Could WBOC Survive Without Salisbury News Any More?

One look at tonight's news on WBOC will clearly tell you the answer is, NO. Someone just called and told me they're even going LIVE at 6 PM from the old Fire Station. They also covered the Perdue story I published today as well. It wasn't news until SBYNews exposed it. Oh, turns out I was right. 140 jobs will be going to Delaware and will NOT be returning. So the Mayor can claim they're doing renovations all he wants, Salisbury/Wicomico County just LOST 100+ jobs AGAIN.

More Corporate Welfare from Salisbury

As Salisbury taxpayers face crime, an economy that continues to decline, and a city government that will soon be demanding yet another tax increase, tax dollars will again subsidize one business venture while harming others.  What am I talking about?  The reinvigorated Barrie Comegys council’s decision to move forward with selling the old Station 16 to local developer Palmer Gillis for $100,000.

The proposal is a simple one.  The city will sell a property appraised for more than $700,000 to Gillis for less than 15 cents on the dollar.  Gillis proposes to put apartments up top and lease the ground floor out to a unit of UMES’s school of Hotel / Restaurant management.  Of course, this begs the question as to whether the city of Salisbury (and Wicomico County) will be able to collect property taxes on the property because UMES will be using the building.

I bear no malice towards Mr. Gillis.  I certainly have none towards UMES.  I can’t blame Gillis for attempting to get a sweet deal from the city.  No – the problem lies with a council and mayor who are willing to sell a building for cents on the dollar knowing that the property will be used to compete against locally owned restaurants.  Why should the city’s taxpayers subsidize one business to compete against businesses which already exist and add to the city’s tax base and the local economy?

To add insult to injury, we need to think back a few years.  SbyNEWS publisher Joe Albero offered to purchase that same building from the city for $250,000 – CASH.  Councilman Gary Comegys was caught on tape stating that he would never allow Albero to purchase the building.  Given that the cost to Salisbury’s citizens will be AT LEAST $150,000 in lost revenue to the city treasury, we should be glad that an election is just around the corner.  Sadly, that election isn’t soon enough.  It appears that Salisbury citizens will be forced to pay for (at least) this folly before the Louise Smiths and Gary Comegyses of the world are sent packing to a generous retirement – again at taxpayer expense.

Update On Guerrero Fight In Atlantic City

Team Guerrero would like to inform all our media friends of a change in opponents at the Nov 20th fight in Atlantic City. Because of factors beyond our control, a different opponent and one with much more experience will be in the opposite corner. Fernando Guerrero will now face a Saul Durran, 37-17 with 2 draws. Durran, fighting out of Mexico,  has stopped 30 fighters in his 37 victories. Among his opposition is are greats like Jose Luis Castillo and Hector Camacho. Durran presents a different style for Fernando to work against, and less time for Fernando to prepare for the more experienced Durran. "Fernando's style is one that doesn't need to change a lot in this new match-up. The foundation he has and the skills he has developed, make it easy to do the tweaking necessary to take care of the business at hand.  The bottom line is, Fernando is ready" said co-trainer and manager Hal Chernoff.

A win this Saturday night in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall on the under-card of the Middleweight World Title fight between Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams will give Guerrero some very good exposure to the a new market and one only a few hours from his home town. "I am hopeful that Atlantic City will embrace him as they have done with other fighters like Kelly Pavlic and Arturo Gatti, but I am still working to bring him back home if the opportunity presents itself", said Chernoff.

Throw The Bums Out!

Gary Comegys, Louise Smith and Shanie Shields have moved forward with the sale of the old Fire Station 16 for pennies on the dollar and they also agreed to purchase a $900,000.00 Fire Boat, which is completely unnecessary.

Shanie Shields became a real estate expert by stating, "if you leave a large building empty, it will start to deteriorate in value." NOT TRUE. Many of the buildings on the Downtown Plaza were purchased for low prices and are far more valuable today then they were back when they were purchased and many sit empty. In time, when we get the right kind of leadership on the Council the Downtown will come back to life. I should add, many property owners are subjected to buildings sitting empty because of the economy. Many of us would love to sell them but cannot afford to take a loss from an apraised value of $750,000.00+ down to $150,000.00. How convenient for the City Council to do such a thing.

However, while we continue to sell off properties worthy of much more money, it drives the value of those properties way down and they're destroying the economy and market even more. To add salt to that wound, why not sell it to someone who will compete with other honorable business men and women who have put everything they own on the line to survive in the restaurant business and hurt them too.

Shanie, Louise and Gary are no good for the City of Salisbury and shame on all of you who voted these people into Office. The bums need to go.

Now let's talk about the new Fire Boat. Gordy and Hoppes claim the maintenance costs will be around $12,000.00 a year. OK Boat owners, its time for YOU to chime in. Does a $900,000.00 vessel only cost $12,000.00 a year to maintain? My guess is that the City purchased a three year extended warranty but they claim the manufacturer threw it into the deal for $900,000.00. The first three years shouldn't really require a lot of maintenance but soon after that is when the costs start rising.

So property values are being driven down by the City Council and purchases of new buildings and things like a $900,000.00 Fire Boat continue to raise taxes and or you get less services, (no roads being paved, as an example). Salisbury is quickly becoming a dump but the elite enjoy the benefits of reduced values.

All I can say is, Campbell and Cohen better have darned good excuses for not being at yesterday's meeting that moved things forward. The City Council is all about wants, not needs. The City of Salisbury does not NEED to sell the old Fire Station and the City of Salisbury does not NEED a new $900,000.00 Fire Boat. Mayor Ireton believes that since the grant money to purchase the Boat is coming from Homeland Security, it's not our money, so why not. I have personally heard him say this about many different projects. Democrats do not seem to understand that it still costs each and every one of us money. The more we continue to purchase items like this, the more dependent we become to our Government.

Throw The Bums Out!

Today's Survey Question

Do You Support The City Council Selling Off Station 16 For Pennies On The Dollar?

A Letter To The Editor

Joe, do you have any idea who Aloha Properties is?  Plus...if Gary seriously believes this boat won't cost us anything he's seriously wrong and hasn't done his homework!

Any kind of grant funding comes from "we the people".  That money is printed up just because it's Grant money.  I can't wait for the next election so him and Smith will be history (I hope) but sadly it'll be too late for our Fire House.  This makes me so sad.  I grew up in that building.  I know the little hiding places where I could fit and others couldn't.  I saw Miss Salisbury pageants upstairs in that building.  That building is like a member of the family, not only to me but to lots of people.  I tried, I sent emails and made calls.  This is one of those times where the citizens didn't matter.  It's a sad day for Salisbury.  I will NEVER EVER attend anything in that building.  I will go to the other places downtown now, more than ever.

COUNTY SCORES HIGH MARKS FROM WALL STREET'S ANNUAL EVALUATION

Wicomico County received a well-earned vote of confidence from the three New York bond rating agencies this week as Wall Street published the annual assessments of the financial health of the county's government.  Last month, County Executive Rick Pollitt delivered formal presentations to the agencies in anticipation of selling bonds to fund this year's capital projects.  The county received scores of Aa3 from Moody's Investors Service and AA-/stable ratings from Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor's.  Despite the challenges presented by current economic conditions, the scores remained constant after two consecutive ratings improvements in Pollitt's first two years in office.

Commenting on the news from New York, Pollitt said that, “These are strong ratings. Our citizens should be pleased that the county's fiscal credibility has not weakened despite substantial declines in revenue."  Acknowledging the county's property tax revenue cap, Fitch Ratings stated that a "Key rating driver"…for the county was its… "ability to respond to likely pressure on the two primary sources of revenue, property and income taxes, resulting from operating constraints attributable to a charter-imposed property tax revenue limit and the broader recessionary environment.”

Pollitt added, “During the recent campaign, my challenger stated that the county’s strong fiscal grades from Wall Street were a result of the Revenue Cap. However, the agencies have made it clear that our success has actually come in spite of the Revenue Cap. The following is from Moody’s Report:

'RECENTLY HEALTHY FINANCIAL OPERATIONS MAY BE CONSTRAINED BY TAX REVENUE LIMITATIONS
Wicomico County has maintained a healthy financial position during recent years despite the impact of property tax revenue constraints, supported by proactive management and conservative fiscal policies and practices.”

Mr. Pollitt also noted that the Fitch Report said that Wicomico County is in a “Good financial position with strong general fund reserves even after recent drawdowns due to economic conditions and a property tax limitation imposed by county charter. The stable outlook reflects S & P’s expectations of continued growth and diversity in the economic base. It also reflects the expectation that the county will continue to effectively manage its budget in response to economic conditions and maintain its strong financial position.”

Pollitt noted that he expects the strong bond ratings to lead to substantial savings in interest payments as the county moves forward with construction projects at Bennett Middle School, Wor-Wic Community College and Arthur Perdue Stadium.

Watch The Amazing Fed Turn A Dollar Into A Dime!

Confronted with housewives who were descending upon ’70s supermarkets to protest prices, Milton Friedman wrote, “Housewives have a justifiable complaint. But they should complain to Washington where inflation is produced, not to the supermarket where inflation is delivered.”

A housewife from Alaska is heeding the New Jersey economist’s advice.

“All this pump priming will come at a serious price,” Sarah Palin explained in Phoenix last week. “And I mean that literally: Everyone who ever goes out shopping for groceries knows that prices have risen significantly over the past year or so. Pump priming would push them even higher.” Palin refers to the decision by the Federal Reserve to print $600 billion (money does, in fact, grow on trees for central bankers) and inject it into the economy primarily through the purchase of Treasury securities.

After their stimulus attempt put fiscal policy out of balance through trillion-dollar-plus deficits, the Obama administration’s unwelcome encore seeks an economic quick fix from a monetary policy stimulus. Like the drunken-sailor spending spree, the mad-hatter print-your-way-to-prosperity plan is likely to unleash negative, unintended consequences without a thriving economy to show for it. Specifically, flooding the market with dollars will devalue the money in your pocket, raise taxes without the approval of Congress through bracket creep, and reinforce a culture that encourages profligacy and discourages savings.

Inflation is a euphemism for dishonest currency. If your butcher manipulated weights and your bartender manipulated measures the way governments manipulate currency, the government would put them in jail.

Memo To House GOP: Get A Grip On The EPA

Getting a grip on the Environmental Protection Agency must be at the top of the upcoming Republican-controlled House’s “To Do” list.

Of immediate concern are the EPA rules for regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Unless stopped by a federal court, the Obama EPA will implement on Jan. 2 a flagrantly illegal scheme to regulate emissions from power plants and other large emitters. This enactment will kill jobs and raise the prices of energy, and thus of all good and services.

The Obama administration originally designed the scheme as a regulatory sword of Damocles to pressure Congress and industry into agreeing on a cap-and-trade framework.

But cap-and-trade reached its high-water mark in June 2009 when the House barely passed the controversial Waxman-Markey bill. Cap-and-trade’s prospects then deteriorated quite rapidly, placing the Obama administration in the position of having to make good on its threat to unleash the EPA’s carbon dogs on America.

The Obama EPA bootstrapped itself into the carbon regulation business with its December 2009 “endangerment finding,” decreeing that GHG emissions threaten the public welfare. The EPA based its finding on a 2007 report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—a report that, while always controversial, came under even more fire as a result of the November 2009 Climategate scandal.

Already on shaky legal ground, the EPA ventured clearly into law-breaking territory with its June 2010 “tailoring rule.” Under the Clean Air Act, if the EPA regulates a “pollutant,” it must regulate all sources that emit as little as 100 tons per year.

Implementing this requirement for GHGs would put the EPA in the impossible position of having to regulate virtually every small business and multi-family residential complex—a total of more than 6.1 million sources nationwide. The EPA estimated it would require 1.4 billion work hours costing $63 billion over three years to accomplish that task.

Hamas Admires Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama’s tough stance towards Israel since he has taken office has apparently struck a chord with none other than Hamas.

A poster recently produced by the terrorist group and which is being sold in the Gaza Strip, depicts Obama wearing a kaffiyeh, the traditional Muslim head covering. The text under the photo reads in English: “Abu Hussain! Palestine loves you!!!” (Abu Hussain is the name for Obama which is commonly used by Hamas)

The text in the poster appeared last week on the front pages of several leading Arab daily publications. A report on the poster also appeared in The New York Post and was translated into Hebrew by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. The report in The Post  attributes Hamas’ admiration towards Obama as a result of his tendency to drop “hints that he means to be tough with Israel” which include “occasional statements about Jewish settlements.” The report also cautions that although Obama’s applying pressure on Israel may look good to Hamas, it may also reduce the chances of reaching an agreement on the creation of a Palestinian state.

Last week, it seemed as though Obama was indeed making efforts to reach out to the Muslim community. In a speech he gave last Wednesday during his official visit to Indonesia, Obama emphasized that the U.S. is not at war with Islam but acknowledged that it is hard to eradicate “years of mistrust” as he called it. He added that relations between the U.S. and Muslim communities “have frayed over many years” and said that he has “made it a priority to begin to repair these relations.”

DeMint: Earmark Vote Will Test Lawmakers' Grasp Of The Election

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said the vote on whether or not to ban earmarks will be the first test as to whether members fully grasp the lessons of the midterm elections.

The Republican Conference is scheduled to vote on the ban at their weekly meeting Tuesday.

"If we can't decide as a federal government that it's not our job to pave local parking lots and build local museums then we don't understand what constitutional limited government is," DeMint said at a Tea Party rally just outside the Capital Monday. "If the Senate Republicans fail to pass a ban on earmarks tomorrow, obviously they have not gotten the message."

The debate over the proposed ban, led by DeMint and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) has already exposed fissures among Republicans in the Senate.

DeMint hinted Monday that Republicans who aren't supportive of the ban could face trouble if they have to face voters in two years, but said he's confident the ban will win approval on Tuesday, led by the newly-elected crop of GOP Senators.

"2012 is going to make what just happened look small if we continue what we started," DeMint predicted.

Voters listed a reduction in spending as one of their top concerns this election cycle; several Republican candidates ran successful campaigns based on that issue.

Bowing To Tea Party Pressure, McConnell Backs Earmark Ban

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that he would join his fellow Republicans in opposing earmarks, bowing to pressure from tea party activists who see the special project funding as a prime example of out-of-control government spending.

Speaking from the Senate floor, the Kentucky senator said that, after discussing the issue with his constituents and fellow Republicans he supports the ban against earmarks.

"I know the good that has come from the projects I have helped support throughout my state. I don't apologize for them," McConnell said.

"But there is simply no doubt that the abuse of this practice has caused Americans to view it as a symbol of the waste and the out-of-control spending that every Republican in Washington is determined to fight," he said.

A little more than a week ago, McConnell questioned the value of banning earmarks, a way for lawmakers to use spending bills to funnel federal money to projects in their districts or states.

McConnell has requested $114 million worth of earmarks in spending bills, mostly for Kentucky, for this fiscal year, which Congress has yet to complete, according to the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste.

Senate Democrats have shown little support for an earmark moratorium. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye has said he supports greater transparency on earmarks but not a ban.

Inouye expressed disappointment in McConnell's statement, adding that it would weaken Congress' power over federal spending.

California Supreme Court Rules In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants OK

The California Supreme Court decided unanimously Monday that illegal immigrants may continue to be eligible for in-state tuition rates at the state's colleges and universities rather than pay the higher rates charged to those who live out of state.

In a ruling written by Justice Ming W. Chin, one of the panel's more conservative members, the state high court said a California law that guarantees the lower tuition for students who attend California high schools for at least three years and graduate does not conflict with a federal prohibition on giving illegal immigrants educational benefits based on residency.

California is one of several states that permit illegal immigrants to take advantage of lower college tuition for students who attend high school and graduate in state. About 25,000 illegal immigrants are estimated to receive in-state tuition rates in California.

A group fighting illegal immigration challenged the California law on behalf of U.S. citizens who pay the higher tuition as out-of-state students. The group won in lower court, and the state appealed.

The Auschwitz Album

The Only Surviving Album of Auschwitz

This is the story of a Hungarian Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz and found a coat belonging to a guard which she took to shield her from the cold immediately after her liberation.

In the pocket of this coat she found a photo album. It contained pictures of what went on in this extermination camp.

Imagine her reaction when she saw a picture of herself coming off of the train as well aspictures of her family who were already murdered.

This album at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem was donated by this woman in 1980 and will forever be displayed there.

When you have 5 minutes of peace and quiet in front of your computer, watch it and consider passing it around to people that you know so they can share it and know about it.

It is truly moving and important.

Did You Get Suckered By Delmarva Power's 'SmartMeter' Offer?

Energy police are about to invade your home with "smart meters," new electronic/Internet based devices that determine precisely how much energy you are using, Jerome Corsi's Red Alert reports.

While the devices are being sold as energy-saving tools, the technology also gives the energy police the ability to shut you off or charge you additional if you refuse to install energy saving measures demanded by green ideologues and enforced by utility companies doing their bidding, Corsi reported.

The California Public Utilities Commission, or CPUC, has given permission to deploy an Advanced Meter Infrastructure project that will upgrade both metering and communications software to install 5.1 million electricity meters and 4.2 million natural gas meters in homes in the Pacific Gas & Electricity in California.

Orlean Koehle, an active tea-party member and a member of the Sonoma County Republican Central Committee, has begun fighting back.

"What is a smart meter?" Koehle asks. "It is one that contains RF (radio frequency) so that it can be remotely controlled and read. No longer will a meter reader have to come to your home to read the meter. It will all be done remotely."

What is the concern about the energy police?

"When all is in place, the smart meter will not only keep track of how much electricity you are using, but it will be able to control, regulate, and ration your use of that electricity," she wrote. "If 'big brother' decides that you are using too much heat in the winter time, or too much air conditioning in the summer time, or using too much hot water in your showers or washing machine (even if you are willing to pay for that extra usage), the use of power will be automatically turned down."

Koehle's not only concerned that green bureaucrats want to impose their global warming agenda on a free marketplace, but that in the future no one will be able to avoid the coming ideologically driven intrusion into homes.

Pretty soon, Koehle warns, all appliances will be replaced with those containing RF chips.

3rd-Grade Business Expo
North Salisbury Elementary

The North Salisbury Elementary annual 3rd-Grade Business Expo will take place on Thursday, Nov. 18, with the first session at 9:30 a.m. and second session at 1 p.m. Students will be advertising and selling the goods or services they created and marketed during the Economy Unit. The children have gained background knowledge for their good or service by interviewing business people who have a business like theirs. They also surveyed potential customers to help fine tune their final good or service, learned about advertising best practices from Frank Hamilton of WBOC, and created a business plan to help find just the right price customers would be willing to pay. Students and visitors will buy with "Kinnamon Cash" (named for their Social Studies teacher) so that each student can calculate the net profit of the business after the Expo. 410-677-5807.
