320 Comments So Far Today

Look, you people need to slow down! The 320 comments I mention are just the ones we accepted and have NOTHING to do with the many comments we approved from comments on yesterday's Posts and so forth that came in today. This has got to be one of the busiest days we've ever had comment wise.

Last night I got 4 hours sleep and I haven't stopped running around all day. There are so many things to do for tomorrow and quite frankly, I'm worn out! I can't thank my partner who moderates for me whenever I'm not around and I have to tell you something funny.

When I was driving home today I called and asked how things were going. They said, "HOW DO YOU PUT UP WITH ALL THESE NUTS?" They went on to say that they didn't care what people think, if they complain about their comment not going up, tell them I rejected them because I'm not putting up with all this crap. ROTFLMAO, welcome to my world! I know we had to have received more than 600 comments today but like I said, many went to Posts from yesterday and or other days.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is, quit sending in the personal attacks. Firefighters, come on now, you guys will turn on each other like nothing I've ever seen before. I don't care what you think about me personally but man, if you only knew what we reject regularly on the Fire Department Posts, it's unbelievable. For those of you who think I'm in this for the massive comments, well, we'd accept all of those comments then, wouldn't we? You can clearly tell how many we reject, if you're one of the nasty people.

We already have a pretty good idea who John Robinson and Jonathan Taylor are when they try to stir things up on here, so I think we weed out most of those comments but the goal here is to try and make Salisbury News even more productive. If you have a good point while disagreeing with our Post, that's great. Bringing on L. Caruso, Two Sentz and even GA Harrison is even helping me to keep in check more often. I know I'm working on it and hopefully everyone sees yet another positive change in me. I'm at all these meetings and I deal with many of these people daily, so it's a bit more frustrating for me because I know the BS behind some of these people. However, to make things better I'm working on it.

All in all, sometimes less is better. I think a new policy on Salisbury News is going to be, no more personal attacks. If you do so, we're rejecting it. You're not going to hurt our business if you don't like that and claim you're never coming back. We eliminated the curse words and our volume of readership went up quite a bit. Now if we get rid of the personal attacks I think we'll get rid of the John Robinson's and Jonathan Taylor's as that's all their interested in doing anyway.

Thanks for coming by and we especially appreciate all of the comments, even though you're wearing us out. I really think Salisbury News has proven to be a great place to share our thoughts, your thoughts as well as blowing off a little steam.

What Gary Comegys Really Showed You Last Night

Salisbury Councilman (and mayoral candidate) Gary Comegys made an impassioned argument for inclusion of an $800,000+ fire boat in the city's capital improvement plan (CIP).  To the casual watcher, it may have even been persuasive.

However, what the attentive watcher saw was a glimpse into the higher taxes and more spending that would be endured under a continuation of the Barrie Comegys regime.

Ireton tops $7,000 in Contributions

Candidate for Salisbury Mayor, Jim Ireton, exceeded $7,000 in donations with 110 contributions by overnight February 24, 2009. The average contribution is $64. Ireton filed his contribution disclosure with Brenda Colegrove, City Clerk, yesterday.

"We are thrilled with the support that Salisbury has shown for Jim." said campaign manager Chuck Cook.

Ireton added, "In this economy, for citizens to contribute as they have is humbling. I am very grateful for each and every contribution. I am ecstatic about the support from citizens who are elected officials, those associated with the university, and from friends that I have had in my hometown since I was a young man. So many citizens are hearing our message about reducing crime, making government open and accessible, and cleaning up the Wicomico River. I appreciate their financial support and look forward to serving Salisbury as Mayor. Help is on the way!"

A reminder that polls are open on Primary Day, March 3, 2008, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Polling places for municipal elections are printed on the back of voter cards, on sample ballots, or can be determined by calling the Wicomico County Board of Elections at 410-548-4830.

Don Cathcart Says, Vote For Gary Comegys

The letter below is a copy of what the Daily Times printed in today's paper. Folks, I encourage you to click on the link I provided just to see the comments there alone. There's not one in support of Gary Comegys. In fact, some comments detail Mr. Cathcart's support of the 14% Tax Increase and many other issues. Here's what I think is important. Since there's only about 4 or 5 comments there, we all know there will be lots more here because we draw far more on line traffic than the Daily Times does. Nevertheless, I'm curious as to what OUR viewers think of such a letter. Don Cathcart is the Husband of Lynn Cathcart, a former Salisbury City Councilwoman.

Gary Comegys' performance on the City Council has established that he is highly qualified and uniquely suited to be mayor of our city. His record proves that he has acted to make our streets safer, strengthen neighborhoods, make government more efficient and improve our environment.

In the area of public safety, he supported construction of new fire department headquarters and renovation of Fire Station 1. He voted to authorize new positions for the fire department to enable staffing of three 24/7 paramedic units, and voted to raise salaries and improve the pension systems of police, firefighters and EMS personnel.

In focusing on neighborhood improvement he supported new landlord licensing and rental property registration legislation; he addressed the "4-to-2" issue in revised rental property regulations, and supported creation of the Neighborhood Services and Code Compliance Department to promote improvement of Salisbury's housing stock.

In making "growth pay for growth," he supported legislation that stopped the practice of reimbursing developers for infrastructure enhancements/ expansion, saving the city millions; voted to institute sewer and water capacity fees and supported the adoption of an annexation policy that benefits the city and its taxpayers.

With respect to the environment, he supported development of a new wastewater treatment plant, a "living shoreline" project in the city park and the establishment of an Environmental Policy Task Force.

Also, he participated in crafting agreements that led to the completion of the Northeast Collector Road and the demolition of the old mall.

Examine the record; elect Gary Comegys mayor.

Don Cathcart

A Message I Received About Last Night's City Council Meeting

A boat fire is a boat fire; the boat is insured and gone in the first minute. If the fire spreads to the fuel station, a fire truck with foam is needed. Even if the fire boat is so equipped, I have this vision in my head of a bunch of firemen at night driving to the boat in a fire truck, getting out and trying to get the fireboat started (“who brought the keys?”) and untied from the dock while the boat fire (which could have been put out by the truck) rages in the back ground!!!!

I think ALL of you did an excellent job of calling Gary and Barrie out not only on the spending issues, but the veil of secrecy used to pack the pork projects. I think the one issue that came out as the biggest surprise to everyone was the refurbishing of the water tube, as it was clearly NOT outlined in the PowerPoint Presentation!

It was fun, also, to watch Barrie, after seeing the first vote go against her wishes then losing her smoke and mirrors speech scuttle off in a huff to the crying room! HHHOOOOOOOOTTTT! What a petulant old hag!

Thanks to all speakers for showing up and doing such a fine job for the citizens of Salisbury.

Gary Comegys Can Part The Wicomico River Too

Only the right hand man of God can put a fire out on water with water. I seems even Exxon nor any other Gas Company can put a fire out on water with water but Gary Comegys is convinced, you just give him $860,000.00 worth of fire boat and let me tell you, he'll not just part the Wicomico River and walk on water, he'll figure out a way to put that fuel fire out with water. I BELIEVE!

Some have said that Joe Albero doesn't just have a Blog, he's got a Cult going on and every one of his followers are called "little Joey's." Well little Joey's, are you a believer? Has-a Mr. Comegys-a converted you-a? If so, don't just reach down in that pocket for that donation, REACH A WAY A DOWN A IN THAT POCKET AND DELIVER!

You know why? Because, (Bubba Math) there's a 99.9% chance that you'll never see one of these fires throughout the lifetime of that YACHT. It's standard Bobbanomics Folks. That Bridge won't be up 99.9% of the time, you know how it works. Are you a believer?

So Gary, how many men does it take to man that Yacht? What does it cost to maintain that Yacht? Ladies & Gentlemen, the average maintenance on a Vessel like this is at least 15% a year too. That's around $129,000.00 a year in maintenance! Oh, sorry, they forgot to mention that too. Does that come with the Grant Money too? Gary Comegys will bring you to the promise land, you just wait and see.

Heck, the man said in a recent forum, if we're gonna have landscaping in the City, I believe we should maintain that landscaping. How's it working for you on the Plaza Folks? Gary Comegys will grow Government like you've never seen before.

Salisbury University is an asset to our community

One of the things that made me fall in love with Salisbury was Salisbury University.  I had lived in a "college town" before.  Many college towns embrace their college, they are grateful for the employment opportunities, thankful that the students boost the economy and pleased that many graduates, stay and offer much to the community.

It does not appear to be the case here in Salisbury.  Why?  I want to start a dialog, we need solutions.  I have thought about this for a long time and I still don't have the answer.

We all know it is an excellent university.  We had family come in this weekend and they were so impressed with the campus.  It is beautiful.  There is clearly a housing issue and the President has not connected well with the community.  I still cannot spell her name unless I look it up!

Students volunteer a lot in this community.  They volunteer for many youth sports teams and student teachers have been a very positive influence.  The nursing school is filling a huge need.  Yes there have been "bumps" but with that many young people coming into the area there will be.  I will take "rowdy" college kids over gangs any day.

The University brings culture and entertainment with the symphony, theatre and college sports
Leaders come from the university and contribute to local clubs, churches and non profits. Whether some of the readers agree or not more higher educated people per capita DO make a community more desirable.  The University can attract new businesses to the area --that is our next topic.

An effective president of a university does embrace the community, has this one?
Salisbury is fairly conservative, but academicians are typically liberal.  There are even some in academics that have an "elitist" attitude and that does not jive well on the Eastern Shore, especially with the locals.  Is this part of the problem?

Housing - students living on campus make the university.  When looking at universities many parents won't even consider a school unless they guarantee housing.  What is being done to accommodate the students without putting pressure on the community and neighborhoods?  I am not getting into 4-2 and landlords right now because that is being used purely for politics, presently.  He said, she said.

I don't think the University is doing enough regarding housing.  They are leaving it up to the private sector and that is what is dividing our town.  Our elected officials must do more to make the University more accountable for housing and protecting their students.

When a student behaves badly, the community goes nuts.  Yes, they need to be punished but this blog was practically encouraging a "lynching".  I know people involved from the university and they were just as appalled by the students behavior.  They care about this community and were very concerned for the citizens involved but they still had to follow procedures and protocols.  Our legal system at its best.

Clearly we all need to do more, starting with our elected officials, community leaders and university administration.  Salisbury University is a true asset to our community, it raises our quality of life on several levels.

I want to hear your opinion, we need viable solutions.  I hope some of you can actually stay on topic, please.

Next - What is Salisbury doing to attract new business to the area?

Transferring To Salisbury

On a flight getting ready to depart for Salisbury...

Jack was sitting on the plane when a guy took the seat beside

him. The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking,

moaning in fear. "What's the matter?" Jack asked.

"I've been transferred to Salisbury, there's crazy people there.

They've got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor

public schools, and the highest crime rate."

Jack replied, "I've lived in Salisbury all my life. It's not as bad

as the blogs say. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your

own business, enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as

safe a place as anywhere in the state."

The guy relaxed and stopped shaking and said, "Oh, thank you.

I've been worried to death. But if you live there and say it's OK,

I'll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?"

"Me?" said Jack. "I'm a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck."

Salisbury News Is Temporarily Shut Down

I can't respond to any more emails today, something has crashed on my computer.

and the mouse is missing.

Response To Daily Times On Crime

Friends,

The situation of crime is an issue close to my heart. I lived in Salisbury during my collegiate career. I was able to earn an outstanding education from Salisbury University and represent my Alma Matter as a four year varsity athlete in two sports. Salisbury was a great fit and had some of my most fond memories ever. Unfortunately while living in Salisbury I had my most horrendous experiences ever.

My first three years in Salisbury, 2002 to the beginning of 2005, we had no reservations about walking around Salisbury nor was there a talk of crime. Occasionally someone would get jumped and that was all you hear about. Things drastically changed for the worse spring of 2005. While living in Cedar Crossing, a.k.a. “The New Zoo”, off of Onley I had my house broken into, I was at my house when a man was shot and killed at the Old Zoo which is right next to the development, had numerous female neighbors wake up to strange men in their house, and my neighbors houses were broken into. Needless to say I felt a bit uneasy when school was out because I was one of the few in the development because of work and training.

While at my friends’ apartment on Shiloh Street, spring 2005 I believe, we were watching a movie when we heard 5 quick pops in a row and minutes later SPD rolled up to the scene. A man from another apt. a door down came out and shot up a parked car and the bullets went into a family’s house across the street.

One night leaving my girlfriend’s at the time UP apartment when she got back that Sunday from Thanksgiving and we were mugged at gunpoint during the mugging spree in 2006 while in bright lights and there were people returning to SU. These three were brash. Fortunately they were eventually caught and I thank all the law enforcement agencies who helped apprehend these thugs. What ended up making our stomachs curl even more was that we learned they were responsible for a murder stemming from a robbery across from Bennett. Talk about a close call.

For 21 years I went without a breeze of a crime coming near me and then all of a sudden I was immersed in crime. All of this happened while I was doing my normal routine in normal college areas during times that were not late. These are areas right next to the college except for the Shiloh incident and none are in rough areas or so I thought.

When reading the Daily Times article “Spate of crimes not a big trend Statistics rise and fall, but Salisbury remains a safe place” I was very much disappointed and angered that the Daily Time would print “damage control” to paint Salisbury as “safe”. Yes crime happens, but not normally at this rate or notoriety. It is an insult to all who have been victims of crime, especially violent ones, to say the area is safe because it is not being truthful about our situation. And I know too many who have been victims of crime including armed muggings.

What good end does this article accomplish? Nothing. What does this article bring to the table to solve the problem? Nothing. Does this article identify the problems? No. All it adds is an attempt to smoke screen the amount of crime. The crimes this year alone is not the reason for the cry that crime is up. The last few years have all added to the reoccurring theme of increased crime. We all know the long list of crimes.

A problem exists when people are doing their normal routine, at regular places, during normal times and are victims of crimes. How much more reasonable can you be than doing your daily routine responsibly? My friends who graduated before me cannot believe what has happened in Salisbury since they have left. I have friends who swore off Salisbury because of crime and that is unfortunate because there is still a lot of good in the area.

I do not feel as safe in Salisbury as I once did and will not regain that sense of security until the amount of crime is quelled. I do appreciate, as I saw first hand Saturday night, the amount of law enforcement presence out being proactive. That is what it is going to take to combat crime.

I ask the Daily Times to be more truthful in their commentaries on crime and paint an accurate picture of the status of Salisbury whether it is good or bad. That is the responsibility of the media especially on a topic that should never be political or partisan. We are talking not only about the safety of each individual but also the quality and health of our community as a whole. Only truthful discourse and dissemination of information and fact will lead to our ability to effectively respond to our situation.

To our law enforcement officers I hope that you are able to come home safe every night and I wish the best for everyone such that they never experience what I have gone through.

Nicholas Loffer

Thank you John Fager!

Reopening the Atlantic Hotel is such a blessing for downtown Berlin.  The John Fagers and Frank Hannas do so much for our community.

No Speak English

A Russian woman married a Canadian gentleman and they lived happily ever after in Toronto . The poor lady was not very proficient in English, but did manage to communicate with her husband. The real problem arose whenever she had to shop for groceries.

One day, she went to the butcher and wanted to buy chicken legs. She didn't know how to put forward her request, and in desperation, clucked like a chicken and lifted up her skirt to show her thighs. Her butcher got the message, and gave her the chicken legs.

Next day she needed to get chicken breasts, again she didn't know how to say it, and so she clucked like a chicken and unbuttoned her blouse to show the butcher her breasts. The butcher understood again, and gave her some chicken breasts.

On the 3rd day, the poor lady needed to buy sausages. Unable to find a way to communicate this, she brought her husband to the store...

What were you thinking?

Hellooooooo, her husband speaks English!

Now get back to your emails.

I don't know about you sometimes...

(TRENTON, NJ – Feb. 20) This week, Attorney General Eric Holder said “Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial, we have always been and we -- I believe continue to be in too many ways essentially a nation of cowards.” Well, allow me to take the rare opportunity to agree with Mr. Holder. Sorry folks, yes we are.

When people are uneasy about a black person making jokes about black people in general (and it’s the tamest of jokes,) we have a problem. If ethnicity is brought up in conversation and someone tries to diffuse it by saying, “I do not see Black and White, I see American,” that’s a problem. When people are afraid of disagreeing with someone because of their color…for example, when some Whites disagreed with Obama and it had everything to with his policies is not his race. They were afraid to speak out because they would have been labeled a racist. In my case, I would have been labeled a sellout. That is a BIG problem.

When people say, “Why do we need to talk about having a dialogue on race, we always have this whenever something racial happens?” Complaining about talking about race is a problem, and here is why we need to have the dialogue. For starters, the people who don’t want to talk about it anymore would like to avoid the issue, either because the wrong people have been using race for their own personal gain OR because they are afraid to be labeled as a racist (as stated in the example in the last paragraph.)

There also has not been an honest dialogue about it in my opinion. America needs to acknowledge that its past has been super ugly, and I don’t mean mention it casually and brush it aside as if all is right with the world. The truth is that America has a long way to go to achieving racial harmony. This has been proven recently where The New York Post can draw a cartoon in poor taste. While it is the New York Post’s right to publish the cartoon, it is equally everyone’s right to be offended by it. In addition to that, both sides of the aisle have been guilty at times with using the resentment of Blacks and Whites for political gain.

Let’s go back to the recent election, where many people in general were afraid to show dissent against then-Presidential candidate Obama. If Whites dissented, they would have been viewed as a racist. If blacks (like me) did not agree with President Obama, we get called with sellouts or self-haters. I was recently told to finish my Clorox bath when I reminded the unapologetically Black community that President Obama was running things, not us.

Everything is not a racial incident. When we are afraid to disagree with policy because of racial concerns, then we are indeed wimps about the subject. America has some pondering to do, before we accuse Holder of trying to stir the pot.

Girl Scouts Shrink Cookies, Customers Shrink Sales

I don't care if it came from the USA Today or the Daily Times, I was right and they were wrong.

Girl Scout Cookies are somewhat of an American icon. They're not necessarily the best cookies anyone has ever made, and the portions certainly aren't of a generous size. In fact, the Girl Scouts are taking heat this year for reducing the number of cookies in each box by about 2, thanks to drastic increases in the price of ingredients. But there are plenty of consumers who have their favorites (such as Thin Mints) which they wait for each year (no matter how many cookies are in a box!). Even better, many consumers understand the importance of selling these cookies. It's a chance for the Girl Scouts to learn a little bit about the business world and entrepreneurship. Sure, their parents and troop leaders often do the bulk of the work. But for interested Scouts, there is an opportunity to learn firsthand.

Last year we debated here about how worthwhile the exercise of selling cookies is. The local troops get a small portion (about 15%) of the sales price of a box of cookies to fund local events. Some consumers say that's just not enough for all their hard work. I'd say it's a fundraising model that has worked for years to fund local operations, as well as national and regional operations. If you can spare a few bucks, please buy a box or two of Girl Scout cookies. If you're on a diet, give the cookies away. The Girls Scouts of the USA has done so much for so many young girls, and I can't bear the thought of it not surviving this recession. I know consumers have to be careful with their money, but this group is really a cause that is worth of a few dollars from you.

A New Truck

I bought a new GMC Sierra and returned to the dealer
yesterday because I couldn't get the radio to work.

The salesman explained that the radio was voice activated.

'Nelson,' the salesman said to the radio.
The radio replied, 'Ricky or Willie?'

'Willie!' he continued and 'On The Road Again'
came from the speakers.

Then he said, 'Ray Charles!', and in an instant
'Georgia On My Mind' replaced Willie Nelson.

I drove away happy, and for the next few days, every time
I'd say, 'Beethoven,' I'd get beautiful classical music,
and if I said, 'Beatles,' I'd get one of
their awesome songs.

Yesterday, some guy ran a red light and
nearly creamed my new truck, but
I swerved in time to avoid them.

I yelled, 'A-holes!'

Immediately the Iranian National Anthem began to play,
sung by Jane Fonda and Barbara Streisand, backed up by
Michael Moore and The Dixie Chicks, with John Kerry
on guitar, Al Gore on drums, Dan Rather on harmonica,
Nancy Pelosi on tambourine, Harry Reid on spoons,
Bill Clinton on sax and Ted Kennedy On Scotch.

Dang, I LOVE this truck!

Think There's No More Oil Left?????

GOOGLE it or follow this link. It will blow your mind.
http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=1911

The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota ; western South Dakota ; and extreme eastern Montana .... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.

'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.' says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years.' reports, The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin , but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from Northern Montana , through North Dakota and into Canada . For years, U. S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves... and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years straight. And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one should - because it's from TWO YEARS AGO!

U. S. Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World! Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006

Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction.

They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth.

Here a re the official estimates:

- 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
- 18-times as much oil as Iraq
- 21-times as much oil as Kuwait
- 22-times as much oil as Iran
- 500-times as much oil as Yemen

- and it's all right here in the Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil!

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.
