BEG-SHOTS AN INSULT TO EVERYMAN
By SAM MYERS
ANOTHER day, another bailout. As I watched at Biddy Early's downtown pub, the Big 3 automakers begged Congress for more of my tax dollars, and I was disgusted to see our leaders in Washington dig the country's economic hole deeper by helping an industry that loses about $1,700 for each car it sells. Isn't this communism by another name? PHOTOS: Auto Execs Plead To Congress OPINION: GM's Fantasy Recovery Plan If the auto industry was able to switch from cars to tanks on a dime during World War II, why couldn't they have switched from gas guzzlers to hybrids 10 years ago and stayed in competition with Toyota? Instead, they wasted money on inflated CEO packages and inefficient vehicles, and now they want my family's hard-earned money to pull them out of the ditch they dug for themselves. Don't get me wrong. I don't think we can save the financial institutions and then let the carmakers and all of their blue-collar workers rot, but this country screwed up by dishing out money in the first place. How about a little economic Darwinism? Leave all these companies to their own devices, and the strong will survive. All I know is, I have kids to raise, and I don't need my wallet drained for some fat cats in Detroit who didn't even seem remorseful as they sat in front of the Senate committee, hat in hand, groveling for money. The one who ticked me off the most was Alan Mulally, the CEO of Ford. He had this smirk on his face and didn't seem the least bit humbled by the fact that he had resorted to begging. It all left me thinking: When is the government going to send me a check I don't deserve? Sam Myers, 42, lives in lower Manhattan and is a stockbroker-turned-freelance photographer.

FDNY'S SLASH AND BURN
By ERIK SHILLING, PETER HOLLEY and TOM LIDDY
The FDNY will be slashing nighttime staff at a handful of firehouses around the city in a belt-tightening move that critics say threatens to increase response times and that has residents and union officials seeing red. The department expects to save $9 million by deactivating three engine companies and one ladder for the overnight shift when the plan goes into effect on Jan. 17. "It's no secret that the city, the country is facing hard economic times," Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said yesterday as he detailed a $60 million cost-cutting package. All of the affected houses - Engine 4 in lower Manhattan, Engine 161 in Staten Island, Engine 271 in Brooklyn, and Ladder 53 on City Island in The Bronx - will lose one of their two units from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., when covering units can respond faster. Between 80 and 100 firefighters will be reassigned across the city. The companies facing cutbacks - chosen based on the number of calls, response times, the amount and type of work that each unit does, their proximity to other houses, and geography - ranked among the 25 lowest in call volume out of the 350 units citywide. Union officials blasted the move. "More fatalities happen at night," Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy said. "Closing companies compromises public safety." Engine companies are responsible for putting water on fires and assisting EMS in medical emergencies, while ladder companies search for victims trapped in blazes. Chief Salvatore Cassano said the cuts were made "in the areas where we think it will have the least impact." Also facing the ax is the fire station on Governors Island, a unit manned by three Bravest who responded to only 10 calls in the last 22 months. tom.liddy@nypost.com

Don't Miss Our Special Post Tomorrow Morning

HISTORICAL MOMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER

V.P. Of WBOC Responds

Joe,

Good afternoon. First I’d like to salute you for all the time you’re donating as a bell-ringer for the Salvation Army. Next I’d like to thank you for posting my e-mail regarding satellite. I’m now back here on Delmarva and have noticed the large number of comments my e-mail to you generated. With your permission, I’d like to offer some additional details regarding some of the comments. Before doing so I would like to thank your readers for their restraint in not attacking my little girl who defended her daddy with a comment of her own. I truly appreciate the kindness shown to her.

As for what appears to be a few common threads on the comments, here goes: It seems some folks think we don't want to be on satellite and that we’re trying to pull a fast one here. Nothing could be further from the truth. From a pure business standpoint it would make no sense whatsoever for WBOC (and WMDT for that matter) to want to keep our signals off the birds. Every time someone signs up for satellite we lose a viewer unless they also use an antenna. So we very much want the satellite companies to carry our signals. I tell you honestly we've been trying to get the satellite companies to carry our signal for at least five years, which is four years longer than I’ve been employed by WBOC.

Additionally some people have asked for ‘proof’ that the satellite companies refuse to carry the local stations. I don’t know how to ‘prove’ all our efforts including telephone conversations I’ve had regarding the subject since I moved here. I can offer that we hosted U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and members of his staff here at WBOC on Thursday afternoon, September 4th and spoke at length about the satellite companies refusal to uplink our local stations. We asked Senator Cardin to get involved. Further I attended a meeting with FCC Commissioner Michael Copps in Baltimore on Monday, October 27th at WBAL-TV and discussed this subject directly with him. I can also share with your readers a copy of the most recent letter I wrote to the CEO of DirecTV back in August, just before we launched our high definition NewsPlex. I think the letter is pretty clear. I sent it to him via overnight delivery, along a press kit with a DVD of pictures of the newsplex hoping to at least begin a dialogue. I've asked our web folks to post a copy of that letter for your readers. Here’s a link to it:

http://wboc.images.worldnow.com/images/incoming/pdf/directvletter.pdf

By the way, I received no response from Mr. Carey of DirecTV. I sent a similar letter to Dish Network along with a press kit. In any case, the bottom line is that those of us here at WBOC and FOX 21 want you to have the choice of watching us however you choose, free over the air, on cable, on Verizon Fios or on satellite. At this point, the satellite companies just don’t carry us, and are not receptive to talking to us about the possibility of carriage. Until that changes, satellite customers will also need an antenna to see their local stations.

Joe, my personal thanks for the opportunity to clear up the confusion out there.

Merry Christmas

Breaking News

The Daily Times pulls the links to buy photos from the Willards Fire Article. I hear a lot of people on their Site are complaining that we produced them as well, so we're just as bad as them. Nice try Greg Bassett but we at Salisbury News felt we needed to PROVE just how low you'd stoop to make a buck.

Hey Michael, THIS IS INFLUENTIAL!!!!!!!!

Announcement to the Campus Community - Dresser Property

I am pleased to announce that the Salisbury University Foundation has approved
the acquisition of the Dresser property. With this 19-acre addition, SU expands
to 173 acres on both sides of Route 13. The $5.5 million purchase authorized by
the SU Foundation was negotiated by its affiliated Real Estate Foundation with a
line of credit established three years ago. I wish to express my appreciation to
all who made this acquisition possible, particularly Paul Parks, president of
the SU Real Estate Foundation, and Kim Nechay, assistant director of the SU
Foundation. As I note in the attached press release, this land offers exciting
possibilities for future campus development which, in the years ahead, will
benefit our students and the community. The largest acquisition of land by the
Foundation in the last quarter century, this truly is a historic moment for the
University.

And Now for the Other Side of the Story of Traders in Pocomoke

Long time Pocomoke City eatery 'Traders Chicken and Ribs', doors are now locked with the contents advertised to be sold at Public Auction.

Why?

According to reports in the Daily Times, owner Tony Trader has been in an intense legal battle over the last year with Oxford Chase Development Co., . Oxford Chase and H2J LLC. are the 'new' owners of the Ames Plaza Shopping Center, in what has been depicted in subsequent letters to the editor and the court of 'Public Opinion' as a David and Goliath saga.

Trader has claimed that he has had to close down his restaurant just before the holidays putting 25 employees out of work.

A long time active, generous member of the community Trader has served Pocomoke City, and some of it most needful residents for many many years. As a house parent at the Samaritan Shelter I recall a bag of chicken being delivered to the shelter every night after the restaurant closed, so that the hungry in town would benefit from their extras.

Trader also volunteered years on the board of the Pocomoke City Chamber of Commerce as an active participant of the Cypress Festival and as Treasurer on the Executive Board.

What happened?

Why so much trouble now after 28 years in this location?

According to the Times article, Traders attorney stated “The only change, is a new landlord intent on permanently terminating the lease with Trader’s.”

Wow! That's pretty strong!

For those of you familiar with the property you know that this shopping center had certainly seen its prime a very long time ago.

Even before the Meatland Grocery Store, and the Ames Department Store moved the shopping center was in major disrepair and in need of a face lift.

Next Taylor Bank moved to their new location and, with filthy sidewalks and a parking lot filled with potholes it pretty much became a ghost town after they left save Traders and Hardees directly on the highway and a few small stores that clung on to stay in business. When the county moved the liquor dispensary into the center it probably brought more business to some of the remaining business' and definitely made the center look busier.

According to Howard Crossan, President of Oxford Chase Development Corporation and partner in H2J, LLC., owners of the center; all Trader had to do was keep his end of written agreement's that he willingly signed.

Part of that agreement was maintaining utilities to his business.

Crossan stated on the day of the the grand opening for Dunkin Doughnuts, the doughnut shops toilets and sinks began overflowing. A plumber was called to the site to clear the drains and lines in the doughnut shop but found nothing blocking it. Following the pipe the plumber found himself behind Traders store and when he opened the man hole for the main sewer line couldn't obtain a visual because of the amount of grease in the way coming from the Trader's lines.

Oxford Chase had to call 'Roto-Rooter' and have the lines cleaned, incurring a bill in the amount of $3,200. When presented with the bill Trader refused to pay it.
Additionally, during the course of making repairs to the center, Oxford Chase decided to repave the parking lot.

Trader was to pay his portion of this bill as well. He refused and said he did not want his portion paved, and it was not. Which only drew attention to the old asphalts age and condition. He also refused to move equipment that he had stored around the signage on the outside of the property which was a BBQ Pit Trailer, and some picnic tables.

Why the breakdown? Why the lawsuits?

According to Crossan in December of 2007 he met with Trader in Attorney Sonny Bloxom's office and told him he needed to pay the bill, Trader refused and Oxford Chase filed suite in District Court. District Court ruled in the developers favor, and

Trader appealed in Circuit Court. The Circuit Court denied the case and in August

Trader filed a Writ Cetorium in the Maryland Court of Appeals (which is a request for a stay that will keep him from being evicted).

But, he moved.

He has planned an auction to auction off his equipment.

But is this the fault of the Development Company?

I don't think so.

Mr. Trader signed a lease with this company. The lease stipulated the conditions the required maintenance and rules of what would be allowed on the property.

The remaining amount of the lease amounts to approximately $64,000.

Mr. Trader was presented a bill for $3,200 to fix a pipe that was clogged with chicken grease, coming directly from his restaurant.

According to Mr. Crossan if he had paid that bill, or at least have been willing to address this bill Traders would still be here today.

Twenty odd employees may still be working, and the family restaurants doors may still be open.

Things change. This is America, we are allowed to by real property and we are allowed to make changes to that property. This is America and we are also allowed to open a business and lease property from a property owner to conduct our business.

But one of the things that we need to keep in mind, if we do decide to lease, and that is in the end the real property is not ours, and we must abide by the conditions stipulated within the lease agreements; and if we do not, then we must pay the price one way or the other.

It is sad that Traders is gone, as it was a part of the invested fabric that is Pocomoke, but it is also sad that Oxford Chase has been made out to be the bad guy when they have invested a great deal into the community as well, and want to continue doing so into the future.

Developers often get the bad rap, but I really think that both sides of the coin need to be viewed.

Now what will happen to the $60 thousand plus dollars that Oxford Chase is claiming?

Trader has scheduled an auction for the 17th of this month to sell the equipment, where will these proceeds go.

According to Crossan, Trader is incorporated and could decide to file bankruptcy and never pay it at all.

Business isn't for cowards and things are usually more complicated than presented in a short newspaper article or letters to the editor.

It's sad to see this family operated business close down, but this is the choice of the owners.

Anything For A Buck

The Daily Times has got to be absolutely, positively desperate. Not only are they desperate they are despicable, deplorable, contemptible, disgraceful, ignominious, loathsome, detestable,low-life, mean spirited, no-good, reprehensible, shameful, slimy, vile, worthless, wretched and anything else that describes your heartless attempt at making a buck while completely disregarding this family and the community in which they live. Without question Greg Bassett would be in the unemployment line lickety split, if he worked for me. Have these people no heart? They print an article and post photos of the tragedy in Willards, this is what newspapers do BUT, they then offer the pictures for sale? Not only for sale but offer them as Christmas ornaments? Those rotten SOB's should rot in hell for their callousness. If I was a subscriber to the that rag of a newspaper I most certainly would not be after seeing this. Greg Bassett, YOU SUCK!!! You are responsible for the content of that rag and the website. I don't care what you say, posting those photos and making them available for sale as GIFTS is beyond comprehension. Don't try using the excuse that you couldn't remove the sale pricing and gift items, it's all a matter of programming and YOUR techs KNOW this.

I encourage everyone reading this to take a look at the links, verify what we are saying and then call the Daily Times and demand these photos not be available for sale as GIFT ITEMS. Let your voices be heard, NOW. Send Greg Bassett a clear message, this will not be tolerated. 410-749-7171

Continuing Saga of Barrie's Abuse/Misuse of Office

We received phone calls this morning about the Dept of Public Works being over in Barrie's neighborhood cleaning up the leaves that were swept into the street by the residents. We were told that Barrie told the neighbors to just sweep them into the gutter and she'll have DPW send a crew to clean it up. Well low and behold, Public Works came to the rescue of Barrie and her neighbors. How fortunate for the neighbors of Barrie Tilghman to have additional services not afforded other taxpayers in the city. Way to use your resources Barrie. NOT!!! Business as usual on the city side of the GOB

From what we're told, it is unlawful to rake your leaves then sweep them to the street. In city limits the leaves must be bagged and the city trash service will pick them up. Isn't there is a fine involved for sweeping large piles of leaves into the street. Didn't Gary Comegys recently say people should clean up after themselves and not expect the city to do it for you? Maybe he meant everywhere BUT his neighborhood?

All Dressed Up And No One To Show

Look around Folks. Almost every table at the Red Cross Holiday Luncheon was full. OH, BUT WAIT A MINUTE, THERE'S NO ONE AT BARRIE TILGHMAN'S TABLE. But, wait a second, Barrie is standing there staring ME down, she must have friends somewhere, right? NOT!

Once the Mayor realized that Joe Albero actually had MORE friends at this event, OH BOY, she turned beet red and stormed out of the event before things got started. One individual witnessed the Mayor storming out of the building breaking a walking speed limit before breaking into a trot.

Hey Barrie, not for nothing Babe but it's over. I have never seen such a lonely sight where people were actually afraid to be seen talking to this woman and honest to God, I felt bad for her. I don't ever say honest to God and not tell the truth. Now what was it I said in that e-mail to Barrie Tilghman a few years ago that started all this trouble between the Mayor and the Blogs. It seems to be slipping me at the moment. Oh well, it must not have been a big deal but I sure wish I could remember because I'd love to use it again with this photo because for some reason I think it would prove I WAS RIGHT!

Barrie Tilghman has in fact chosen to move forward with her Lawsuit against me. The Court Date is January 21st and I STRONGLY recommend everyone show up for this Show because this is going to be bitchin. Now let's see. If I lose, it would be the first time someone one's First Amendment Rights were taken away by a Public Figure. Now if that happens, I'd lose $9,999.00. WOOHOO! That's gonna hurt! Oh, that's right though. If I lose it will become NATIONAL NEWS and everyone and their brother from around the United States/World will instantly learn of Salisbury News. Can YOU tell me what it would cost to get that kind of advertising?

Now, if I win, in which I will either way, (as you can now see) the Mayor will get the spanking in Court she's deserved for MANY YEARS. Now that I'm almost to the end of this Post, I'm not feeling so sorry for her again, are you?

Oh well, there was a thousand people talking about how NO ONE showed up for Barrie Tilghman's Table and many even mentioned how toasted she was at the Tree Lighting Ceremony a couple of weeks ago. She was yelling on stage, THISSSS ISSSS MY FAVVVVVORITE PARRRT OF TTTHE SSSSEASONNNNNNN. HICKUP!

Have a great day today Barrie. See Ya In Court!

Friday Will Be A Busy Day For Me

I was reviewing Friday's Schedule for WalMart and Sam's Club and it turns out Sam's is pretty well covered. WalMart, however, doesn't look good for the day.

That being said, I will be covering the Grocery end of WalMart from 9-1. The Retail end from 2-6 and then back to the Grocery end from 7-9 PM. Anyone interested in helping out, what can I say, I'd greatly appreciate that very much.

The old legs, knees and feet aren't what they used to be. Nevertheless, I will survive. Earlssister will be posting the updated schedule. Can YOU think of where we could market companies or interest to help out? We'd love to know your ideas.

Have a great day Folks. Oh, I thought I'd close with this. One of the biggest questions I get out there is, do you hear the bell in your sleep. The answer is, YES!

Help Me, Help You. As busy as I've been this past week ringing the bell, I have still continued to put up Posts to keep the Blog alive. Today I will be out there for 12 hours because we haven't received enough help to fill in the gaps. Come on Folks, pitch in, will ya?

A Thing Of Beauty

Im not sure if you have seen this yet. These puppies are soooo cute. There are 6 of them and you can watch them play, sleep and be little brats. Thought you might like to share this. They turn the cam off at night so if its off air when you visit the sight try back later.

A Prayer Worth Remembering

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk
who cut us off in traffic last night is a single
mother who worked nine hours that day and is
rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework,
do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with
her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed,
disinterested young man who can't make change
correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student,
balancing his apprehension over final exams with his
fear of not getting his student loans for next
semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging
for money in the same spot every day is a slave to
addictions that we can only imagine in our worst
nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking
annoyingly slow through the store aisles and
blocking our shopping progress are savoring this
moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report
she got back last week, this will be the last year
that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the
gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is
not enough to share that love with those we hold
dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are
close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to
judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy
and love.

Amen

PARKER POND DRAW-DOWN SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 9TH

Wicomico County Public Works has scheduled a draw-down on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Parker Pond. The purpose of the procedure is to inspect the weir, the device at the water spill-over point. If the inspection indicates that maintenance work is required, another draw-down may be scheduled for January. Fishing is prohibited in Parker Pond during the draw-down period.

Found Dog In Delmar

Joe-
Could you do me a big favor? Please put this found dog on your blog. The dog in the pix has been running around the Delmar, MD neighborhood here for a couple of days now. I took him in as I was afraid he'd freeze to death. He's obviously someone's pet. He has a black collar on, along with a flea collar. He's tiny- weighs less than 10 pounds, and is quite adorable, friendly and lovable. Very mellow and quiet. Not your average yappy little dog. If anyone knows who he belongs to, they can reach me at 443-359-5299. I can't keep him for long. My Rottweiler would use his as a chew toy.

Thanks!

Ernie
