Surveillance powers set to lapse with no deal in Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Security Agency is losing its authority to collect Americans’ phone records in bulk, after GOP Sen. Rand Paul stood in the way of extending the fiercely contested program in an extraordinary Sunday Senate session.

But that program and several other post-Sept. 11 counter-terror measures look likely to be revived in a matter of days. With no other options, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, in an about-face, reluctantly embraced a House-passed bill that would extend the anti-terror provisions that expire Sunday at midnight, while also remaking the bulk phone collections program.

Although the lapse in the programs may be brief, intelligence officials warned that it could jeopardize Americans’ safety and amount to a win for terrorists. But civil liberties groups applauded as Paul, who is running for president, forced the expiration of the once-secret program made public by NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which critics say is an unconstitutional intrusion into Americans’ privacy.

The Senate voted 77-17 to move ahead on the House-passed bill, the USA Freedom Act, which only last weekend fell three shorts vote of the 60 needed to advance in the Senate. For McConnell, it was a remarkable retreat after objecting ferociously that the House bill would make the bulk phone collections program unwieldy by requiring the government to search records maintained by phone companies.

Frustrated Worcester Teachers Exercise ‘Work To Rule’ Over County Pay Decision

BERLIN – Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, there was hardly a car in the parking lot at Buckingham Elementary School. Aside from a custodian doing yard work, the typically bustling school was quiet.

It was just before children began making their appearance for the 8:30 a.m. school day start that teachers began to arrive. They huddled in the parking lot, talking in small groups, before joining together to walk into the building at 8:20 — less than five minutes before their charges began filing off school buses.

Though a subtle display to those unfamiliar with the school, it, along with a similar event at Stephen Decatur High School, marked the first time in recent memory local teachers have resorted to “work to rule.” By meeting just the minimum required by their contracts — putting in no more time than the actual school day hours — teachers are hoping to share their frustration over the salary increases Worcester County officials have cut from the coming year’s proposed budget.

Salisbury Police Officer Caught Texting And Driving

This image and information was put out on Facebook today. Here's what you need to know. Believe it or not, law enforcement is immune to the texting and talking on the phone while driving laws. We were told directly a few years ago that they are exempt because they allegedly go through special training for this issue.

That being said, it depends on the Police Department. For example, Sheriff Lewis absolutely discourages ANY of his Officers from doing so. I'm not sure where Chief Barbara Duncan stands on this matter but I'm confident through comments we'll learn very quickly her position on the matter.

Pictures don't lie but know this, Police Officer in Maryland are exempt from these laws.

The Pittsville Saga Continues

When you have a Council President allegedly not telling the truth, who can you trust and where is all the money?

It was reported today that Carla Moore was hired by another Town Employee. Our sources state, (flat out) "that's not true".

It is in the Charter, the Council President hires and fires. Carla Moore was hired by her father, sources say. She started off as a part time employee in the main office handling checks and cash while in High School. She was then hired on full time after she got graduated High School.

Law Enforcement and the States Attorneys Office need to dig deeper. Putting blame and responsibility on someone else, rather then facing the truth is poor leadership and it will certainly make people wonder what other false information has been stated.

The Council should immediately remove Denver Moore under the no confidence rule, at least until this matter is resolved.

PHOENIX BIKERS SPONSOR ‘DRAW MUHAMMAD’ CONTEST ON FRIDAY

On May 29, bikers in Pheonix, Arizona, are holding a “Draw Muhammad” contest outside the mosque at the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix, which is where the two gunmen who opened fire in Garland, Texas, allegedly attended.

Nadir Soofi and Elton Simpson drove from Phoenix to Garland and opened fire outside of the Curtis Culwell Center on May 3, while a Muhammad cartoon contest was being held. The two men were quickly killed by police working security at the event.

In the weeks since that event, numerous media pundits have criticized Pamela Geller for organizing the Muhammad cartoon contest to begin with. At what she described as her freedom of speech and expression, pundits recoiled and said she was asking for it by allegedly antagonizing Muslims.

Police Arrest A Homeless Man For Charging His Mobile Phone At A Public Park

Some say this story is ridiculous. Others say is a joke and cannot be happening in America today. But whatever your mind tells you about the story, we can only vouch that it is a true story and has happened in America today.

In January this year in the city of Sarasota-Florida, a homeless man was arrested by the police because he was charging his mobile phone at a public picnic shelter called the Gillespie Park in the city centre.

Police Sergeant- Anthony Frangioni made the arrest and Darren Kersey-the 28-year-old homeless man had to spend one night in jail simply because he used a public property. He was later charged with Utilities Theft and his bail bond was set at $500. Darren was arrested on Sunday that day.

6 Baltimore officers charged in Freddie Gray death seek to move trial

BALTIMORE —Attorneys for six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray are asking a judge to move their case out of Baltimore, arguing it will be impossible to select an impartial jury and receive a fair trial.

The officers face charges ranging from assault to second-degree "depraved-heart" murder.

Gray's death April 19 prompted a wave of protests that on two occasions gave way to violence, looting and arson. The U.S. Justice Department announced it's conducting an investigation of the city police department.

Pastor of Empowerment Temple Jamal Bryant Promises More Protests In Maryland

Pastor of Empowerment Temple Jamal Bryant shut down the major arteries into Baltimore city during morning traffic on Tuesday as a form of "civil disobedience," he stated on Maryland's News Now with Bryan Nehman.

Bryant and a few others walked along MLK and Washington Blvd to protest the governor's decision to fund the construction of a $30 million youth jail instead of funding Baltimore city public schools.

"Civil disobedience is always an inconvenience," he says. "It never comes without a challenge."

His target with these protests is Governor Hogan. Earlier this month, the Board of Public Works, which is chaired by the governor, approved the funding to build the 60-bed, $30 million juvenile detention center in Baltimore. At the same time, the governor refused to spend $68 million that lawmakers had set aside to fund Baltimore City and 12 other school systems.

Unrest will cost city $20 million, officials estimate

The recent rioting and unrest in Baltimore will cost the city an estimated $20 million, officials said Tuesday.

The expenses — which go before the city's spending board for approval Wednesday — include overtime for police and firefighters, damage to city-owned property and repaying other jurisdictions for police and other assistance.

Henry J. Raymond, Baltimore's finance director, said the city can temporarily cover the costs from its rainy day fund while seeking reimbursement for up to 75 percent from Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Should We Really Have Inexperienced Commissioners Determining Your Fate?

There's been a LOT of talk about the recent arrest of Carla Moore from Pittsville and the fact that she has been released on a $200,000.00 unsecured bond.

Many have asked who is responsible for this action, so I called to find out. I had stated from the beginning that the decision is made by a Commissioner and this morning I confirmed just that.

During my confirmation conversation I came to learn some things I'm confident even you didn't know. Did you know that the Commissioners in Wicomico County have absolutely NO legal background?

Here we have people making life changing decisions and the ONLY experience they have is a brief meeting in Annapolis. So a help wanted ad is run, (no qualifications) and someone answers the ad, (seriously) and they hire you. You go to Annapolis for a 15 minute meeting and you return as a Commissioner.

It's high time we remove these Commissioners and hire people who actually have a law degree as well as experience with the judicial system.

In my own personal experience I had been arrested on BOGUS charges from the Director of the Salisbury Zoo. Fortunately, (for me) I had a video recording of the entire experience. I had been arrested, (turned myself in) I owned more than a dozen properties in Wicomico County, (no flight risk) and I sat in front of one of these Commissioners where she said, Mr. Albero, why would you use the F Word in front of children at the Zoo? I replied, what are you talking about. She said, the Director of the Zoo states that you used the F Word in front of children at the Zoo. I replied, that's absolutely not true. She aggressively said, ARE YOU CALLING THE DIRECTOR OF THE SALISBURY ZOO A LIAR? I replied, ABSOLUTELY, and I can prove it. She got extremely upset with me and said, THAT WILL BE A $50,000.00 BOND. I replied, I didn't kill anybody. The Commissioner, (knowing my residence was in Delmar, DE. also put in there that I could NOT leave the state of Maryland.

The next morning I went to the states attorneys office with the video and PROVED the Director was a bold face liar. It turned out this Commissioner was a FRIEND of the Zoo Director and almost got fired for what she had done.

Now I could see IF I was a flight risk, had a long criminal history, a bond being set so high. In this case she was way out of line and it was more of a personal/political vendetta. In the case of Carla Moore, once again, show me all the properties she owns that absolutely tie her to not being a flight risk. Her Father is the president of the Town Commissioners, (Mayor) and that's enough for a free ride? NOTHING has been proven in this case, yet many are suggesting her Father may have somehow been involved. In time we'll see if that is the case but when a Grand Jury decides that there's a $170,000.00 theft, a bond is set at $200,000.00 and they are released on an unsecured bond, that is NOT protecting the interests of the very people who are victims of a theft.

In fact, in my honest opinion, it's a SLAP IN THE FACE to all Pittsville taxpayers. There's been an ongoing investigation on this matter for more than a year. The state has done their due diligence and charges were filed. A Grand Jury has rendered their decision based on those facts. It's high time our delegates, senators, congressmen and Governor eliminate these inexperienced Commissioners and hire professionals instead.

THE DECLINE OF CHRISTIAN AMERICA

Pat Buchanan: As faith dies, individualism, materialism and hedonism replace it

“This is a Christian nation,” said the Supreme Court in 1892.

“America was born a Christian nation,” echoed Woodrow Wilson. Harry Truman affirmed it: “This is a Christian nation.”

But in 2009, Barack Hussein Obama begged to differ: “We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation.”

Comes now a Pew Research Center survey that reveals the United States is de-Christianizing at an accelerated rate.

Whereas 86 percent of Americans in 1990 identified as Christians, by 2007, that was down to 78 percent. Today only 7 in 10 say they are Christians. But the percentage of those describing themselves as atheists, agnostics or nonbelievers has risen to 23. That exceeds the Catholic population and is only slightly below evangelicals.

Those in the mainline Protestant churches – Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, Episcopalians – have plummeted from 50 percent of the U.S. population in 1958 to 14 percent today. By accommodating the social revolution of the 1960s to stay relevant, mainline churches appear to have made themselves irrelevant to America’s young.

Protesters Block Highway Ramp In Baltimore During Morning Traffic

Protesters blocked morning traffic northbound and southbound I-95 to 395 ramp in opposition to a new youth detention center.

Maryland Transportation Authority spokesman Tamory Winfield says Interstate 395 from I-95 into the city was closed just before 9 a.m. Tuesday for about 45 minutes, leading to delays on I-95.

Tweets from Rev. Jamal Bryant show the protest is related to a new juvenile jail to be built in the city. The state approved the plans to build the $30 million, 60-bed jail on May 13th, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Protesters believe the money should be spent on education instead of the facility.

Dear Joe,

Something happen to my husband and myself over the weekend that is really sad. I do own a handicapped tag which I need. My husband let me off at the door of a local big box store to get in and sit down while he parked the vehicle. We finished our business and returned to our vehicle to find an envelope with a business card enclosed which was a HATE FILLED RANT from a very disturbed person who had indicated they had witnessed my husband parking and that he didn't have a disability. Isn't it sad that people have no peace in their own life and feel that they must strike out at everyone even if they don't know the facts of the situation. To the person who left the envelope.....I am so sorry for you that you are not able to walk well and obviously have no empathy for others. Please get some help for yourself and find your peace....you will feel better in the end.

27.7%: Percentage of Obese Americans At Its Highest Level

Obesity hits all time high as leftists encourage unhealthy lifestyle

The incidence of American obesity hit its highest point ever last year, 27.7% of the population, according to Gallup’s report on Obesity Rankings released on Wednesday.

“Nationally, the incidence of obesity is at its highest level, rising to 27.7% in 2014, up from 27.1% in 2013 and significantly above the 25.5% recorded in 2008,” reported the survey.

The survey is the third in Gallup’s annual Well-Being Index, though Gallup has been tracking obesity rates since 2008.

The figure was calculated by asking 2.2 million Americans to self-report their height and weight, from which Gallup calculated their Body Mass Index (BMI). Individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher are classified as obese.

Massive Numbers Of Chinese Students Expelled From US Schools

An estimated 8,000 Chinese students studying in America were expelled last year for cheating or for extremely poor academic performance, a survey by a company catering to Chinese students has found.

The report was put together by WholeRen Education, which served the Chinese market, and was originally written in Chinese. It was translated by The Wall Street Journal’s China Real Time blog, which noticed the big expulsion figure. Of the approximately 8,000 expulsions, more than 80 percent were due to poor academic performance or cheating.

According to the International Institute of Education, there were 274,439 Chinese students attending U.S. universities in the 2013-14 school year, representing about one-third of all foreign college students. The figure of 8,000 expulsions suggests that almost 3 percent of Chinese students are being expelled in a given year. That number isn’t extreme, but it’s notable, especially since Chinese students studying abroad are supposed to be high achievers. More than half of those expelled were attending top 100 institutions in the U.S., an average of 40 students per school in a single year.

Baltimore Has Descended Into A State Of Lawlessness – And More Cities Will Soon Follow

Did you really think that Baltimore would return to normal after everything that has happened?

Did you really think that Baltimore would return to normal after everything that has happened? On Thursday, a mother and her 7-year-old son were both shot in the head in a double murder that has shocked the entire nation. Police believe that the son may have been shot in order to prevent him from identifying the individual that shot his mother. So is this what America is turning into? A place where 7-year-old kids are executed in cold blood? That mother and son were the 37th and 38th murder victims in the city of Baltimore so far this month. That makes this the deadliest month in Baltimore in 15 years, but because of all the controversy surrounding the death of Freddie Gray, police in Baltimore are afraid to do their jobs at this point. In some areas of the city, young men boldly smoke weed in public and wave guns around at innocent bystanders without any worry that police will intervene. Baltimore has descended into a state of lawlessness, and this is just the beginning. As I discussed just the other day, the same kind of lawlessness will soon sweep all across this country.

Have you ever been afraid to step outside of your own home? That is what day to day life is like for many residents of Baltimore right now. In fact, one woman is even barricading her door and setting up metal slabs behind her windows to deflect gunfire. Just check out the following excerpt from a recent news report about what is going on in the city

Ocean City Prepared For ‘College Beach Week’ Event, Typical June Activities

OCEAN CITY — For several months, Ocean City public safety officials have been getting out in front of a planned beach week event next weekend that has a troubled past including discussions with the event promoter and bringing in extra law enforcement resources.

Local businesses officially learned of the planned “College Beach Week” event in early May when Ocean City Communications Director Jessica Waters and Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association (OCHMRA) Executive Director Susan Jones sent a letter to members alerting them of the city’s approach to the event and June in general.

“In an effort to keep communications open, we are reaching out regarding the month of June. Returning the weekend of June 5-7, 2015 will be College Beach Week. The Town of Ocean City has taken a proactive approach and met with the event organizer. They have communicated to them, as well as other groups, that they are welcome as long as they obey the same rules everyone else is expected to obey,” the letter reads. “Rest assured, there is a coordinated effort among surrounding agencies to maintain peace and order throughout June.”

Israel, US Discussing New Security Aid Package

Israel is in early discussions with the US about a new 10-year defense assistance program, but this is not “compensation” for the possible signing of a possible nuclear deal with Iran, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday.

Netanyahu, during a briefing with Israel’s diplomatic correspondents, did not say how much Israel was requesting. With the current 10-year, $30 billion US defense assistance agreement set to expire in 2017, the two sides are negotiating the terms of a 10-year deal that according to a recent report in Defense News could be worth up to $45b.

The prime minister said this package is not a “quid pro quo” for the Iranian nuclear deal, which he said Israel continues to adamantly oppose.

The previous defense assistance memorandum of understanding was signed in August 2007 with the Bush administration, and outlined a 10-year framework of military assistance that called for incremental yearly increases that reached $3.1b. this year. Of that money, 74¢ of every dollar is spent in the US.

According to the Defense News report, this does not include US war stocks prepositioned in Israel and available for Israel’s emergency use, and nearly $500m. annually in money for joint research and development of rocket defense systems, like Iron Dome.

“Sir Elton John and his ‘wife’ David Furnish have entered on the birth certificate of their two sons that David Furnish is the mother. I’m sorry. That will give you an idea of how the concept of motherhood has emptied out. It’s gone, it’s been deconstructed.”

Pope: I Didn't Call Abbas 'Angel of Peace'

Pope Francis denied Thursday that he had called Palestinian Authority (PA) Head Mahmoud Abbas “an angel of peace” when the two met a fortnight ago.

The pope told Israeli reporter Henrique Cymerman and his longtime friend Rabbi Avraham Skorka, that he only told Abbas – in Italian – that he believes he could still become an angel of peace in the future.

In an email message to the two, the pope added that “whoever does not accept the Jewish people and does not accept the State of Israel, which has a right to exist, is displaying anti-Semitism.”

A few days after the meeting with Abbas, the Vatican said that Pope Francis's reference to Abbas as "an angel of peace" was meant as encouragement for him to pursue peace with Israel.

48 criminal aliens arrested by ICE Philadelphia in enforcement operation

PHILADELPHIA — Four dozen criminal aliens living in Pennsylvania and Delaware were arrested during a five-day enforcement operation. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Philadelphia took the 48 aliens into custody who are all a priority for removal from the United States.
“These aliens were menaces to society and committed a multitude of crimes,” said Tom Decker, ERO Philadelphia field office director. “By taking these individuals off our streets and removing them from the country, we are making our communities safer for everyone.”
Dozens of ERO officers participated in the operation from May 17 to 21 that focused on the arrests of public safety threats. Those arrested are from all over the world and have a wide-array of criminal convictions – many have committed multiple offenses.

Of the total 48 criminals arrested, one was a gang member, 10 were aggravated felons, and six were sex offenders. The vast majority of misdemeanor convictions were driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. ICE considers DUI offenders, particularly repeat offenders, to be a significant public safety threat.

Sens. Cruz and Lee: Expand School Choice For Low-Income Parents

(CNSNews) -- As Congress considers reauthorization of the bipartisan No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), U.S. Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) want to expand school choice by allowing low-income parents the opportunity to send their children to any public or private school of their choice.

Their bill, entitled the Enhancing Educational Opportunities for All Students Act (S.306), which was introduced in the Senate on January 29, calls for a three-fold reform of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) which was passed in 1965 and reauthorized as NCLB in 2002.

“All students should have access to a high quality education. This legislation will empower parents to invest more in their child's education and allow parents to choose what school best meets their child's needs,” Lee stated.

Sen. Cruz concurred. “The rich and middle class have had school choice from the beginning of time,” he said. “This fight is about ensuring that every child, regardless of race, ethnicity, or zip code has the same opportunity to choose the school that best fits their needs and will help them achieve their very best.”

According to Senator Lee’s website, the first provision of the bill would allow federal Title I funds to follow low-income students to any public or private school of their choice. In 2015, the federal poverty guideline is $20,090 for a family of three.

Fiorina: Federal Seniority Lets A Man Watch Pornography and Get Same Pay As Woman Working Next to Him

(CNSNews) - "Do you support equal pay for women?" NBC's Andrea Mitchell asked Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina on Wednesday, the same day Hillary Clinton campaigned in South Carolina on a promise of "equal pay."

"Of course I support equal pay for equal work," Fiorina replied. "And that's why in 1963, when a law was passed guaranteeing that if a woman is being discriminated against in the work force purely because of her gender, she should take every advantage of the law.

"But I also know this -- a seniority system, which exists in the federal government, that allows a man to watch pornography all day long in the federal government and earn the same pay, pension, and benefits as a woman sitting next to him trying to do a good job, that is not equal pay for equal work. And the seniority system, and the federal government that promotes that seniority system, and the unions as well, they're not willing to talk about that.

"So before a federal government or Hillary Clinton, who by her own measures is not paying women equally in her own office, nor is President Obama, before they lecture others, maybe they ought to look into their own offices or look into the seniority system in the federal government."

Ann Coulter's War

This week, iconoclastic master Ann Coulter released her new book, "Adios, America!"

The book has already been labeled racist by the mainstream left, which fears her argument, and will undoubtedly be marginalized by the mainstream right, which doesn't want to hear it.

Coulter's thesis is simple: Since Senator Teddy Kennedy, D-Mass., rammed through the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, America's immigration system has transformed from a device for enriching the nation for both native-born and immigrants into a scheme for importing anti-American voters.

What made America America, Coulter argues, was a particular blend of Protestant religion and European civilization that led to the rise of the greatest nation in human history. What will unmake America, she continues, is a deliberate attempt to poison that blend with a flood of immigrants with wildly different values.

Coulter points out that the real number of immigrants currently residing in America illegally far surpasses the 11 million consistently put forth by politicians and media. That 11 million springs from census data, which is notoriously unreliable, given that immigrants here illegally typically don't spend time answering government surveys. The real number, she argues, is far closer to 30 million. And those 30 million immigrants in America illegally drive down wages, shred social safety nets, drive up the crime rate and congeal the American melting pot into a melange of inferior cultural values competing for local dominance.

"The foreign poor are prime Democratic constituents because they're easily demagogued into tribal voting," Coulter points out. "Race loyalty trumps the melting pot. ... The American electorate isn't moving left — it's shrinking. Democrats figured out they'd never win with Americans, so they implemented an evil, genius plan to change this country by restocking it with voters more favorably disposed to left-wing policies than Americans ever would be."

Bruton rule could affect Freddie Gray case

BALTIMORE —Defense lawyers for six Baltimore police officers charged in the Freddie Gray case are trying to move the case out of Baltimore, a request that might also indicate how they try to defend their clients.

One big question moving forward is whether the officers will be tried together or separately. One defense strategy suggests that if the officers agree not to testify against each other, the case will fall apart.

"It is the prosecution that will want a consolidated trial. They want one trial for six people. It is for the convenience of witnesses, it's for the convenience of jurors, it's much less expensive to do it one time," said Doug Colbert, a University of Maryland School of Law professor.

Some legal experts believe that the defense might use a 1968 Supreme Court decision to keep pretrial statements by the defendants from being used in the case.

Limbaugh: American Left Has Made Christianity Its No. 1 Enemy

Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show on Wednesday that the American Left has made Christianity its "number one enemy." Limbaugh made the observation and explained it after playing an interview of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) by David Brody of CBN. In that interview Rubio suggested that mainstream Christian teaching was under assault from the left.

“You think Rubio's got a point there?" asked Rush. "You better not sweep this one away. You better not think this one was a little over the top. He is right on the money. This is exact. In fact, I would even go further. I think mainstream Christianity is the target, and has been for I can’t tell you how long. And before I was born, it's been, Christianity has been the biggest enemy of the American left, or any left – organized religion in general – but Christianity is the number one enemy of these people.”

“You notice, they’ve made friends with militant Islam,” Rush went on. “The left will not stand for any criticism of Islam, right? You start drawing cartoons of the prophet, they’re the first to jump on your case, right? Democrats and the left, they're out condemning any criticism of Islam."

“They’ve sided up, why?” asks Rush. “Well, Islam has an enemy. In their mind, their enemy is Christianity. So there’s a commonality there. And I don’t care. Folks, maybe this is just another one of those things you’re just not supposed to say, but I’m sorry. It’s undeniable.”

“Okay. Okay. Tell me I’m wrong,” urges Rush, “when I say that the left has formed an accord with Islam. Tell me I’m wrong.”

"Militant Islam says you can't draw pictures of the prophet," says Rush. "Democrat Party, you can't draw pictures of the prophet. You can't criticize Islam. And they go out of their way not to. We can't call them terrorists. You know the drill."

As More Muslim Refugees Arrive, Costly Efforts and Backlash Grow

In response to a report that cities and states are pushing back against the federal government's refugee resettlement program, partly due to the increase in Muslim refugees, the Obama administration is spending money on educating the public on being more welcoming to them.

Millions of dollars in grants have been given to organizations such as Welcoming America, which was started in 2010 with money from George Soros' Open Society Foundations, World Net Daily reported.

The group says that it works to "educate" elected officials and Americans on being welcoming to refugees who come to the United States.

This move comes after a report published in 2013 by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), an organization that works as a government resettlement contractor, which cited "a notable rise in state and local anti-refugee sentiment and activity across the country."

Traditionally, American cities have welcomed resettled refugees into their communities, the report said. After the 1980 Refugee Act was passed, refugees who came from the United States were primarily those who were fleeing communism and other similar oppressive situations.

While HIAS cited several factors that have contributed to the growing resistance to accepting refugees, such as budget shortfalls, one major factor is "the fact that many refugees resettled today are Muslims."

"In a comprehensive study on the American Muslim community that explores and documents how Muslims are integrating into U.S. society in over 75 cities across the United States, researchers found that 'one of the most important factors for many Americans in judging their Muslim neighbors ... is the idea that Muslims will not be loyal to America when push comes to shove and value Islamic law over the law of America," the HIAS report said.

Science Journal Retracts Gay Marriage Study Amid Fraud Allegations

A prestigious science journal has retracted a published study that found opponents of same-sex marriage could have their opinions changed by a brief encounter with a gay canvasser, because the journal and one of the study's co-authors allege the study's data was faked, Retraction Watch reports.

The study, "When contact changes minds: An experiment on transmission of support for gay equality," was done by UCLA graduate student and PhD candidate Michael LaCour, with the sponsorship backup of highly respected Columbia University political science professor Donald Green. Green said LaCour had admitted falsifying some of the data and the source of financing for the study.

Green wrote to Science, "I am deeply embarrassed by this turn of events and apologize to the editors, reviewers, and readers of Science," in a letter requesting the retraction, Retraction Watch reports.

LaCour told Politico he was "gathering evidence and relevant information so I can provide a single comprehensive response. I will do so at my earliest opportunity."

LaCour's work was done in cooperation with the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

The problems with LaCour's study came to light when Joshua Kalla, a PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, and others tried to extend the study's methods to a study of transgender equality in Florida, the New York Times reported, and could not replicate his results.

Women of all ages more likely to have serious mental health problems than men, report says

Women in every age group in the United States were more likely than men to have serious mental health problems, according to federal health statistics released Thursday.

The report from the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also found that more than one-fourth of people age 65 or older who are afflicted with these mental health problems have difficulty feeding, bathing and dressing themselves.

People with serious psychological distress are also at greater risk for certain medical conditions: four times as likely to have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) as men and women without mental health problem and twice as likely to have heart disease or diabetes.

Black Leaders: Common Core 'Inherently Racist'

Among the long list of complaints Americans have leveled against Common Core is the charge that the controversial federal standards will disproportionately harm racial minority students. This charge comes not from Al Sharpton, but from at least two prominent black conservatives.

“Minority children are going to be hurt first and foremost by Common Core because they are stuck in the public schools, which are government schools,” Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson told WND.

“And even as adults, it will keep them in a state of helplessness and hopelessness because Common Core is going to dumb them down. [It] is going to make them feel that America is totally against them and that white people are holding them back. And they’re going to feel unprepared as adults to deal with life because they’re not going to be properly educated, that’s for sure.”

Peterson, a WND columnist and founder and president of The Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, was referring to the fact that racial minorities are more likely than whites to be poor, thus many of them can’t pay their way into private schools that don’t use Common Core. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 27 percent of blacks and 24 percent of Hispanics lived in poverty in 2013, versus only 10 percent of whites.

Alveda King, a civil rights activist and niece of Martin Luther King Jr., shares Peterson’s worry. On May 22, King penned an open letter to the Alabama Legislature calling on the body to abandon what she called the “one size fits all Common Core curriculum.”

In the letter, King quoted a statement from the Chicago Teachers Union that read in part: “We also know that high-stakes standardized testing is designed to rank and sort our children and it contributes significantly to racial discrimination and the achievement gap among students in America’s schools.”

King then followed up: “This sorting of students in Alabama based on the color of their skin or their parents’ income and the setting of lower achievement goals for African Americans than Caucasians has been widely reported. If teachers are told to expect less from minorities, they are likely to get less.”

Rip currents still danger to all swimmers

With last year being one of the worst in Ocean City for rip currents, the Ocean City Beach Patrol is again reminding people to be aware of their dangers, since they can sweep away even the strongest swimmers.

Last year was one of the deadliest on record in Ocean City: five swimmers died following struggles in rip currents and a sixth died of a broken neck.

Before last year, Ocean City had not reported a death while lifeguards were on duty since 2007.

Rip currents are not just the undertow created by surf rushing in and surf rushing out. While that is part of it, other elements are involved.

Feds who use pot could see jobs go up in smoke, says OPM

Feds indulging in marijuana – even in places where it's legal, such as Washington, D.C. – could lose their jobs if they're caught, said the Office of Personnel Management in a May 26 memo.

In the memo, OPM Director Katherine Archuleta said changes to state and D.C. laws have led some to question whether federal employees in those jurisdictions may use marijuana. But the government's top human resource official was quick to respond.

"Federal law on marijuana remains unchanged," Archuleta wrote in the memo. "Intentional marijuana possession is illegal, even if an individual has no intent to manufacture, distribute or dispense marijuana."

A 1986 executive order that's still in effect goes so far as to say that people who "use illegal drugs are not suitable for federal employment."

"The use of illegal drugs by Federal employees, whether on or off duty, is contrary to the efficiency of the service," the order, signed by President Reagan says.

There is some leniency, though. The order emphasizes that feds who are caught using drugs should not be fired if the employee voluntarily seeks counseling or rehabilitation and thereafter refrains from using illegal drugs.

MD STATE POLICE HELICOPTER PERFORMS HOIST RESCUE IN WICOMICO CO.

On Friday May 29, 2015 at 11:20am, the Wicomico County 911 center received a call for a person experiencing a heat related medical emergency in the area of Muddy Hole Road & Trinity Church Road, Tyaskin, MD. Upon arrival rescue crews had to trek across nearly 300 yards of marshland before reaching the victim. Crews discovered a 69 year old male victim experiencing heat exhaustion and in need of hospitalization. Due to the victim’s location and condition, a hoist extraction was considered more expeditious and beneficial to the patient.

The Maryland State Police Aviation Command’s “Easton Section - Trooper 6” was dispatched for the hoist mission. The helicopter crew consisted of Pilot in Command: Mr. Brian Martin, Second in Command: Mr. David Eldredge, Crew Chief/Flight Paramedic: Corporal Brian Francis and Rescue Technician: Trooper Tyler Brice. After establishing communications with Wicomico County 911 and the rescuers on the scene; an aerial evaluation of the terrain and situation was conducted. Utilization of the AgustaWestland AW-139’s Goodrich hoist and deployment of the rescue technician into the marsh was deemed necessary for immediate patient extraction.

Once inserted on the ground the rescue technician assessed the victim and packaged the patient to ensure a safe extraction. Once the victim and rescue technician were safely secured inside of the helicopter, the crew of Trooper 6 continued medical treatment while transporting the heat exhausted patient to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD for further evaluation and treatment.

This search and rescue incident highlights the team work that occurs daily by Maryland’s emergency medical care system. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has served Maryland citizens since 1970 and operates a fleet of ten helicopters from seven bases throughout Maryland on a 24/7/365 basis. Missions include medevac, law enforcement, search & rescue, homeland security, and disaster assessment. The success of rescues performed by the Aviation Command depends a great deal on the cooperative effort of local fire, rescue, EMS, and law enforcement agencies.

U.S. PUSHBACK AGAINST MUSLIM REFUGEES 'GROWING'

Government contractor offers advice on how to quash dissent

WND has discovered what amounts to the government playbook for countering the rising “backlash” against the secret planting of Muslim refugees into cities and towns across America.

The 2013 report anticipated two years ago that resistance would increase to the seeding of communities with Muslim refugees if counter measures were not undertaken.

The report was prophetic.

Last year, WND reported how the mayor of Athens, Georgia, requested the federal government not send any refugees to her town until she could get a handle on the costs. Earlier this year, another high-profile case of pushback emerged in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in Rep. Trey Gowdy’s district, a story WND first reported in April.

In Wyoming, the only state that does not have a refugee resettlement agreement with the U.S. State Department, Gov. Matt Mead was “exploring” whether he should start such a program. But after stories in the local media and on WND, Mead dropped the plan.

'Lucy' may not be our mum, say scientists

In 1974, anthropologists in Ethiopia found the astonishing fossilised remains of a human-like creature who last walked the planet some 3.2 million years ago.

Was "Lucy," as the hominid was called, the direct ancestor of Homo sapiens? Was she "The Mother of Mankind," as some headlines claimed?

Over the years, the dramatic assertion has come under attack by doubters, who point to ancient yet inconclusive finds in Kenya and Chad.

But a new fossil, reported on Wednesday, may have dealt Lucy's claimed status an irreversible blow.

French barman guilty over 56 shots that killed customer

A French barman has been convicted of manslaughter and given a suspended sentence after allowing a customer to drink 56 shots that led to his death.

Renaud Prudhomme, 56, was at the bar with his daughter and friends when he attempted to break its shots record.

Mr Prudhomme was helped home but later taken to hospital, where he died the following day.

Barman Gilles Crepin, 47, admitted he encouraged Mr Prudhomme by displaying the shots record on a noticeboard.

Mr Crepin was given a four-month suspended sentence and banned from working in a bar for a year.

His lawyer, Renaud Portejoie, said he would appeal against the decision.

"It's a decision guided by emotion and the unconscious desire to set an example," said Mr Portejoie,

He told the court that Mr Prudhomme had existing respiratory and alcohol abuse problems.

Photo shows Chicago cops posing over black man with antlers

CHICAGO — A former Chicago police detective is suing to get his job back after being fired for posing in a photograph with another officer holding rifles over an unidentified black man lying on a floor and wearing deer antlers.

The photograph, which is believed to have been taken between 1999 and 2003, recently was made public after detective Timothy McDermott filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court seeking to rejoin the Chicago Police Department. The photo was discovered during an FBI investigation into police wrongdoing.

The Chicago Police Board fired McDermott in October after finding him guilty of bringing discredit on the department by taking part in the photo, disrespecting or maltreating a person on or off duty, and unlawful or unnecessary use or display of a weapon.

McDermott's lawyer, Dan Herbert, said Wednesday the photograph doesn't tell the entire story. He added there's no evidence the black man was in custody and questioned whether the photo was taken against the man's will.

McDermott posed with Officer Jerome Finnigan, who is serving a 12-year prison sentence for corruption. Both McDermott and Finnigan are white.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 5-30-15

The Movies

How many of us have not grown up with the movies? There probably isn’t anyone that hasn’t been affected by what they have seen on the silver screen. I grew up on black and white cowboy movies at the Ulman Theater. I can still watch an old western on TV and be immediately transported back in time to those days of my youth. I have gained a healthy respect for the movies that preceded the movies that I actually attended. The channel on TV that shows nothing but old movies gives one a nostalgic trip that can’t be found any other place. How many of you can watch an old Shirley Temple movie without getting a joyful tear in your eye? About 20 years ago, they started tampering with the old black and white movies by “colorizing” them. It seems that the majority of people felt as I did. The old movies lost something in the process. Old movies should be shown in black and white. The colorizing idea was dropped.

America’s love affair with the movies started in 1915. Most of the early movies were shown at arcades that were built for live entertainment. Until 1927, they were without sound. The dialogue was shown on the screen right under the picture. I have never been a big fan of silent movies, but I watch a bit of one every now and then just to remind me why. When “talkies” made the scene in 1927, movies became the main entertainment in America for the average man. During the Great Depression, movies provided a great chance to escape the drudgery of everyday life and experience adventure that would never be available to them in any other way. The movies of the 1930’s are the best. They had a good story line and no artificial props. Anyone that has seen one of the movies from the Thin Man series with William Powell and Myrna Loy has to admit that it is great entertainment.

I mostly prefer the movies that feature James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, or Humphrey Bogart. They are guaranteed action and a good story. Of course, you can be jaded by believing in the movies too much. In the movies, the good guy always wins, and that is not always the case in real life. I guess that is why we like the movies so much. We usually knew who the good guy was, and the excitement was in following his or her adventures to the gripping conclusion where they came out on top. The emotional roller-coaster ride made it all worthwhile when the hero triumphed in the end.

There were movies that the studios realized were better money-makers than others, and they produced other features with the same characters. People seemed to enjoy the familiarization with the characters and followed the sequence of films as religiously as some people follow their TV shows of today. In fact, the movie studios have made sequels of many of the more popular films. Movies have followed the many advances in technology, but I can’t imagine seeing the Thin Man in color. If you want that, try a James Bond movie.

Two More Ocean City Hotel Projects Gain Approval

OCEAN CITY – Site plans for two more brand-name hotels within two miles of each other in Ocean City were approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission last week.

The first will be the final phase of the redevelopment at the 45thStreet On The Bay, formerly known as 45th Street Village. A five-story, 120-room hotel to include a small retail area and outdoor dining will be built where the last row of the former village stands on the southernmost side of the property.

The hotel will be set back from Coastal Hwy. by at least 60 feet, which will serve as additional parking. There will also be parking provided under the building.

The commission discussed the number of discounted parking spaces, as the 45th Street development has grown into a mixed-use project with the existing retail and restaurant and now plans for the hotel. With the addition of the hotel parking, the site plan meets parking requirements with a total of 321 spaces.

Police dog fends off 3 assailants attacking Mississippi deputy

Authorities in Mississippi say Lucas, a black Belgian Malinois police dog, likely saved the life of Deputy Todd Frazier after he was ambushed by three suspects on Monday.

Sheriff Ricky Adam of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department said that while driving on a remote stretch of Highway 90 in Pearlington, Frazier saw a car at a deserted rest stop. He decided to pull over to check on the driver, and after he got out of his vehicle "two individuals surprised Deputy Frazier from the shadows and an altercation ensued," Adam told ABC News. "One cut him across the forehead with a razor, one choked him, and one grabbed his legs to carry him to the edge of the woods."

Frazier was able to hit a button that released Lucas from the car, and he bit the attackers, even remaining attached to the leg of one as they tried to drive away. Lucas chipped a few teeth and has a bruised shoulder, while Frazier has a gash on his forehead, but both are recovering. "Deputy Frazier is a good deputy and takes his job seriously," Adam said. "He is also an excellent dog handler — he trained Lucas himself." The suspects are still at large, and authorities say they don't have a motive for the attack. Catherine Garcia
