The 2010 Maryland Liberty Scorecard Is OUT!

Just in time for the 2010 general election, the 2010 Maryland Liberty Scorecard is out.  Before you vote, see how your legislators voted on key issues that affect our individual and corporate liberty.

If you’re from the Eastern Shore, chances are you’re pretty well represented.  Delegates like Mike Smigiel (R-36), Addie Eckardt (R-37B), and Jeannie Haddaway (R-37B) are all stars when it comes to supporting liberty; ditto senators EJ Pipkin, Rich Colburn and Lowell Stoltzfus.  Sadly, those of us on the Lower Shore don’t fair quite as well.  With Sen. Lowell Stoltzfus (R-38) retiring, the liberty record of delegates Jim Mathias (D-38B) and Norm Conway (D-38B) are cause for worry.  Del. Rudy Cane (D-37A) is no champion of liberty but has a better record than either Conway or Mathias.

Fortunately, the election is just around the corner.  In addition to re-electing great legislators like Sen. Alex Mooney (R-3), Sen. EJ Pipkin (R-36), Sen. Richard Colburn (R-37), along with Smigiel, Eckardt, and Haddaway, we have a chance to elect great people like Michael James in 38, Mike McDermott and Marty Pusey in 38-B, Dustin Mills in 37-A, Justin Ready in 5-A, Chris Shank in 2, and a host of others.

For those of us who want Maryland to once again be the FREE STATE, this election is crucial!  Check out BOTH the 2010 Liberty Scorecard as well as the 2009 Liberty Scorecard.  Know who you are voting for!

Early Voting Numbers Are In & Republicans Are Ahead

If your in the 1st District, (which we are) according to the early voting republican turn out, Democrats have a LOT to worry about. Especially Kratovil.

Two years ago when Obama was in the running and democrats were riding the wave, it was one thing. Clearly, (according to these numbers) the numbers have completely flipped and the republican turn out is much greater than democrats.

IF the trend from early voting is similar to the general numbers, republicans will absolutely own the general election.

IF early voting numbers follow the same kind of trend as the absentee ballots, say goodbye Mr. Kratovil.

If you're a Republican, do NOT think for a second this secures the seats for each republican candidate. GET OUT AND VOTE ON TUESDAY. Show the democrats how to really ride a wave.

O’DONNELL CUTS COONS’ EDGE

In the past two weeks, Republican Christine O’Donnell has narrowed Democrat Chris Coons’
lead in Delaware’s U.S. Senate race from 19 points to 10 points. The latest
Monmouth University Poll
finds Coons has the support of 51% of likely voters to 41% for O’Donnell. Two weeks ago, this race
stood at 57% to 38%.

O’Donnell has actually pulled into a 49% to 43% lead in the southern part of the state (i.e. Kent
and Sussex counties). Two weeks ago, this region of the state was divided at 47% for O’Donnell and
46% for Coons. The Democrat continues to hold a sizable advantage in New Castle County, but the
current 56% to 36% margin is down from the 63% to 33% edge he held earlier this month.
O’Donnell has also made gains among independent voters, now leading Coons 47% to 42%
among this voting bloc. Two weeks ago, she trailed in the independent vote by 51% to 41%.

“While Coons still has the advantage, it has to be uncomfortable knowing that O’Donnell was
able to shave 9 points off his lead in just two weeks. The interesting thing is that while her vote total has
risen, the majority of Delaware voters still say she is unqualified for the post,” said Patrick Murray,
director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

The poll found that just 35% of likely voters in Delaware feel that Christine O’Donnell is
qualified to be a U.S. Senator, while 56% say she is unqualified. That contrasts with their opinion of
Chris Coons, who 65% say is qualified for the U.S. Senate to 25% unqualified. These qualification
results for O’Donnell and Coons are basically identical to the Monmouth University Poll results from two
weeks ago.

25 General Election Candidate Interviews To Air Monday

Monday morning Salisbury News will compile all of our 25 candidate interviews for the general election. Man, I had no idea we had done that many!

Nevertheless, we want to make sure each and every one of you get the opportunity one last time to click on those candidates you may be on the fence over and listen to their answers a day before the election.

We did everything in our powers to get every single candidate in for these interviews and I can't thank the Salisbury News Contributors as well as our Endorsement Board for helping make this such a huge success. It was a lot of work and I can assure you we now know why most of the MSM stayed away from getting so involved. We feel their pain, believe me.

On a side note, I want to thank so many of you for your kind wishes and prayers recently with the passing of Art Goetz. Hopefully one day I'll get the chance, (time) to sit down and tell all of you just how inspirational Art was in the creation of Salisbury News. He was my #1 Fan.

Have a great weekend Folks and as always, we thank you so very much for your support.

Another Letter To The Editor

DAILY TIMES DOES DUMBED-DOWN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WICOMICO COUNTY COUNCIL

It’s shocking that any mainstream newspaper would publish drivel such as appears in the DT’s recommendations for the contested seats on the Wicomico County Council. Let’s looks at some of the statements made by its editors to explain their selection.

In the 1st District, the Republican, David Goslee, is described as "a farmer" with no mention of his full-time position as a division manager at the Pepsi bottling and distribution firm in Salisbury that has given him extensive business experience that his opponent (who is the DT’s choice) lacks.

In the 4th District, the recommendation is based mainly upon the fact that the choice is a one-term incumbent – which is deemed to give him "experience" that his opponent lacks, even though Bob Caldwell has served as a member and president of the Salisbury City Council.

But, in the 2nd District, the several terms of the incumbent, Stevie Prettyman, are not sufficient to make her the editors’ choice – instead they recommend a self described T-party member who has no experience in government or in business, but does have experience as a rabble-rouser who does effigy hangings at political rallies. No doubt he, too, will "work well" with Ireton.

In the at-large race, David Cowall is deemed to have leadership experience because he once was a medical officer in the Navy – without any mention of what he did in that capacity (apparently he was an entry level doc). Perhaps such military medical service by Andy Harris will result in the DT recommending him over Frank Kratovil.

The basis for these recommendations is ridiculous. For example, they suggest that David MacLeod would better represent the interest of Salisbury residents because he "works well" with Jim Ireton, but fail to mention that only Bob Caldwell, who supports the tax differential for City property, is a City resident and that he favors the full homestead tax credit for all owner-occupied homes throughout the entire County.

We could go on and on, but will conclude as follows – don’t read (or if you have, disregard) those recommendations.

Obama Sets Muslim Outreach For Indonesia Trip

Barack Obama will visit Indonesia's largest mosque and make a major outdoor speech directed at the global Muslim community when he visits Indonesia next month, the White House said Thursday.

Obama leaves on Nov. 5 on a 10-day trip to India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan. On Nov. 10 in Jakarta, Obama will visit the Istiqlal Mosque, and then make his speech from another, outdoor location, where there could be a large crowd.

"He'll have a chance to talk about the partnership that we're building with Indonesia, but also to talk about some of the themes of democracy and development and our outreach to Muslim communities around the world," deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told a news conference.

First lady Michelle Obama is also going to Jakarta.

The U.S. president was due to travel to Indonesia in March and in June, but put off the visit each time because of domestic political concerns, which disappointed and angered some Indonesians.

But Obama remains popular in the world's most populous Muslim country, where he spent four years while growing up, even as confidence in him has dropped in other Muslim states since he made a major speech in Cairo in June 2009 seeking a new beginning with the Islamic world.

Obama also will announce a new "comprehensive partnership" with Indonesia on security, economic and people-to-people issues, said Jeffrey Bader, the president's top Asian adviser.

He will talk about the partnership in the speech, but also Indonesia's rise as a democracy and emerging economy, close relationship with the United States and pluralism.

"Visiting this mosque and in his speech, I think he'll have the opportunity to underscore the themes that he's made in terms of outreach to Muslim communities around the world," Rhodes told the news conference.

Obama had been expected to visit another major religious site during his Asian tour, the Sikh Golden Temple in the northern Indian city of Amritsar. Indian media reports said the visit was canceled after aides balked at the idea of the U.S. president wearing the scarf or skullcap required at the site.

Rangel Plan Gives Obama 'Civilian Security Force'

When Barack Obama was campaigning for president in 2008, he visited Colorado Springs and WND broke the the story that he wanted a "Civilian National Security Force" as big and as well-funded as the $650 billion-plus U.S. military. Now Charlie Rangel is proposing that he have it.

Rangel, facing ethics charges in Congress, has proposed the Universal National Service Act that would require "all persons" from ages 18-42 "to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security."

The plan also authorizes "the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, and for other purposes."

According to the copy of Rangel's plan, which has been assigned to the Subcommittee on Military Personnel even though it lacks cosponsors, it specifies that "national service" means "military service or service in a civilian capacity that, as determined by the president, promotes national defense, including national or community service and service related to homeland security."

"It is the obligation of every citizen of the United States, and every other person residing in the United States, who is between the ages 18 and 42 to perform a period of national service as prescribed in this title," it specifies.

It would require that the president provide "for the induction" of people to the service corps.

"Except as otherwise provided in this section, the period of national service performed by a person under this title shall be two years," Rangel wrote.

The exceptions provide that the term of service may be extended if the "member" needs to "compensate for any time lost to training for any cause" or "for the purpose of furnishing hospitalization, medical, or surgical care for injury or illness incurred in the line of duty."

It gives the president the far-reaching authority to "prescribe such regulations as are necessary to carry out this title," including what types of "civilian service" are required, "standards of satisfactory performance," "penalties for failure" and "such other matters as the president determines necessary to carry out this title."

Conscientious objectors would be ordered "to perform national civiliain service … as the president may prescribe."

Concerns Grow About Election Fraud, Voter Intimidation

As if this election season weren't already tense enough, fears about voter fraud — and some of the steps that are being taken to combat it — have created more worries.

With control of Congress in the balance, both political parties are gearing up for a possibly wild and woolly Election Day around the country.

"Legal war rooms," roving teams of lawyers, hot lines and poll challengers are all part of the strategy that Democrats and Republicans will employ Tuesday to handle suspected fraud or to help voters whose right to vote is questioned.

The issue is also on the Justice Department's radar. It will post federal monitors at selected polling places around the country, and prosecutors, civil rights attorneys and the FBI will be tasked with handling election-related complaints that day. A special toll-free number — 1-800-253-3931 — will be available for complaints about ballot access.

A lot is just precautionary and not out of the ordinary. What's different this year is that candidates and others also are getting into the act.

Ed Martin, a Republican congressional hopeful in St. Louis, intends to deploy a "Count Every Vote Unit" to look for possible voter fraud.

Republican Rep. Mark Kirk, who's running for the Senate in Illinois, has a "voter integrity program" in place for Election Day.

Tea party groups plan to use "surveillance squads" at polling places to record possible voting misbehavior. Some tea party groups already have questioned voter registration records.

"This is happening to a degree we haven't seen in years," said Wendy Weiser, a voting rights expert at the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law. "The concern with ballot security operations is not with their intent. They can be highly confrontational. That can cross the line into intimidation and voter suppression."

Democrats claim that the fears about fraud are overblown and are being stoked by Republicans and conservatives to scare off voters, particularly minorities, many of whom tend to vote Democratic. In the Illinois U.S. Senate race, for instance, Kirk can be heard on a taped conference call saying where his "voter integrity program" would be sent, and it was largely African-American neighborhoods.

Republicans deny that they are raising false alarms about voter fraud and say that their concerns are legitimate.

"We have had some problem in the past with folks voting that should not have happened," said Lloyd Smith, the executive director of the Missouri Republican Party.

Among those was the famous case in 2000 of Ritzy Meckler — a dog — listed on the St. Louis voter registration rolls. Smith likened the party's preparations this year to "a speed limit on a highway. It's not there to write you a ticket, but to make sure everyone plays by the rules."

Its Going To Be A Big Year For Republicans!

Hundreds, (and I do mean hundreds) of people gathered this morning at the Republican Headquarters Victory Center in Salisbury to meet with a overwhelming crowd of republican politicians.

Again Folks, the Daily Times refused to be there stating, "It's too close to the election to cover it." And you're paying a subscription for????????

Nevertheless, more than a million phone calls have gone out to reach as many voters as possible and hopefully get them to the polls. When you get this many politicians together more so to thank ALL of those volunteers helping them with their campaigns, it's refreshing. They have gone the extra mile to do so and the republican party is proving to work hard for your votes this election cycle.

A Comment VERY Worthy Of A Post!!!!!!!!!

Allan Webster would be the worst possible Sheriff Somerset could ever have thrust upon it.

I have heard good and not so good stories about Sheriff Jones performance as Sheriff. However as I recently suggested to a Mt.Vernon resident "It is better the Devil you know than the one you do not know".

Alan Webster would cost the Somerset taxpayer significant monies just to fund his travel agenda. Webster lives to travel to any and all law enforcement meetings regardless of where they are or how much he would bill the county to send him.

I suspect he would continue his demonstrated wearing of civilian clothes rather than the tridional wearing of the Sheriffs uniform. As he toured about the County, and the State in his unmarked, county provided vehicle.

As Chief of the Salisbury Police Dept., he consitently demonstrated a reluctance to cooperate with other Wicomico County police agencies.

Mr Webster seeks the Office of Sheriff in Somerset simply to feed his ultra ego. He cares not a wit for the people of Somerset, only his desire to carry the prestige of being the Sheriff of Somerset County.

Somerset voters would be well advised to think long and hard about this position. Webster is a "come here" no matter what he tell's you about his connection to the Eastern Shore,he is Baltimore through and through.

Deceptive Political Ad

Joe,

Have you seen the deceptive political flier that the Democratic party put out in support of Frank Kratovil?

I’m a “hard R” and not everyone received this, so I assume that the Dems mailed this to all of the “hard R’s” in the first congressional district.

While at first it looks like a negative piece, it is actually trying to get republicans to vote for the libertarian/tea party candidate for Congress.

It uses phrases like “complete outside”, “too conservative” to describe the libertarian candidate.  Telling a “hard R” that a candidate would cut government spending and would drastically reduce the size of government, makes the candidate more appealing.

Frankly, my first reaction was “who the heck is Richard Davis” and then I saw he was running as libertarian for Congress on the sample ballot

Then, you look and see that the piece was paid for by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and you realize what they are trying to do.  They are hoping hard core Republicans and tea party supporters will vote for Davis instead of Andy Harris, thereby stealing votes away and giving the election to Frank Kratovil.

Maryland House 37-A – Dustin Mills

District 37-A is drawn as a “Minority – Majority” District.  In other words, the African-American population exceeds the white population.  For the last 12 years that district has been represented by Rudy Cane.  It’s time for a change, and Dustin Mills offers a credible alternative.

Many would argue that Cane has served his constituents well for three terms.  If your definition of a good representative in Annapolis is someone who is a nice guy and doesn’t hesitate to vote for bloated budgets and higher taxes, Cane is your man.

District 37-A leans heavily towards agriculture.  Included in the District are many African-American farmers.  Yet, Cane has refused to step forward and fight as the state attempted to force Wicomico County to strip farmers of their property rights.  Many citizens wish, or attempt, to start small businesses.  Yet, Cane’s support of a liberal, anti-business agenda has made starting new business difficult for both his white AND African-American constituents.

Mills is young.  He is energetic.  Mills is well versed on the issues facing District 37-A and will stand up for the interests of his constituents (if elected).  Rather than rely on government spending, Mills advocates getting government out of the way of entrepreneurs, watermen, and farmers to allow them to succeed on their own merits.  In other words, Mills supports the same sort of ideals which made America great.

Mills is not only worthy of the voters’ support, he will (if elected) prove to be a solid representative for the folks of Dorchester and Wicomico counties.

Maryland House 37-B – Eckardt, Haddaway

District 37-B covers all of Talbot County, along with portions of Caroline, Dorchester, and Wicomico counties.  This district is not only geographically large, but also geographically, economically, and demographically diverse.  With constituents spanning the spectrum of watermen, farmers, small business owners, blue collar workers, white collar employees, and retirees (some incredibly wealthy, others very modest in their means), this district makes special demands on its two delegates to the Maryland House.  Addie Eckardt and Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio have proven themselves capable of serving this large and diverse district well.  These two ladies should be returned to office with an overwhelming show of support.

Don’t think that we’re giving short shrift to Ms. Haddaway, but the fact is that Jeannie will be re-elected.  Because of the rules governing her district, the two members must come from different counties.  Because the only Democrat candidate, Patrice Stanley, lives in Dorchester County (as does Eckardt), Haddaway need only show up on election to vote for herself to guarantee a return trip to Annapolis in January.  Haddaway is definitely worthy of support, and a longer endorsement.  We’re just trying to save our fingers and your eyes.

Eckardt has served her constituents well since first elected in 1994.  She serves on the Appropriations committee and the the important Joint AELR committee.  She also serves on various committees dealing with health, mental health and child issues.  Given Eckardt’s career as a nurse (both practicing and in academic settings), she brings greater than average expertise to these areas.

Given that Eckardt’s background is in health care, some are surprised at her grasp of economic issues.  Eckardt understands that business, particularly small business, and not the government is the engine which drive’s our economy.  Eckardt is fiscally conservative without being an ideologue.  She possesses a strong philosophical base to her approach to economic matters, yet doesn’t come off as strident.  In addition, Eckardt (along with Haddaway) is able to reconcile the needs of our environment with the need to grow our state and local economy.

For 16 years Addie Eckardt has distinguished herself as a leader in her community, in her party, and in the Maryland House.  By taking a common sense, pragmatic approach to issues she has served the citizens of 37-B well.  She deserves their support for another term.

Webster = Taylor

Hi Joe...
I wanted to write you to tell you about an incident that occurred today in hopes you can help me by getting the word out there about what kind of man, or lack of man, Allan Webster really is.
Apparently, Ronnie and Bobby Jones were down in Crisfield today.  They were in a business, when Ronnie observed Allan Webster across the street, taking a picture of Ronnie's car with his cell phone.  Now exactly what purpose did that serve?  Not to mention, it's creepy!  As soon as I was told this story, I was certain it would end up on the blog by afternoon.  Sure enough, and reluctantly on my part, I went to the Taylor's site.  Just as I thought, Taylor had taken a previous picture he had of Ronnie and Bobby and after photo shopping ignorant and immature writings on the photo wrote "Seems good ole Bobby and Ronnie in full uniform were out campaigning this morning. It is so wonderful that they don't have to follow the law they are supposed to enforce".  Now using common sense here, unless Taylor was down here following the deputies around, this information had to be given to him by Webster himself.   There is no other explanation.  This is a grown man, running for the position of Sheriff, and yet he participates in trashy blogs such as Taylors.  The public needs to know this!  And exactly why does he think Ronnie and Bobby were campaigning?  Because he hoped it would benefit him!  Last time I checked, you were allowed to talk to whomever you wanted, whenever you wanted, from wherever you wanted.  I am appalled and disgusted that Webster is supplying such distorted information to a biased site, such as Taylors.  What makes it even worse, I posted a comment on Taylor's site, calling Webster out, and my post did not get published.  I sent a second post, and that one was not published either.  Go figure!
There is also a Deputy that lives in the same neighborhood as Webster's.  This deputy had placed a Bobby Jones campaign sign on their family's property.  Webster had the nerve to go up to her and ask WHY she had done such?
Webster has also told numerous individuals (who all go back and tell the Deputies) that Webster has made the comment that WHEN he wins, he will be getting rid of Les Tyler, Rennie Miles and George Nelson.  This is from a man who does not know these men, has not worked a day in his life with either of them, yet he's ignorant enough to be making these comments?  He said he has "issues" with these men.  His issue is the fact that they support their boss, Bobby, and have been campaigning (on their off time) for him.  Now...wouldn’t you think, that if Webster was already in the position of Sheriff, and it was election year, he'd have a group of men that stood behind him and campaigned for him?   His ignorance never ends!
Allan's wife is putting the word out there (as told to Ronnie) that once Allan wins, he's going to have a clean sweep of deputies.  Last time I checked, you couldn’t come into the office and just start firing!  Their positions are protected by the Law Enforcement Officer's Bill of Rights.  Ronnie has also been informed that Allan's been up in Wicomico County recruiting officers that he wants to come down to the Somerset County Sheriff's Dept.  Yet when Webster is confronted with such, he denies and says all the deputies that are currently working in the Somerset County Sheriff's Department are a "good group of men".  Which is it?  Are you going to clean sweep or keep the ones that are there?  He's talking out of both sides of his mouth...typical politician!
I'm sorry I took so much of your time, but I have been OFF all day!  I cannot believe this man, running for such a position as Sheriff, is taking pictures on his cell phone and then calling trashy Taylor to have him post such garbage!
We're praying Bobby Jones wins...God help us if he doesn’t...this whole County is in big trouble!

Today's Survey Question

Will You Be Spending More Or Less This Holiday Season?

The Daily Times Endorses Calpino

"We urge District 2 voters to give Calpino an opportunity to test his ideas by electing him to serve on the council."

While they have nothing bad to say about Stevie Prettyman and her 12 years of being on the County Council, the Daily Times conveniently forgets to mention that 7 members of the Libertarian Party from the Western Shore voted for Mr. Calpino to represent them in Wicomico County to get him on the ballot.

Look, does the Daily Times really support this guy, or do they simply dislike Stevie Prettyman so much, (on a personal level) that they would endorse anyone to fill her seat. Stevie Prettyman is a strong woman and this scares them.

What gets me the most is, people actually pay good money each day to get that newspaper and quite frankly their cuts in staff are proving they are clueless. Allow me to give you an example.

You know the obituary of my Father In Law that we had published 4 days ago. That EXACT document that we published was sent in to the Daily Times, yet it hasn't been published! WHY, because they claimed they can't CONVERT the jpg image of Art Goetz. You talk about a complete line of crap! They haven't published his obituary because they don't like Joe Albero, PERIOD.

An honorable man dies, a man that gave so much to his County and his Community and they disrespect him simply because of me. I "URGE" all of you to call the Daily Times today and cancel your subscription. We'll have obituaries in January here on Salisbury News. Oh, guess what. Our Obituaries will be FREE too.

Stevie Prettyman will again serve Wicomico County well for another 4 years. That's a guarantee.

Joel Todd Throws Wife Under Bus

Joel Todd seems to have a pretty unique philosophy of running for re-election:
  • If you are running behind – LIE!
  • If you get caught – Claim it was “JUST AN HONEST MISTAKE”
  • If you get caught on that on – BLAME IT ON SOMEONE ELSE!
Well, our incumbent State’s Attorney for Worcester County seems to have made it all the way to #3!  Worse – the person he’s letting hold the bag happens to be his wife.
As we noted on Wednesday, Todd’s campaign was caught sending out four different mailings claiming that certain people were supporting his re-election bid.  Problem was that some of those folk hadn’t given their permission.  Some weren’t even supporting Todd!
What was Todd’s response?  He has his wife send a letter to the editor in to the Worcester County Times where she claims full responsibility for “AN HONEST MISTAKE”.  That would be OK, except that any person of moderate intelligence who also has the facts available to them can only conclude that this wasn’t an honest mistake and that Todd has to take the blame.
I have never met either Todd or his wife Anita.  They may well be two of the nicest folk that ever drew a breath.  If we were talking about ONE mailing, I would be more than willing to accept Mrs. Todd’s mea culpa.  Here’s the problem – THERE WERE FOUR MAILINGS!  That’s right – FOUR.  We have to conclude that Todd (or he and his wife) did this deliberately.  But wait!  There’s more.
Joel Todd’s wife didn’t give an interview to the Ocean Pines Independent where she stated that OPA Director Ray Unger ENDORSED her husband.  No, Joel Todd managed to do that all on his own.  Ironically, a letter from Unger stating his support for Todd’s opponent appears in the Worcester County Times just above Mrs. Todd’s.
It has also been reported that Todd was told by Berlin Police Chief Arnold Downing AND the Worcester County Board of Elections that Downing’s photo or endorsement could NOT be used because of Downing’s position as a Chief Election Judge.  Now Downing has been removed as an election judge.  I doubt that this bothers Todd too much.  He needs “law enforcement support”.  It doesn’t matter whether he has to lie about it, or cause harm to Chief Downing.  The important thing is that Joel Todd gets re-elected.  This isn’t about truth, or justice, or just doing the right and honorable thing.  This is about winning an election.
Do the good folk of Worcester County really deserve a State’s Attorney whose mantra isn’t “The Rule of Law”, but rather, “The Ends Justify the Means”?

One In Six Will Suffer A Stroke - Will You Be That One?

Friday, Oct. 29, is World Stroke Day.

The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association are joining with the World Stroke Organization, an international health organization, to spread the message about the global threat of stroke.

This year’s theme is “One in Six: Act Now!” One of every six people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime. Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in the United States and the second-leading cause of death in the world. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States suffers a stroke.

Here’s something you can do on World Stroke Day: At precisely 1:06 p.m., take the My Life Check assessment to learn where you stand with health factors that could lead to stroke. Then share the link with six special people in your life. The assessment tool allows you to determine your level of heart health, identify risk factors and change behavior.
The World Stroke Organization also wants you to Act Now by taking on these six challenges to lower your stroke risk:
Know the risk factors for stroke that you can do something about — high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol — and work to keep them in a healthy range.
Be physically active and exercise regularly
Adopt a healthy diet.
Limit alcohol consumption.
Avoid cigarette smoke - anybody's cigarette smoke. If you do smoke, seek help to stop now.
Learn to recognize the warning signs of a stroke and how to take action

The Daily Times Pimping Kratovil

"I can't but help to notice The Daily Times recent optimistic reporting activities.  In the midst of one of the darkest recessions our region has ever seen - and - with the vast amounts of documented exiting businesses - all of a sudden The Daily Times start's touting our regions new business activity.  Could it be that The Daily Times has an agenda?  Could it be that The Daily Times is trying to prop up a losing ground campaign for Kratovil?  Afterall - wasn't it The Daily Times that touted the Gilchrest camp right-up until his defeat to Andy Harris!
I'll make just one response to The Daily Times reporting - bah hum bug.  If our area were to make way for one new business start-up per week - (an impossible task) -  it would take almost take two years to be at the same business levels where we were 10 years ago.
My advise to The Daily Times - go back to the drawing board - your solution to the equation is wrong."

Thank God Its Friday

New GOP Generation Younger, More Conservative

If Republicans win the House, all but a few of of the two dozen GOP chairmen will be first-timers with the gavel, a strong sign that a new generation of Republican leadership has dawned, ushering in a slate of mostly conservative younger chairmen who will control debate on everything from tax cuts to a farm bill to business regulation.

In broad terms, the Republican chairmen will be policy conservatives but not bomb-throwing ideologues. Many of them are legislators who know how to cut a deal. And above all, the new chairmen will be loyalists to Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner of Ohio. In a bid to reform Congress, Boehner has promised to devolve power back to these chairmen to give them more freedom and more legislative legroom, a contrast to the centralized bill-writing Republicans complained of under Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Free To Good Home

Good morning Joe,

Attached is a picture of a yellow lab I am trying to help someone find a home for.  He is 3-4 years old knows his basic commands, and is house broken.  The owner is moving and can not take him with her.  She called the humane society and they told her if we take him he will be euthanized.  She just wants to make sure he goes to a GOOD home, so if you could post this on you site I would greatly appreciate it.

One In 10 Sexually Active Teens Has Same-Sex Partners

A new study suggests that nearly 1 in 10 sexually active teens have same-sex partners – almost twice as many as previous research found. According to a 2002 study of Massachusetts and Vermont teens, only 5 percent to 6 percent of teens had same-sex partners.

In the new study, 9.3 percent of teens said they did.

"Clearly there's a high rate of same-sex partners among teens, and we need to recognize any vulnerabilities that may be associated with these behaviors," said Dr. Susan Blank, an assistant commissioner at the NYC Health Department. Blank, who was not involved with the study, was referring to a lower rate of condom use and unwanted sex among teens with same-sex partners seen in the study.

The new research, published in the journal Pediatrics, looked at more than 17,000 teens in New York City. It found that teens who had sex with only their own gender or with both genders were more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors, putting themselves at greater risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of the 18 million new cases of STDs that occur each year happen among people aged 15 to 24.

Governors’ Judicial Appointments Have Lasting Impact

Most of the campaign spotlight has been focused on what Gov. Martin O’Malley and former governor Bob Ehrlich plan to do during the next four years in terms of the economy, taxes and spending, missing an area where the next governor will also have lasting influence: judicial appointments.

With terms ranging from 10 to 15 years – and then the potential of staying on the bench for several terms after that – the judges a governor selects could make a lasting impression on the state and its laws.

For all of the state’s courts, a nominating commission vets people who apply to be judges. The top picks are presented to the governor, who does his own investigation and makes his selection. For circuit court judges, the governor’s selection is checked by putting those judges -- plus other attorneys interested in the position -- on the ballot after at least a year of service for the people to vote on.

Statistics kept by Baltimore attorney Chris West have shown that the state’s last two Democratic governors have overwhelmingly named Democrats to the bench. Some candidates -- like Alison Asti, a Republican in Anne Arundel County -- have said the process is biased and have challenged the sitting judges.

Bayrunner Shuttle Is Looking For Drivers

Joe,

Hope you can help me with this. I have advertised in the DT in the past, but they require long postings, and they are expensive. Also, usually I have found the people I need in just a couple of days and then have weeks of walk in applicants who are disappointed. And quite frankly I think your audience is appropriate for what we are doing. So here goes;

Bayrunner is looking to hire a few good drivers.

Qualifications are:

1. A clean driving record (O points), and a clean criminal record. Must be able to prove both to get required Public Service Commission drivers license. A Commercial Drivers License is not required or desired. A love of driving is. Must not be averse to heavy highway traffic.

2. Ability to get along with customers for long stretches ( 2 hours or more while driving to/from Baltimore). This aspect of qualification is stressed, as our drivers are one of the KEY elements of our success to this
point, and are constantly praised by our customers.

3. Flexibility. Must be able to work any hours from 5am to 12 mid. Shifts are about 6 hours, and are scheduled mostly in advance. However, in our business things are always changing, so applicant must realize this and be able to adapt. We are a 365 day business, so weekends and holidays are to be expected.

Benefits:

1. Reasonable pay, reasonable tips. Great people to work with! Job stability.

2. Hours: 20-35 per week.

3. Uniforms (shirts and winter jackets) are provided.

4. Recent retirees welcome.

Interested persons should apply in person at Bayrunner office at 547C Riverside Dr., Salisbury, between the hours of 9am - 5pm  M-F.

HPV Shots For Boys Debated By Experts

U.S. vaccine advisers are weighing whether boys and young men should be vaccinated against the human wart virus that causes a number of cancers, but some worry the vaccine is too costly to justify its use. Some men would also benefit from the vaccine, including homosexuals and bisexuals, who are at risk of developing anal cancers and other conditions caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, the experts said.

A Letter To The Editor

Its Not Always About Winning
Hi Joe,
Laurel middle school football coaches should be ashamed of themselves. What ever happened to the sport being about the kids? The same kids play over and over and these coaches have no idea how to alternate and play EVERYONE on the team. There are at least 15 kids who have stood on the sidelines this entire season who have been to every practice and worked hard to do nothing but watch. What is that teaching them? To work hard and do whats expected of you for what? A few have already quit the team this year because of not being able to play, but a few have tried to stick it out in hopes of being able to be a part of the team. This week there were two important games. One against their rival, Delmar and another against Seaford, which was the only night game to be played this season. The coaches told the kids that everyone would be playing this week at both games but that wasn't true. Not everyone played at Delmar and Laurel won tonight against Seaford 34-12 and the same people played the whole time, which means the same people wanting to have a chance to play, watched. Whats wrong with you "coaches?" If you can't do it right, find another thing to take up your time. It's not always about winning.

Capitol Hill's "Camelot" Era Comes To An End

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. Two years ago, it would have been unthinkable that both seats held by Kennedy family members could be won by Republicans.
But Scott Brown's January election to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's former Massachusetts seat paved the way, and now the GOP is hoping Rhode Island state Rep. John J. Loughlin II will give an encore performance in the race for the U.S. House seat held by Patrick J. Kennedy, the late senator's son, in Tuesday's election.
"What we are finding in Rhode Island is exactly what we found in Massachusetts during Scott Brown's election, and that is extreme voter unrest about the liberal, big-government, agenda that is bankrupting our nation," said Eric Fehrnstrom, the architect of Mr. Brown's win and now a strategist with the Loughlin campaign.
"People are just now beginning to wake up to the fact that our country is on the brink of financial ruin and Rhode Island is not immune to the voter backlash that we are witnessing in other parts of the country."
Whatever the outcome of the race, the election will mark the end of an era in American politics that dates back to 1946 when John F. Kennedy won a House seat in Massachusetts. Each year since then, at least one member of the Kennedy family has been in the White House, the U.S. House, or the U.S. Senate.
"It really is the end of the line for the Kennedys politically because when Patrick Kennedy leaves office I think the only Kennedy left is someone on the Santa Monica City Council," said Darrell M. West, a former Brown University professor who now works at the left-leaning Brookings Institution. "When you think about the fact that at one point they had a president and two senators and now they are down to a city council seat, that pretty much tells the story."
Robert S. Shriver, a nephew to the former president and brother of California's first lady, Maria Shriver, is serving his second term on the Santa Monica City Council, this time as mayor.

Location: 1000 block of Pierce Avenue, Salisbury, MD
Suspect: 1. Male Juvenile, 17, Salisbury, MD
2. Male Juvenile, 17, Salisbury, MD

Narrative: On 27 October 2010 at 8:01 PM, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a burglary in progress in the 1000 block of Pierce Avenue in Salisbury. Responding deputies were advised that one subject was believed to have entered a residence while another subject stood out front and acted as a lookout. Upon arrival, the deputies located two subjects in close proximity of the house being burglarized that matched the descriptions provided. Upon checking the residence where the burglary was reported, the deputies observed that a screen in a rear window had been cut out and the window was open. One of the subjects stopped by the deputies was found to have a knife in his possession. During the investigation, it was determined that even though the juveniles cut the window screen out and opened the window, they did not enter the residence prior to the deputies arriving.

Both of the subjects identified as 17 year old juveniles when they were taken into custody. The deputies transported them back to the Sheriff’s Office where authorities from the Department of Juvenile Services were contacted. The Department of Juvenile Services detained one of the youths in the Lower Shore Children’s Center while they released the second to a guardian.

Senator Colburn Reaches Out To Citizens & Candidates

Cambridge – Senator Richard F. Colburn (R. Eastern Shore) stated today, "Several concerns have been brought to my attention recently regarding the destruction, vandalizing, and theft of political signs in support of both Democratic and Republican candidates. The United States is a democracy that supports its citizens’ right to freedom of expression—and that includes the freedom to display political signs. Many have sacrificed their lives for these freedoms, which include the right the vote and to vote freely. Therefore, I urge all voters to respect the rights of other voters and their freedom to express their political views."

TROOPERS TRACK DOWN PA CHILD RAPE SUSPECT

(ELKTON, MD) – A request for assistance from Pennsylvania State Police led to an intense search by Maryland State Police that resulted in the capture of a suspect wanted for raping a child.

Maryland State Police at the Bel Air Barrack were contacted by Pennsylvania State Police in Montgomery County, PA, on the evening of October 26, 2010 and asked to help in the search for a suspect wanted for the rape and sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl. Pennsylvania authorities said the suspect, Daniel R. Gregor, 23, of Pottstown, PA, was believed to be in Harford County, but only for a short time. Police believed he was planning to flee the United States and knew he needed to be located and arrested immediately.

State Police criminal investigators from the Bel Air Barrack began an immediate investigation and attempted to locate Gregor. They enlisted support from the State Police Criminal Investigation Division and Computer Crimes Unit. Working through the night, they were able to determine Gregor was not in Harford County.

Further investigation developed leads that indicated Gregor may be in Elkton. Troopers from the North East Barrack were called in to help, as were troopers from the State Apprehension Team. Their continuing investigation led troopers to identify a home in the 300-block of West Main Street as the place Gregor was staying with a relative.

At 6:30 a.m. yesterday, troopers went to the residence and Gregor was arrested without incident. He was taken to the Bel Air Barrack for processing. He is being held in the Cecil County Detention Center as a fugitive, pending extradition proceedings by officials in Pennsylvania.

Gregor is not currently charged with any crimes in Maryland. Troopers recovered two laptop computers from the bedroom Gregor was using. Those computers will be examined by the State Police Computer Crimes Unit. If child pornography is found on those computers, Gregor could face charges related to that in Maryland.

TROOPERS DRESSING UP THIS WEEKEND BUT NOT IN COSTUME - STATE POLICE LAUNCHING EXTRA DUI PATROLS

(Pikesville, MD) – No costumes, but additional troopers will be wearing their usual uniforms as part of extra Maryland State Police drunk driving patrols that will be deployed this weekend in every county in Maryland.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Terrence B. Sheridan has ordered each of the 22 barracks to conduct drunk driving saturation patrols in an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities caused by drunk driving crashes. “Our goal this weekend is to locate and arrest drunk drivers before they are involved in a crash that results in injury or death,” Colonel Sheridan said. “Troopers will accept no excuses for drunk driving this or any other weekend. Anyone planning to mix alcohol and driving this weekend should also plan to meet a Maryland state trooper who will not have treats, but will have handcuffs and will provide a free ride to jail.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2008, 58 percent of all highway fatalities on Halloween night involved a driver or a motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, which is illegal in Maryland and every other state. Maryland law states a driver with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher is driving under the influence and a driver with a blood alcohol content of .07 is driving while impaired. Either charge will lead to an arrest and could result in a significant fine, jail time, and points on a driver’s license.

In Maryland, a first offense for driving under the influence could result in a fine of up to $1,000 and a sentence of up to one year in jail. In addition, the violation would mean 12 points on the offender’s driver’s license and a license revocation for six months. Driver’s licenses are confiscated by police from those refusing to take a blood alcohol test and from those whose test result is .08 or higher.

Extra troopers will be saturating roads and highways where incidents of DUI crashes are highest. The additional troopers solely focused on drunk driving patrols will be working on overtime funded by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office. The regular complement of road patrol troopers will also be on the alert from drunk drivers while fulfilling their normal duties.

In 2009, police across Maryland made 24,422 arrests for drunk driving. From 2004 through 2009, DUI arrests numbers have ranged between 24,144 and 25,129 per year.

Those planning to drink alcoholic beverages are urged to make plans to get home safely before they begin drinking. Options include arranging for a sober driver, to whom you gave your keys, to drive you home; use a taxi; call a friend or family member to pick you up; or use public transportation.

State troopers are urging motorists to contact police if they see a driver who might be operating under the influence. Troopers and allied law enforcement will make every attempt to locate the driver and take the appropriate enforcement action.
