Governor celebrates full compliance under federal mandates, signaling end to federal oversight in Maryland
BALTIMORE, MD (August 12, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley will join Secretary Donald W. DeVore and other Juvenile Services officials today to announce the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center’s full compliance with federal monitoring requirements. This achievement signals the end of federal oversight of juvenile facilities in Maryland.
When Governor O’Malley took office in 2007, Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School and Cheltenham Youth Facility were already under federal monitoring for substandard conditions and care of youth in those facilities. BCJJC was voluntarily included in the federal oversight plan in May 2007. Today’s announcement sets the stage for an end to federal oversight of all Maryland juvenile justice facilities.
