8-5-10 Jamar Marquel Tenner of Crisfield, arrested for two warrants regarding cds violations and failing to appear in court. Tenner was spotted in the Greenwood area of Princess Anne while deputies were conducting foot patols. After Tenner spotted deputies he fled on foot. K-9 officer Daum conducted a k-9 track, which led deputies to a tool shed in the area of Greenwood Rd. Deputies found Tenner hiding in the shed, and was later taken into custody. Tenner was later held on a $ 50, 000 bond.
8-5-10 Bopaphourng Touch and David Roper of Philadelphia Pennsylvania, arrested on drug charges. The arrests were a result of a traffic stop conducted by deputies on Ocean Highway, Westover. Deputies recovered marijuana from the vehicle. Both subjects were later released on personal recognizance pending trial.
8-6-10 Kevin Eugene Jackson of Crisfield, arrested on a warrant regarding violation of probation. Jackson was later held on a $ 50,000 bond.
8-11-10 Francis William Parks Jr. of Ewell, arrested on a warrant regarding harassment and theft. Deputies were escorted to Smith Island by Cpl. Tyler of the Natural Resource Police. Parks was later released on personal recognizance.
8-11-10 James Joseph Johnson Sr. of Princess Anne, arrested for possession of suspected cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. The arrest was a result of a traffic stop conducted by deputies in the area of Somerset Ave, Princess Anne. Deputies recovered suspected cocaine, and a homemade pipe. Johnson was later released on a $ 1,000 unsecured bond pending trial.

Florida AG McCollum Pushes New Immigration Law Tougher Than Arizona's
Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum has proposed a tough new law aimed at curbing illegal immigration that he said would go further than a bill signed into law in Arizona.
"Florida will not be a sanctuary state for illegal aliens.”
McCollum, who is battling businessman Rick Scott for the GOP nomination for governor in Florida, said state Rep. Will Snyder intends to introduce the immigration bill at the next session of the legislature.
“The law will propose to mandate that police officers, when they make a stop, detention, or arrest, have to check to see if somebody’s status is legal or illegal,” McCollum said.
“Currently they are permitted to do [but not required] so it’s voluntary.
“They also, at the time they stop or arrest somebody, will have to have a reasonable suspicion that that person is an illegal before they make that check.
“And there is a specific provision in the bill that says there shall not be any racial profiling.”

Pima Indians of Arizona have the world's highest diabetes rates. With knowledge that his patient is a Pima Indian, it would probably be a best practice for a physician to order more thorough blood glucose tests to screen for diabetes.
Prostate cancer is nearly twice as common among black men as white men. It would also be a best practice for a physician to be attentive to -- even risk false positive PSAs -- prostate cancer among his black patients.
What about physicians who order routine mammograms for their 40-year and older female patients but not their male patients? The American Cancer Society predicts that about 400 men will die of breast cancer this year.
Because of a correlation between race, sex and disease, the physician is using a cheap-to-observe characteristic, such as race or sex, as an estimate for a more costly-to-observe characteristic, the presence of a disease. The physician is practicing both race and sex profiling.

ICE Agents Vote 'No Confidence' In Leaders, Say Amnesty Coming
The union that represents rank-and-file field agents at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has unanimously passed a "vote of no confidence" for the agency's leadership, saying ICE has "abandoned" its core mission of protecting the public to support a political agenda favoring amnesty.
The National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 7,000 ICE agents and employees, voted 259-0 for a resolution saying there was "growing dissatisfaction and concern" over the leadership of Assistant Secretary John Morton, who heads ICE, and Phyllis Coven, assistant director for the agency's office of detention policy and planning.
The resolution said ICE leadership had "abandoned the agency's core mission of enforcing U.S. immigration laws and providing for public safety," instead directing its attention "to campaigning for programs and policies related to amnesty and the creation of a special detention system for foreign nationals that exceeds the care and services provided to most U.S. citizens similarly incarcerated.
"It is the desire of our union … to publicly separate ourselves from the actions of Director Morton and Assistant Director Coven and publicly state that ICE officers and employees do not support Morton or Coven or their misguided and reckless initiatives, which could ultimately put many in America at risk," the union said.
In a strongly worded statement, the union and its affiliated local councils said the integrity of the agency "as well as the public safety" would be "better provided for in the absence of Director Morton and Assistant Director Coven."

Every Bill Should State Its Constitutional Authority, Republican Congressman Says
A Republican congressman says all bills introduced in Congress should include a statement setting forth the specific constitutional authority under which a law is being enacted.
Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) says his Enumerated Powers Act will force Congress to re-examine the role of the national government and curb its "ever-expanding reach."
"For too long, the federal government has operated without Constitutional restraint, creating ineffective and costly programs and massive deficits year after year," Shadegg writes on AmericaSpeakingOut, a Republican Web site that seeks ideas from the American people.
Shadegg says the trend of Congress overstepping its role has gotten "alarmingly worse" in the past 18 months.
Half Of Democrats Favor Punishing Soldiers Who Oppose Homosexuality, Survey Finds
A nationwide survey of 1,000 likely voters found that 59 percent of Democrats think that members of Congress should consider the opinions of homosexual advocacy groups over the opinions of top military commanders when considering a repeal of the law prohibiting homosexuality in the military.
The survey also showed that half of Democrats support penalizing soldiers opposed to homosexuality, including those who oppose it for religious reasons.
“Americans understand that the current push for sexual minorities in the military is motivated by politics, not principle,” Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, said in a statement about the poll results on Tuesday.
The survey also showed that half of Democrats support penalizing soldiers opposed to homosexuality, including those who oppose it for religious reasons.

Where's The ACLU?
The State Department is sending Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf - the mastermind of the Ground Zero Mosque - on a trip through the Middle East to foster "greater understanding" about Islam and Muslim communities in the United States. However, important questions are being raised about whether this is simply a taxpayer-funded fundraising jaunt to underwrite his reviled project, which is moving ahead in Lower Manhattan.
Mr. Rauf is scheduled to go to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar, the usual stops for Gulf-based fundraising. The State Department defends the five-country tour saying that Mr. Rauf is "a distinguished Muslim cleric," but surely the government could find another such figure in the United States who is not seeking millions of dollars to fund a construction project that has so strongly divided America.
By funding the trip so soon after New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission gave the go-ahead to demolish the building on the proposed mosque site, the State Department is creating the appearance that the U.S. government is facilitating the construction of this shameful structure. It gives Mr. Rauf not only access but imprimatur to gather up foreign cash. And because Mr. Rauf has refused to reveal how he plans to finance his costly venture, the American public is left with the impression it will be a wholly foreign enterprise. This contradicts the argument that a mosque is needed in that part of New York City to provide services for a burgeoning Muslim population. If so many people need the mosque so badly, presumably they could figure out a way to pay for it themselves.
Americans also may be surprised to learn that the United States has been an active participant in mosque construction projects overseas. In April, U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Alfonso E. Lenhardt helped cut the ribbon at the 12th-century Kizimkazi Mosque, which was refurbished with assistance from the United States under a program to preserve culturally significant buildings. The U.S. government also helped save the Amr Ebn El Aas Mosque in Cairo, which dates back to 642. The mosque's namesake was the Muslim conqueror of Christian Egypt, who built the structure on the site where he had pitched his tent before doing battle with the country's Byzantine rulers. For those who think the Ground Zero Mosque is an example of "Muslim triumphalism" glorifying conquest, the Amr Ebn El Aas Mosque is an example of such a monument - and one paid for with U.S. taxpayer funds.
The mosques being rebuilt by the United States are used for religious worship, which raises important First Amendment questions. U.S. taxpayer money should not be used to preserve and promote Islam, even abroad. In July 2009, the Office of the Inspector General published an audit of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) faith-based and community initiatives that examined whether government funds were being used for religious activities. The auditors found that while USAID was funding some religious activities, officials were "uncertain of whether such uses of Agency funding violate Agency regulations or the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution" when balanced against foreign-policy objectives.

Outrage! Cuts To Food Stamps To Fund $26B Union Payoff Bill
Some Democrats are upset and advocacy groups are outraged over the raiding of the food-stamp cupboard to fund a state-aid bailout that some call a gift to teachers and government union workers.
House members convened Tuesday and passed the multibillion-dollar bailout bill for cash-strapped states that provides $10 billion to school districts to rehire laid-off teachers or ensure that more teachers won't be let go before the new school year begins, keeping more than 160,000 teachers on the job, the Obama administration says.
But the bill also requires that $12 billion be stripped from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, to help fund the new bill, prompting some Democrats to cringe at the notion of cutting back on one necessity to pay for another. The federal assistance program currently helps 41 million Americans.
Arguably one of the most outspoken opponents on the Democratic side is Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who has blasted the move as “a bitter pill to swallow” but still voted yes.
“I fought very hard for the food assistance money in the Recovery Act, and the fact is that participation in the food stamps program has jumped dramatically with the economic crisis, from 31.1 million persons to 38.2 million just in one year,” DeLauro said in an e-mail sent to FoxNews.com. “But I know that states across the nation and my own state of Connecticut also desperately need these resources to save jobs and avoid Draconian cuts to essential services for low income families.”
Republicans vocally opposed the state aid bill. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told Fox News it rewarded "irresponsible states" and their unions.
"It is basically taxpayers from fiscally (responsible) states bailing out fiscally irresponsible states. ... Medicaid funding, teacher funding, the more popular of the public unions, what this is, it's a bailout to prevent states from doing the necessary spending prioritization that they need do," he said.
The Obama administration pushed hard for the $26 billion bill. The White House argued that it is essential to protecting 300,000 teachers and other nonfederal government workers from election-year layoffs and will not add to the national deficit.

About 8 percent of children born in the United States in 2008 — about 340,000 — were offspring of unauthorized immigrants, according to an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Pew Hispanic Center released on Wednesday.
The center said that unauthorized immigrants compose about 4 percent of the adult population, but because they are relatively young and have high birthrates, their children make up a much larger share of the newborn population and the child population (7 percent of those younger than age 18).

But the Air Force investigation into his sexuality continued. Now, just a year from completing his 20th year in the military, Colonel Fehrenbach, 40, believes he is about to be discharged under the policy known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.” He would be among the highest-ranking service members discharged under the policy.
On Wednesday, Colonel Fehrenbach’s lawyers filed papers in Idaho federal court requesting a temporary order blocking his discharge. The petition contends that a discharge would violate Colonel Fehrenbach’s rights, cause him irreparable harm and fail to meet standards established in a 2008 federal court ruling on don’t ask, don’t tell.

On August 10, 2010 at approximately 11:49 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police were on routine patrol in the area of East Railroad Avenue and Elizabeth Street and stopped a vehicle for traffic violations. A routine records check revealed that the driver was operating the vehicle on a suspended out of state license. The driver was cited and released on his signature. The vehicle was checked, with the assistance of a Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office K-9, and a quantity of suspected cocaine and a weighing device were found in a case in the possession of the below listed suspect.

On August 11, 2010 at approximately 3:15 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police arrested the below listed suspect for a strong-armed robbery that occurred earlier on the same date.
On the same date at approximately 2:00 am it was reported to the Salisbury Police that a male victim had been robbed by three (3) unknown suspects while operating a bicycle in the area of Delaware Avenue and West Main Street. The victim reported that while operating the bicycle he stopped and became involved in a conversation with the three (3) suspects. One of the suspects then struck the victim, knocking the victim off of the bicycle. The suspects then took the bicycle and an amount of U.S. Currency that the victim had in his pants pocket.
A witness alerted officers to the below listed suspects, who were positively identified by the victim. The victim was not injured and did not require medical attention. The investigation is continuing in regards to the third suspect.

On August 11, 2010 at approximately 3:15 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police arrested the below listed suspect for a strong-armed robbery that occurred earlier on the same date.
On the same date at approximately 2:00 am it was reported to the Salisbury Police that a male victim had been robbed by three (3) unknown suspects while operating a bicycle in the area of Delaware Avenue and West Main Street. The victim reported that while operating the bicycle he stopped and became involved in a conversation with the three (3) suspects. One of the suspects then struck the victim, knocking the victim off of the bicycle. The suspects then took the bicycle and an amount of U.S. Currency that the victim had in his pants pocket.
A witness alerted officers to the below listed suspects, who were positively identified by the victim. The victim was not injured and did not require medical attention. The investigation is continuing in regards to the third suspect.

SAN FRANCISCO — The federal judge who overturned California's same-sex marriage ban will rule Thursday on whether gay marriages should resume immediately in the state or await an appeals court's input.
Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said he would issue his decision by noon on requests to impose a stay that would keep Proposition 8 in effect while its sponsors appeal his decision.
California voters passed the ban in November 2008, five months after the state Supreme Court legalized gay marriage.
Walker last week struck it down as an unconstitutional violation of gay Californians' civil rights.

Chesapeake Bay Bacteria Making People Sick
BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland health officials say people may be getting sick from eating raw oysters and other shellfish from the Chesapeake Bay.
The culprit is vibrio, a naturally occurring bacteria that's more prevalent in the bay during hot weather.
The state health department says there have been 24 cases of vibrio infection this year. That puts Maryland on pace to exceed the infection totals from previous years. Vibrio can cause wound infections, gastrointestinal disease and other ailments. People with open wounds who swim in the bay are also at risk.

Md. Institute Hopes For Gates Grant To Test AIDS Vaccine
The Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore hopes to find out in the next few weeks whether it will get a $25 million grant from the Gates Foundation to begin testing the AIDS vaccine it has developed, with clinical trials in Maryland.
Dr. Robert Gallo, who led the discovery of the virus that caused AIDS, told the state Board of Public Works that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation asked them to come to Seattle to discuss the grant application. In 2007, the foundation gave $15 million to Gallo’s institute, part of the University of Maryland Medical School, to develop a vaccine to prevent AIDS.

East Point Begins Taking Housing Applications Early
East Point housing officials began accepting Section 8 applications 90 minutes early Thursday morning after crowds of people showed up to turn in the forms.
A day after a crowd of 30,000 mobbed a shopping center to pick up the forms, a small crowd of less than a dozen people began lining up around 5 a.m. The group was dispersed by East Point police about an hour later. But shortly after 7 a.m., officials allowed people to line up on the sidewalk adjacent to the building. There were about 50 people in line at 7:30, when officials brought out boxes and began to accept the applications. That process had been scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Police used cones to set up a special lane on Norman Berry Drive where people could drop off their forms without getting out of their cars. An official with a box was collecting the applications and telling people the forms would be stamped with 9 a.m. today's date and then moving them back into traffic.
Officials appeared to be going the extra mile to accommodate the crowd, and the effort appeared to be paying off as the process was going much more smoothly than on Wednesday.

COLONEL SHERIDAN ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF OF FIELD OPERATIONS
(Pikesville, MD) Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Terrence B. Sheridan announces the appointment and promotion of a new Chief of the Field Operations Bureau.
Major W.F. “Pete” Landon, 48, will be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Chief of the Field Operations Bureau. The promotion is effective today.
Lt. Colonel Landon is a 25-year veteran of the Maryland State Police. He most recently served as the Assistant Bureau Chief of the Field Operations Bureau, which he began in 2004. Landon was in charge of the Special Operations Division, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division.
As the Chief of the Field Operations Bureau, Lt. Colonel Landon will assume command of the largest of the three Maryland State Police bureaus. The Field Operations Bureau encompasses all uniformed patrol troopers stationed at all barracks, and specialized units such as the Aviation Command, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Automotive Safety Enforcement Division and the Special Operations Division. The other two bureaus are the Support Services Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Lt. Colonel Landon graduated from the Maryland State Police 89th Academy Class in July 1985. He immediately began his career as a patrol trooper at the Centreville Barracks where he consistently led the barrack in areas of traffic enforcement and criminal investigation. He was awarded Barrack Trooper of the Year in 1988. In 1989, as Trooper First Class, he was assigned to Easton Barracks.
Early in his career, Lt. Colonel Landon served in the Training Division Drug and Education Units at both the Annapolis and Salisbury Barracks, where he was responsible for the certification, initiation and coordination of all drug and criminal investigation training. He received numerous awards for exceptional job performance.
He continued to climb the ranks holding several command positions including Assistant Commander of the Training Division, Commander of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Commander of the Easton Barracks, the largest geographical command in the Department of State Police, and Commander of the Northern Troop, which includes Bel Air Barrack, North East Barrack and Westminster Barrack. Since it’s inception, Lt. Colonel Landon has been heavily involved with Special Olympics Maryland. Residents Who Live Near Public Transportation Live Healthier, Study Finds
Wilmington -- A new report, released by the American Public Transportation Association on August 8, 2010, which surveys current research has found that people who live in communities with high-quality public transportation drive less, exercise more, live longer, and are generally healthier than residents of communities that lack quality public transit.
Evaluating Public Transportation Health Benefits, a study conducted for APTA by Todd Litman of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute aggregates the findings of several recent studies and concludes that people living in transit-oriented smart growth communities enjoy several health benefits, not seen in other communities, including residents drive less, exposing them to a lower risk of fatal vehicle accidents.
Such communities also have less pollution, because public transportation produces far less emissions per passenger mile than private automobiles. In addition, people who live near quality public transit are more likely to undertake regular physical activity than residents of automobile-dependent communities.
Public transportation enhances the overall quality of life of an individual and a community, said APTA president William Millar. Use of public transit simply means that you walk more which increases fitness levels and leads to healthier citizens. More importantly, increasing use of public transit may be the most effective traffic safety counter measure a community can employ.
The APTA report notes, transportation activity also plays a role in lessening the
individual risk in five of the 10 leading causes of reduced lifespan, as identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A recent CDC study evaluated causes of potential years of life lost, including cancer, heart disease, motor vehicle crashes, and other causes. For example, Pollution contributes to cancer and congenital anomalies [birth defects], and sedentary living ... contributes to heart disease and strokes, Litman wrote.
One solution is smart growth communities, according to Litman, who cited a 2003 study finding that urban residents had significantly lower violent death rates, whether from vehicle accidents or other causes.
Litman also noted that the 10 U.S. Counties with the smartest, most transit-oriented growth have approximately one-fourth the traffic fatality rates as those counties with the most sprawling development. For example, the traffic fatality rate for the Bronx, NY was approximately four per 100,000 residents. However, for Miami, KS, the rate was almost 40 per 100,000.
Moreover, other recent studies have found that users of public transportation walk more than those who do not use public transit, regardless of income.

Regressive Tax Disproportionately Hurts Low Income Families and Small Businesses
DUNDALK -- Bob Ehrlich met with Baltimore County families today to discuss the need to roll back Governor Martin O’Malley’s 20% increase in the sales tax in order to boost Maryland’s economy. He also pledged that he would oppose any effort in the legislature to expand the tax to new goods and services. Maryland lawmakers recently considered expanding the sales tax to 43 new services, including cell phones, gym memberships, and tax preparation.
“Leading an economic recovery in Maryland is my top priority,” Ehrlich said. “To reach that goal, we have to lower the tax burden on families and small businesses. By raising taxes on the eve of a recession in 2007, Governor O’Malley siphoned sorely-needed dollars from families who are now more likely to shop in neighboring states that have lower sales taxes. If I’m elected Governor, I’ll cut the sales tax to encourage more shopping here in Maryland and I will oppose any effort in the legislature to extend this regressive tax to more goods and services.”

For instance, the tax increase has twice the economic impact on an individual making $20,000 as it does an individual making $70,000, according to Maryland legislative analysts. On August 10, 2010 at approximately 9:13 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police were on routine patrol in the area of Rt. 13 and North Boulevard and stopped to assist a disabled vehicle operated by below listed suspect # 1. As the officer assisted the operator, the officer detected the scent of suspected marijuana emanating from the interior of the vehicle. The vehicle was checked and suspected marijuana was found on the center console and on the back seat. The passenger (suspect #2) was removed from the vehicle and attempted to discard a baggie of suspected marijuana under the vehicle. The bag was recovered and the passenger was also arrested.

Bob Ehrlich To Visit Rosecroft Raceway, Site Of 200 Layoffs
ANNAPOLIS – Bob Ehrlich will convene a roundtable tomorrow with Marylanders impacted by the closure of Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland. The track’s owners announced in June they would be closing the track and laying off 200 workers. Ehrlich stated at the time that the closure was a sobering reminder of Maryland’s inability to implement a viable gaming program over the past four years.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. last night as a trooper on routine patrol observed a white Oldsmobile traveling on I-95 southbound in the area of DE. Rt. 141 in Newport. The trooper observed that the front seat passenger was no wearing a seatbelt. After conducting a stop of the vehicle, the trooper came into contact with the operator, later identified as Jethroe Tickles of Wilmington, DE, and the passenger, later identified as Shareef Hargrove, of Newark, DE. While questioning the occupants of the vehicle, the trooper observed that both men were acting in a suspicious and nervous manner. The trooper asked for and obtained consent to search the vehicle. As defendant Tickles exited the vehicle, several pills fell to the ground from his pants leg. A further search of Tickles revealed $341.00 in suspected drug sale proceeds which was seized. Upon searching the vehicle, the trooper located a loaded .45 caliber handgun, 30.5 grams of marijuana, 9.5 grams of crack cocaine and a digital scale used to weigh drugs. The defendants were then taken into custody and charged with the above listed crimes.

It was four years ago today, Salisbury News went to the Wicomico Humane Society and started taking pictures to publish on Salisbury News for adoptions. Since that time we have adopted out literally hundreds of animals. While we used to get pictures in from the Humane Society to publish, all too often they would run completely out of animals once they were advertised on Salisbury News.
Today, we try our best to host animals on our own adoption website, proving we can lower the volume on animals being sent in to the Humane Society and save the taxpayers quite a bit of money. This also keeps the volume of inventory down at the Humane Society, giving these animals a better chance of survival without having to be euthanized.

America's unemployment rate remained at a steep 9.5 percent in the July jobs report released Aug. 6, and the government's broader measure that combines unemployment and underemployment is even higher at 16.5 percent.
That's bad news for the job prospects of most workers, from blue-collar employees looking to earn a paycheck at a retail store or on a factory floor to white-collar managers seeking a spot in a cubicle or an office. But the unemployment numbers seem positively dire for teenagers. The jobless rate for teenagers 16 to 19 years old was 26.1 percent in July, up from around 15 percent before the recession struck.

Delaware State Police Monday August 9, 2010 responded to Sharptown Road Laurel to investigate an assault complaint. The assault occurred around 3 p.m.
State Police learned that Daniella and Ruth Blanchard responded to the victim’s residence attempting to initiate a fight. Daniella Blanchard began the altercation over allegations that the 21 year old victim was having a relationship with her boyfriend. The victim called 911 for police to respond to the residence on Sharptown road.
Prior to the Troopers arrival a second 911 call was placed advising that Daniella and Ruth Blanchard had forced their way into the victim’s residence. Once inside Daniella and Ruth located the 21 year victim hiding in a bedroom then began to assault the victim with their hands. At the time of the assault the victim was holding her 3 month old child and fell forward while holding her child. The assault resulted in the 21 year old victim sustaining bruises and abrasions to her arm and head. The 3 month old did not immediately have visible signs of injury; however he was transported to Nanticoke Hospital for precautionary reasons. The child was treated and released in fair condition. The 3 month old is the nephew of the 21 year old victim. The 16 year old victim attempted to protect the 21 year old victim from being assaulted and in the process was attacked however sustained minor injuries.
Delaware State Police shortly thereafter arrested Daniella and Ruth Blanchard each for the above listed charges. Daniella and Ruth were remanded to the Women’s Correctional Institute each on $40,650 secured bond.

This morning I found this large snapping turtle near one of our ponds. That's a 5 gallon bucket next to him, to give you an idea of his size. I transported him a few miles away from our property so he doesn't feed off of our stocked ponds.New Maryland Group Looks At Forming Non-Profit Health Insurance Co-Op
A new statewide group is trying to form a new insurance co-op to provide coverage for people who will be required to have it under the new federal law, but cannot afford it.
The Maryland Nonprofit Health Insurance Co-op is working on a year-long feasibility study to see if it will be able to start its own insurance carrier for those who cannot afford even the cheapest insurance. The proposed co-op would target adults between 19 and 64 living in the state’s I-95 corridor.
By next July, “we should know if it’s a go or a no-go,” said Dr. Peter Beilenson, the Howard County health officer and chairman of the co-op’s steering group.

Delaware State Police Monday August 9, 2010 arrested a Columbia Pennsylvania man linked to multiple burglaries in Holly Lake Campsite and Orchard Manor Millsboro Delaware. The crimes include burglaries of upwards of 40 campers and or sheds spanning a two month period.
In May of this year Pennsylvania State Police (Lancaster) and other surrounding agencies took Anthony Gesford-38, William Knight-22 both of Columbia Pennsylvania and two other individuals into custody for burglaries committed within the state of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania State Police linked Gesford and Knight to approximately 100 burglaries in the Lancaster and Adams County Pennsylvania during a 6 month period.
Subsequent interviews conducted by Pennsylvania authorities revealed Justin C. Englert-18, Gesford, Knight and two additional persons also committed burglaries in the State of Delaware.
As a result of these interviews Delaware State Police was contacted by Pennsylvania State Police detectives. Delaware Troopers discovered Gesford has a camper within Holly Lake Campsite. Gesford, Englert, Knight and others would come to Delaware to perform roof construction work to a residence in Lewes. Delaware State Police executed a search warrant on Gesford’s camper and located alcohol, fishing and camping equipment, DVD player, Nintendo game and four crabs pots from a burglary on March 29, 2010.
State Troopers on Monday August 9, 2010 arrested Justin C. Englert linking him to eight burglaries in the Holly Lake Campsite and three burglaries on Circle Drive Orchard Manor. Englert turned himself into authorities at Troop 4. State Police also have arrest warrants on file at Troop 4 Georgetown for both Gesford and Knight. State Police detectives are also preparing arrest warrants on two other Pennsylvania residents for burglary related crimes. Once Gesford and Knight complete their criminal matters within Pennsylvania they will be extradited to Delaware and face criminal prosecution.

Delaware State Police Monday August 9, 2010 arrested a Columbia Pennsylvania man linked to multiple burglaries in Holly Lake Campsite and Orchard Manor Millsboro Delaware. The crimes include burglaries of upwards of 40 campers and or sheds spanning a two month period.
In May of this year Pennsylvania State Police (Lancaster) and other surrounding agencies took Anthony Gesford-38, William Knight-22 both of Columbia Pennsylvania and two other individuals into custody for burglaries committed within the state of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania State Police linked Gesford and Knight to approximately 100 burglaries in the Lancaster and Adams County Pennsylvania during a 6 month period.
Subsequent interviews conducted by Pennsylvania authorities revealed Justin C. Englert-18, Gesford, Knight and two additional persons also committed burglaries in the State of Delaware.
As a result of these interviews Delaware State Police was contacted by Pennsylvania State Police detectives. Delaware Troopers discovered Gesford has a camper within Holly Lake Campsite. Gesford, Englert, Knight and others would come to Delaware to perform roof construction work to a residence in Lewes. Delaware State Police executed a search warrant on Gesford’s camper and located alcohol, fishing and camping equipment, DVD player, Nintendo game and four crabs pots from a burglary on March 29, 2010.
State Troopers on Monday August 9, 2010 arrested Justin C. Englert linking him to eight burglaries in the Holly Lake Campsite and three burglaries on Circle Drive Orchard Manor. Englert turned himself into authorities at Troop 4. State Police also have arrest warrants on file at Troop 4 Georgetown for both Gesford and Knight. State Police detectives are also preparing arrest warrants on two other Pennsylvania residents for burglary related crimes. Once Gesford and Knight complete their criminal matters within Pennsylvania they will be extradited to Delaware and face criminal prosecution.

President Obama Signs Into Law Ban On Cell Phones In Federal Prisons
Washington (CNN) -- Hoping to stop federal inmates from directing crimes from behind bars, President Barack Obama signed into law Tuesday a prohibition on cell phone use by prisoners.
The law prohibits the use or possession of mobile phones and wireless devices, and calls for up to a year in prison for anyone found guilty of trying to smuggle one to an inmate.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confiscated more than 2,600 cell phones from minimum security facilities and nearly 600 from secure federal institutions last year

Woman Gets $198,000 For Mistaken Mastectomy
LOS ANGELES -- A woman who underwent a double mastectomy and later discovered she didn't have breast cancer was set to receive $198,000 under a settlement approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Ana Jimenez-Salgado had her breasts surgically removed at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center after two outside pathologists determined the cells obtained from an August 2007 biopsy were cancerous.
She later underwent reconstructive surgery. The hospital's pathologists examined tissue obtained during that procedure and concluded she did not have breast cancer.

WASHINGTON — The imam behind controversial plans for a mosque near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks is being sent by the State Department on a religious outreach trip to the Middle East, officials said Tuesday, in a move that drew criticism from conservative lawmakers.
The department is sponsoring Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf's visit to Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, where he will discuss Muslim life in America and promote religious tolerance, spokesman P.J. Crowley said. He said the imam had been on two similar trips and that plans for the upcoming tour predated the mosque controversy.
Two Republican members of Congress, Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Peter King, called government sponsorship of Rauf's trip "unacceptable" in a joint statement. They said he had suggested in at least one interview that the United States was to blame for the 2001 attacks and that taxpayer money should not be used to fund the tour.

I thought about the 30 year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a Blackberry that played music, took videos, pictures and communicated with Facebook and Twitter.
I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife as everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. Seems I have to take my hearing aid out to use it and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calcu-lating"
You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then when I would make a right turn instead, it was not good.
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store.
You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused but I never remember to take them in with me.
Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.
I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do toot a lot."

Kratovil Afraid of Constituents?
Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) seems to be afraid of the very same people he was elected to represent. Last week we asked the question – “Where’s Frank?”. Well, true to the word of his staff, Kratovil has released a schedule of appearances.
Are there any town hall meetings? No! Are there plenty of appearances that are designed to be photo ops for use in the November election? Yes!
Just as Kratovil is trying to claim that his vote to appropriate $26 Billion to keep more government workers on the payroll is “cutting the deficit” (only in Washington would someone vote to spend billions and then claim that they are saving money), Kratovil is claiming to represent his constituents while only appearing at tightly controlled events more designed to aid his re-election effort than to actually answer questions. Is Kratovil afraid of his constituents? It appears so.

"Today Congress voted to waste billions more taxpayer dollars in a brazen attempt to score political points in an election year. I am appalled but not surprised that Nancy Pelosi, Frank Kratovil and the Democrat Congress are yet again pandering to special interests at the expense of the American Taxpayer.
At a time when Americans are imploring their elected representatives to stand up and lead us out of this economic turmoil, Pelosi and Kratovil continue to turn a deaf ear to the will of the people. They insist on pursuing a job-killing agenda that threatens to leave us in financial ruin in order to reward the special interests that got them elected.
H.R. 1586 is a blatant payoff to unions and a bailout for states that have grossly mismanaged taxpayer dollars. Taxpayers want to know: When will the madness end? The American people deserve accountability and are demanding action that benefits everyone, not just big Democrat contributors. This legislation contains no accountability and does nothing to improve the financial well-being of the thousands of residents in Maryland’s First District that are struggling to provide for their families.
Instead of bailing out unions and rewarding irresponsible governing, Pelosi and Kratovil should be working to improve the lives of every American. As schools are preparing to open, thousands of Marylanders are worried about providing clothes and supplies for their children and yet Pelosi and Kratovil are more concerned about PAC dollars and political payoffs. New York Jumps Ahead Of Feds With Law Holding Mortgage Companies Accountable On Mods
New York regulators have crafted new laws to give the state authority to punish mortgage servicers -- something the Treasury Department, in administering its struggling mortgage modification program [1], has so far failed to do. The new rules set clear standards for how servicers must handle homeowners seeking a modification.
"We will not hesitate to bring an enforcement action or to refer an enforcement action," said Richard Neiman, the New York superintendent of banks. "In fact, we'll be looking for that case in the event of any wrongdoing, because we know the message it will send to the entire industry."
The delays that hundreds of thousands of homeowners have encountered [2] in the administration's mortgage modification program have highlighted the poor performance by many mortgage servicers -- the companies that process mortgage payments and foreclosures -- particularly the largest: Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup. Struggling homeowners seeking a modification frequently wait months, even years, for an answer.
The New York laws [3], which go into effect Oct. 1, lay out how servicers should handle homeowners in danger of foreclosure. Within 10 days of a homeowner's applying for a modification, for example, the servicer is required to acknowledge the request and specify what additional information is needed. Within 30 days of receiving all of the required information, the servicer is required to render its decision and respond with either a written offer or a denial in writing.

The Salisbury Advisory Council on Youth Activities is saying good-bye to summer with an exciting line-up of activities slated for Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15. The weekend will begin with a ‘Back to School Day’ on Saturday, August 14 from 8am to 6pm where families can enjoy a fun-filled day of games, entertainment, food and bargains at Billy Gene Jackson Sr. Park (420 North Lake Drive Salisbury, MD).
‘Back to School Day’ highlights include tee ball, basketball and softball games as well as face painting, pony rides and water slides. Food, snow balls and cold drinks will also be available. Families are also invited out to watch the Larry Miles Tennis Tournament and witness a ceremony recognizing participants from this summer’s tee ball, tennis, golf and softball programs at Billy Gene Jackson Sr. Park as well as the Stay Ready Ryderz a group that provides free back to school supplies.

Maryland State Police Superintendent, Colonel Terrence B. Sheridan will officially present the new Chief of Field Operations Bureau, Lt. Colonel W.F. “Pete” Landon, with his badge and collar ornaments at the Berlin Barracks in a brief ceremony. Landon, an Eastern Shore native and a 25-year veteran of the Department, began his state police career at Centreville Barracks after graduating from the 89th Academy Class in July 1985. Since then, he has received numerous accolades for his dedication to duty in the various units which he served.
Since becoming a trooper, Landon has also been very active in volunteering for Special Olympics Maryland. He is involved in logistics planning for the MSP Polar Bear plunge each year, managing traffic control and security for the annual event that raised $3 million last year. He is also a veteran Superplunger, along with his two sons, raising over $40,000 for Special Olympic athletes in his past four years of plunging into the icy cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay once an hour for 24 hours, the day before the official Plunge. Most recently, Landon represented Maryland in the Law Enforcement Torch Run at the 2010 Special Olympics Summer National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska, by personally running over 100 miles to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Maryland.

DART Resort Transit Celebrates its 21st Season with Record Breaking Ridership and Beach Park & Ride Usage
Wilmington -- Started in 1990 as Delaware Resort Transit, DART Resort Transit is in the height of its 21st season and is celebrating with record breaking ridership and usage of the DART Rehoboth Beach Park & Ride lot. DART First State is operated by the Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC).
As of August 5th, the DTC Resort Bus System has broken records for the highest number of riders for the same period last year. There were 29,560 riders during this week which is a 24.11% increase over last year during the same week. The Route 201, serving the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, accommodated 158,200 passengers so far this year. This represents a 36.50% increase over the same period for the 2009 season. The Route 305, Wilmington to Rehoboth Beach Connection, has seen a significant increase in popularity this year. At this point of the season, we have exceeded the last year number of riders by 39.46%.
The Park & Ride lot has seen a huge increase due mostly to the Rehoboth employees from businesses and public agencies. As of July 17th, there were 9,133 Rehoboth Beach employees using the Park & Ride lot compared to only 6,304 last year during the same time frame. This is a 44.88%. The number of full paying customers at the Park & Ride lot has gone from 4,024 last year to 5,106 this year, an increase of 26.89%.
Reaching out to beach area employers about the convenience of the Park & Ride lot was just one element of the DART synergistic and media domineering marketing efforts for the record breaking 2010 season. DTC Marketing sent letters to 733 employers about the employee discounted park & ride program. Other resort marketing awareness elements included print ads in two beach area newspapers, radio ads on 6 of the major radio stations in the State, and restroom display ads at 20 restaurant locations in the beach area. DTC Marketing staff also spent a week in the beach area distributing 26,100 resort schedules to over 1,000 Resort area businesses. In addition, DTC Marketing placed Resort ad boards in the major shopping malls at Christiana and Dover, along with Resort movie theater ads in Dover and Rehoboth. Promotion of the Resort service and especially the Park & Ride lot also included DART Rider E-Mail Notices, a special information and schedule page on DartFirstState.com, and on the DTC Weatherline reporting service serving New Castle County.
Year to date, ridership is up from Resort 2009 by 35.64%. DART has transported 227,459 riders so far this season. The 2010 Resort season has surpassed any and all prior years to date. The DTC record year was in 2008 and for this year ridership is 29.78% greater than the same period.
DTC Executive Director, Stephen Kingsberry, remarked, This is more evidence of how transit works well for the public and the effectiveness of well-planned park & ride lots. We are pleased to provide families and beach visitors with a low-cost, safe, and comfortable way to experience all the beach area has to offer. We are also pleased to welcome more bicyclists on our Resort buses.

LEGENDS DROP SHOREBIRDS 10-3 IN SERIES FINALE
‘Birds Play Game One Against BlueClaws on Thursday
Salisbury, Md. – The Lexington Legends plated five runs in the ninth inning to cap off a 10-3 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday night. The Legends secured the series win with the victory.
The Legends and Shorebirds traded runs in the second inning. In the top half, Aaron Bray singled home Jacob Goebbert. In the bottom half, Mike Flacco scored on a Gary Helmick infield single. Flacco moved to third on a throwing error by Jimmy Paredes.
The Legends plated nine unanswered runs after the second inning.
In the third, Jiovanni Mier hit a triple to right-center field to score Grant Hogue and Goebbert doubled to plate Mier to give the Legends a 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning, the Legends tacked on two more runs including another RBI hit by Mier.
The Legends put the game out of reach with five hits and five runs against Shorebirds reliever David Walters in the ninth inning. Bubby Williams capped the frame with a two-run double to the left field corner.
T.J. Baxter gave the Shorebirds something to smile about in the ninth inning. He belted his team high seventh homer of the season over the left field wall to trim the deficit to 10-3. The ‘Birds would get no closer.
Lexington starter Tanner Bushue earned the win in six innings. He allowed six hits and one unearned run. Shorebirds starter Bobby Bundy was pinned with the loss. He allowed nine hits and five runs.
Reliever Brian Parker tossed three scoreless frames. He allowed just three hits.
The Shorebirds gear up for a five-game series against Lakewood starting on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brent Allar makes the start in game one.
