Am I The Only One That Gets It With Tiger Woods?

No matter where you go looking at sports information, Tiger Woods is the front runner in the attention department.

So many articles are talking about his horrible playing lately, yet do they really get it?

The guy screwed up, we get that. However, do you really believe this guy all of a sudden, born with a God given gift/talent to do something no other human being can do is actually that bad?

Look, IMHO, the guy is playing a role, he has to. He has to get the viewing public to think that he is actually human, (so to speak). Sorry Folks, I played Professional Pool, I know what its like to have one of these God given gifts, YOU NEVER LOSE IT.

Tiger may have hit rock bottom but the forgiving general viewer has not. So drag Tiger down to the lowest level. Let other players brag about how they once beat the famous Tiger Woods. Then come back with a BANG like, (supposedly) never seen before.

Don't you worry Folks, you mark my words, Tiger Woods will soon be back to his normal self. Oh, you might want to think about the FACT that while he's going through a divorce that will clearly cost him millions of dollars, all of a sudden, he can't play any more. He's NOT capable of earning what he used to.

Yeah, Tiger is playing a role right now, nothing more, nothing less. Why can't the rest of America see it for what it really is?

Fruit Growing on the Eastern Shore

The first fruit grown and sold commercially on the Eastern Shore was the peach. Peach trees were prolific around the Shore and spawned some companies that existed for a hundred years. Two of these were Harrison’s in Berlin and Allen’s in Salisbury. The box pictured above was patented in 1871 in Philadelphia. It held brass tokens on the spindles in different denominations denoting the quantity of peaches picked. Each denomination was of a different shape for two reasons. The first was that most of the pickers could not read so they had to remember what shape denoted each quantity. The second was to secure the tokens since a lot of people didn’t have pockets or, if they did, they might have had holes in them. Since the tokens represented money to them for their labor, it was very important not to lose them. These “field cash registers” and peaches went by the wayside during the 1890’s when the peach blight devastated the industry and gave way to another.

It was around this time that strawberries became the major fruit crop. Practically every farm had a portion of their holdings in strawberries. The pickers were paid by cardboard tickets called “chits”. It seems every farm on the Eastern Shore is represented by these cardboard chits. The only place that used brass tokens for picking strawberries was the west side of Wicomico County. There are examples of cardboard chits, but the majority are brass. Some growers had many denominations. I have some as high as 100. The reason for this is economics. The soil on the west side of the county is conducive to strawberries becoming ripe two weeks before anywhere else. This gave the growers a tremendous advantage over other growers with the lucrative markets in the cities. They could charge whatever they wanted for about two weeks because they were the only game in town, so to speak. This allowed the growers to buy the brass tokens. The tokens also wore better than the cardboard, but I suspect that the ego factor of having brass tokens figured largely in their decision. Not many strawberries come from the west side any more, but, if you are lucky enough to get some, they are the finest strawberries in the world, red all the way through and have a taste to die for.

I bought some this year that the seller claimed were “organically grown”. They were a far cry from the naturally grown berries I remember. The years I worked in Nanticoke are fondly remembered by the delicious strawberries I brought home. I always had to buy two quarts to get one home. The smell and taste took possession of me, and I simply couldn’t resist eating one – and then another, etc..

Allen’s entered the strawberry business in a different way. They sold strawberry plants all over the country from their catalog. One of their catalogs from 1915 is pictured above. The extensive land that formerly held peach trees and then grew strawberry plants is now the land that Salisbury University resides upon.

Muslim-in-Chief Backs Ground Zero Mosque At White House Islamic Dinner

Speaking at a White House dinner celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, President Barack Obama on Friday forcefully endorsed building a mosque near ground zero saying the country's founding principles demanded no less. He was immediately blasted by Republican Rep. Peter King, who called it “insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero.”

"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation.

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."

Obama made the comments at an annual dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Lesbian Cadet Quits West Point, Cites 'Don't Ask' Policy

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — A lesbian cadet asked Monday to resign from the U.S. Military Academy because she no longer can lie about her sexuality and was troubled by the anti-gay attitudes of some around her.

Cadet Katherine Miller of Findlay, Ohio, also said she wants to fight for repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law, a subject she was studying and writing about as a sociology major at West Point.

"I intend for my resignation to offer a concrete example of the consequences of a failed law and social policy," she wrote in her resignation letter, referring to the law against gays serving openly in the military.

Cadet Miller wrote proudly of her accomplishments as a student, athlete and soldier and said that she had not been pressured by anyone to resign. But she wrote of being "coerced into ignoring derogatory comments towards homosexuals for fear of being alienated for my viewpoint" and of enduring "sexual harassment for fear of being accused as a lesbian."
(Editor's note: Cadet Miller is ranked 9th in her class of over 1100 West Point cadets. She has been accepted at Yale University for the upcoming semester.)

In the letter, she said she fabricated a heterosexual dating history to share with any fellow cadets who asked.

"In short, I have lied to my classmates and compromised my integrity and identity by adhering to existing military policy," she said.

Russia's Loading Of Nuke Fuel Into Iran Plant Means Aug. 21 Deadline For Israeli Attack

News that Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran's Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively "immune" to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton.

Once the fuel rods are loaded, Bolton told Fox News on Friday afternoon, "it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf."

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin declared in March that Russia would start the Bushehr reactor this summer. But the announcement from a spokesman for Russia's state atomic agency to Reuters Friday sent international diplomats scrambling to head off a crisis.

The story immediately became front-page news in Israel, which has laid precise plans to carry out an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities while going along with President Obama's plans to use international sanctions and diplomatic persuasion to convince Iran's clerics not to go nuclear.

Bolton made it clear that it is widely assumed that any Israeli attack on the Bushehr reactor must take place before the reactor is loaded with fuel rods.

"If they're going to do it that's the window that they have," Bolton declared. "Otherwise as I said before, once the rods are in the reactor, if you attack the reactor you're going to open it up and radiation will escape at least into the atmosphere and possibly into the waters of the Persian Gulf.

Bolton cited the 1981 Israeli attack on Saddam Hussein's Osirak reactor outside Baghdad and the September 2007 Israeli attack on a North Korean reactor being built in Syria. Both of those strikes came before fuel rods were loaded into those reactors.

"So if it's going to happen in Bushehr it has to happen before the fuel rods go in," Bolton said.

UPCOMING STATE TOUR ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION WITH SHERIFF CHUCK JENKINS

Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Brian Murphy and Frederick Sheriff Chuck Jenkins Announce Statewide Tour to Discuss Illegal Immigration

Crofton, Maryland
-- Today, Brian Murphy, Republican Candidate for Governor of Maryland, and Maryland illegal immigration stalwart, Frederick Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, announced their plans to conduct a statewide, townhall-style tour to address illegal immigration in Maryland.

Sheriff Jenkins has thrown his support behind Brian Murphy over primary opponent, Bob Ehrlich, because of Murphy’s commitment to curb illegal immigration when elected Governor. Murphy is the only candidate for Governor to support Arizona's immigration law, known as SB 1070, in Maryland, and program 287(g), currently implemented by Jenkins.

"As Governor, I will be Maryland's Chief Executive Officer and Maryland's Chief Law Enforcement Officer. And I will never shy away from either obligation. Maryland needs a Governor who is committed to protecting Maryland citizens, and who will enforce the law," said Murphy.

"Chuck has taken leadership in addressing illegal immigration in Maryland. Under my administration, Chuck's participation in 287(g) will be emulated across the state. I look forward to working together as we propose solutions to our shared problems," said Murphy.

“[Through our participation in 287(g)] we have taken over 650 criminals off the street of Frederick County. They have committed crimes, and they are in this country illegally,” said Jenkins. “Brian has my full support. During Bob Ehrlich’s four years as Governor, he did not address illegal immigration.”

All voters are welcome to come and hear Murphy and Jenkins discuss this important issue facing Maryland. The first meeting will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:00pm, at the American Legion located at 1450 Taney Avenue, Frederick, MD 21702-4336.

A future announcement will be forthcoming about the next set of meetings, dates and location that will follow Frederick’s townhall meeting.

Cove Road

Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., Seeking a Longer-Term Solution, Withdraws Cove Road Resolution From August 17th Council Agenda

President and Members
Wicomico County Council

Dear Council Members:

As you know, there has been some serious concern expressed in recent weeks about conditions at the county beach off of Cove Road, not the least of which involves the parking accommodations there. When the Westside Volunteer Fire Company alerted us to the fact that emergency vehicles could not reach the parking lot at the beach when vehicles were parked on both sides of the road, the county prohibited parking on
the south side of Cove Road.

More recently, I have been contacted by a number of residents of the area suggesting that both sides of the road should be closed to parking as the beach area cannot comfortably accommodate the additional traffic. After hearing from law enforcement and fire services, I proposed to the county council that parking indeed be eliminated on the north side of Cove Road as well. However, over the past two weeks, we have seen that the matter may be a bit more complicated and deserving of additional study and input before moving ahead to further limit parking.

After two well-attended community gatherings held in the last 10 days, I am persuaded that the resolution closing parking on the north side of Cove Road should be withdrawn for the time being. I offer the following for your consideration:

• Fire Chief Don Messick has assured me that emergency vehicles can access the parking lot and beach area with parking allowed on one side of the road.
• The summer season is drawing to a close and the causes for concern should diminish soon.
• The county will provide additional security over the Labor Day week-end via Park Police and I will ask the Sheriff’s Department for additional attention over the last few weeks of summer.
• I have instructed Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, Gary Mackes, to conduct an in-depth evaluation of the county facility on Cove Road to determine what improvements are needed to make the beach an attractive and enjoyable resource not just for the local community but for the county at large. He will report his findings to me by the first of November. Believing that any solution requires
the direct involvement of those most affected, I shall invite four members of the local community to meet with us as we develop our plan.
• We shall ask that the Department of Natural Resources increase enforcement of the regulations regarding jet skis in the swimming area. Finally, I also plan to ask Acting Public Works Director John Redden to determine if the edges of the road can be improved so that parked vehicles will intrude less into the paved portion of the road.

Accordingly, in light of our plan to work with the community to find a lasting and equitable solution to the concerns recently expressed, I ask that Resolution 115-2010, prohibiting parking of motor vehicles on the north side of Cove Road be withdrawn from the County Council’s agenda for the meeting scheduled for August 17, 2010.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Richard M. Pollitt, Jr.
County Executive

Wargotz: Latest Economic Forecast Show Mikulski's Failures

Annapolis - Today, Commissioner Eric Wargotz M.D., a candidate for the United States Senate, released the following statement on the latest poor economic forecast. The Federal Open Market Committee anticipates economic growth to be weaker than predicted.

"Mikulski and I have a fundamentally different approach to creating jobs. I believe we can't spend our way to economic prosperity, she believes we can. I believe we must lower taxes to stimulate growth, she believes in raising taxes. I believe the private sector is the economic engine driving our economy, she believes it is the government. The high unemployment rate and lack of economic growth shows that Mikulski's philosophy fails. The so-called "Stimulus Bill" has done nothing to stimulate the economy and has only made the economic outlook of future generations worse because of the massive increase in federal debt. I am ready to provide new leadership in Washington that will create jobs and get our economy moving forward."
