The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces that the $32.6 million reconstruction of the I-95 Newark Toll Plaza and the conversion to accommodate highway-speed E-ZPass lanes is nearing completion, and will be fully operational for the Fourth of July Holiday weekend.
"We do not anticipate any remaining project related activities to impact the toll lanes during the Fourth of July weekend," Acting Transportation Secretary, Cleon Cauley, Sr., stated. "However, due to completing road surface striping around the toll booth access lanes, there will be some intermittent lane closures prior to the weekend in the southbound direction. Both northbound and southbound traffic has been moving smoothly since Sunday afternoon's opening of the southbound highway speed E-ZPass lanes."
By having the plaza fully functional, Newark-based contractor A-Del Construction Company, was able to beat the projected 479 calendar day contract by over a month. Working around the clock, with the combined dedication and hard-work of the I-95 Toll Plaza personnel, TransCore, and Control Technologies Inc., DelDOT's goal of having the plaza open for the holiday weekend was achieved.
Throughout the week, all cash customers should continue to use "CASH" manned lanes and should stay alert for lane restrictions approaching the toll plaza while final road striping is being performed. In addition, please be aware of lane shifts, slow moving construction vehicles, and construction personnel.
"The opening of the new highway-speed E-ZPass lanes at the I-95 Newark Toll Plaza is welcome news for Mid-Atlantic motorists and truckers," Jim Lardear, Director, Public and Government Affairs for Mid-Atlantic AAA stated. "These new lanes hold the promise of ultimately reducing both operational costs and eliminating the heavy toll plaza congestion, which will reduce emissions from idling vehicles."
