Another Blow For Chance Of Health Compromise

GOP senator says proposals would reroute Medicare spending, limit choice

WASHINGTON
- A leading GOP negotiator on health care struck a further blow to fading chances of a bipartisan compromise by saying Democratic proposals would restrict medical choices and make the country's "finances sicker without saving you money."

The criticism from Sen. Michael Enzi, R-Wyo., echoed that of many opponents of the Democratic plans under consideration in Congress. But Enzi's judgment was especially noteworthy because he is one of only three Republicans who have been willing to consider a bipartisan bill in the Senate.

In the Republicans' weekly radio and Internet address on Saturday, Enzi said any health care legislation must lower medical costs for Americans without increasing deficits and the national debt.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER

Main St. Icon

There are two artifacts from Main St. in Salisbury that evoke memories of a bygone era. One is the “Big Shoe” that graced the front of E. Homer White’s shoe store and is now on display through the end of September at the Ward Museum courtesy of the Wicomico Historical Society and the Nabb Center. In fact, the history of Salisbury from 1609-1909 is featured in the great display put on by the Nabb Center

The other is the Peanut Roaster of Tom Cinno. The artifact is currently stored at the Heritage Center, but might soon reside in the Nabb Center’s permanent exhibit on Salisbury history.

The above pictures show Tom Cinno’s grandson, also named Tom, outside the confectionery at 243 Main St. (old address – presently 229-231A W. Main St.). The peanut roaster is clearly visible in the picture and can be compared with the picture of the roaster as it looks now. The roaster was rolled out in front of the confectionery every day and not around town as some people thought. Behind the current false front on the building is a gas hook-up for the roaster. The bags of hot roasted peanuts were a tradition on Main St. from the 1920’s through WWII. On chilly winter evenings, downtown shoppers would buy two bags and use them to warm their hands in their pockets. Many a bag was sold to the attendees of the old Ulman Theater across the street. In those days the city’s street sweeper was a man with a push cart and broom. He swept up Main St. and many a peanut shell.

Tom Cinno changed his name to Cinno when he came to America in the early part of the Twentieth Century. The family name was Cimino (pronounced “cha mino”) but he Americanized it as did a lot of early immigrants. I have also heard the story from his granddaughter that his peanut bags were printed “Cimino’s Peanuts” and that the company from which he obtained the bags misprinted an order to read “Cinno’s Peanuts”. He couldn’t afford to throw the bags away and order more, so he used them. After that he was known as Tom Cinno. Every reference I can find refers to him as Tom Cinno. The first listing is the Salisbury City Directory of 1921. I was intrigued by this because I knew his son, Sam, and his two grandchildren. His grandson, also Tom, was born in the 1930’s and I always knew him as Tom Cinno. However, his sister, Nona, was a year ahead of me at St. Francis and I always knew her as Nona Cimino. Tom now goes by the name on his birth certificate – Tom Cimino.

Another fascinating bit of information is the fact that when he came over from Italy, he came with his best friend, Johnny Testa. They both worked in Louisiana, Chicago and Baltimore to get enough money to bring their families over. They finally settled in Salisbury. Johnny’s son was also named Johnny and, along with Sam Cerniglia started what was to become the premier restaurant in Salisbury for many years – Johnny’s and Sammy’s.

To ALL 535 Voting Members Of The Legislature

It is now official: You are all morons.

The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775 - you have had 234 years to get it right; it is broke.

Social Security was established in 1935 - you have had 74 years to get it right; it is broke.
Fannie Mae was established in 1938 - you have had 71 years to get it right; it is broke..

War on Poverty started in 1964 - you have had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to "the poor"; it hasn't worked.

Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965 - you've had 44 years to get it right; they're broke

Freddie Mac was established in 1970 - you have had 39 years to get it right; it is broke

Trillions of dollars in the massive political payoff called the TARP bill of 2009 shows NO sign of working.

And finally to set a new record:

"Cash for Clunkers" was established in 2009 and went broke in 2009! It took good dependable cars ( that were the best some people could afford ) replaced them with high priced ( people who couldn't afford to are now making payments ) mostly Japanese models so a good percentage of the profits, from the sales, went out of the country. And lastly, the American taxpayers are now going to be dinged
> with paying for yet 3 billion more dollars of our governments experiments to
make our wallets even thinner.

So with a perfect 100% failure rate and a record that proves that "services" you shove down our throats are failing faster and faster, you want Americans to believe you can be trusted with a government-run health care system? 15% of our economy? Are you crazy?
Truly, the inmates are running the asylum! And what does this say about voters who put such pond scum in office? Maybe we need to let others in on this brilliant record before 2010 and just vote against incumbents.

Spending Spree Sacrifices State Workers

Spending Spree Sacrifices State Workers

Annapolis –
Maryland’s Democrat Governor, Martin O’Malley, announced dramatic reductions in his budget this week and he still needs to cut at least another $1.2 billion. Hardest hit so far, are State workers and their families, hundreds of whom will have lost their jobs in these tough economic times.

“He blew through former Republican Governor Robert Erhlich’s $1.5 billion dollar surplus in a post-election spending spree; then immediately raised taxes in a Special Legislative Session so that he could spend $1.2 billion more,” said Dr. Jim Pelura, Chairman of the MDGOP. “And if you thought the Democrats were only going to tax the rich to pay for their excess, think again.”

At the August 26th meeting of the Board of Public Works, Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley announced economic furloughs for non-24/7 State employees (approximately 67,000 of Maryland’s 80,000 dedicated work force.)

Those earning less than $40,000 will be required to take five-day temporary salary reduction days. The highest paid employees, defined by Governor O’Malley as those making more than $40,000, will be required to lose up to two weeks of pay. "Balancing the State budget on the backs of State employees, making as little as $40,000 per year, is no way to run a State," said Dr. Pelura. “The plan which Governor O’Malley calls his ‘flexible progressive furlough’ actually means his furloughs for State employees will get progressively worse.” Still projected for FY 2011 is a budget shortfall in excess of one billion more dollars.

"The Governor's efforts to date to balance the State budget have been short-sighted, inadequate and unbalanced," commented Delegate Steve Schuh of Anne Arundel County. "His plan relies on accounting gimmicks and other one-time fixes, amounts to only a small fraction of the nearly $2.5 billion fundamental imbalance in the budget and places the burden far too heavily on State employees and their families.”

Today's Comedy

I put some turnips, my eleven-year-old son's least-favorite vegetable, on his dinner plate and instructed him to eat everything. He cleaned his plate, except for the turnip.

I pointed out to him that if he'd eaten it earlier, he wouldn't have been left with its taste in his mouth at the end of the meal.

Thoughtfully, he replied, "I guess I was just trying to delay the inedible."

Our manager at the restaurant where I worked was a friendly, jovial man, but there was one subject you didn't dare discuss in front of him: his height, or rather, his lack of it. He was very short and apparently sensitive about the subject.

One day he stormed through the kitchen doors and announced angrily, "Someone just picked my pocket!"

Everyone was speechless, except for one waitress who couldn't help herself as she blurted out,
"How could anyone stoop so low?"

A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."

And for plenty of good reasons, since:

1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. it is a major component in acid rain
3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. accidental inhalation can kill you
5. it contributes to erosion
6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.

Forty-three (43) said yes, six (6) were undecided, and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.

The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"

He feels the conclusion is obvious.

Working at an airline ticket counter, I pulled up a passenger's reservation that showed his name as "Cole, Pheven."

"I'd like to be certain our information is correct," I said to him. "What is your first name?"

"It's Stephen," he replied. "I hope the reservation agent got it right. I told him it's spelled with a ph."

The judge had not yet put in an appearance in the San Diego traffic court. When the bailiff entered the courtroom, he sensed the nervousness of the traffic offenders awaiting their ordeal.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," he said. "Welcome to 'What's My Fine?'"

Sign in a store window:

"We would rather do business with 1,000 Al Qaeda Terrorists than one single American."

This sign was prominently displayed in the window of a business in Philadelphia.

You are probably outraged at the thought of such an inflammatory statement. But we pride ourselves on being a society that holds Freedom of Speech as perhaps our greatest liberty. And after all, it IS just a sign. You may ask what kind of business would dare post such a sign?

Answer: A Funeral Home

(Who said morticians have no sense of humor?)

The elderly priest, speaking to the younger priest, said, "It was a good idea to replace the first four pews with plush bucket theater seats. It worked like a charm.

The front of the church always fills first now." The young priest nodded, and the old priest continued, "And you told me adding a little more beat to the music would bring young people back to church, so I supported you when you brought in that rock 'n' roll gospel choir. Now our services are consistently packed to the balcony."

"Thank you, Father," answered the young priest. "I am pleased that you are open to the new ideas of youth."

"All of these ideas have been well and good," said the elderly priest, "but I'm afraid you've gone too far with the drive-thru confessional."

"But, Father," protested the young priest, "my confessions and the donations have nearly doubled since I began that!"

"Yes," replied the elderly priest, "and I appreciate that.
But the flashing neon sign, 'Toot 'n Tell or Go to Hell,' cannot stay on the church roof."

Donna was the organist for our wedding. She related a story to us about a previous wedding in which she and her husband Burk were participating, with her on organ and him singing.
During rehearsal the audio man at the church asked them to sing and play so that he could adjust volumes. They did not have the wedding music with them, so they began to perform one of the hymns they had practiced for church the previous week, "He Touched Me."

Just as they started, the preacher walked in and stopped, looking very surprised. He had never, ever heard that song chosen for a wedding before. The opening line of the hymn:
"Shackled by a heavy burden..."

My great-grandson, age 5, spends a lot of time with us on our small farm. His big delight is finding the new "babies," whether they be birds or mammals. He also knows the rule, "New babies cannot be petted." He usually waits impatiently until the new babies have grown for a week or so and then he can pet them.

Recently our neighbors brought home their firstborn, a beautiful little boy. When I told my great-grandson they had a new baby, he immediately began to ask to go visit them.
The second day, very early in the morning, he began to ask to go visit again. I explained to him that it was too early to visit, and that the baby was probably still sleeping.
Hands on his hips and head cocked to one side, he informed me, "But Grandma! I don't want to pet him; I just want to look at him."

Health Care In England

President Obama wants to provide you a national healthcare system very similar to that in Great Britain. After all, the World Health Organization (of the United Nations) rates their system above yours. Aren't you curious to see what the British write about their own medical care. The links below will expose you to some articles that have appeared in the British Broadcasting Company, Great Britain's primary news organization.
