Obama Finds A Way To Ruin Thanksgiving

For some, Thanksgiving is difficult enough with abrasive relatives gobbling up your food without a scintilla of gratitude. Now President Obama comes along with a proposal that could cause turmoil in even the happiest of homes.

The president wants us to discuss politics, immigration reform and Obamacare at our holiday tables. Imagine the scene. One of your kids is home from college, having been indoctrinated by liberal-leaning professors with politics mired in the ’60s, and he or she begins lecturing Grandpa Joe or Aunt Marie about the necessity of visiting the Obamacare website (if they can get on) and buying health insurance.

Let the bickering begin!

The only thing worse than discussing politics at the dinner table is discussing religion there.

Pizza Hut Offers Job Back To Manager Allegedly Fired For Refusing To Open On Thanksgiving

The manager of an Indiana Pizza Hut has been offered his job back after claiming he was fired for refusing to open the restaurant on Thanksgiving.

Tony Rohr, who worked his way up from cook to manager at the restaurant, in Elkhart, Ind., over 10 years, said the company that owns the store dictated it be open for the holiday, and he refused.

"I said, 'Why can't we be the company that stands up and says we care about our employees and they can have the day off,?'" Rohr told WSBT 22. "Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only two days that they're closed in the whole year and they're the only two days that those people are guaranteed to have off to spend with their families.”

I Beg Your Pardon?

Every Thanksgiving, the President pardons one lucky turkey, and some governors do the same in their states. This year, however, at least one governor is changing that tradition, by sentencing one turkey to become a meal for the needy. Governor Mark Dayton of Minnsota will be sending his turkey to the St. Paul Salvation Army to bring Thanksgiving to hungry families. And, he inspired the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association to donate enough turkey to feed 12,500 people. Governor Dayton made his choice to highlight Congress cutting food stamps, and he said, "It's a cruel way to treat [hungry Americans] in the holiday season." While animal lovers may prefer that the turkeys get pardoned, it's nice to see an elected leader speaking out these harsh food stamp cuts, and doing something to help hungry families enjoy Thanksgiving.

Thank You, Hobby Lobby

Religious liberty is front and center on the nation’s Thanksgiving table. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. The family-owned craft store company is intrepidly challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare’s abortion coverage mandate. Hobby Lobby’s faithful owners deserve our thanks and praise as they defend freedom of conscience for all Americans.

The privately held retail chain’s story is the quintessential American Dream. Founder David Green started out making mini picture frames in his Oklahoma garage in 1970. He recruited his two sons, Mart and Steve, to pitch in at an early age. The family’s first establishment took up a tiny 300 square feet of retail space. Hobby Lobby now runs nearly 600 stores across the country, employs 13,000 people and topped $2 billion in sales in 2009.

The Greens’ Christian faith is at the heart of how they do business. They are dedicated to integrity and service for their customers and their employees. The debt-free company commits to “honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with biblical principles,” as well as “serving our employees and their families by establishing a work environment and company policies that build character, strengthen individuals and nurture families.”

Of Course Someone Trademarked “Thanksgivukkah” Before You Thought Of It

It’s not going to happen again ever in our lifetimes (or likely for thousands of years, for that matter) so the forward-thinking woman who trademarked the term “Thanksgivukkah” a year ago had better milk it for all it’s worth. And also yes, we know you’re sad you didn’t think to trademark it ourselves, considering that everyone seems to be talking about Hanukkah coinciding with turkey day this year.

Hanukkah officially kicks off Wednesday at sundown, which means plenty of Americans will have menorahs on their Thanksgiving tables come Thursday.

Harvesting Cranberries For Your Thanksgiving Sauce Is “Kind Of A Fun Job”

Perhaps you think cranberry sauce is somehow grown in a can and plops out just when you need it for Thanksgiving dinner. Or maybe some kind of berry fairy goes along picking cranberries from a bush and leaves them on the doorstep when it’s time to make the sauce. Only one of those things are true. Okay, neither is. Cranberries have a backstory and it doesn’t start in a can or on a bush.

We’re sure plenty of you do know that cranberries come from bogs, but for the rest of us, that’s where they lie in wait on their vines until what I will call cranberry fishermen come to harvest them.

Retailers Try To Win Over Employees Who Work This Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving barrier has been breached by retailers, and the previously untouchable holiday is now just another day on which to have a big sale. In an attempt to win over employees who may not be too thrilled about having to eat Thanksgiving dinner at noon so they can make it to work on time, some stores are providing perks to workers who sacrifice their Turkey Day in the name of doorbuster deals.

The L.A. Times reports that Walmart is giving 25% discounts on certain purchases to employees who work this Thanksgiving. More importantly, they will get an additional day’s pay equal to that worker’s average daily pay in the 12 previous weeks.

Meanwhile Toys R Us employees get to wear jeans and sneakers… because if you’re going to tear them away from their families, they might as well be comfy.

Kohl’s and the Gap Inc. trinity — Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic — will be doing vague, fun things for workers, which mostly seems to indicate that there will be snacks.

Thanksgiving Proclamation

President George Washington
City of New York, October 3, 1789

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

We have so much to be thankful for this year and are excited about the great opportunities we'll have in the coming year to protect the unborn!

So many pro-lifers in Maryland are standing up to be heard and joining forces to advocate for positive change.

We are looking forward to the upcoming legislative session starting in January 2014 where we anticipate seeing pro-life bills filed in both houses by our legislators.

Your Maryland Pro-Life Alliance has been working diligently to craft strong language for legislation that will enact real change in Annapolis to protect the unborn.

In the coming weeks we'll get you up-to-date on this legislation so that you are well-prepared for the upcoming session that will start just after the holidays.

So as we reflect this week on the many blessings we've enjoyed this past year, let's also consider the great responsibility we have to accomplish even more in 2014.

Thank you for all of the hard work and the activism you've done for Maryland Pro-Life Alliance this year--it is inspiring to see the building momentum for life in our state!

God bless and Happy Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving Menu: Overstuffed with Regulations

On the fourth Thursday of November, our attention naturally turns to food and football the Pilgrims who celebrated America’s first Thanksgiving. After great privation, a bountiful harvest inspired the Plymouth colony to lay a great feast.

That they survived is remarkable. After all, there was no Environmental Protection Agency to restrict the greenhouse gases escaping from all that burning wood. No Department of Labor to inspect the whipsaws, augers, and chisels employed in home construction. Nor was the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the ready to dole out subsidies and manage crop production.

But lo, anarchy there was not. The intrepid Pilgrims organized themselves (themselves!) to protect kin and hearth through the Mayflower Compact. Signed on November 11, 1620, the compact obligated its signatories to “solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony.”

What To Do With All That Turkey After Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving will come and go, but the food may linger. Leftovers are an inevitable fact of life in many households after the turkey has been carved and the mashed potatoes spooned into Tupperware.

In our throwaway society, where a sizable portion of our food is discarded into landfills each year, using up leftovers makes more and more sense. After all, lots of resources go into raising, growing and producing all the food that we cast aside.

If you have a bit of spare time this holiday weekend, you may be able to turn those leftovers into mouth-watering meals for the long weekend, and possibly beyond.

Pro-Morsi Egyptians to Picket Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC

A group of Egyptians sympathetic to former President Mohmamed Morsi are gearing up to stage a demonstration along the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route in New York City, according to organizers.

Several hundred activists are expected to show up to the march, which is being called “Rabaa on Thanksgiving in Manhattan.”

The name is a reference to Egypt’s Rabaa Square, where backers of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood gathered to protest the coup until being violently disbursed by the military in August.

Thanksgiving In The USA

Near the end of November in the USA
Is our national Thanksgiving Day.
We close stores, schools, and banks
And give to God our special thanks.

It is a time for us to celebrate
From coast to coast and state to state.
We think of when the Pilgrims came
To these shores in freedom's name.

The first Thanksgiving was long ago.
This bit of history we all know.
A time for thanking their God above
Was set aside to show their love.

When blessings came, they had a feast.
They were not sorry in the least
For coming to this vast, barren land.
For freedom to worship, they did stand.

From that first Thanksgiving Day
Until the present one we can say,
"Thank you, God, for blessings great!
You are the reason we celebrate!
