It's Time To Take 'National' Out Of Prayer

Written by Charles C. Haynes
May 14, 2011|
In case you missed it, on May 5 the president of the United States called the nation to prayer -- just as past presidents have done on the first Thursday of every May since 1952. Mandated by Congress, the National Day of Prayer was marked this year by events around the country, many organized by the National Day of Prayer Task Force, an evangelical Christian group that maintains the self-described "official site" on the Web.
A government-sponsored "prayer day" is a vestige of a bygone era when the majority faith was often imposed as a national creed. For much of our history, minority faiths -- as well as atheists and secular humanists -- have been mostly invisible.
But in 2011, we live in a different country. Millions of Americans pray openly and freely to a bewildering variety of gods and goddesses -- and a growing number to none. One "prayer day" no longer fits all, if it ever did.
Despite expanding religious diversity, most Americans (76 percent, according to a 2010 First Amendment Center survey) still support a congressionally mandated day of prayer. Nevertheless, the practice hasn't gone unchallenged.
Last year, a federal judge in Wisconsin struck down the statute authorizing the National Day of Prayer as a violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment. But last month, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the decision, ruling that the group that brought the case did not have standing to file suit.
Atheists, freethinkers and secular humanists, often lumped together in the news media as "nonbelievers," are beginning to see success in leveling the playing field for the 16 percent or so of Americans who have no religious affiliation. Just last week, three atheists in Tulsa, Okla., including the local leader of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, were given licenses to perform marriages by the county clerk's office. What has long been limited to religious organizations is now open to secular groups -- at least in Tulsa.
Meanwhile, atheist and secular humanist groups are pushing hard for a military chaplain. Although "atheist chaplain" may strike some as an oxymoron, atheist groups say all service members should have access to counseling and support from someone who shares their beliefs. Some 9,400 military personnel identify themselves as atheists or secular humanists; there are probably many more among the 285,000 service members who claim no religious preference.
Atheists, freethinkers and secular humanists don't pray, but they have beliefs, values and community. By demanding licenses to perform marriages and military chaplains, they seek equal treatment. This makes constitutional sense. Under the First Amendment, the government is required to be neutral. If the state bestows legal recognition on religious groups, then it must give the same privileges to nonreligious groups.
As for prayer, it's time to take the "national" out of the National Day of Prayer. Let Americans organize a multitude of prayer days -- or none -- according to dictates of conscience, not proclamations of governments.

Congressman Describes Grisly bin Laden Photos

Ruppersberger was shown death pictures at CIA headquarters

They are the most sought-after photographs in the world, and U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger witnessed what many want to see: Images of slain terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Ruppersberger, who represents parts of Anne Arundel County in his Baltimore-area district, earned the position of top-ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee this year.

That's how Ruppersberger ended up as one of the few people who got to see the bin Laden pictures. He viewed them Thursday at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., and talked to The Capital about the experience:

Q: The thing everyone wants to know about is the photos. Can you walk us through what that was like to actually see those?

A: There were about eight to nine pictures, and each picture had a live picture of bin Laden and then a picture after he was shot.

When you got into detail, they would have arrows pointing to his nose or his ear to make sure you could see the comparison of one picture versus another.

Let me say this: My first impression when I saw the first picture, there was absolutely no equivocation, from my point of view, that this was Osama bin Laden.

We know who he is. This is a man who coordinated the attack on the United States. He killed Americans. He attacked our country. So he has a lot of facial recognition.

There was no equivocation in my mind after looking at both of these pictures, that the man that was brought to justice and dumped in the sea was Osama bin Laden.

Maryland Approves Use Of Deer Birth Control

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - Maryland has become the first state to approve the use of Gonacon, a deer birth control product, but the state's director of wildlife said Friday he can't imagine it ever being used in what he termed the open landscape.

"This is the only immuno-contraceptive for deer that has federal approval," said Paul Peditto, director of the Wildlife and Heritage Service. "It was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency.

"We feel good about being the first jurisdiction to approve its use," Peditto said. "It shows we have an open mind, but is not a magic bullet for deer control. It is an option in very limited circumstances and will have virtually no consequence in terms of day-to-day deer management and deer hunting. It won't be used in 98 percent of the state."

Peditto said the manpower and expense of applying the birth control chemical will limit its use.

"It will cost up to $1,000 to apply it to a deer," Peditto said. The deer must first be shot via dart gun to tranquilize it before Gonacon can be injected. EPA requires that the deer be tagged so that it can be identified as having been treated. Another tag will state that the meat of the animal should not be consumed by humans.

"It works on 80 percent of the deer that are injected," Peditto said. "The following year, however, half of those injected deer will become pregnant unless hand-injected a second time."

Peditto said authority to sedate, inject and tag deer won't simply be turned over to a home owners association and its maintenance crew.

Applicators must jump through several hoops, including registration, testing and association with a licensed veterinarian.

Feds Burn Texas During Obama Campaign Stop

Oh the irony!  On Tuesday while Barack Obama was in El Paso fanning the flames of anti-Republican rhetoric before a carefully selected crowd of adoring supporters, the ATF was setting off a blaze of its own in North Texas.  According to the Plainview Herald, an ATF training exercise got out of control and started a fire in the drought ravaged panhandle.

Seemingly unaware of the drought in North Texas and the recent wildfires which have devastated the region, the ATF decided to conduct a training exercise for area law enforcement bomb squad officers.  Shortly after the stockpile of explosives was detonated the “Fast and Furious” flames spread out of control and required nearly six hours and the efforts of five area volunteer fire departments to extinguish.  The flames consumed approximately 150 acres of pasture land in the already hard-pressed region.

Motley County Attorney Tom Edwards said the explosions could be heard up to 28 miles away from the site and that an investigation is in progress.  “We have the federal government that has just refused aid to the state of Texas for all our fire damage throughout the state, and then here comes federal agents who start another fire,” said an incredulous Edwards.  The ATF could face charges for violating the county’s ban on burning during the current drought.  The ATF agent in charge of the Lubbock office, Jim Luera has claimed full responsibility for the fire and the agency will reimburse landowners for their losses.

At a time when the ATF and Eric Holder’s DOJ are embroiled in controversy stemming from their “Gun Runner” and “Fast and Furious” campaigns which have increased the flow of firearms across the border into Mexico, it seems the height of incompetence to intentionally detonate explosives in a region which has already suffered from a series of devastating wildfires.  What could the ATF possibly have been thinking?

Malkin: What Happened On AA Flight 1561

If you listen to the passengers and crew who flew on American Airlines Flight 1561 last weekend, there's no doubt about what happened on their harrowing trip: A Yemeni man shrieking "Allahu akbar!" at the top of his lungs more than 30 times rushed the cockpit door twice intending to take down the plane and kill everyone on board.

The clammy, sweaty lone male passenger exhibited classic symptoms of what Middle East scholar and author Daniel Pipes has dubbed "Sudden Jihad Syndrome" -- a seemingly random outbreak of threatening behavior or violence by a hysterical Muslim adherent who had not previously exhibited signs of Islamic radicalization. It took at least four men to tackle and restrain Rageh Ahmed Mohammed al-Murisi. "There was no question in everybody's mind that he was going to do something," passenger Angelina Marty told the San Francisco Chronicle.

And no, that "something" did not mean enlisting his fellow flyers in a midair flash mob performance of the "Hallelujah Chorus."

Not everyone was so grounded in reality. Bleeding-heart sympathizers seriously speculated that al-Murisi had simply mistaken clearly marked lavatory doors for the clearly marked cockpit door (because, you know, it's normal to shout "God is great" repeatedly just before relieving yourself as your plane is about to land). Some federal authorities and media whitewashers proclaimed that al-Murisi's motives were "unknown."

If only al-Murisi had been screaming phrases from the Constitution. The Selective Motive Determination Machine -- the same one that rushed to pin the Tucson massacre on the Tea Party, the GOP and Fox News without a shred of evidence -- would have kicked in to full gear.

On Wednesday, a San Francisco judge denied al-Murisi bail. Unburdened by the paralyzing prissiness of political correctness, federal prosecutors noted that "Allahu akbar" was the same refrain invoked by the 9/11 hijackers over Shanksville, Pa., and by the would-be Christmas Day bomber over Detroit. Not to mention Fort Hood jihadist Nidal Hasan, the Frankfurt, Germany, jihadist who killed two U.S. airmen on a bus in March, the young Portland, Ore., Christmas tree lighting bomb plotter, every last suicide bomber across Europe, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, and every last evil al-Qaida beheader broadcast on video over the past decade.

So how, despite a massive transportation and homeland security apparatus, did al-Murisi get into this country and get on a plane? He had no keys, no luggage, $47 cash, two curious posted checks totaling $13,000, and a trove of expired and current state IDs from New York and California -- where relatives said he had not notified them that he was coming. He is young, male, brought no family with him, had no job or other discernible income, and hails from the terror-coddling nation of Yemen. Yes, the same Yemen that is Osama bin Laden's ancestral home, harbors al-Qaida operatives who are burning the "torch of jihad," and is deemed a "special interest country" whose citizens warrant increased scrutiny by DHS when they cross the border illegally.

Louisiana Residents Brace For Floods

After Mississippi River floodgate is opened for first time in nearly four decades to ease threat of flooding, thousands of low-lying farms and homes in Louisiana's countryside stand in the water's path.

MORGANZA, La. -- Over the next few days, water spewing through a Mississippi River floodgate will crawl through the swamps of Louisiana's Cajun country, chasing people and animals to higher ground while leaving much of the land under 10 to 20 feet of brown muck.

The floodgate was opened Saturday for the first time in nearly four decades, shooting out like a waterfall, spraying 6 feet into the air. Fish jumped or were hurled through the white froth and what was dry land soon turned into a raging channel.

The water will flow 20 miles south into the Atchafalaya Basin, and from there it will roll on to Morgan City, an oil-and-seafood hub and a community of 12,000.

Mark Alexander: Sunset Or Sunrise On Liberty?

A few decades ago, one of the national service opportunities I pursued required a battery of examinations including a comprehensive personality profile. After three days of psychological tests, a career profiler compiled my assessment.

In a later interview with said profiler, he looked at me and declared with candor, "You are crazy!"

That decree got no rise out of me. I have received that appraisal numerous times, but he did put a fresh perspective on it. He continued, "Not crazy in the pathological sense, but crazy in that you are one of very few people I have profiled who actually thrives in the midst of crisis and conflict." Apparently, most "normal people" try to avoid crisis and conflict.

He labeled my folder, "Warrior."

In light of this assessment and its outcome, my penchant for what Sam Adams called "the animated contest for freedom," I offer the following opinion about the future of American Liberty.

On occasion I have been critical of Barack Hussein Obama, a phony "community organizer" con man, who, with the help of his Leftist puppeteers, masterfully duped 69 million Americans into giving him the most expensive public housing and benefits in the nation.

I am most critical of this charlatan's political endeavor to demolish free enterprise with a debt bomb, and from the economic rubble, resurrect a transformed USSA subject to tyrannical rule under the oppression of Democratic Socialism.

Obama built his presidential campaign around the "change" theme: "This is our moment, this is our time to turn the page on the policies of the past, to offer a new direction. We are fundamentally transforming the United States of America."

His former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said infamously, "Never allow a crisis to go to waste," which was the basis for Obama's assertion, "this painful [economic] crisis provides us with an opportunity to transform our economy to improve the lives of ordinary people."

By no means will the full implementation of Democratic Socialism "improve the lives of ordinary people." As I have noted previously, Democratic Socialism, like Nationalist Socialism, is nothing more than Marxist Socialism repackaged. Likewise, it seeks a centrally planned economy directed by a single-party state that controls economic production by way of regulation and income redistribution.

The success of Democrat Socialism depends upon supplanting Essential Liberty -- the rights "endowed by our Creator" -- primarily by refuting such endowment.

Indeed, Obama's mission is transformation, and economic crisis is the horse he rode in on. It can also be the horse that he and his socialist cadre are chased out on.

Truth be told, I want to "fundamentally transform" what our nation has become after years of incremental encroachment upon Rule of Law by socialist predators, the most brazen offender in history being Obama. Indeed, I do not want the current economic "crisis to go to waste," and see it as a great opportunity to "change" our economy in such a way as to improve the lives of all Americans.

Of course, the opportunity I see in the current crisis is diametrically opposed to that which Obama and his Leftist cadres envision. I see a new dawn for Liberty on the horizon.

Resume
Seaford- The Delaware State Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a Delaware State Trooper last night in Seaford.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:37 p.m. as Alexander Reyes-Galo, 36, of Laurel was traveling eastbound from a crossover, attempting to cross the northbound lanes of US 13.  Reyes-Galo’s vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes of US 13 into the path of the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, being operated by a Delaware State Trooper assigned to Troop 5, Bridgeville.  The Trooper attempted to take evasive action when he observed the Dodge Intrepid and swerved to the right to avoid the collision.  The front of the Dodge Intrepid struck the driver’s side of the Ford Crown Victoria.  The force of the impact caused the Ford Crown Victoria to rotate clockwise, traveling over a concrete island, flipping over several times, landing on its roof in a grassy area east of the roadway.

Both operators were transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital by ambulance where they were being treated for non life threatening injuries.  Preliminary investigation reveals that both operators were wearing seatbelts.  US 13 northbound was closed for approximately 4.5 hours while the crash was investigated.  The Delaware State Police continue to investigate.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Leader To Run for President

A senior Muslim Brotherhood leader has announced plans to run for president of Egypt. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, 59, will run as an independent.

Fotouh is head of the Arab Doctors' Union and sits on the Brotherhood's Shura Council.

His candidacy shows a break with Brotherhood policy. The Muslim Brotherhood had previously promised not to field a candidate in the presidential elections, in an attempt to assuage concerns that Islamists would dominate the next government.

The Brotherhood has distanced itself from Fotouh and warned Thursday that if he does not withdraw his candidacy, he may be asked to leave the organization.

While the Brotherhood will not field a presidential candidate, its Freedom and Justice party plans to run for half of the parliamentary seats. The organization had previously said it would run for just one-third of the seats. Brotherhood officials say they have not changed their policy, but rather, are ensuring they will win one-third of the seats.

Volunteer Firefighter Charged With Rape

A firefighter with the Chancellor Volunteer Fire Department in Spotsylvania County, Virginia has been charged with raping a 13 year-old girl.

The victim thought she was texting a friend Friday night, but the message went to a wrong number and was received by volunteer firefighter Justin Neil Baber, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's office.

The teenager's text message was a simple "Hi," to which Baber allegedly responded "Hey who is this?" The two then had a brief text conversation during which the teenager stated she didn't know him, police say. Baber then asked if she lived in Spotsylvania and could sneak out and meet him.

The teen met Baber later that evening, according to a police press release. She later told a counselor that he was driving a white police type vehicle with radios in it. Investigators say Baber was driving a fire department response vehicle.

Baber, 23, from Spotsylvania has been arrested. He is in jail with no bond.

Virginia Tax Revenue on Rise

In one of the year's biggest months for tax collections, Virginia revenues in April continued showing growth, a sign the state is slowly pulling out of its record fiscal slump.
April general fund collections last month were up by 1.5 percent over April 2010. That's the 13th month in the past 14 that revenues have shown month-over-month growth.
It also brightens prospects that state government will end the fiscal year on June 30 with a small cash cushion and not be forced into another round of budget cuts.
Taxes withheld from salaries and paychecks, which account for nearly two-thirds of all general revenues, increased 6.5 percent over last April, and taxes paid by the self-employed and investors increased about 11 percent.

Jones-35 of New Castle, DE.

The investigation revealed that the suspect contacted an escort service and arranged to meet the 30 year old female victim at a predetermined location located at a residence in the 2000 block of Porter Road.  The 30 year old female victim, accompanied by the 40 and 55 year old female victims, drove to the location to meet David W. Jones.  Upon arrival at the residence the 30 year old female victim contacted Jones and went inside the house, while the other two females remained outside in the car.

Once inside the house, Jones identified himself as a Police Officer and displayed a gold badge and a weapon described as a “Taser” device.  Jones showed the 30 year old victim photo’s of two females that he stated that he was attempting to identify their “Pimp”.  Jones then bound the wrists of the victim, placed her in a bedroom and went outside and approached the two other females that were seated in the car.  Jones again identified himself as a Police Officer and had the two female victims exit the car and ordered them to follow him into the house.  Once inside he placed the 40 and 55 year old female victims in the bedroom with the 30 year old female and instructed all of them to remain in the bedroom and to wait for a female officer.

Jones then exited the residence and fled in the victim’s vehicle described as a 2008 Hyundai Elantra, red in color, with Pennsylvania registration GYM9263.

Detectives have obtained warrants charging David W. Jones with the above crimes.  Troopers continue to search for Jones who should be considered armed and dangerous.  Anyone that comes into contact with or observes Jones or the stolen vehicle that he fled in should contact 911 immediately.

Influencing Physicians, One Ad At A Time

Drug and device makers spend millions of dollars in advertising at medical conferences each year. But do ads necessarily lead to influence? And how does this affect the quality of care?

Every year, drug and device makers pour millions of dollars into advertisements at professional medical conferences. Plastering logos across buses, water coolers, keycards and more [1], these companies make their presence known hoping to persuade specialists to use their products.

While advertisements in and of themselves seem harmless, critics question the influence this money can have on professional groups that are also largely responsible for the writing guidelines on treatments and the use of medical devices. ProPublica senior reporters Charlie Ornstein and Tracy Weber investigate this issue in their latest report [2] and join the podcast this week to discuss the implications that financial influence can have on the medical community.

Students, Parents And Teachers Nationwide Protest Gutting Of Public Education

When 18-year-old Tiffini Baldwin decided to take part in a peaceful sit-in to speak out against the possible closure of Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA), a public school for pregnant girls and teen moms in Detroit, Michigan, she didn't think she'd be arrested.

"What's wrong with standing up for education? When the cops actually showed up, I was afraid. I was more afraid for my three-year-old daughter," she said. "The cops were trying to intimidate us the entire time, saying they would take our babies away, but I knew that wasn't true because we met with lawyers before the action."

In an interview withVoice of Detroit, 17-year-old Ashley Matthews said the cop who arrested her slammed her down on her stomach on the floor. "All the girls went berserk, telling him to get off me, but he was just wiping up the floor with me. He pressed his thumbs in my neck, and he tightened the handcuffs so hard that I have bruises there. I cried at first, but then I made myself stop."

DRIVER CHARGED IN CRASH WITH BUS

(CENTREVILLE, MD) – After a review of investigative information by the county state’s attorney, Maryland State Police have charged a driver in connection with yesterday’s Queen Anne’s County crash that sent 17 people to area hospitals.

The driver charged in the crash is identified as Carl Trenz Jr., 49, of the 100- block of Big Holly Court, in Stevensville, Maryland. At about 1:00 p.m. today, a state trooper issued traffic citations to Trenz at his home. He was charged with reckless driving, negligent driving, driver turning left failure to yield right of way to a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction, failure to yield right of way at a through highway, and failure to stop at an intersecting highway stop sign and yield the right of way.

Trenz was the driver of a 2010 Volkswagen Toureg that State Police investigators believe pulled from White Marsh Road shortly before 9:00 a.m. yesterday onto southbound Rt. 213 and into the path of a tour bus carrying kindergarten children and their parents. Sixteen of the 35 children and adults on-board the bus were transported to hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Trenz was also transported to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Maryland State Police investigators reviewed evidence from the investigation this morning with Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney Lance Richardson. After a review of the evidence, State’s Attorney Richardson approved the motor vehicle charges that were issued to Trenz.

The investigation is continuing.

McDonnell Seeks Storm Aid from Private Sector

After federal officials denied his disaster aid request, Gov. Bob McDonnell is turning to the state's businesses, nonprofits and residents to help the communities ravaged by tornadoes in April.

The request sought assistance for Halifax, Pulaski and Washington counties and their residents, whose lives were upended by storms that ripped through a swath of Southwest Virginia.

McDonnell is considering an appeal of the federal denial and has pledged state resources to help the recovery effort. Meanwhile, he's encouraging private companies, nonprofits, volunteers, faith-based organizations and residents to step up.

"Times of natural disasters and other hardships bring out the best in Virginians," said McDonnell, who traveled April 29 to Washington County to inspect the damage and personally deliver a pledge for assistance.

"Those who are directly impacted are resilient and do not give up. Those who have not suffered a loss themselves step in to lend a helping hand, financial support and assistance to those who are in need."

Frederick County Adopts Prayer

While the Salisbury City Council appears to be ending a 52 year old practice of prayer before each meeting, the Frederick County Commission has decided that it’s time to add a little prayer to their meetings.

Baltimore Council Woman Sues Blogger

It seems that SbyNEWS publisher Joe Albero isn’t the only Maryland blogger who is sued.  Baltimore City Councilwoman Belinda Conaway is suing Examiner.com blogger / columnist Adam Meister for $21 million; alleging libel and defamation.

Meister posted that Conaway owns a home in Randallstown which is listed as her primary residence on tax documents.  Conaway lists a Baltimore city address which is used by several members of her very political family.

Conaway should be careful what she wishes for.  It seems that she is poised on the horns of a dilemma.  If she is not a city resident, she cannot sit on the city council.  She lists a county resident as owner-occupied.  Not a city resident or a tax-cheat?

On the surface, this lawsuit seems to be going down the same road as Barrie Tilghman’s.

Carroll County Commissioners Oppose “Dream Act”

Many Marylanders are up in arms over the so-called “Maryland Dream Act”; newly passed legislation which grants in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens.  There is currently a petition drive to take the legislation to referendum.  Now, the Carroll County Commission has passed a resolution which supports the petition drive.

Are other local governments going to join in the fight to keep in-state tuition for LEGAL residents?
