INFANT HOMICIDE UNDER INVESTIGATION

(Sykesville, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a Carroll County child who died Tuesday after being taken to the hospital with apparent respiratory problems.

The child is identified as Ky’leigh M. Rogers, 8 months, of the 900-block of Caren Drive, Sykesville, Md. Rogers was pronounced dead at the Carroll Hospital Center at about 4:30 p.m. on March 3, 2009.

Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barracks were contacted by staff at the Carroll Hospital Center shortly before the baby died. Troopers responding to the hospital learned that the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department ambulance had transported the child earlier in the afternoon after responding to a 9-1-1 call from the child’s home reporting the child was having trouble breathing.

Investigators from the State Police Westminster Barracks and the Carroll County Child Advocacy Center began an initial investigation. The preliminary investigation led police to contact the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit. Homicide investigators are continuing the investigation, with assistance from the Westminster Barracks Criminal Investigation Section.

The child’s body was transported to the Office of the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The autopsy on Wednesday revealed the child died from blunt force trauma and the death was ruled a homicide.

State Police investigators are working closely with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office. No charges have been filed in connection with the death of the child at this time. The investigation is continuing.

3 Years ago my Wife Jennifer and I took the long journey to Kentucky several times to purchase Foals in order to rescue them from slaughter. We know the stress it puts these animals under and tonight 19 wonderful dogs made that same journey.

Their temperaments are surprisingly very loving, tails just a wagging away and happy to have a place to call home, hopefully it's very temporary. The big question I think everyone will be asking is, when can we see them? I'm told you can go by some time tomorrow afternoon. Pretty much all of these dogs will be small to medium size and they're just adorable. I'll try to post more pictures later.

Folks, if you have the room to spare, the heart to love an animal, (or even two) and really appreciate being welcomed home every day by man's best friend, consider adopting one of these animals. Wait till you get out there and see them in person!

I just finished reading the 6 comments on your blog and feel the need to respond if that is ok. The Humane Society of the United States contacted Kevin Usilton of the Delaware Humane Association and asked if he could help place 61 of the dogs from the situation in Kentucky. He said yes and called and asked if we could assist and we said yes. While I fully understand that there are animals here in need of homes, we are a Humane Society...how could we refuse to help? It is what we do and why we are here. It is similiar to the situation with Hurricane Katrina...help came from all over the United States. We do all we can to help all of the animals that come to our doors. We do so with the help of people who also have a heart for animals and want to help. We came back with 19 dogs, of which 6 went to the Talbot County Humane Society. All of the dogs we brought back are very social and sweet and will make good family companions. And it is our goal to get them to forever homes. If someone can help make that a reality then they will get back far more than they give...as they would with any pet they take into their home and life. I am sorry that there are people out there who believe we are wasting our time and resources...
but again, I would ask them, how do you refuse to help in a situation where there is a need and you can help? It is what we do, it is why we are here and I have never been more proud to be associated with the Humane Society of Wicomico County. A Kentucky Man Charged With Nearly 300 Counts of Animal Cruelty! A Kentucky man was found hording some 300 dogs and cats this past Friday. At this very moment, the Director of the Wicomico Humane Society Linda Lugo is on her way back from Wilmington, Delaware with 19 of the dogs recovered and alive from this property. A few will continue on their way to Talbot County after a very long journey on a tractor trailer that left Kentucky last evening. Linda mentioned a Jack Russell mix on board as well as the fact that all of these dogs have mange. A curable mange, mind you but they'll be quarantined for 7 to 10 days and then they'll become available to the public. So if there's ever a time the WHS needs your help, this is it. Linda said ALL of these dogs are very sweet and will make fantastic pets. I will deliver more to you on this story as it progresses.

Detectives Seek Publics’ Help In Identifying Burglary Suspect

Location of Incident: Nemours Clinic- 252 Chapman Road, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Monday, March 2, 2009, between 2:52 p.m. to 6:51 p.m.

Suspect(s): Black male, 28 – 34 years old, 6’00” to 6’02” tall, 175 to 185 pounds, average build, medium brown skin tone, wearing a yellow jacket, tan sport coat, white Nike Sneakers and black gloves

Resume: Detectives from the Troop 2 Burglary Squad are investigating an incident which took place on Monday afternoon at the Nemours Clinic on Chapman Road.

In this incident, a male suspect entered the office, which was open and operational, and roamed freely about the business. Because of heavy snow fall this day, only a few employees were at work and no patients were present. Investigators noted the suspect was confronted by the employees, however, the suspect played off his being in the office saying he was lost.

The suspect was captured on surveillance video as he removed three lap top computers valued at approximately $3,000.00. With the property in hand, the suspect fled the business in an unknown direction. It was noted that during the caper, the suspect changed his clothes in an attempt to conceal his identity.

No patient information was compromised in this incident.

Chief Investigator William Hardin Reinstated? NOT!

Back on July 25th 2008 Chief Investigator William Hardin was formally escorted out of the WCDC and basically terminated.

Mr. Hardin appealed this action and had a hearing two weeks ago in which he came to learn today that the Board overturned Warden Doug Devenyns decision and reinstated Mr. Hardin back to work.

Mr. Hardin immediately went in this morning to the Wicomico County Human Resources and asked what steps he should take to go back to work. Mr. Mark Thompson said, just go back to work. I'm sure there are some details about back pay and so forth that need to be resolved but Bill and I have been in contact with one and other from the very beginning on this matter and quite frankly I have ALWAYS been amazed at how the Warden has handled it.

Nevertheless, Bill got in his car and headed directly to the Detention Center, walked in and was greeted by the Staff, shaking hands, hugs and even some tears. Bill attempted to get to his old Office when someone approached Bill and said, The Warden Doug Devenyns wants you escorted from the building immediately. Bill respectfully replied, I was reinstated, didn't you get the information? Yes, the Warden has instructed me to tell you to go out and get a lawyer, you're not coming back into his building. They proceeded to walk Bill out and he contacted me right away.

Since our conversation I have had the opportunity to speak with County Executive Rick Pollitt who asked me to express the following.

"Joe, as you know I just found out about this. We're going to make it right and we're NOT going to take a lot of time in doing so either."

I would like everyone at the WCDC to know that Mr. Pollitt has been following the Posts her on Salisbury News and has taken your comments quite seriously. In fact, Mr. Pollitt has met with several of the Staff there one on one to make sure the things that have been expressed are valid.

Here's my prediction. I do NOT think the Warden Doug Devenyns will be the Warden for very much longer at the WCDC. This Appeal Board is not a Board in which someone can take lightly. Every single charge they placed on Bill Hardin has been reversed and that in itself speaks volume! There seems to be an axe to grind and I personally do not think that Mr. Devenyns likes the fact that Mr. Hardin is being taken seriously now as Devenyns tried to destroy his name and reputation because Mr. Hardin did an internal report, (in which I have personally seen and read) and it does NOT look good on the Warden, PERIOD!

Like Mr. Pollitt has stated, I doubt it will take very long for them to make some changes and if anyone has a good head on their shoulders they'll come to realize that Mr. Hardin is not only a good man, he does his job extremely well and even perhaps too well, right Mr. Devenyns? I don't think the Warden, (perhaps former Warden) has a clue the position he has just placed the County in, liability wise. Either way, sit tight Folks because this is just the beginning. Remember, while this WILL become HUGE news locally, you heard it here first and that goes for the Daily Times too. No doubt they'll all be ringing the phones off the hook any second now.

Candidates And Voters Brave The Cold. Well, Candidates Anyway!

It made me sick to visit the District 1 Polls and see so many fine volunteers spending their day from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM watching the paint dry on the walls. You'd get more action with watching the paint dry than Citizens actually coming out to vote.

It seems the Candidates took this election day far more seriously than the Citizens but I'm convinced once a new tone is set in the Mayors Office you'll see lots more people voting in the future.

The Bob Caldwell news is exciting but again, it truly bothers me again that yet another election will come down to just a few votes. What's wrong with you people in Salisbury?

OK, on another note. The Tilghman/Comegys Group have clearly lost their stance in Salisbury. I don't care what the outcome is in the end here, Comegys cannot win. There's going to be a LOT of people looking for new jobs in a VERY trying time. One thing stands out more than anything said in all those Forums. While Gary Comegys said to Ireton, you just can't fire all these people. Ireton replied, There's going to be a whole new level of standards and if these people can't live up to them, they're gone. I'm paraphrasing but that's how it came off.

You people better get out there and vote in the General Election because you get bet your bottom dollar that Tilghman/Comegys/SAPPOA will do everything in their powers, (if they get the chance with Bubba) to get anyone and everyone to vote. ARE YOU LISTENING LOUD AND CLEAR FOLKS?

Location: 5600 block of O’Donnell Street, Baltimore, MD
Suspect: Terry Wayne Foskey, 41, Salisbury, MD

Narrative: On 5 March 2009, Baltimore Police arrested Terry Wayne Foskey of Salisbury after stopping him for a traffic violation and discovering an open warrant for his arrest that was held by the Wicomico Sheriff’s Office. The warrant had been issued in May 2007 and charged Foskey with failing to register as a Sex Offender. The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office had been tasked with keeping track of Foskey’s whereabouts and it was discovered that he moved and left no forwarding address. Because of this warrant, Foskey had been placed on Wicomico County’s "Most Wanted" List and had been featured on the Crime Solvers program of PAC14 and WBOC.

Foskey was transported to the Baltimore City Central Booking Unit where he is currently being held without bond pending his return to Wicomico County.

Mike Monsoor, a Navy EOD Technician, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor
posthumously for jumping on a grenade in Iraq, giving his life to save his fellow Seals.(Notice: Mike was not a Navy SEAL, he was EOD.He gave his life to save a group of Navy SEALS.)

During Mike Monsoor's funeral in San Diego, as his coffin was being moved from the hearseto the grave site at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery , SEAL's were lined up on both sidesof the pallbearers route forming a column of two's, with the coffin moving up the center. As Mike's coffin passed, each SEAL, having removed his gold Trident from his uniform, slapped it down embedding the Trident in the wooden coffin.

The slaps were audible from across the cemetery; by the time the coffin arrived grave side, it looked as though it had a gold inlay from all the Tridents pinned to it.

This was a fitting send-off for a warrior hero.

Residential Fire In Delmar

I received a call the other night telling me there was a house fire basically in my own back yard. One of my neighbors home on Blackwater Drive caught on fire and I was able to get there very early on to capture some of these photos. There were around 5 Stations brought in from as far as Laurel and you just wouldn't believe the line of Fire Trucks at the scene. I'm not complaining guys but quite honestly, it was such a cluster, seeing Fire Trucks lined up on Rt. 54 because Blackwater Drive was so loaded with vehicles, all of the others were pretty much useless. I understand, better to have more than less.

Nevertheless, the Firefighters worked hard and fast to get this under control and as cold as it was, you guys amaze me!

More thoughts on Salisbury's Primary Election

Jim Ireton won, and won big Tuesday night in the primary of the Salisbury mayoral race. Disclosure: I volunteered on a couple of occasions and made a bunch of phone calls Tuesday for Jim.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s look at what we know from the results, what’s reasonable to extrapolate from the data, and what comes next.

First, the raw numbers:

Registered Voters 12557 - Cards Cast 1394 - 11.10%
Total Votes - 2053

Robert Caldwell - 522 / 25.43%
Gary A. Comegys - 560 / 27.28%
Michael Della Penna - 132 / 6.43%
Jim Ireton - 839 / 40.87%

A few reminders about Salisbury's primary process:
* It is a non-partisan primary - no one has party affiliations next to their names.
* Each voter can select two candidates, but it not mandated to - if you desire, you can vote for just one.
* Voters cannot give both votes to just one candidate. You can vote for one, you can vote for two, but you can't vote for one twice.
*Top two candidates proceed to the general election, conveniently held a month later, April 7.

WHAT WE KNOW:
Jim Ireton will proceed to the general election with 40% of the cumulative vote total.

Gary Comegys currently holds a 38 vote lead over Robert Caldwell for the second and last spot on the general election ballot.

Absentee ballots will be counted Thursday. There are 149 to be counted. Those voters may have voted for one or two mayoral candidates, and there's no way of knowing until they are physically counted Thursday. We may have an additional 149 votes or an additional 398 votes. If they break the way the general did, about 60% will vote for one candidate only, and the remaining 40% will have voted for two. In either case, some, and probably a majority, of those ballots will be marked for Jim Ireton, either alone or in additional to Caldwell and Comegys.

WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW:
Gary Comegys should, but may not, advance as the second candidate. Since there's only a 38-vote difference, it's possible, though not probable, Robert Caldwell could pass him. But I'd rather be Gary Comegys than Robert Caldwell going into the absentee ballot count.

As Joe Albero, some of the math from Tuesday isn't heartening for Gary Comegys. There were 1394 voters in the election casting a total of 2,053 votes. That means, as Joe points out, that 738 people cast just one vote for mayor. And that's more than half the people who voted.

WHAT WE CAN GUESS:
Jim's 13 percentage point victory is a problem for Gary Comegys, no matter how he chooses to spin it. Even if you take the favorite theory of Comegys' apologists - that his people just voted for Comegys while Ireton piggybacked on outsider support for Caldwell along with Ireton's base - the numbers don't work for Comegys. Those "Caldwell and Ireton, too" votes would have to break somewhere on the order of 65/35 in favor of Comegys for him to overtake Jim Ireton. And I can't foresee a circumstance where Comegys picks up a substantial amount of Caldwell supporters, let alone two-thirds of them. If they were voting for Caldwell, and adding Ireton as a message or a second thought, they aren't going to suddenly switch to the government incumbent.

A vote for Caldwell was a vote against the status quo, and the status quo is exactly what Gary Comegys represents and wants to continue. If he wants to run on his record, there will be some very happy people running the Jim Ireton campaign.

QUESTIONS THAT ARE LEFT:
Does Gary Comegys go negative? Some of his supporters certainly are. Just browse the comments on delmarvanow.com and other local blogs. Some of the stuff is vile, and most importantly, irrelevant. I won't even validate the smears by repeating them here. It may indeed get worse. I wouldn't read the Grapevine on delmarvanow.com if you're squeamish until after the election. And you might want to wait an additional week.

Does Gary Comegys run on his own record, or against the 16 months Jim Ireton served on the City Council 10 years ago? He's kind of between a rock and a hard place - if he harps on Ireton's votes from a time when Clinton was still president, he's wallowing in the past. If he runs on his own record, he's opening himself to charges of being beholden to landlords and other special interests with the evidence being contained in his comments and votes while on the City Council. Don't be surprised if he tried to wage a campaign focused on Jim Ireton 10 years ago instead of Salisbury 10 years from now.

How does Jim Ireton deal with his time on the council? The facts are there - he was elected, and well short of the end of his term, he resigned and moved. Now he's back, and wants to be mayor. People are going to have tough questions he needs to be able to answer.

Is The Daily Times guilty of bias? More disclosure - I worked for The Daily Times as a reporter and editor for 3.5 years back in the early 1990s, and enjoy good personal relationships with Erick Sahler, Managing Editor, and Greg Bassett, Managing Editor. They were great co-workers, and have been great professionals in all my dealings with them since I left. I've called concerning stories on my Wi-Hi Wrestling Team and also when I worked on the campaign to reject the 2000 Revenue Cap proposal.

But I am left wondering after looking over some of the coverage in the last week. Politicians always complain they aren't treated fairly, so I was pretty cynical. But here's a few quotes from stories the last week that made me say "Huh? Really?"

From the Voter's Guide on Sunday, questionable phrasings in bold and italic:

"Ireton, 39, has been a teacher on and off for 17 years. He taught at St. Francis de Sales School in Salisbury from 1993-97 and at Northwestern Elementary in Mardela Springs from 1997-99. He served 17 months on the Salisbury City Council from April 1998 to August 1999 before quitting and taking odd jobs with Alternative Resources Corp. in Linthicum, Md., then came back to Salisbury to work at WBOC-TV for the remainder of 1999. From 2000-2004, he started a master's program at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and taught at Mount Royal Elementary/ Middle in Baltimore, then taught the next two years at Medfield Heights Elementary in Baltimore. He returned to the Lower Shore in 2006, teaching for two years at East Salisbury Elementary. His current place of employment is Westside Intermediate. Ireton is active in the Democratic Club and is chairman of the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress and a member of the city of Salisbury Recycling Committee."

Really, he's taught for the vast majority of those 17 years. Government officials traditionaly resign, not quit. And I have no idea why the writer used "taking odd jobs" as a description of his work in Linthicum. And why not note Jim's finished his master's degree, instead of just saying he started it? And he's a teacher at Westside Intermediate. Current place of employment? What's that's about?

And from the article concerning Tuesday's results:

SALISBURY -- Former councilman Jim Ireton made it through the city primary Tuesday by a landslide vote, more than 300 ahead of City Council Vice President Gary Comegys.

Comegys said he was still delighted to get the support he did.

"I'm going to work extra hard between now and the general election to win this," he said.

Ireton gave a confident speech to a captive audience at Flavors of Italy on Main Street.

"I'm going to be the next mayor," he said.

Well, Jim said a lot more than that, but that's a great quote for a reporter. But "made it through"? How about, oh, I don't know, WON? There's a pretty short way of saying what Jim Ireton did Tuesday.

But, more importantly to me, why does the man who just got beaten by 13 percentage points get the first quote? Everything I learned at the University of Maryland's Journalism school says most important first, then give facts in descending order of importance. So Gary Comgey's reaction is more important the the man who garnered 13 percent more votes?

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but there's a case to be made there's a pattern developing.

[TWO SENTZ Edit: If Jim got 839 votes and Gary got 560 votes and 839 - 560 = 279, then why did the reporter say "more than 300 ahead of City Council Vice President Gary Comegys." That's just plain embarrassing.]

Feds Come To The Albero Household Rescue

As most of you have become aware, I have received many death threats over the past few years. Most of them you have never seen but ALL of them have been forwarded to States Attorney Davis Ruark and Sheriff Mike Lewis.

I got into that practice with them mainly because I wanted them to look at them and decide if they felt they were ones in which I should be truly concerned about. Earls Sister is right, there have been threats to me personally as well as my Family.

That being said, yesterday I received a very welcomed phone call from a Special Agent with the Federal Government. I'll just leave it at that. The cool part is, they assure me that there's no doubt they can provide each and every person who sent in these threats and will simply hand deliver me their names and locations.

Ladies & Gentlemen, this is no joke. I was completely amazed at what they can do but clearly you have to know the right people to get something like this done. That being said, I have been truly Blessed by the individual who knew this person and reached out for help.

I have actually been hesitant to follow through with this because quite frankly I don't think it's just one or two people and quite honestly, I don't think they mean what they have said. Then there's the other side of me that thinks, what if it came from the Mayor's Office or the SPD? Man, what I wouldn't do to nail those two SOB's!

So as I ponder over what I want to do, I thought I'd share this information with ALL of you and IF any one of you is stupid enough to ever do something like this again, you have been warned. If I ever receive another death threat I am going to go to this contact and find out exactly who you are. You will then be prosecuted and throw in Jail for a very long time.

In the mean time, I'll let you know what I decide to do on the other threats very soon.

I have had a rough time keeping anything down since I got home.

Now let fill you in on what has been going on since Monday. The snow is not the only thing that is crazy. Monday morning came and my blood counts were low so I got a blood transfusion and I was vomiting a lot so the hospital decided to keep us an extra day. With the weather it was a good thing anyway, and besides by the time I would have been done with the transfusion it would have been 9PM by the time I was discharged. This Chemo round was brutal. I did get down to the playroom today and got some more Beads of Courage, I needed them after yesterday. I also had to start a new necklace of beads, I have just had so many things done in two months, my original necklace was just to big. Daddy, Mommy and me just stayed around the room today for the most part and watched what I wanted too. I was very tired and did not have much energy. I am so looking forward to going home. Tuesday was a typical crazy day trying to get discharged. Get everything in order and make sure all prescriptions, discharge instructions, appointments and everything else is all set up. Not to mention pack everything up and get it thru the hospital to the car. Oh yea, those ouchies started again! My poor little legs. We got all this done and we were on the road well ahead of rush hour traffic. I was a lot better on this ride home then in the past. We arrived home around 5PM and guess what? Miss Liz was actually walking Bailey bye our house and I got to see Bailey before I even got in the house. We came inside thru our newly insulated garage so my playroom will be nice and warm for me now. The new paint looked so pretty. I was inside and had found all this energy and I said to Miss Liz, “ Look I can walk now and it doesn’t hurt as I was actually running around.” (Tears in Mommy and Daddy’s eyes and I’m sure in Miss Liz’s too) This was short lived though, I was spinning around and fell and hit my head hard on the end of a corner on some shelf’s in the living room. I instantly got sick and lots of worries started for everyone. I did eventually get settled and I played Wii Mario Cart with Miss Liz and Mommy. I still did not feel too well and did not eat or drink much today. Daddy went to the store to get the basics and I called him on the phone to inform him he was sleeping downstairs, because I was sleeping in his bed with Mommy so I would not be scared tonight. I went to bed and slept really good.

Morning came, and today was no fun for anybody. I started getting sick right off the bat. I could not even keep the anti vomiting medicines down. As soon as I drank just a little bit of water up it came. Around 11AM, this is where I think Mommy spent the rest of the day on the phone with CHOP, Dr. Alverado’s office and PRMC. It was just very difficult trying to get me to a place down here where their would not be any sick people around me. Daddy stayed home and Nana came over to help out with me and Bailey. Aunt Kellie came over around 1PM also to give me my ouchie. Boy did she let Daddy have it for saying in a journal entry, YEA Miss Liz is back! I was so tired today and not feeling well that I did nothing and slept on the couch, I was actually asleep when they gave me my ouchie. You know I did not feel good, not to let them give me that needle so easily. Finally around 3PM we got the word we were going over to the ER at PRMC. They said it would only be about an hour of getting some fluids in me. We should all know by now that nothing is short. Daddy called Mommy at 7PM and said, “What is going on?” Daddy came to the ER to relieve Aunt Kellie who came with Mommy and stayed the whole time. Things were looking like they were starting to come around and then I got sick again. At least my stay so far was comforted by the fact that Dr. Dave tracked us down and told Mommy we could not hide from him and our good friends the Mull’s were both working tonight. Dr. Don was working the ER and Miss Karen was also working. They helped make me feel as comfortable as possible and were a HUGE help to Mommy! Miss Karen got Mommy dinner, thank goodness for that. Around 10PM things were not getting any better with my counts and that’s when the decision was made to send me in an ambulance to CHOP. Daddy quickly ran home to get some things to make Mommy and me as comfortable as possible when we got there. In the meantime I got an ouchie like I never had before. My sugar was off and they had to prick my finger, I lost it and Mommy was already frazzled. Daddy got back in time and they loaded me up, of all things Daddy had to take my car seat out of the car and they strapped that onto the bed in the ambulance. Daddy got some pictures and we all said goodbye and off we went to CHOP. Going with Mulford luck, Daddy sent us with a portable DVD player and after the first movie it broke! Poor Mommy. I arrived at CHOP around 1:30AM. Well I will fill you all in tomorrow as to what is going on. This time Daddy is not to blame for being behind, he has not had a chance to catch his breath this week, let alone type an entry. Pray for Brookie!

I do not know what to say after what Brooke told you all! Since Sunday night we do not know what day it is or where we are. Amy really does not know where she is. I am going to go home after this and get a little sleep and then head to CHOP. We were so looking forward to spending a little time at home.Well you have to say this is something different. You just never know day to day! Again we still just have to thank our support network so much. From friends and family coming over to helping out, friends in the hospital and the Early’s dinner that is now back in the fridge. At least the Bound’s dinner got put in the freezer. This is all crazy! We believe it was more a precautionary measure on CHOP’s part to monitor her and get her rehydrated. Hey, just got a text from Amy. It is 2:30AM and they are settled in and Brooke is asleep and Amy says Goodnight! That sounds like good news! I will fill everyone in more tomorrow!

PS. To Grandpa Greg and Grandma Millie, Brooke’s eye appointment last week went ok it was just a super long wait to get seen.

MSP Salisbury Barrack

During the month of February 2009, Troopers from Salisbury Barrack responded to 1340 calls for service which resulted in 30 criminal arrests and the apprehension of 43 subjects wanted on open/outstanding warrants. Additionally, Salisbury Troopers conducted 2104 traffic stops which resulted in the issuance of 1563 warnings, 1085 citations and 118 safety equipment repair orders as well as the arrests of 33 subjects for driving under the influence of alcohol. Over this same time period, Salisbury Troopers investigated 86 motor vehicle collisions without a fatality. The Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack is committed to reducing fatalities on our roadways and reminds the public to wear your safety belts and to use a designated driver when consuming alcoholic beverages.

Dear Ma and Pa,

I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. but I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.

Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water.

Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you til noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.

We go on "route marches," which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.

The country is nice but awful flat. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and Colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry.

Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

The Big Event
Saturday April 18th
This is a community service event where students get together and help out members of the community with work around their houses. Interest meetings begin this week on campus.

Colleges Against Cancer is sponsoring a photo contest themed around the
following statements: "Reasons I don't smoke" "Things I don instead of smoking" "My inspiration to quit" Students, Faculty, and Staff are encouraged to enter an original photograph for a chance to win.

On April 4th CAC will host a free concert in Red Square on campus where they will promote a smoke-free campus.

On Tues Feb 24th, SU hosted a job fair with over 80 employers. It was a huge success, so much that they may need to hold the event in a larger area! The summer Job Fair will be held on Tuesday March 10 from 2pm - 6pm for part-time work or internships. There will also be a Health Career Fair on Wednesday, March 11 from 11am - 4pm. Both will be held in the Guerreri University Center.

Also in the March 3rd edition of the SU Flyer Debbie Campbell wrote a letter to the Editor about re running for City Council and her views on the crime rate in Salisbury, the unsafe housing arrangements, and the ridiculous noise ordinance which doesn't include an objective standard (db level).

However, those of you in the first district of Salisbury might want to think before re-electing "Shanie" Shields. Ms. Shields, if you are reading this..I know what you said last summer [insert evil laugh.]

In any event, Ms. Sheilds was the first dishonoree on Maryland Politics Today's now infamous E-List for choice comments concerning homicides last June, that would probably make my county executive blush.

The Stuttering Cat

A teacher is explaining biology to her 4th grade students. 'Human beings are the only animals that stutter,' she says.

A little girl raises her hand. 'I had a kitty-cat who stuttered.'

The teacher, knowing how precious some of these stories could become, asked the girl to describe the incident.

'Well', she began, 'I was in the back yard with my kitty and the Rottweiler that
lives next door got a running start and before we knew it, he jumped over the fence into our yard!'

'That must've been scary,' said the teacher.

'It sure was,' said the little girl. 'My kitty raised her back, went Sssss, Sssss, Sssss' and before she could say 'Sh!t,' the Rottweiler ate her!

The teacher had to leave the room.
