eastern Shore. I have personally invested heavily into that community and I even asked many of my Developer friends back in Ocean City to start considering that Town years ago. Now they look at me and say, why didn't I listen to you.

I can remember the day when people would knock on my door there and say, I hear you're buying properties in Pittsville. I have a home I'd like to sell you for $25,000.00! Those were the days, eh?

Pittsville is still a great investment and as they grow they'll need to have a stronger presence in the community but for now I think the Sheriff is making the right decision. I did mention encouraging Sheriff's Deputies an incentive to live there. The Council seemed to accept the idea and perhaps they'll consider it down the road.

I should add, with 14 traffic stops in Pittsville alone, there's obviously a Sheriff's Department presence there. This does NOT include the State Police Records.

Restaurant Review

The City Bistro is a gem hidden in the Downtown Plaza that is to die for! I have attended many celebrations there and have eaten there several times and quite frankly its fantastic!

I went there yesterday with a friend and they recommended something I had never had there before, their Steak Sandwich. Considering I had ordered a Steak Sub from GoodFella's, I thought it would be a good idea to give it a try to see the difference.

Let me tell you Ladies & Gentlemen, THIS WAS REAL STEAK! No Steak Um's at this Restaurant! The Waiter asked how I'd like it cooked and I replied, medium rare. I have to admit, I'm thinking, how can they cook it medium rare, but what the heck.

The atmosphere was extremely pleasant and the food admittedly is pricey. I believe the 1/2 pound burger was $8.50 but I've had that in the past and it's well worth it. Your meal comes with probably the best french fries, (besides Thrashers) on the entire Eastern Shore, seriously.

When I was ordering my Steak Sandwich I saw the price of $11.00 and thought, man, that's steep. However, there had to be something special, so what the heck. I took some shots of the Restaurant and Bar area when I was leaving to sort of bring you to their environment, in case you've never been there.

Nevertheless, the food arrived and to my surprise I laid my eyes on what looked like a Steak Sandwich I had never seen before, REAL STEAK! It was so tender you could eat it with a fork. They have a sauce on it to die for and the ketchup was ONLY for the Fries.

The Waiter was VERY professional, making sure our drinks never got low and continued to ask each time, how is your meal. I had to give him a thumbs up each time because I had food in my mouth each time. The fries, VERY crisp, hot/warm and good to the very last fry, seriously. I ate them all and as I enjoy a big meal, this platter filled me to the brim!

So for what it's worth, this is a great place to take a date, your spouse, your co workers and or your friends. I know the Owner works very hard promoting the Bar & Restaurant and tries to have small Bands in there every so often. For those of you who know more about the City Bistro, I welcome you to add to this Post with your experiences.

What I enjoyed most, (besides the food and great service) was the environment. I did NOT feel like I was in a Strip Shopping Center. I felt like I was in a true Restaurant where this was NOT a Chain and they simply serve a fixed menu. They do NOT purchase their food from Sam's Club, that's for sure. I am in Sam's all the time and I have never once seen the owner of this Restaurant in there shopping with the mega carts full of all sorts of food.

If I worked Downtown you would catch me eating there at least 3 times a week! When you eat elsewhere and pay $6.50 to $9.00 for a Steak Um style sub, I'd rather pay more and walk away wanting to come back than simply eat elsewhere for less just because it might be more convenient.

So give them a try, you won't regret it.

NOW You'll See Something In The Daily Times About Pitsville

Although The Daily Times hasn't covered this story, my guess is now you'll see it within the next couple of days.

Mr. James Curran from the United Stated Environmental Protection Agency attended a meeting on December 17, 2007 and presented to the Town Commissioners of the Town of Pittsville, Bill Gordy, (Wastewater Superintendent) with a Plaque for excellence in Operations and Maintenance of the town's Wastewater Treatment Facility and for being the "most improved facility" in Maryland.

Pittsville prides itself by checking and testing the water quality TWICE A DAY. The State only requires these Treatment Plants to do so ONCE A MONTH! That being said, this is an accomplishment to be proud of and should set the bar for all other municipalities throughout the State.

With all the concerns over the Salisbury WWTP and now Hebron's, one can only hope the State keeps better tabs and changes the quality control measures by mandating such practices in the future.

The Daily Times Blows My Mind!

One the Front Page of today's paper they have the above photo. Underneath, (Thank God) they say, "President Bush, second from right." OMG! What would ALL Americans do without the help of The Daily Times and the Associated Press? Who would have ever recognized the guy?

My guess is that The Daily Times is selling to mainly Hispanics now and they're trying to educate them on who their new Leader is.

Finally, they claim this new $3.5 million dollar press will deliver far beter quality printing. I'm going to hold them to that over time and let's see if their promise is accurate because this print edition sucks!

"2" Years Ago Today

Today marks the first day I will start producing photos from 2 years ago today. Here we were in the Chipman Center while the almost $100,000.00 repairs were being done on the elevator in the GOB. As I recall, I called some friends of mine at Ottis Elevator and they told me I could have a brand new one built from the ground up for around $100,000.00 and they don't make cheap elevators.

That day, Barrie Tilghman was doing a PAC14 Me, Me, Me, show with the Chief of Police, Comegys and any other sucker that would kiss up to the Queen that day. At least she wore a jacket.

The Old Mall was a HUGE topic at the time as you can see Mike Dunn tugging at his ears. We're getting there Folks, little by little.

Tilghman Administration Puts Taxpayer First, for Once

We are often accused of being unfair to the administration of Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman and her unwaveringly loyal council leadership. It is true that we often bring attention to the various actions of this group when they are not in the best interests of the good people forced to pay for the folly of Tilghman, et al.

Recently, the Tilghman administration managed to save the taxpayers some money. The question has been raised, repeatedly, as to why the city chose to avoid the state bond pool and use another method in borrowing for the city's capital projects. By borrowing directly from a bank, the city saved its taxpayers approximately $56,000 in underwriting costs (we don't know whether any money would have been saved on the interest rate itself, but must assume that the rates would have been comparable).

This information only came to light because of the dogged questioning of Salisbury Councilwoman Debbie Campbell. The administration's past refusal (or inability) to provide adequate answers to these questions lead us to a couple of conclusions:

1. The city, and its citizens, would be far better served if the administration would provide accurate and timely responses to questions. It should not have taken nearly a dozen questions (at one meeting) and independent research by Campbell to determine the cost benefit of one borrowing method vs. another.
2. The Tilghman administration would serve itself, and most importantly its constituents, better by cutting back on the arrogance and resigning itself to the fact that there are those of us who demand a little evidence when an elected official takes action or makes a claim. Mayor Tilghman loves to tell the media that she "has to deal in facts", yet she consistently refuses to share these "facts" with the public at large. Therefore, those of us that are naturally skeptical feel the need to dig a little deeper.
3. To mangle a line from the late Otis Redding, "Try a little openess". A key example is the city's decision to use the City Attorney's office as an excuse to hide information. By claiming that every piece of information that flows through Mr. Wilber's office we can only conclude that the city is trying to hide something (whether that is true or not).
   
4. Understand the concept that opinion does not constitute fact. Given that most of the issues debated in government fall in the realm of opinion, providing empirical (and hopefully objective) evidence to support one's opinion serves the administration, the citizens, and civil discourse in general.

Contrary to the opinion of the administration, discrediting the Barrie Tilghman administration is not a holy cause. However, given the administration's determination to restrict access to information (to citizens and even elected officials) they should not be shocked when certain citizens prefer to act as if they are from Missouri. Given the determination of Councilwoman Louise Smith to ram legislation through without adequate questioning and debate the administration should not be surprised when some citizens feel that they, and the process, are being cheated.

Many of these problems could be averted simply by opening up the process and being willing to answer a few questions.
