A Comment Worthy Of A Post 2-10-12

ANON has left a new comment on your post "Best Buy warranty a ripoff?":

I got a warranty for the IPHONE I bought from BEST BUY. When I asked about ATT warranty - per Best Buy rep ATT had none - wrong - ATT always had a warranty. The ATT warranty which covers everything - lost and stolen phone and accidental damage including water damage, product support with use and software and phone locating casts only $9.99 with a $199 copay. to get all of this with Best Buy costs $14.99 + $4.99. with no copay. Even if you ask the reps they will not tell you what the warranty they sell covers. You are better off taking your business to the ATT store.

Santorum, Romney Face Off In High-Stakes Appeal

Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum will appear in the same venue Friday for the first time since Santorum handed Romney a three-pronged defeat earlier in the week.

Both will be competing for the support of the same cluster of die-hard conservatives — more than 10,000 in total — who have amassed for the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Addressing the annual convention of party faithful is a rite of passage for presidential candidates, but for Santorum and Romney, the stakes are much higher.

Still reeling from his bruising Tuesday loss to Santorum in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri, Romney must convince activists he’s the bona fide conservative he claims to be. For Santorum, the challenge is to win over those whose doubts about his electability against President Obama make them reluctant to bet on a losing horse.

“Romney’s real mission is to win the soul of his party,” said Alex Castellanos, a GOP strategist who advised Romney’s 2008 presidential campaign. “Santorum doesn’t even need to run negatives against Romney, which is telling.”

An informal survey of a few-dozen conference attendees conducted by The Hill on Thursday found about equal excitement for Romney and Santorum. Almost no one said they were waiting to hear Newt Gingrich or Ron Paul, who are also speaking Friday.

Group Forces Congressional Hearing On Big Sis’ Twitter, Drudge Spying

A privacy advocacy group has swayed Congress to hold a hearing next week into the Department of Homeland Security’s practice of monitoring social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as media reports and organizations, including The Drudge Report.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) recently obtained close to 300 pages of documents, as a result of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, detailing the federal agency’s “intelligence gathering” practices on the web.

Among the documents were guidelines from DHS instructing outside contractors to monitor the web for media reports and comments that “reflect adversely” on the agency or the federal government.

As Reuters reported last month, in early 2010 contractors were asked to spend 24 hours monitoring news media coverage on popular websites, including Facebook, Twitter, Hulu, WikiLeaks, as well as news sites including the Huffington Post and The Drudge Report.

The contractors were required to provide the DHS with feedback on any potential “threats and hazards”, as well as “any media reports that reflect adversely on the U.S. Government and the Department of Homeland Security (D.H.S.) ability to prevent, protect and respond, to recovery efforts or activities related to any crisis or events which impact National Planning Scenarios.”
The documents also state that the program should highlight “both positive and negative reports on FEMA, C.I.A., C.B.P., ICE, etc., as well as organizations outside of D.H.S.”

The documents obtained by EPIC indicate that following the exercise, a procurement official awarded an $11.3 million contract to General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems in order to carry out the monitoring on a “24/7/365 basis”.

EPIC director Ginger McCall notes that monitoring what people are saying about government policies goes too far and has a chilling effect on free speech.

“The Department of Homeland Security’s monitoring of political dissent has no legal basis and is contrary to core First Amendment principles,” she said.

“The language in the documents makes it quite clear that they are looking for media reports that are critical of the agency and the U.S. government more broadly,” said McCall. “This is entirely outside of the bounds of the agency’s statutory duties.”

Pastors Encircle Santorum For Prayer

Texas pastors who listened to GOP presidential hopeful Sen. Rick Santorum talk about the life and liberty goals of his campaign before ending the meeting gathered around him, placed their hands on his shoulders and prayed for God’s direction in his work.

“We thank you for the grace and goodness that motivates Rick Santorum to run for president,” a pastor who led the group prayed. “We thank you for the goodness and grace of pastors in this room who are motivated to seek your kingdom first.”

“Lord, we pray that you would direct Rick’s steps as he campaigns for president.”

After winning the Iowa caucuses, Santorum fell back into the pack of GOP contenders. In mid-January, a meeting of top conservatives from around the country had assembled in Texas and picked Santorum as their choice for the 2012 race against Barack Obama.

His campaign continued its ups and downs until this week, when he stunned GOP observers, sweeping to victory in caucuses in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. The results pushed his campaign forward in a sudden surge of attention, donations and activity.

The meeting with pastors was in McKinney, Texas, where he joined the ministers gathered in a small chapel.

Pamela Kripke at the New York Times reported Santorum asked the pastors to seek continued prayer from their congregations.

“Your prayers are the reason I am here,” he said.

Drone Kill

We had a "drone" pilot as a guest speaker at one of our American Legion Post meetings. It was interesting to hear him talk. He said they get flight pay and hour credits as if they were actually airborne. Drones are also controlled from Arizona . He said they see some "interesting" things on roof tops on warm summer nights with the infrared night vision. Wonder what he meant?
READ BELOW BEFORE OPENING THE ATTACHMENT.

The female drone controller is actually flying the aircraft. Her flight instruments screen is located in the upper left of the lower central large monitor screen. The other screens are views from the drone itself.

The control booths or rooms are made in Garland , TEXAS by Raytheon ..

For non-pilots, these controllers are in Nevada and each is flying a drone on the other side of the world thousands of miles away, in the combat zone in Iraq and Afghanistan . Their left hand is on the throttle controlling the drone's engine. The right hand is flying the plane. All the buttons used to fly the drone are located on the joystick. The controller never removes his or her hand from the throttle.

Kill a Taliban leader then go home for lunch or dinner! Welcome to the new world. Imagine how big the communication pipe has to be to pump all the data necessary to perform these complicated tasks through it on the other side of the world in REAL TIME. It is not a modem you or I will ever get our hands on at Radio Shack !!! This is modern warfare.

Today's headline: Missiles fired from Nevada controlled drone aircraft kill Taliban leader in Afghanistan .

Now watch how it is done ....

FBI Terrorist Alert: Beware Of Those Who 'Reference The Constitution Or Bible'

Memo to Ron Paul supporters -- and anyone else interested in restoring constitutional integrity

"Wherever the real power in a Government lies, there is the danger of oppression." --James Madison (1788)

The FBI held a press conference this week on a terrorist alert bulletin, which it sent to every federal, state and local law enforcement agency across the country. Unfortunately, that bulletin continued a trend of "terrorist profiles" issued since Barack Hussein Obama has been in office. This particular alert identified such broad ideological characteristics that it can be construed to include the activities of tens of millions of law-abiding Americans.

The FBI counterterrorism division report concluded that those who believe that our government has exceeded its constitutional limits or are protesting for restoration of constitutional integrity might pose a threat. By that definition, anyone associated with the "Tea Party movement" is suspect, and that's the problem with this sweeping and politically motivated "bureaucrap."

Make no mistake: There are some deadly anti-government socialist and fascist radicals in America. For example, consider the man who launched someone's political career in 1994 -- Obama mentor William Ayers, who was previously the leader of the Weathermen, a murderous group of radical "useful idiots." They bombed the U.S. Capitol twice, the Pentagon, the Department of State, several federal courthouses, plus state and local government buildings -- with intent to kill. Unfortunately, the FBI never assembled sufficient evidence to convict Ayers. (Lucky break for Obama's career!)

QUOTE OF THE DAY 2-10-12

“Every dictatorship has ultimately strangled in the web of repression it wove for its people, making mistakes that could not be corrected because criticism was prohibited…A revolution is coming, a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough. But a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character; we cannot alter its inevitability.”

Good News From Annapolis

Caylee's Law

This week in Annapolis the house version of Caylee's Law was heard in Judiciary committee. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the law, it seeks to change the reporting guidelines for a death or disappearance of a child.

Background:
In July of 2011 Casey Anthony was acquitted of the murder of her daughter Caylee because there was substantial evidence that she did not report the death of her daughter to authorities.

Caylee's Law (HB122): The law seeks to make it a felony if the death of a child (under 12y/o), who is not under the care of a doctor, is not reported within one hour or if a child goes missing and is not reported to authorities within 24 hours.

Examining the Problem in Maryland: In Baltimore City
58 children between age of 1 and 9 were reported missing more than 24 hours after they disappeared. (2009-2011)

THIS BILL CAN HELP POLICE TRACK MISSING CHILDREN QUICKER, BEFORE THEY COME TO FURTHER HARM.

Mayor, A Little Help Please?

This is a photo of my neighbors house (college students) This was put out 7 days ago on the sidewalk. I have put in 1 call to housing inspector and 2 to the mayors office and its still there. Why is this house getting a pass?? Why did I get a ticket when my bumper was crossing onto the sidewalk parked in my own driveway yet this can sit for 7 days blocking the sidewalk? Obiviously even the mayors office does not have the pull or does not care.

White House: Birth Control Mandate ‘Virtually Identical’ To Romney’s Massachusetts Policy

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney scoffed at Republican primary candidate Mitt Romney’s criticism of a new rule that will require all health insurance policies – except for people working directly in a church or seminary – to cover sterilization and FDA-approved contraceptives, including those that induce abortions, saying that Romney backed a near-identical policy as governor of Massachusetts.

At Wednesday’s White House briefing, Carney said, “You know, the former governor of Massachusetts is an odd messenger on this given that the services that this rule would provide for women around the country are the same that were provided in Massachusetts and were provided when he was governor -- including contraception, including, you know, covered with no co-pay or deductible, religious exemptions for houses of worship and churches, and church-controlled organizations such as parochial schools but not to universities and hospitals.”

“I mean this is, I think, ironic, that Mitt Romney is expressing, criticizing the president for pursuing a policy that's virtually identical to the one that was in place when he was governor of Massachusetts,” Carney said.

Real Reasons Why Planned Parenthood Freaked Over Komen

'They can't afford to have any group stand up to them'

A new report has validated concerns expressed by the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Foundation over investigations into Planned Parenthood, the U.S. abortion industry’s biggest player.

And there also has been suggested a reason why Planned Parenthood stomped so hard and so fast on the foundation and its relatively minor grants when officials there said they would discontinue them because of the multiple investigations of Planned Parenthood.

“Planned Parenthood is like the mafia and if one store owner doesn’t want to pay, they take him out because they can’t afford to have any group stand up to them,” said Gualberto Garcia Jones, the legal analyst for Personhood USA, the campaign that simply suggests defining the unborn as “persons” under the Constitution, which would protect them from abortion.

Republicans Target Child Tax-Break 'Free-Funds' For Illegal Immigrants

WASHINGTON – Republicans are pushing a proposal that would halt what amounts to an IRS-administered entitlement that provides "free-funds" to low-income illegal immigrant filers who take advantage of a child tax credit to receive government payments that average about $1,800.

The proposal would require people filing tax returns to prove they're legal workers. The effort has roused anger among Hispanics and some Democratic lawmakers. But it's being offered as a way to help pay for extending the payroll tax cut and is projected to trim federal spending by about $10 billion over a decade. The IRS checks average about $1,800.

Iran Turns To Barter For Food As Sanctions Cripple Imports

PARIS/TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran is turning to barter - offering gold bullion in overseas vaults or tankerloads of oil - in return for food as new financial sanctions have hurt its ability to import basic staples for its 74 million people, commodities traders said Thursday.

Difficulty paying for urgent import needs has contributed to sharp rises in the prices of basic foodstuffs, causing hardship for Iranians with just weeks to go before an election seen as a referendum on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's economic policies.

TOP 12 REASONS THE MORTGAGE SETTLEMENT SUCKS

As readers may know by now, 49 of 50 states have agreed to join the so-called mortgage settlement, with Oklahoma the lone refusenik. Although the fine points are still being hammered out, various news outlets (New York Times, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal) have details, with Dave Dayen’s overview at Firedoglake the best thus far.

The Wall Street Journal is also reporting that the SEC is about to launch some securities litigation against major banks. Since the statue of limitations has already run out on securities filings more than five years old, this means they’ll clip the banks for some of the very last (and dreckiest) deals they shoved out the door before the subprime market gave up the ghost.
The various news services are touting this pact at the biggest multi-state settlement since the tobacco deal in 1998. While narrowly accurate, this deal is bush league by comparison even though the underlying abuses in both cases have had devastating consequences.

The tobacco agreement was pegged as being worth nearly $250 billion over the first 25 years. Adjust that for inflation, and the disparity is even bigger. That shows you the difference in outcomes between a case where the prosecutors have solid evidence backing their charges, versus one where everyone know a lot of bad stuff happened, but no one has come close to marshaling the evidence.

Self-Interest And The Pathology Of Power: The Corruption Of America Part 2

The self-interest of the alcoholic is to keep drinking. Is this truly in his best interests? The answer illuminates the pathology of power in America.

If we ignore the lip-service showered on "reform," we find that there is really only one strategy in America: extend and pretend. Individuals, households, communities, cities, states, enterprises and the vast sprawling Empire of the Federal government and its many proxies--all are engaged in extend and pretend.

The closest analog is a seriously ill alcoholic who tells himself he just has a hang-over when it's abundantly clear he is suffering from potentially terminal cancer. With a hang-over, extend and pretend is the only strategy that works: you can try various "magic potions" to relieve the symptoms, but the only real cure is to give the body enough time to cleanse itself of the toxins you've created and pretend to be functioning in the meantime.

In the case of aggressive cancer, then extend and pretend is the worst possible strategy: ignoring the rapid progression of the disease only makes eventual treatment more difficult and uncertain.

Ron Paul - THE OBI-WAN KENOBI & GREY CHAMPION OF THIS FOURTH TURNING

Members of Generation X, born 1962 to 1981, and Generation Y, 1982-2004, are rallying behind Ron Paul in his run for president. Media commentators find it odd that people under the age of 40 in the X Generation and especially voters under age 30 in the Y Generation are so taken with this unassuming, soft-spoken 76-year-old candidate. Ron Paul is in the Silent Generation, whose members are now 70 to 87 years of age (born 1925-1942).

Exit polls show that Ron Paul won the majority of voters under age 40 in the Iowa caucus and in the New Hampshire primary. He received 21.4 percent of the votes in Iowa (first-place Rick Santorum got 24.6 percent) and came in second in New Hampshire with 22.9 percent of the votes (first-place Mitt Romney got 39.3 percent). More voters under age 30 chose Ron Paul over the other candidates in the South Carolina primary and Nevada caucus. He garnered 41 percent of the under 30 vote in Nevada – Mitt Romney got 36 percent; Newt Gingrich, 16 percent; and Rick Santorum, 7 percent. But only a small minority of older people has voted for him, as was especially evident in the Florida Republican primary.

Rep. Andy Harris And Rep. Richard Hanna Sponsor Tubman Park Bill

Washington, DC – Reps. Andy Harris (MD-01) and Richard Hanna (NY-24) introduced legislation to establish The Harriet Tubman National Historical Park co-located in Maryland and New York. The Maryland portion of the park would be located in Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot Counties and the New York location would be in Auburn.

“These parks would honor the significant legacy and achievements of one America’s most important African American leaders,” said Rep. Andy Harris (MD-01). “The park will provide a wonderful opportunity to observe the historic landscape surrounding Maryland’s portion of the Underground Railroad. I eagerly anticipate working with Congressman Hanna and the Members of the Maryland and New York delegations to help advance this important piece of legislation.”

“Harriet Tubman was an incredible American, woman and humanitarian,” U.S. Representative Richard Hanna said. “It is only right that we honor and celebrate her life in an appropriate way. Since coming to Congress, I’ve worked to make that happen and make this a reality for the city of Auburn. This bill is a big step toward that goal.”

"I look forward to working with Congressman Harris, and the entire New York and Maryland delegations to make these parks for Harriet Tubman a reality."

Maryland Legislature Sponsors Bills To Bailout School Teachers Pension Plan and Shift Cost To Counties

Today - HB-863 and SB-836 were sponsored in the Maryland Legislature to pass-on Pension Cost that were previously provided at the State level down to the Counties.

Basically - these bills will provide requisite authority to require Counties to pay the pension cost for school teachers, librarians, and community college educators. Wicomico County is expected to absorb 3.8 million dollars - (refer to HB-87) - as a result of enactment of this legislation. However - the real sticker shock may come in subsequent years as teachers salaries increase as well as escalation of their associated pension costs. Our preliminary projections show Wicomico County will ultimately have to absorb as much as 10 million dollars per year in additional pension cost by the year 2023 - or in 10 years. We will be publishing this data report in the very near future.

Also, I anticipate that the Democratic side of the legislature will follow-up with sponsoring their own version of the Teachers pension bailout bill - and we'll try and keep our readers posted as that develops.

Santorum: Obama Trying To Allow Iran To Have Nuke

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is accusing President Barack Obama of actively seeking ways to allow Iran to gain a nuclear weapon.

In a speech Thursday in Oklahoma City, Santorum drew connections between the administration's opposition to the Keystone pipeline project, which would bring oil from Canada to U.S. refineries, and American dependency on foreign oil and U.S.-Israel relations.

Santorum says the U.S. will say it doesn't want Iran to have a nuclear weapon but will give in on the matter for the oil.

The U.S. doesn't purchase oil from Iran, but its allies do. Pulling Iranian oil from the world market would wreak havoc on oil prices.

An eight-month investigation revealed that Smith actually struck Bosse, 43, with his car.

Technology Services Building Damaged By Fire

The Technology Services portable building on the Board of Education campus briefly caught fire on Wednesday night, and Board tech staff worked into the night to begin putting together a plan to continue delivery of technology support services for the school system.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Feb. 8, a fire was discovered in the technology services office. The fire department was notified and it responded promptly, putting out the fire quickly. The fire affected offices for eight staff members and technology prep areas. The State Fire Marshal conducted an inspection.

Technology and Facility Services staff were on site into the early morning hours to secure the facility and begin the cleanup process. Facility Services staff continues to provide support to address facility issues and assist in the short- and long-term relocation of tech staff.

“The Technology Services and Facility Services teams are in good spirits considering the circumstances, and they are all working hard to get back to full operation quickly so that there can be as little impact as possible on technology services,” said Robert Langan, Director of Technology for the school system. “Everyone is eager to get relocated and restarted.”

Help Desk services have been relocated to Annex 1-MIS on the Central Office Campus and were up and running by 9 a.m. Thursday. Requests for technology assistance can be made using eHelpDesk tickets.

Nearly all computer systems and data are housed in a different area and are running at normal service levels. Affected services should return to full operation within 24 hours. One application - CompassLearning - remains down, and will be brought back on line as soon as possible for the Title I schools that use it.

“Our team has done a terrific job in responding to this emergency,” said Dr. John E. Fredericksen, Superintendent of Schools. “They are working together to ensure that the school system continues to meet its Master Plan strategic priority of effective and efficient operations even when faced with something as challenging as the aftermath of a fire. We’re proud of their efforts.”

Board Of Ed Fire

Dear Joe,

Now that the dust, or soot in this case, has settled, I thought I'd write you a quick note about the fire at the Board of Ed. I realize that at the time of your post, you had no idea where the fire had broken out and you were simply asking the question. However, none of your readers had any idea either, it appears. The fire was not at the print shop, the maintenance shop, nor the main office building. It was actually a small portable which is located on Mt. Hermon Rd. The people who work in that building are part of the IT department. However, sorry to disappoint your readers who believe that this fire is part of a huge conspiracy to rid the world of proof of the issues plaguing the WCBOE right now. The mainframe is not housed in this building. No computer storage, no security tapes, nothing like that at all. It was mostly office space. Hopefully, they will find a cause for the fire soon. In the meantime, I am sure you will be giving your readers enough to keep them busy with the drama there at the WCBOE. Thanks for your time.

Fundraiser At Market Street Inn A Huge Success

First I'd like to thank Rob Mulford and his Family, (and Staff) for hosting this event. Unfortunately, because I was so ill yesterday I could not attend. However, that didn't stop our advertisers from making a $1,000.00 pledge. I am awaiting more concrete numbers for a total but right out of the gate there was a $500.00 donation and immediately following was another $200.00 donation and the event had just started.

If Eric Ludwig wasn't such a nice guy, a BIG guy, with a HUGE heart, yes, somewhat broken but fixed now, I doubt many would have participated. However, this shows when you live life from the heart and "Pay It Forward" it comes back in a very big way.

Now get back to work Eric, I look like a hippie!
