Fatal Crashes Spike in Delaware

Delaware– The Delaware State Police have seen a recent spike in fatal crashes across the entire state.  In conjunction with the Delaware Office of Highways Safety, we are working together to provide our citizens with a few traffic safety reminders.
The majority of fatal crashes are attributed to some form of distracted driving.  This involves the driver failing to provide the proper time and attention to the roadway and to the task of driving.  Other high-risk behaviors of motorists include impaired driving, speeding, unsafe driving behaviors including the use of electronic devices and the failure of motorists and passengers alike to wear seat belts.
Traffic Safety Tips:
Limit distractions: Using your cell phone, texting, and fiddling with the radio or GPS should all be done when you are at a complete stop or avoided altogether.  Give 100% of your attention to the road.
Walk Smart: Distracted walking, wearing dark clothing, and walking under the influence are common factors in pedestrian crashes in Delaware. Wear bright clothing, carry a flashlight, keep your head up and keep your eyes on the road and surrounding areas. Catch a cab or rideshare lift, or have a designated driver take you home. Walking under impairment is never worth the risk.
Slow Down:  Reducing speeds and/or maintaining safer speeds.  Avoid the fast lane if possible.  If you are in the center or far-right lanes, you are more able to maneuver away from a potentially dangerous situation than if you are in the fast lane.
Be Attentive: Never just assume that a driver is going to stop or turn. It’s better to assume they may not!  For example, when going through a red light, still look both ways to check if anyone is going to run the light.  Not only do drunk drivers often run red lights, but so do distracted drivers.
Driving Under the Influence: Whether it be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, impaired driving is a crime.  Before drinking, please designate a sober driver and give that person your keys. If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely.
Wear Your Seatbelt: One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up. Understand the potentially fatal consequences of not wearing a seat belt and learn what you can do to make sure you and your family are properly buckled up every time.
“The Office of Highway Safety is currently running our pedestrian, occupant protection, and distracted driving campaigns and enforcements in every county. We want the public to be aware of actions they can take to protect themselves on Delaware roadways. October is Pedestrian Safety Month. Please walk bright and walk smartly by wearing bright clothes, carrying a flashlight, and being aware when crossing Delaware’s busy roads,” Cynthia Cavett, Marketing Specialist II and Public Information Officer, Delaware Office of Highway Safety.
The risk of being involved in a crash is greatly reduced for anyone operating a motor vehicle by eliminating distractions, paying attention, obeying the speed limit, and not driving under the influence.  The Delaware State Police issue these traffic safety reminders and wish you safe travels as you reach your destination.
If you or someone you know is a victim or witness of crime or have lost a loved one to a sudden death and are in need of assistance, the Delaware State Police Victim Services Unit/Delaware Victim Center is available to offer you support and resources 24 hours a day through a toll free hotline 1800 VICTIM-1. (1800 842-8461).  You may also email the unit Director at debra.reed@state.de.us.

Sen. Rubio: America Is Coming Apart — Here’s How We Start The Revival

You can judge the health of a nation by the strength of its families. Are Americans having and raising children? Are we giving parents opportunities for stable jobs and the other requisite tools to raise healthy kids? When we look at the next generation, are we offering them a path to successful lives ahead?

Too often, our answer is “no.”

Many of the problems facing kids today, including poverty, housing, and poor health outcomes, are alarming and require our attention. But some of the most pressing issues today are new and represent a cultural crisis unique to younger generations.

Report: 95% of tested baby foods in the US contain toxic metals

Toxic heavy metals damaging to your baby's brain development are likely in the baby food you are feeding your infant, according to a new investigation published Thursday.

Tests of 168 baby foods from major manufacturers in the U.S. found 95% contained lead, 73% contained arsenic, 75% contained cadmium and 32% contained mercury. One fourth of the foods contained all four heavy metals.

One in five baby foods tested had over 10 times the 1-ppb limit of lead endorsed by public health advocates, although experts agree that no level of lead is safe.

Mark Allen, retired soldier paralyzed in search for Bowe Bergdahl, dead at 46

A retired soldier who was shot in the head while searching for US Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl in Afghanistan a decade ago has died of complications from the injury, according to reports.

Master Sgt. Mark Allen, of Loganville, Georgia, was severely wounded in 2009 when he and other troops looked for Bergdahl, an Army private who deserted his post and was captured by the Taliban.

Allen, who died Saturday at age 46, was shot during an insurgent ambush in 2009, when he was left paralyzed over much of his body and unable to speak after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

His wife, Shannon Allen, has told WSB Radio that she did not learn about the circumstances surrounding her husband’s injuries until 2014, after former President Barack Obama negotiated Bergdahl’s release in a swap for five Taliban members held at Guantanamo Bay.

More than $200k settlement for woman who's tampon was pulled out on side of road

SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio has reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit involving a woman who had her tampon pulled out on a public street by a San Antonio police officer who thought she might be in possession of drugs.

In August 2016, Natalie D. Simms was sitting on a curb on a public side-street, talking on her phone while waiting for her boyfriend.

According to the lawsuit, Simms drove to the location and parked her car across the street from where she was sitting.

While she was outside, San Antonio police officers arrived at the scene and stated that they thought Simms "might possess illegal drugs."

Poll Shows Kamala Harris Tanking in Iowa Despite Strategy to ‘F*cking’ Move There

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is tanking in Iowa – despite a switch in campaign strategies to blitz the state, sarcastically telling a colleague in September that she is “f*cking moving” to the Hawkeye State – Emerson Polling results released this week reveal.

The California senator has experienced a steady decline in both national and early primary and caucus state polls in recent weeks. The trend was seemingly sparked by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s (D-HI) pointed attack on Harris’s controversial prosecutorial record – jailing hundreds of people for marijuana violations and later making light of smoking marijuana – during the Democrat debate in July.

Harris signaled a switch in campaign strategies in September, telling a colleague that she is “f*cking moving to Iowa.”

The 16th Amendment: How the U.S. Federal Income Tax Became D.C.’s Favorite Political Weapon

The American Revolution was sparked in part by unjust taxation. After all, the colonists in Boston rebelled against Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” and summarily tossed English tea into the harbor in protest in 1773.

Nowadays Americans collectively spend more than 6 billion hours each year filling out tax forms, keeping records, and learning new tax rules according to the Office of Management and Budget. Complying with the byzantine U.S. tax code is estimated to cost the American economy hundreds of billions of dollars annually – time and money that could otherwise be used for more productive activities like entrepreneurship and investment, or just more family and leisure time.

The majority of these six billion hours sacrificed by Americans to Washington each year goes to complying with a tax that didn’t even exist until 100 years ago – the federal income tax.

Worse still, this tax has become a political weapon for Washington to incentivize certain activities (home ownership, charitable giving, etc.) and to punish others. It’s a tax that follows Americans wherever they go in the world, and it’s one that was originally sold to the American people by President Woodrow Wilson as a means of “soaking the rich” during the so-called Gilded Age.

Ex-roommate 'made a mother watch while he stabbed her young children to death

Gruesome new details have emerged about a 2017 triple homicide involving an Arkansas mother and her two young children, including how one of their attackers allegedly forced the woman to watch as he butchered her son and daughter, before knifing her to death.

The disturbing information was presented to Little Rocks jurors on Wednesday during opening statements in the trial of 26-year-old Michael Collins.

Collins and his brother, 23-year-old William Alexander, have been charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery in the stabbing deaths of Mariah Cunningham, five-year-old A'Layliah Fisher and four-year-old Elijah Fisher during the December 2017 home invasion.

Department of Justice Prosecuted a Record-Breaking Number of Immigration-Related Cases in Fiscal Year 2019

The Justice Department today announced that in fiscal year 2019 (FY19), its U.S. Attorneys’ Offices prosecuted the highest number of immigration-related offenses since record keeping began more than 25 years ago. These numbers successfully reverse the trend in previous years of declining prosecutions for felony Illegal Reentry defendants, misdemeanor Improper Entry defendants and felony Alien Smuggling defendants.

“These record-breaking numbers are a testament to the dedication of our U.S. Attorneys’ Offices throughout the nation, especially our Southwest border offices,” said Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen. “In addition to the usual workload of each case the Department prosecutes, this effort was made possible after our U.S. Attorneys’ Offices restored essential partnerships with national, state and local law-enforcement partners.”

The newly announced numbers show the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices charged 25,426 defendants with felony Illegal Reentry (8 U.S.C. §1326) in FY19, an increase of 8.5 percent from FY18.

'Organized destruction': William Barr blasts 'militant secularists' over assault on religion

Attorney General William P. Barr offered a withering evisceration of anti-religious sentiment last week, defending the central role of Judeo-Christian moral standards in American democracy, accusing “militant secularists” of an assault on religion that’s become as intolerant as religions they criticize.

“Those who defy the creed risk a figurative burning at the stake — social, educational, and professional ostracism and exclusion waged through lawsuits and savage social media campaigns,” he said.

He added: “Militant secularists today do not have a ‘live and let live’ spirit — they are not content to leave religious people alone to practice their faith. Instead, they seem to take a delight in compelling people to violate their conscience.”

National Average Rent Drops For First Time In 2 Years As US Property Market Sags

Here's the latest sign that the US housing market is in the early phases of a nation-wide retreat: For the first time in two years, average national monthly rents declined on a QoQ basis - even as the national average rent continued to climb (up 3.2%) on a YoY basis.

Corresponding with the summer slowdown (a period when the rental market is at its slowest), the national average rent decreased for the first time since February 2017, declining by 0.1% - or $1 - from last month to $1,471, according to Rent Cafe's quarterly report on the American market for rental housing.

The decrease might seem insignificant, but combined with the slowest year-over-year hike in the past 13 months - 3.2% ($45) - it suggests a slight wind-down in rent prices against the backdrop of a more volatile financial climate, according to Yardi Matrix.

Berlin Paid $68K To Terminate Allen

BERLIN – Town officials announced this week severance pay to Berlin’s former town administrator amounted to slightly more than $68,000.

At a meeting of the Berlin Town Council Tuesday, officials shared that firing Laura Allen cost the town $68,048.89.

“I know from a professional perspective this is an extremely conservative severance package,” said Jeff Fleetwood, who is now the acting town administrator.

Allen was fired in September, when officials criticized her handling of a chemical spill at Heron Park, among other issues. Her contract ran from January 2017 to June of 2021, according to Fleetwood.

“The contract was not paid out in its duration,” he said. “Payout was actually three months of regular pay plus all accrued vacation and sick time.”

Washington Post Poll Spells Trouble for Kirwan Funding

A Washington Post poll released today shows trouble for Maryland Democrats committed to fully funding the Kirwan Commission recommendations.

The WaPo/University of Maryland Poll, despite having flaws and the appearance of bias, has a couple of key points of information that are relevant to Democrats.

First, most Marylanders still aren’t aware the Kirwan Commission exists.

7. How much, if anything, have you heard or read about the Kirwan Commission on state education funding? Have you heard or read a lot, a little or nothing at all?

Newt Gingrich: We Are Witnessing ‘the Death of the Democrat Party’

The Democrat Party is radicalizing so quickly that it makes even the Clinton and Obama administrations seem centrist, states former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in an op-ed Wednesday.

“Tuesday night’s debate was one more reminder that we are living through the death of the Democrat Party,” Gingrich declares, as we watch it mutate before our eyes into the “Democrat-Socialist Party.”

We are living in “a historic moment in which a once-great American party is transformed into an anti-American engine of radical change,” Gingrich observes. “In 2020, every Democrat candidate will be faced with the challenge of defending a national party which is now the Democratic-Socialist Party.”

In Tuesday’s debate, candidates were falling over each other to establish their far-left creds, leaving behind the platforms of the last two Democrat administrations as a vestige of relative moderation.

“Imagine that any candidate last night had had the courage (or lack of sense) to actively defend President Bill Clinton’s policies on welfare reform, capital gains tax cuts, balanced federal budgets, or his 1996 State of the Union assertion that ‘the era of Big Government is over,’” Gingrich muses.

Former Md. delegate pleads guilty to wire fraud charge

GREENBELT, Maryland — Former Maryland Delegate Tawanna Gaines, D-Prince George’s, pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal wire fraud charge in the U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, after prosecutors say she used an undisclosed PayPal account to defraud campaign contributors.

Gaines, 67, was charged earlier this month with using the account to accept donations to her campaign finance committee, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland. Those funds were not recorded on her campaign finance reports.

Federal prosecutors say Gaines, who had represented District 22 — which includes cities like Greenbelt and Hyattsville — since 2001, defrauded her campaign and its contributors of approximately $22,000 over a period of at least three years.

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — Former Delegate Tawanna Gaines, D-Prince George’s, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on a federal wire fraud charge, adding to an already-long list of Maryland lawmakers — largely Democrats — who have been convicted, charged or reprimanded for corruption or other ethical issues in recent years.

Brian Griffiths: Maryland should reject the Preakness deal

For years, politicians have sought a solution that would keep the Preakness in Baltimore. After months-long negotiations between the City of Baltimore and the track owners, a complex deal has been struck between the two parties to keep the race in Baltimore and to ensure both Pimlico and Laurel Park are renovated.

This is great if you think that the City of Baltimore’s most important goal is to keep the Preakness and that they should be facilitating a big payday for the Stronach Group. But here’s the thing which is the biggest problem for Maryland taxpayers: the state would be on the hook to provide $375 million in funding by floating bonds for the project, a tiny-problem that would require a number of changes in state law.

If you’re thinking “this is a bad deal for Maryland taxpayers,” you’re right.

Guidance Sought On Homeless Issue At Transit Centers; Progress Reported By Outreach Team

OCEAN CITY – Homeless individuals and weekend visitors sleeping in public areas in and around the resort highlighted this week’s meeting of the Ocean City Police Commission.

On Wednesday, officials with the resort’s public works department came before the Ocean City Police Commission to highlight the growing number of homeless individuals sleeping at transit facilities and weekend visitors sleeping in the Inlet parking lot and along the beach.

“We have an issue, as you are probably already aware of, and we wanted to just remind the group as we head into the fall and plan for next summer what we face,” said Public Works Director Hal Adkins.

By way of background, a concerted effort to address the homeless population in Worcester County began last year, as homelessness on the Ocean City Boardwalk – particularly in the area of the Caroline Street comfort station – started to gain the attention of residents, visitors, resort agencies and media outlets.

Report: Adam Schiff Pressured Diplomat to Back ‘Whistleblower’ Narrative

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) attempted to push former U.S. Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker to testify during his secret deposition early this month in favor of the allegation that President Donald Trump leveraged aid to Ukraine in exchange for it investigating Joe Biden and his son. The effort failed.

Despite Republican calls for Schiff, the leader of the Democrats’ impeachment probe, to release the transcript of Volker’s deposition behind closed doors, Schiff has refused to do so. Details of Volkers’ October 3 deposition behind closed doors are still pouring out.

On Wednesday, the Washington Examiner reported:

In a secret interview, Rep. Adam Schiff, leader of the House Democrats effort to impeach President Trump, pressed former United States special representative to Ukraine Kurt Volker to testify that Ukrainian officials felt pressured to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter as a result of Trump withholding U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

Volker denied that was the case, noting that Ukrainian leaders did not even know the aid was being withheld and that they believed their relationship with the U.S. was moving along satisfactorily, without them having done anything Trump mentioned in his notorious July 25 phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

When Volker repeatedly declined to agree to Schiff’s characterization of events, Schiff said, “Ambassador, you’re making this much more complicated than it has to be.”

WSJ Columnist: This Is When The Deep State Felt They Got The Green Light To Defy Trump

The moment acting Attorney General Sally Yates decided to defy President Trump concerning his executive order on immigration that the media erroneously dubbed the Muslim ban, you saw the vestiges of what we now call the Deep State. It’s the cadre of government workers who are working against the Trump administration in the shadows. They hate the president and will do anything to push back at all costs. It also doesn’t help that there were oodles of Obama holdovers when Trump was inaugurated in 2017.

Anyway, the point is that there is ample evidence that there is a deep state working against the Trump White House. Its members are not really known to the public, and The Wall Street Journal’s Kimberley Strassel details how this anti-democratic club is a cancer to the country in her new book “Resistance at All Costs: How Trump Haters are Breaking America.”

Strassel notes that former CIA Director John Brennan and fired FBI Director James Comey are some of the folks used as examples of deep state antics. Their conduct was less than honorable; Comey’s was worthy of termination, which Trump promptly did in May 2017. The Department of Justice’s inspector general report makes that quite clear. Yet, she notes these are political appointments that are subject to scrutiny and can be removed.

Dems Play Political Theater in Walkout of Trump Meeting

President Donald Trump intended a White House meeting with congressional leaders from both parties to be an opportunity to confront the bipartisan opposition to his decision to pull U.S. troops out of northern Syria. But it quickly descended into political theater as Democrats, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, suddenly stood up and left the meeting.

Rushing to the media like a bunch of schoolyard children running to the nearest teacher to tattle on a particularly disliked peer, Pelosi and company huffed that Trump had a “meltdown.” They further claimed that Trump had called Pelosi “a third-rate politician” — or was it “a third-grade politician”? They weren’t sure. But Pelosi was sure that Trump was so unhinged that she patronizingly announced, “I pray for the president all the time. … Now we have to pray for his health — because this was a very serious meltdown on the part of the president.”

Democrats claimed that Trump was so disrespectful that they couldn’t take it anymore and left. The White House, on the other hand, found Democrat behavior “baffling, but not surprising.”
