Grey Seal Found Big Mill Pond Rd, Pocomoke, Maryland

A young Male Grey seal was found on the side of Big Mill Pond road in Worcester County last night around 8pm. Worcester County deputies watched over the animal last night to insure its safety.

This morning members of the National Aquarium in Baltimore’s Marine Animal Rescue program recovered the animal, transported him to Assateague Island State Park and released him safely back into the Atlantic Ocean.

The area the seal was found is southeast of Pocomoke and is near the state line of Maryland and Virginia. The seal must have made his way from the ocean into the Chincoteague Bay and up the Swan Gut creek to where he got stuck after the water resided.

Jennifer Dittmar, a rescue team member, said the seal was a little thin but seemed to be healthy.

Justice's Wife Launches 'Tea Party' Group

As Virginia Thomas tells it in her soft-spoken, Midwestern cadence, the story of her involvement in the "tea party" movement is the tale of an average citizen in action.

"I am an ordinary citizen from Omaha, Neb., who just may have the chance to preserve liberty along with you and other people like you," she said at a recent panel discussion with tea party leaders in Washington. Thomas went on to count herself among those energized into action by President Obama's "hard-left agenda."

But Thomas is no ordinary activist. She is the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and she has launched a tea-party-linked group that could test the traditional notions of political impartiality for the court.

In January, Virginia Thomas created Liberty Central Inc, a nonprofit lobbying group whose website will organize activism around a set of conservative "core principles," she said.

WICOMICO YOUTH & CIVIC CENTER CLOSED ON MARCH 22ND

On March 22, 2010, the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center will be closed for an inspection of its electrical system and for any maintenance work required as a result of that inspection. Part of the procedure involves a complete shutdown of the building’s electric power. The State of Maryland requires this inspection prior to the Civic Center’s use of a new emergency generator. The generator is designed to produce sufficient electric power at the WY&CC during emergencies.

The WY&CC offices and box office will be closed on March 22nd. Tickets for commercial events will still be available on-line at www.wicomicociviccenter.org.

Health Care 'Home Visitation' Comes To Your House!

It’s all supposed to be voluntary, those “home visits” that are tucked into the mammoth ObamaCare bill. If you have a strong stomach, and stronger bottom, you can find home visitation on pages 568-595. That’s Section 2951 of H.R. 3590, the Senate bill that Harry Reid brought down the chimney on Christmas Eve.

All voluntary, they say, but once you “volunteer” to have the oh-so-helpful folks from Social Services come in to help with your newborns, or with a number of other specified issues, will you ever be able to get rid of them?

The bill provides for federal funding and supervision for this vast expansion of government intrusion into family life. This is the Nanny State on steroids.

Is your family being “targeted” for such home visitations? Let’s see if you fit into one of these very broad categories:

* Families where Mom is not yet 21. (No mention here whether she is married or not.)
* Families where someone is a tobacco user. (Does this include the White House? Watch out, Sasha and Malia!) Does Grandpa, whom you love and have taken in, enjoy his after-dinner pipe?
* Families where children have low student achievement, developmental delays, or disabilities.

As if that list was not wide-ranging enough, here’s the net that can encompass tens of millions:

*Families with individuals who are serving or formerly served in the armed forces, including such families that have members of the armed forces who have had multiple deployments outside the United States.

Do you spank your children? You should know that HHS bureaucrats think you are an abuser.

Do you support the Second Amendment? How would you like HHS bureaucrats asking your children if you maintain firearms in the home for family protection?

Do you home school your kids? Take care. Members of Congress who have tried to abolish home schooling are big backers of this health care bill. Do you wonder why?

The White House is pulling out all the stops. One of their senior advisers told CNN’s Gloria Borger what President Obama’s people are telling wavering Democrats on Capitol Hill:

BORGER: Right. This isn't going to be subtle at all today. I think this is it. I was speaking with one senior White House adviser just before I came on the air, and he said, think of it this way. This is the last helicopter out of Saigon, OK?

Could anything be more bizarre? A senior member of the administration is comparing the President’s signature measure in Congress to the forced evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in South Vietnam in 1975.

Older Americans remember the shame and heartbreak of seeing thousands of America’s allies desperately clinging to U.S. Army helicopters as the North Vietnamese army closed in on South Vietnam’s capital city.

Rights or Wishes? The Plain, Unvarnished Facts

"For Congress to guarantee a right to health care, or any other good or service, whether a person can afford it or not, it must diminish someone else's rights, namely their rights to their earnings. The reason is that Congress has no resources of its very own.

Moreover, there is no Santa Claus, Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy giving them those resources.

The fact that government has no resources of its very own forces one to recognize that in order for government to give one American citizen a dollar, it must first, through intimidation, threats and coercion, confiscate that dollar from some other American.

If one person has a right to something he did not earn, of necessity it requires that another person not have a right to something that he did earn. To argue that people have a right that imposes obligations on another is an absurd concept.

A better term for new-fangled rights to health care, decent housing and food is wishes.

If we called them wishes, I would be in agreement with most other Americans for I, too, wish that everyone had adequate health care, decent housing and nutritious meals. However, if we called them human wishes, instead of human rights, there would be confusion and cognitive dissonance. The average American would cringe at the thought of government punishing one person because he refused to be pressed into making someone else's wish come true.

None of my argument is to argue against charity. Reaching into one's own pockets to assist his fellow man in need is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone else's pockets to do so is despicable and deserves condemnation."

Could Ehrlich ‘Fix’ The State And Supply A Positive Vision?

By Len LazarickLen@MarylandReporter.com

In the next few weeks, we expect to learn the answer to the question many began asking Bob Ehrlich nearly two years ago: Is he going to run for governor again?

It is clear that the Ehrlich “family” -- friends, staff and especially his wife Kendel -- is behind a rematch between him and Gov. Martin O’Malley. That was one of the factors he mentioned to me at a dinner in May 2008. But the key questions, he said then, were “Can I win and can I fix it?”

Ehrlich himself is the one holding back on the decision, calculating his chances against an incumbent Democratic governor in a heavily Democratic state. He’s made no secret that he’ll run if he thinks he can win.

But can he “fix” what he sees as the fiscal mess in Annapolis and the left-ward drift of the state? Can he and his backers be more than just the party of “no” and supply a “positive vision for Maryland,” as he advised other Republicans in October?

The next two years facing the governor elected in November will be even more daunting than what both O’Malley and Ehrlich faced in their first terms. Elected state leaders have pushed the most expensive long-term problems until after the election.

Next January, the revenue picture continues to look bleak, and all the easy budget cuts have been long done. The fiscal 2011 budget depends on a series one-time transfers of funds that may not be available again. As one legislative wag said of O’Malley, “He’s broken all the piggy banks.”

For the third year in a row, state employees will have their pay cut in the form of furloughs.

Administrators have asked lawmakers to stop cutting the staff piecemeal and to drop whole programs, rather than leaving them understaffed in many areas.

STATESTAT UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO PROTECT MARYLANDERS FROM SEX OFFENDERS

GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY RELEASES STATESTAT UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO PROTECT MARYLANDERS FROM SEX OFFENDERS

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 11, 2010)
– Governor Martin O’Malley released a StateStat update today on the State’s progress to protect Maryland families from sex offenders. In a video update available online, Governor O’Malley urged Maryland citizens to call on their legislators to approve legislation to require lifetime monitoring for convicted sex offenders, expand sex offender registration criteria, and align Maryland’s laws with federal child safety regulations.

“Our highest priority in the State of Maryland – and the most sacred priority of government at every level – is the public’s safety,” said Governor O’Malley. “In our State, we’re united by our belief in the dignity of every individual and our belief that there is no such thing as a spare Marylander. The loss of even one more innocent life is unacceptable. We can pass these important reforms, but we can’t do it alone.”

In the past three years, violent crime has been driven down to its lowest levels since 1987, including the steepest three-year reduction in homicides since the 1970s and a 46 percent reduction in juvenile homicides over the same period of time. The O’Malley-Brown Administration has set a goal of reducing violent crime against women and children 25 percent by 2012.

In 2007, Governor O’Malley signed Jessica’s law to protect Maryland families from violent sex offenders. The O’Malley-Brown Administration has championed the use of emerging innovative public safety technologies like clinical polygraph examinations, computer monitoring, and GPS tracking, which is currently being used to track 231 sex offenders. Governor O’Malley also dedicated the necessary resources three years ago to close an inherited backlog of 24,000 unanalyzed and 15,000 uncollected DNA samples, and as a result the State has used DNA evidence to arrest 106 sex offenders.

Initiatives introduced this legislative session include proposals to:

Require the most serious sex offenders to be monitored by law enforcement for life, aligning Maryland with 24 other states which currently have some sort of lifetime supervision law on the books.

Align Maryland’s sex offender laws with federal notification and registration standards for sex offenders, ensuring Maryland does not become a safe haven for offenders seeking less stringent registration requirements.

Classify persons convicted of child pornography and indecent exposure to minors as sex offenders, and require that they register as such.

Require more employees at facilities that care for or supervise children to undergo criminal background checks; and
Reform the Maryland Sexual Offender Advisory Board so its members will be required to have relevant experience and expertise, and so the Board’s charge will be targeted and focused on important priorities like developing risk-assessment criteria for the supervision of offenders.

MARYLAND RECEIVES MORE THAN $2.4 MILLION THROUGH FEDERAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 15, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that Maryland will receive $2,474,638 under the federal STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program. The program provides funds for Services, Training, Officers and Prosecutors (STOP) in implementing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

“One of our most solemn obligations as public servants is the safety of the citizens we serve,” said Governor O’Malley. “Last year, 53 individuals died as a result of domestic violence in Maryland and, of those, 27 were killed with a firearm. Programs funded through the STOP program help us ensure that women throughout Maryland feel safe and secure. I want to thank Senator Barbara Mikulski and the leaders of our federal delegation for their work in securing these funds.”

“Domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking are horrific problems affecting thousands of Marylanders and millions of individuals across our country,” said Senator Mikulski, an original champion of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the Chairwoman of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Subcommittee (CJS), which is responsible for funding federal VAWA programs administered by the Justice Department. “The STOP Program has proven a valuable resource in the fight to curb domestic violence and sexual assault in Maryland. These funds provide victims advocacy providers, law enforcement officers, prosecutors and the courts with the most comprehensive and effective means of improving victim safety and holding offenders accountable for their crimes. I will continue my fight to put funds in the federal checkbook to fund these important programs.”

STOP VAWA is centered on the needs of victims. It encourages the development and improvement of effective law enforcement and prosecution strategies to address violent crimes against women and to enhance advocacy and victim services in cases of violent crimes against women.

In Maryland, law enforcement priorities for the funds include specialized training for officers in domestic violence, sexual assault and dating violence cases; specialized units or positions such as bilingual officers and domestic violence investigators; and implementation of policy and personnel relating to protective orders and firearms. For prosecutors, the funding provides among other services, bilingual and culturally competent staff; training in domestic violence and the appointment of prosecutors to focus full-time on domestic violence cases.

Thirty percent of STOP VAWA funds are committed to services for domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence victims. Victim service providers offer core, enhanced and culturally sensitive services to all victims, including traditionally underserved groups such as the Latino population and Asian-Pacific Islanders. Among other measures, support activities will enable victims to access crisis intervention programs, legal services, medical accompaniment, bilingual hotlines and safety planning in their own languages. The program will also provide resources to courts, enabling on-site legal representation to victims of intimate partner violence seeking court protection.

Discretionary funds are available for a number of innovative programs, including statewide lethality assessment training and fatality review teams as well as support of local coordinating councils and state coalitions

In the continuing effort to put an end to these tragedies, the O’Malley-Brown Administration led efforts to pass two bills during the 2009 legislative session that increase protection for Maryland’s victims of domestic violence and remove guns from the hands of abusers. The new legislation went into effect October 1, 2009.

Prayer For Wayne Bailey

Dear SCS Community,

Last week I put out a request for need (financial) for two different families. I received permission from the Lower School family this morning to share publicly the context of the need.

Wayne Bailey, SCS third grader, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. He has been up at Johns Hopkins hospital, but is actually home for a short time before having to return. He is scheduled to begin chemotheraphy on Monday, March 22nd.

Mrs. Keim, Wayne's teacher, has been in constant contact with his mother (Heather)....and has asked if there is anything they need for us to do for them. Her answer was to "pray as we have never prayed before. We need to pray for healing, for peace, for comfort, and for wisdom and discernment for the doctors."

I agree. Please include Wayne and his family in your daily prayers.

FYI: The SCS business office is continuing to collect monetary gifts (or script cards) for both upper school and this lower school family if you feel led to help. Again, please put "Lower school family" or "Upper school family" on your envelope so that the gift is directed in the right direction.

God bless!

Sincerely,
Mr. Fox

THANK GOODNESS FOR BARAK OBAMA

THANK GOD FOR BARAK HUSSEIN OBAMA - WHY? - HERE'S WHY!

He destroyed the Clinton Political Machine – Driving a stake thru the heart of Hillary’s Presidential aspirations – something no Republican was ever able to do.

Remember when a Hillary Presidency scared the daylights out of you?

He killed off the Kennedy Dynasty – No more Kennedy’s trolling Washington looking for booze and women wanting rides home. American women and Freedom are safer tonight!

He is destroying the Democratic Party before our eyes!
Dennis Moore had never lost a race – quit
Evan Bayh had never lost a race – quit
Byron Dorgan – had never lost a race – quit
Harry Reed – will be defeated in November 2010

These are just a handful of the Democrats that whose political careers Obama has destroyed! By the end of 2010 dozens more will be!

In December of 2008 the Democrats were on the rise. In the last two election cycles they had picked up 14 senate seats and 52 house seats. The press was touting the death of the Conservative Movement and the Republican Party. In one year Obama put a stop to all of this and will probably give the house, if not the senate back to the Republicans.

He has completely exposed liberals and progressives for what they are. Every Generation seems to need to relearn the lesson on why they should never actually put liberals in charge. He is bringing home the lesson very well!

Liberals tax, borrow and spend – check
Liberals won’t bring themselves to protect America – check
Liberals want to take over the economy – check
Liberals think they know what is best for everyone – check
Liberals aren’t happy till they are running YOUR life - check

Obama has brought more Americans back to Conservatism than anyone since Reagan
In One year, Obama rejuvenated the Conservative movement and brought out to the streets millions of Freedom Loving Americans

Name me one other time in your life that you saw your friends and neighbors this interested in taking back America!

Barak Obama woke up these Great Americans. Power to the people, who will take back their country!

Again, I want say thank you Barak Hussein Obama!

AFP-Maryland Launches Statewide Tax Day TEA Party Website

-Site will help direct thousands to local TEA Parties around state, connect organizers with activists and provide a call to action-

ANNAPOLIS
– The Maryland chapter of Americans for Prosperity has launched a website to help direct thousands of citizens to local TEA parties around the state, as well as connect potential activists with TEA party organizers. Last year Marylanders from Oakland to Ocean City attended tax day TEA parties to protest the rapid expansion of government. This year, a larger turnout will be expected at the 12 TEA parties planned in Maryland.

“MarylandTaxDayTEAParty.com is a way for the public to connect with organizers around the state,” stated AFP-Maryland state director Dave Schwartz. “With state budget deficits as far as the eye can see and the possibility of a government take over of our health care system, we expect large crowds on the week of April 15th. We hope our elected officials will be listening to our simple message: big government is not the solution, it is the problem.”

Many of the organizers are emphasizing state and local issues along with their disdain for federal government growth. The website encourages activists to contact their local elected officials to demand that they oppose Gov. O’Malley’s budget. By crafting a budget that is held together with ‘chewing gum and baling wire,’ Gov. O’Malley has created an $8.3 billion structural deficit and shown complete contempt for Maryland taxpayers.

Excessive Rain Causes Flooding On Delmarva

As you can see from the local images from above, excessive rain fall has caused issues for both residents and farmers. We have seen nothing but rain for several months and many farmers couldn't even get out to collect last years final crops. The ground has been just too wet and many farmers got stuck in fields with their equipment.

I know I have experiences flooding on my own property, even after enlarging ponds and installing storm water management. To think that "April showers bring May flowers" is in the future, will the farmers ever get a break?

Neighborhood Congress Pimping for Pollitt

Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt Did you know that the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress is pimping for the re-election of Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt?  Well, they are.

Last Saturday, the Campaign to Repeal the Revenue Cap and Raise Your Taxes (aka – Re-Elect Rick Pollitt) hosted a fundraiser at the Pittsville Fire House.  A few days before, I received this email from the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress:

Good morning Congress!

Attached above, kindly find our invitation to join County Executive Rick Pollitt and friends on Saturday afternoon, March 13th 2010, for a traditional Beef ‘n’ Dumplings dinner as Rick kicks off his re-election campaign as our first county executive.  The dinner will be held at the Pittsville Fire Hall from 5PM to 8PM and will feature live music, great food and stimulating fellowship.  Rick’s friends are asking for a donation of $30.00 to help defray the cost of the dinner and begin building a campaign treasury that will carry them through to Election Day.

We would like to ask everyone to come out and support Rick in his re-election efforts.  As you know, the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress was Rick’s vision, over three years ago, of bringing together a coalition of neighborhood leaders.  The Congress has been Rick’s means of reaching into the very heart of our county to determine the problems facing our neighborhoods.  He see’s and reads every e-mail communication that is sent out to the “Congress” and appreciates your dedication and the leadership you are giving; reaching out and gathering together for the preservation and betterment of our neighborhoods and community in Wicomico County.

Please join us for this fun and supportive evening for Rick.  Please RSVP by calling Connie Strott at 410-430-3112 so that they’ll know “how many dumplin’s to fix.

See you on Saturday!

Cindy Pilchard

Wicomico Neighborhood Congress

Chairman

To be fair, Cindy Pilchard isn’t violating any laws by doing this.  I can even hear my pal Mike Pretl giving me hell now because I opposed his plan to turn the WNC into a 501-c3 grassroots lobby.  (Such an email would be a gross violation of several laws IF the WNC was an incorporated 501-c3, but I still stand by my opposition)

IF Pilchard had simply sent out a personal email, I don’t think I would be as bothered by this.  Unfortunately, she didn’t.  Now we will be forced to scrutinize the motives behind every action taken by the WNC.  Sadly, the WNC now appears to be an adjunct of the Wicomico Democrat Central Committee rather than what it intended to be.

Shame on Ms. Pilchard and SHAME on Rick Pollitt.

TWO ANNE ARUNDEL CO. MEN CHARGED IN UNRELATED CHILD PORNOGRAPHY INVESTIGATIONS

(Glen Burnie, MD) -- Members of the Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested two Anne Arundel County men today as a result of two unrelated investigations into the possession and distribution of child pornography.

James William Szczepanik, 19, of the 7900 block of Pipers Path, Glen Burnie, Md., was arrested this afternoon and charged with five counts of distributing child pornography and ten counts of possessing child pornography. If convicted, Szczepanik could be sentenced up to 70 years in prison and/or $145,000 in fines. He was processed at the Glen Burnie Barracks and is awaiting an initial appearance before a court commissioner.

Raymon Robert Coulter, 68, of the 800 block of North Shore Drive, Glen Burnie, Md., turned himself in to State Police this morning and was charged with two counts of distributing child pornography and four counts of possessing child pornography. If convicted, Coulter could be sentenced up to 28 years in prison and/or $60,000 in fines. He was processed at the Glen Burnie Barracks and is awaiting an initial appearance before a court commissioner.

In January 2010, a trooper assigned to the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began an investigation after locating a computer on the Internet that was offering pornographic videos of children for others to download. Troopers were able to trace the computer back to Szczepanik. Investigators executed a search warrant at Szczepanik’s Glen Burnie residence and confiscated computers, hard drives, and miscellaneous storage media. An analysis of the confiscated equipment was conducted revealing videos and images of children engaged in various stages of sexual activity.

In June 2009, a trooper assigned to the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began an investigation after locating a computer on the Internet that was offering pornographic videos of children for others to download. Troopers were able to trace the computer back to Coulter. Investigators executed a search warrant at Coulter’s Glen Burnie residence and confiscated computers, hard drives, and miscellaneous storage media. An analysis of the confiscated equipment was conducted revealing videos and images of children engaged in various stages of sexual activity.

The primary mission of the Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit is to protect children from computer-facilitated sexual exploitation. The unit works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to provide resources to combat these crimes. The unit is also charged with helping to prevent the spread of these crimes through education and community awareness.

Runaway Prius The New 'Balloon Boy?'

Gov't Cannot Explain Runaway Prius Incident

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has not been able to find anything to explain the reported incident of sudden, high-speed acceleration in a Toyota Prius on a San Diego freeway.

WASHINGTON -- The federal government said Monday it cannot explain a reported incident of sudden, high-speed acceleration in a Toyota Prius on a San Diego, Calif., freeway last week.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement that it continues to investigate but "we may never know exactly what happened with this car."

The agency said its engineers are reviewing data from the Prius owned by James Sikes to try to understand what happened with his hybrid. But so far, NHTSA says it has not been able to find anything to explain the incident that Sikes reported.

Sikes called 911 last Monday to report losing control of his Prius as the hybrid reached speeds of 94 mph. A highway patrol officer helped bring the vehicle to a safe stop.

Inspectors in California tried during a two-hour test drive to duplicate the acceleration, but were unable to do so.

First Same-Sex Marriage Held Inside D.C. Church

History happened at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, D.C., on Sunday. Willard Knicely married Robert Whitman in front of more than 100 family members and friends.

When the District legalized same-sex marriage a few weeks ago, people lined up for licenses and a few days later ceremonies were performed at a government building. So, same-sex marriages themselves may no longer be breaking news, but where this one happened is noteworthy.

The Rev. Dwayne Johnson, who helped preside over the ceremony, said Metropolitan Community Church has actually been performing same-sex ceremonies since 1971.

McJilton, who trained locally at Olympia Fitness Club, died of complications from leukemia on October 10, 2009.

“Justin was a friend and an inspiration in our local bodybuilding community,” said Julie Mason of Olympia Fitness Club. “Throughout his battle with cancer, Justin never wavered in his commitment to being physically ready for competition and, at the same time, kept his incredible commitment to helping children with cancer. Justin lived his life as an example of what it means to be a true competitor. We hope this event will honor him as much as he deserves.”

The OCB: Compete For a Cure McJilton Classic will feature three competitive divisions in men’s and women’s bodybuilding - Novice, Open, and ages 40+ for men and ages 35+ for women. For the figure competitions the divisions will be Novice, Open, and 35+. The McJilton Classic will also feature a Masters Division that is open to competitors 40 and over and an Open Division that is open to anyone regardless of age or level of experience.

KRATOVIL MAY SUPPORT SENATE HEALTH CARE BILL

Vote Likely This Week

Although Kratovil voted no on the House HealthCare Bill, he is now warming to this Senate billl and is in danger of switching to a YES VOTE according to Dick Morris and Hannity's House vote count. The Hill, as of Saturday, reports that Pelosi needs 37 more votes with 34 NO or leaning NO and dozens more undecided. Pelosi can easily win with arm-twisting and bribes.

Defeat the bill in the House and it is all over. Reconcilliation doesn't matter. It must be killed in the House.

Kratovil must be reminded that the people do not want this bill, but legitimate reform. Start over with torte reform and insurance purchase across state lines.

Tell Congressman Kratovil to vote NO on Senate bill.

Fredericksen Fails Economic Literacy Test

Recently we have seen many groups argue that our nation’s school children should receive more economic and financial education in our public schools. However, after reading Wicomico County Board of Education (WCBOE) superintendent John Fredericksen’s op-ed in Sunday’s Daily Times, one thing is clear – the leader of our county’s schools certainly isn’t fit to teach a class on the subject.

In a poorly veiled attempt to drum up support for more wasteful spending, Fredericksen claims that we should support our public schools because they are an “economic engine” helping to grow our economy:

The Wicomico County school system is one of the region's top three employers, an economic engine with 25 schools and more than 2,500 employees. Our employees support the Wicomico County economy and the communities where they live, magnifying the effect of dollars that are spent on public education.

Sorry John. Government spending cannot create wealth. Therefore it cannot grow an economy. It was a nice try though.

Perhaps you could use some of your vacation time to read a few books. A great place to start would be Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson. It would increase YOUR economic literacy at least a thousand fold.

Perotta, Wiseman Win Top 100 Maryland Women Awards

Christina (Tina) Perotta
Ann Wiseman

Christina (Tina) Perotta and Ann Wiseman, both of Salisbury, are among the Top 100 Women in Maryland for 2010, according to the annual list compiled by The Maryland Daily Record, a business-oriented newspaper from Baltimore. The entire 100 top women will be honored on May 3 at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. This is the 15th year of the award which has recognized outstanding achievements of professional women.

Ann Wiseman is the director of the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions in which she teaches respect, etiquette and ballroom dance to middle-schoolers and serves as the Eastern Shore director for Business Networking International (BNI) of Maryland where she is responsible for seven chapters of small business people.

Previously, she was a national-award-winning certified legal nurse consultant who headed up B. Ann Wiseman and Associates after working as an operating room nurse at PRMC and the Delmarva Surgery Center. As a legal nurse consultant working with attorneys on medical issues, she received one of four national awards from the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants at their 2005 New Orleans conference. She also taught college seminars in that field for continuing education for nurses.

As a volunteer in the community, Mrs. Wiseman serves as vice chair of the board and chair of the development committee for Women Supporting Women, a local breast cancer support and education group, and is a member of the board of Lower Shore Enterprises. In 2005, she was appointed to the Maryland State Leadership Team for the Lumina Foundation’s Study on Retention of Low Income Adult Students by Dr. Thelma Thompson, president of UMES. She is also a 2009 graduate of Shore Leadership.

Mrs. Wiseman is currently a member of the Community Players of Salisbury and appeared last fall in the production of “All Shook Up.”

Tina Perotta recently was honorary co-chair of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Spring Gala which is a major yearly scholarship fund-raising event for the university. She is also co-founder and administrator of La Merced Medical Mission and Community Outreach to Nicaragua.

Currently, she is working on LaMerced’s third mission trip this June. Last year, 12 team members from Salisbury traveled to Managua, serving 88 patients in that week which included 15 major pediatric plastic surgeries. They established a small procedure room at the Roberto Clemente Clinic for Women and Children in the capital city of the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. More than $25,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment were donated by physicians and hospitals on Delmarva.

In the community, Mrs. Perotta is a board member of Lower Shore Enterprises, secretary and board member of the West Nithsdale Homeowners Association and an advisory board member of the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions.

Presently, she is working on a dual master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and an MBA at the University of Maryland’s, University College.

Two other Top 100 Women from the Eastern Shore announced in the press earlier were Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach, president of Salisbury University, and Dr. Ellen Neufeldt, vice president of student affairs, also at Salisbury University.

Tea Party Brings Energy, Change And Tumult To GOP

The political commentariat doesn't know what to make of those thousands of Americans who have spontaneously thronged to tea parties and town hall meetings to oppose the big government programs of the Obama administration and Democratic congressional leaders.

Some on the Left attack them as fascists or racists, though evidence of that is sorely lacking. David Brooks in the New York Times compared them with the New Left campus radicals of the 1970s, which comes closer to reality but doesn't quite ring true.

Some tea partiers, citing the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, compare themselves with the patriots of 1776 and the founders of 1787, which has some validity but seems overly self-congratulatory.

In terms of their immediate effect on conventional politics and their potential for continued influence, I think the tea partiers bear an uncanny resemblance to the antiwar activists in the Vietnam War period.

Like the tea partiers, the antiwar folk did not start off affiliated with one political party. They campaigned against an incumbent Democratic president and his political heir in 1968. Four years later some supported Rep. Pete McCloskey's antiwar primary challenge to Richard Nixon. The tea partiers have plenty of corrosive things to say about the Republican politicians of the last decade and at least some of them may support like-minded Democrats.

But if they stay involved, the tea partiers are likely to gravitate to the Republican Party, just as the antiwar folk gravitated to the Democratic Party, on which they had a long-lasting and pervasive effect.

Not all of that effect was positive. Antiwar Democrats beat hawks in primaries and then lost general elections to Republicans. The disarray of the 1968 Democratic National Convention helped beat Hubert Humphrey, and the antiwar 1972 nominee George McGovern lost 49 states. Some antiwar folks voiced an anti-Americanism that turned off ordinary voters.

But antiwar Democrats supplied energy and impressive recruits to their party.

Obama's Sick Obsession

Nationalized health care is the progressives' Golden Fleece. It is their obsession, the ultimate prize that was denied to previous administrations but is closer than it ever has been. As the ability of government to take over the health care system draws tantalizingly near, the president and leaders of the majority party have become infected with a kind of mania. President Obama and Democratic congressional leaders seem determined to ram through a severely flawed piece of legislation by any means necessary, heedless of the desires of the American people or the negative impact on the system they mistakenly say needs to be saved.

A large majority of Americans are satisfied with their current health care plans, though most also think the system could be improved. Yet proponents of the Democrats' radical health care overhaul brazenly claim the system is irretrievably broken and only radical surgery will save it. According to the latest Gallup poll numbers, less than a fifth of even those who favor health reform agree with that position. The majority of Americans are divided between those who want a scaled-back health care measure and those who want the current project dropped entirely. If any system is broken, it is the legislative process.

Long-time Democratic pollsters Patrick H. Caddell and Douglas E. Schoen warned last week that "the battle for public opinion has been lost" on heath care. Democrats have backed themselves into a corner. If the bill fails, they suffer a defeat. But if they win, they also lose because Democrats "will face a far greater calamitous reaction" in November. "Wishing, praying or pretending will not change these outcomes," they caution.

The Democrats' headlong drive is leading to bouts of political insanity, such as the aptly named Slaughter rule, which potentially could allow the House of Representatives to "deem" the health bill passed without a final vote. That the Democratic leadership would consider resorting to such a stunt betrays a high degree of contempt for the electorate, whom they presumably think will not remember or care that their representatives would not go on the record on such a major piece of legislation.

Disaffected voters, however, will recognize cowardice for what it is. Add to this the Louisiana Purchase, the Cornhusker Kickback, the backroom dealing, special-interest loopholes and fundamental unsoundness of placing government at the center of the health care system, and November will be a slaughter indeed.

Would You Believe 1 Million To Attend Christian Concert At Yoder's Farm?

A local newspaper ran a two-page article on the concert titled "Calling All Christians," and that's exactly what Jim Plack and the organizers of Jubileefest are doing, seeking to gather 1 million people to Sam Yoder's farm outside of tiny Houston, Del., this summer for a praise and prayer event for the nation.

"Every Christian should be there," quipped the Jubileefest website, "but we only have room for a million."

Never mind that Jublieefest is in its inaugural year. Never mind that the crowd Plack is hoping to gather is more than three times larger than any Christian concert event in history and twice as big as 1969's "Three Days of Peace and Music." Plack is trusting God to fulfill the vision he says the Almighty has given him, a vision for a concert that will impact the nation even more than the fabled Woodstock.

"If half a million hippies can gather on farm in New York to do drugs and have sex," Plack told WND, "certainly God can bring a million Christians to a farm in Delaware.

"Christian music festivals like Minnesota's four-day-long Sonshine draw tens of thousands of fans every summer across America. Pennsylvania's mega-rally CreationFest draws hundreds of thousands.

And while Plack doesn't expect record-setting crowds for all four days of the July 29 - Aug. 1 Jubileefest, he is calling for a million Christians to come on one night, July 31, for a prayer and praise event that will boldly proclaim to the nation's "PC (politically correct) police" that America's faithful are a force to be reckoned with.

"The Christian community hasn't really come together and said, 'Here we are, look at us,'" Plack said. "If we put a million people on a farm, that's something that can't be ignored."

For the Plack brothers, Jubileefest has been a leap of faith from the very beginning. Their faith, in turn, has been rewarded with both stunning setbacks and sudden turns of fortune the brothers attribute only to God.

"We have seen God work time after time opening doors," Phil said. "We believe with all of our hearts it will be tremendous success.

"Jubileefest, however, came to the razor's edge of being cancelled only a few months ago.

Jim told WND the story of the day he learned that the Maryland farm he had envisioned holding a million worshippers … was suddenly scratched from the plan:

There's lots more to this story..

A Brooke Mulford Update

Coming to an End!

Wed 3/10
Wed morning Brooke’s doctor (Dr. Weiser) gave us a tour of Dr. Maris’ Neuroblastoma research lab! This is where every penny that we raise for Brooke’s Fund for Neuroblastoma Research goes. We have turned into CHOP over $25,000 so far from various fundraisers and the sales of Team Brooke shirts and bracelets http://giving.chop.edu/site/TR/Events/General?pxfid=5440&pg=fund&fr_id=1030

Brooke made a poster to give them that said, “Thanks for Fighting for Me and My Friends! XOXO Brooke” and she put pictures of several of our friends at CHOP that also have NB, painted her handprints on it and of course many stickers. We had such a great time and everyone made such a big fuss over Brooke and made her feel so special. We have some great pictures but I’m having some media card issues so after I get back home and can hopefully recover the photos, I will be sure to post them on here. After the tour, Brooke had an Ophthalmology Clinic appt. She has been patching her right eye 2 hours a day for the past month because her amblyopia (lazy eye) had gotten worse again. Also, she has had some other issues with her eyes since her 2nd round of the antibodies back in December that her eye doctor (Dr. Binenbaum) has been watching closely. Everything went well and her eyes seem to be improving. Brooke will have another follow up visit in 2 months and hopefully all her issues will be resolved by that time. After Ophthalmology we headed upstairs for Oncology Clinic to see Dr. Weiser and wait for our room to be ready. I’m happy to say for our last admission (hopefully ever)we got a room on our favorite hall (the south side) with a window to outside (even looking at the rain is better than looking into the ER waiting room). Brooke was so excited from all the events of the day and being back at CHOP that when we got in the room she danced for hours (to the same song I might add, Single Ladies, over and over again).

Thurs 3/11
Thurs was an exciting and busy morning. The CBS Early Show was here interviewing, Brooke, Me & Dr. Weiser for a follow up story they did on Comfort Capes in December (here’s a link to the segment that showed in Dec) http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6018224n&tag=api

Brooke received a Comfort Cape in January from my friend Kim and loves it so much. I’ll try and post a picture of her in her cape and I will let everyone know when the follow up story with us will air.

It was a good thing they were here in the morning before Brooke got hooked up to the morphine and antibodies because she gets some pretty intense mood swings once the meds are going. Once that was done the rest of the day was pretty uneventful (other than the mood swings which are exhausting for everyone around her).

Friday 3/12
Mood swings continued but not as intense as usual, she had a low grade fever and needed a blood transfusion.

Saturday 3/13/10
Aunt Cheryl braved the monsoon and came to visit and Brooke was busy making cards for every person that walked into the room!

A 9 year old boy, Wayne, from Brooke’s school (Salisbury Christian School), was diagnosed on Monday with Stage IV NB and is being treated at Hopkins. We ask that you please add Wayne and his family to your prayer list. We know how long and difficult this road will be for them.

One of our good friends at CHOP, Malcolm, who is 11 years old and has Ewings Sarcoma has started a foundation to raise money for research and awareness for pediatric cancer called Make Some Noise-Cure Kids Cancer. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the kick-off event in January where Malcolm debuted his awareness video “1 in 320”. Here is the link for the video (look for Brooke in itJ)

Please take a moment to watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV8xdknGNg8

God Bless,
Amy

Some Inspiring News!

The entire senior class at Chicago's only public all-male, all-African-American high school has been accepted to four-year colleges. At last count, the 107 seniors had earned spots at 72 schools across the nation.

Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman surprised students at an all-school assembly at Urban Prep Academy for Young Men in Englewood this morning to congratulate them. It's the first graduating class at Urban Prep since it opened its doors in 2006.

Huberman applauded the seniors for making CPS shine.

"All of you in the senior class have shown that what matters is perseverance, what matters is focus, what matters is having a dream and following that dream," Huberman said.

The school enforces a strict uniform of black blazers, khaki pants and red ties -- with one exception. After a student receives the news he was accepted into college, he swaps his red tie for a red and gold one at an assembly.

The last 13 students received their college ties today, to thunderous applause.

Ask Rayvaughn Hines what college he was accepted to and he'll answer with a question.

"Do you want me to name them all?

"For the 18-year-old from Back of the Yards, college was merely a concept--never a goal--growing up. Even within the last three years, he questioned if school, let alone college, was for him. Now, the senior is headed to the prestigious Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. next fall.

Hines remembers the moment he put on his red and gold tie.

"I wanted to take my time because I was just so proud of myself," he said. "I wanted everyone to see me put it on."

The achievement might not merit a mayoral visit at one of the city's elite, selective enrollment high schools. But Urban Prep, a charter school that enrolls using a lottery in one of the city's more troubled neighborhoods, faced difficult odds. Only 4 percent of this year's senior class read at grade level as freshmen, according to Tim King, the school's CEO.

"I never had a doubt that we would achieve this goal," King said. "Every single person we hired knew from the day one that this is what we do: We get our kids into college."

College is omnipresent at the school. Before the students begin their freshman year, they take a field trip to Northwestern University. Every student is assigned a college counselor the day he steps foot in the school.

The school offers an extended day--170,000 more minutes over four years compared to its counterparts across the city--and more than double the number of English credits usually needed to graduate.

Even the school's voicemail has a student declaring "I am college bound" before it asks callers to dial an extension.

Normally, it takes senior Jerry Hinds two buses and 45 minutes to get home from school. On Dec. 11, the day University of Illinois at Champaign- Urbana was to post his admission decisions online at 5 p.m., he asked a friend to drive him home.

He went into his bedroom, told his well-wishing mother this was something he had to do alone, closed the door and logged in.

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" he remembers screaming. His mother, who didn't dare stray far, burst in and began crying.

That night he made more than 30 phone calls, at times shouting "I got in" on his cell phone and home phone at the same time.

"We're breaking barriers," he said. "And that feels great."

A Prayer For The President

We were in slow-moving traffic the other day and the car in front of us had an Obama bumper sticker on it. It read: "Pray for Obama. Psalm 109:8".

My husband's Bible was lying on the dash board & he got it & opened it up to the scripture & read it. He started laughing & laughing.

Psalm 109:8

"Let his days be few; and let another take his office. "

At last - I can voice a Biblical prayer for our president! Look it up - it is word for word! Let us all bow our heads and pray.
