Brooke Mulford Update

Heelllooo everybody!!! Its me Brookie the super hyper party girl. It has been a really long time since I have had time to sit still with Daddy and go over all my activities. I have been having play dates, Tea Cup parties, kids Mani/Pedi, Outside Movies, lots of walks, dancing and been an eating machine! Just last night I was the guest of honor at a pizza party at Grammy’s house. I just ran around and danced for hours. I went to bed at 11PM last night, I was just feeling so good and didn’t want it to end. I have a new dance I have come up with, its called my Cancer Dance. I stomp out Cancer and throw it away and end by saying Cancer Fears Me!

Before we left I also got to open all my cards and things people have presented to me along my journey the first 6 months. I am so grateful to everyone for keeping my spirits high and being by my side. At times there was so much stuff it was overwhelming and Mommy and Daddy wanted me to appreciate each card, letter, gifts, handmade items and just everything to keep me going on some days. I also had an afternoon at Market Street where both our local news stations were there and Mommy and Daddy spoke to everyone to tell them where we have been in this process and where we are now going. I was also presented with a check from Madison Taylor who sold a lot of doggie treats, Jenny Palmer and Cathy Marshall from the Beat the Beast team did the formal presentation of the check for my Neuroblastoma Research Fund. We also stated that over the past 6 months from the love and support from our local community, our communities where we used to live in NJ and all over the world from donations and fund raisers that between my Brooke Mulford United Way Account, my Gift Medical Account and my Neuroblastoma Research Fund around a $100,000.00 has been raised. This is so wonderful to help my family as we fight this cancer for at least another year with the Transplant procedures and then Antibody treatments, but at the same time raising money to help with research to fight Cancer that will benefit other people. Daddy has also been able to use Market Street to help many people so far as we are more aware of what truly is important in this world.

We all are in Philly right now at CHOP getting ready to begin the process for the Transplant. I am hooked up to fluids and waiting for my room that I will be spending the next 30 days in. I will be getting Chemo for the next 6 days, a day of recovery and then next Friday will be the day of Transplant. I then will be here for the next 3 to 4 weeks to recover. I then will come home for 6 weeks and if all tests are ok I will come back and do the process again. The clinical study I am in radominized me and I am eligible for 2 transplants. I will then have to stay at home until around next April as I recover and my body is able to fight off infection. I will then at some point begin Antibody treatments. I still have a very long road ahead of me, but I also have come a really long way. Well Daddy needs to get this posted so everyone knows what is going on with me. Over the next couple of days Daddy will be speaking to you, posting medical procedures and road maps, pictures, and what I have exactly done over the last 3 weeks and talking to you as well. I will also be chiming in to keep you all straight, you all know by now sometimes Daddy gets sidetracked. For now everybody, Brookie is back to fight this Cancer and BEAT THIS CANCER!!!

More Discussions On Downtown Plaza Area

When Urban Salisbury was having their final meeting, thinking they were no longer going to be around, "I" brought up the Disney Concept. I don't know where Brad Gillis became recognized for such, (he was in the same meeting) but I explained to everyone just how Disney created Disney Land and Disney World.

Allow me just a minute here to explain as I'm confident many of you were not aware of any of this.

You see, Walt Disney had a very creative mind. He came up with this idea of an entertainment theme park but because he didn't have the money to make it work, he went outside the box and created what some of us know as the largest Trade Show ever created, open 365 days a year and millions of visitors.

You see, when you go to Disney World, (as an example) did you ever notice the GE Carousel? Did you notice Chrysler, Ford, Westinghouse, Paramount, etc.? What Walt Disney did was, he went to all of these major manufacturers and said, I'm building this theme park where I'm going to bring you millions of visitors per year. You can buy these 8 acres and here's what I want you to build. I want a roller coaster ride here, (you pay for it) and this area here is where you'll build an exhibition center to market your products. Once each company got on board it was simple to get others.

What Walt Disney did was, he sold them on the fact that he'd only take 35% at the gate and they could all share the rest. Then he went to the state of California and then Florida and said, this is land you can't do anything with. You give me the land and in 20 years I'll bring you $20,000,000.00 worth of taxes. The states agreed and it was no longer a vision, it became an instant success.

I explained this to Urban Salisbury months ago and I stated this shouldn't have to cost the taxpayers a penny. If you have the right vision and tools, anyone could make it work. Mind you, that was the short version of what happened overall but you get the picture.

The Downtown Plaza could be built up just like Pleasure Island in Disney World. I personally feel it needs to be designed around entertainment. Bars, restaurants and then specialty shops along the way. You want an attractions destination to PULL from Ocean City. You want to be years ahead. Think of the draw during Bike Week, Pork in the Park and ALL of the other Hot Rod events and Ocean City Trade Shows.

My idea is to completely shut down the Plaza and even allow outdoor drinking. This way people can smoke a cigar or cigarette and simply open it at both ends. Provide transportation so the college students can have a way to and from and even a bus shuttle to Ocean City.

If you create a entertainment theme park there, there's no question in my mind, (even in the worst economy) it will do well. You have to think OUT OF THE BOX and make it work, just like Walt Disney. I see a fantastic future for property owners to do well on the sale of their properties in order to get out and the future value would be unthinkable!

So rather than coming up with a plan that looks real nice, why not do like I've been doing and create the MOTOR to the entire plan. Something in which you know will work. All they're providing right now is the frame and body but there's NO ENGINE! That's what I'm good at. Imagine a local Seacrets on the Downtown Plaza. Yeah, sure there's going to be some issues and problems. However, all of them can be worked out. You have a Parking Garage that could be FULL every single night and charge for parking. Well, anyway, it's a thought. Let's see where this takes us.

SALISBURY: REMEMBER THE "R/UDAT" PLAN FOR DOWNTOWN?

This was going to be the road to greatness, mapped by expert planners from all over the US; now almost 30 years later it’s worth a look-see now that Urban Salisbury has put forth yet another plan.

Here are some of the R/UDAT details – note the recommendation on page 26: "A site for the Wicomico County detention facility is suggested immediately next to the courthouse, on the north side of the building, located away from the street."

That didn’t happen but only because of a citizens’ lawsuit – and the County wound up paying a huge sum ($1 Million) in wasted architects fees and other costs before it decided to put the facility north of town. Lesson 1: planning by "experts" can be harmful to the public purse if blindly accepted as the gospel by the local officials.

Let's hope history does not repeat itself -- again (remember the more recent study that recommended opening the downtown plaza to traffic?).

U.S. Military Set To Intercept North Korean Ship

U.S. Military Set to Intercept North Korean Ship Suspected of Proliferating Missiles, Nukes

The U.S. military is planning to intercept a flagged North Korean ship suspected of proliferating weapons material in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution passed last Friday, FOX News has learned.

The USS John McCain, a navy destroyer, will intercept the ship Kang Nam as soon as it leaves the vicinity off the coast of China, according to a senior U.S. defense official. The order to inderdict has not been given yet, but the ship is getting into position.

The ship left a port in North Korea Wednesday and appears to be heading toward Singapore, according to a senior U.S. military source. The vessel, which the military has been tracking since its departure, could be carrying weaponry, missile parts or nuclear materials, a violation of U.N. Resolution 1874, which put sanctions in place against Pyongyang.

3 Years Ago Today

This was the scene 3 years ago today at the Salisbury Zoo. During a two week period I had found a dozen or so mauled animals at the Zoo and even confronted Ron Alessi at a Zoo Commission Meeting as to why nothing had been done about these caged animals being attacked by a Raccoon. Mr. Alessi was clueless as former Zoo Director Jim Rapp refused to inform anyone of the problem. When I told Mr. Alessi this was happening every single day, he was clearly very upset and angry.

When I left the Zoo Commission Meeting I walked over the the boardwalk on the river, looked down and found yet another one. Fortunately the Zoo has a new Director and I'm confident he wouldn't wait till a dozen of their animals were found mauled before he'd set a trap like Jim Rapp finally did.

It was no wonder why the Zoo wanted Joe Albero out of there so desperately.

The Urban Salisbury Master Plan

Urban Salisbury hosted a public meeting the other night allowing the public to see the package they have to offer, costing the taxpayers more than $5,000,000.00. Mind you, "some" of this money may come by way of Grants but either way that you look at it, it's still taxpayer money.

They went through their routine of a slide show presentation, (or whatever you call it now) and then opened the floor to questions and comments. I felt like Arnold Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter, Ohh, Ohh, Pick Me! They did.

I started off by asking, besides myself, are there any other property owners in the room? Palmer Gillis raised his hand. That was it, two KEY players in the room, because none of the other property owners had been invited. Yes, I know it was a public meeting but 2/3 of the property owners do not live in Salisbury.

I was not only concerned as to why Urban Salisbury is so afraid to bring in the key players, I felt without them they have absolutely NOTHING! I then stated that their presentation was very nice but I also felt they were missing the second largest factor in this whole package, ECONOMIC & DEVELOPMENT PLAN!

Without it, IMHO, their plan is putting lipstick on a pig. If they do not have key anchor shops committed to such a project, this package is simply a package to keep Urban Salisbury alive for several years in the hopes with a lot of luck they'll encourage someone to place their business there.

I'm sorry Folks but as a successful businessman, this is absolutely the wrong way to go about it. You must have commitments from others before you spend a dime. According to their plan, they could simply use the drawings they currently have to persuade companies and individuals to locate there with the promise that this is what will be done in the future.

Urban Salisbury says no, they have to do this first to bring people to the Downtown area. I completely disagree. Look, I'm getting close top 50 years old and I have opened, run and sold many businesses in my time, all of which were a financial success. Mr. Insley, (who did not attend the meeting after his speech on PAC 14) stated it's all about location, location, location.

In business, I want a Sales Person who can sell a product. I wouldn't need Sales People if my product was almost FREE and I gave everything away just to attract people to my business. That's what Urban Salisbury is doing. Then what's next. Will they get all this Grant money, put the lipstick on the pig and then come to property owners like myself and say, look, we provided the upgrades, now you must lower your rent in order to get people to bite!

This is what I mean by they're going about this A$$ Backwards. Everyone knows this is going to happen, so they need to be up front about it. This is a typical move by government organizations so they can always pass the blame of failure on someone else. I want to know everything right up front.

Then we move onto the key players, the property owners. To me, it seems everyone is upset that investors are sitting on their property in the hopes that they'll hit a home run one day when they sell it. Well, as things sit right now, I doubt anyone is going to hit any home runs. Nevertheless, local government wants to tell us what we can and can't do with our property.

While some wait for the Historical Society to make decisions on what can and can't be done to some buildings, IF the City wants to step i and buy the property owners out and then enforce what will be done there, so be it. However, the City wants to take absolutely NO RISK whatsoever and use Grant money to fund that lipstick.

I say, put the brakes on the entire project until the Economic & Development people come along and say, we like the concept, we're going to sell it to others and see if we can encourage some key anchor stores to commit to relocating there and in the mean time Urban Salisbury can meet with the KEY PLAYERS, (the property owners) and negotiate rent for commercial, residential and retail so everyone agrees across the board before the project moves forward.

In the mean time, if this isn't met, all they're doing is selling the public on how they have an idea to stay alive for a couple more years. There is NO OTHER REASON why Urban Salisbury would be welcoming the public into this whole thing, (when it's really none of their business) and selling people on a fluff package that absolutely will not work. The mere fact that they have refused to invite the property owners to a single meeting tells me they're using this to stay alive.

I like what this group has to offer this community, I understand they're on their last legs but I have to be completely honest and share my professional experience and wisdom. This will NOT work without selling it to the property owners first. That is, unless the Mayor and City Council want to pass legislation to tell us what we can and can't do down there, creating even more socialist living in America.

The Daily Times did an article on this yesterday which drew 2 comments. Let's see what this one brings. I want to add, your opinion is important. I think we'd all like to see the Downtown area shine. Let's hear your thoughts.

More Confusion And Concern With Wicomico County Employees

It has been reported that Mr. Kenny Lloyd who works for General Services was suspended w/o pay for two weeks recently but returned to work yesterday. We're told Mr. Lloyd was in charge of some bids for some air conditioning units for the Old Court House valued at $30,000.00 and signed a contract with an alleged friend without putting the project out for sealed bid.

Not only was he suspended for two weeks, after returning to work yesterday he is enjoying the day off today, (his Birthday) as well. This time he is being paid. I think they should have a new motto for Wicomico County.

"Wicomico County, the most forgiving County in America."

SPD Goes Over 22,000 Incidents For The Year So Far

I made a phone call to the Salisbury Police Department after getting a tip that they were about to go over 20,000 incidents already for 2009.
By the time I called I was informed the number was not accurate and I thought, I knew they couldn't have that many calls so far for the year. So I asked, do you start out at 001 each year. The Officer replied that they do. I said, so where do you stand right now. He replied, we're about to go over 22,000!!!!!
I don't care what anyone says, that's some serious numbers and we're only in June! All that being said, remember to roll down your window the next time you see an Officer and simply wave. They'll know you're saying hello and thank you and as you can clearly see they're more than busting their rear ends each and every day.

NEGATIVE PEOPLE

This is something to think about when negative people are doing their best to rain on your parade. So remember this story the next time someone who knows nothing and cares less tries to make your life miserable.

A woman was at her hairdresser's getting her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her husband.. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded: "Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded and dirty..

You're crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?"

"We're taking Continental," was the reply. "We got a great rate!"

"Continental?" exclaimed the hairdresser. "That's a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly, and they're always late.

So, where are you staying in Rome?"

"We'll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome's Tiber River called Teste."

"Don't go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks its gonna be Something special and exclusive, but it's really a dump."

"We're going to go to see the Vatican and maybe get to see the Pope."

"That's rich," laughed the hairdresser. You and a million other people trying to see him. He'll look the size of an ant.

Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You're going to need it."

A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome.

"It was wonderful," explained the woman, "not only were we on time in one of Continental's brand new planes, but it was overbooked, and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot.

And the hotel was great! They'd just finished a $5 million remodeling job, and now it's a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner's suite at no extra charge!"

"Well," muttered the hairdresser, "that's all well and good, but I know you didn't get to see the Pope."

"Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if I'd be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me. Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me."

"Oh, really! What'd he say?"

He said: "My God, who messed up your hair?"
