On Friday, July 1st, Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt is scheduled to meet with county department heads to explain the effects of the FY 2012 budget on county personnel. Included in this meeting will be the announcement of at least one layoff.
County Public Information Officer Jim Fineran confirmed that there would be one (1) layoff. He declined to say who or from what department. Fineran did state that the employee had already been notified that their job was being eliminated.
SBYNews sources inside the GOB confirm that this layoff will come from the Department of Planning and Zoning.
More details will be provided after Pollitt’s meeting on Friday.

Its about time there should be more layoffs, Rick deal with it like a real business would. In the real world private business can't raise prices all the time because of budget problems you make CUTS.

Planning and Zoning had several layoffs, they happened Monday. Although, they were re-hired at other departments.

Hey Joe, do you realize that there were people laid off at the highway department last year? Looking at the roads, do you really think there is less work to do? Do the potholes stop forming, curbs breaking, trees and grass stop growing, snow stop falling, and the list goes on and on. But hey, atleast when you complain about lack of services and your bashing of snow removal, you can be thankful that people were laid off, and the county had yet another year of declining revenue. BTW, building permits aint all that they do brilliant.
FYI, P&Z does not issue building permits. County Public Works issues County Permits and the Department of Permitting, Inspection and Building issues City permits.
My POINT is, Wicomico County is NOT growing, it is shrinking. EVERY department should have serious layoffs, like ANY business would. I have stated this for the past 4 years.

Joe, the county is not shrinking. The poplulation of this county only continues to increase. What is happening, as an effect of the revenue cap, is that the revenue cant keep up with the growth. There is not less work to do for the most part. Sure there may be an isoloate position or so that may be effected by the economy, but there are certainly other things that those people can do. How do you think the county is shrinking, is it Somerset, Worcester, or Dorchester that is expanding and making this county smaller? And like I said, buinesses layoff because they don't have as much demand for widgets. There is no less demand for the services. Look at how much you all rag on here about dumpsters not getting emptied, snow not getting removed fast enough, on and on. Cake and eat it too.

Just because you dont like a program does not give you the right to make up stats,its amazing to me that people like you think the answer to our problems is to take more money from the people who dont have it to begin with.its a proven FACT that when there are tax cuts tax revenues go UP ! Another FACT that you may not understand is the revenue cap was voted in BY THE PEOPLE, and not just put into place by the ever so evil republicans.
Fineran's layoff should be numero uno. What exactly is his purpose? Rick's axe man? Because he can't do things himself? Suck it up and do some real work Rick.

I agree, 6:59. In times of austerity, as these are, there is no reason for a county spokesperson. Let Pollitt do his own speaking and save the county all that money that goes to Fineran.

"It is a proven fact that when there are tax cuts, tax revenues go up", really? The tax rate has been declining in this county since the inception of the revenue cap. Tax revenues have declined by 14 million dollars or so. I don't think those facts give much substance to your statement. My comment about the other counties growing was sarcastic. Wicomico County is not shrinking. Just look at the census reports. The property tax revenue cap was a knee jerk reaction to a decision to increase taxes too much at one time because of the failure of previous councils to do it incrementally. The revenue cap will only work if it can work both ways like it was intended. Otherwise, the county dies. But, that is what is seems that many of you wish. So sad that there are those that wish people will lose there jobs. Why is it that if someone in the private sector loses there job you feel sorry for them, and talk about how awful it is. The people that have been laid off have bills to pay and children to feed just like everyone else.
The county has been FAT (not just the executive either) for years! We have supported a terribly inefficient government for decades. It should have been improved years ago. To include lay off's and restructuring of duties. This is why we are, where we are. If this were a business, it would have gone bankrupt years ago. I like the Tax Cap. Government should be smaller at every level: federal, state AND COUNTY, and city. The services SUCK for the dollars we spend. The Quality level is terrible too. We have small kingdoms like the executive's court of jesters; sheriff shorty's deputies of doom; the state's attorney's hand holder (who's is now off payroll); offices at the county level who work at a snail's pace and so on. People are tired of the waste. Fineran fits in that category too. But, Big Boy doesn't have the smarts or the @#$#$#$# to let him go. He should be the one to go.
More layoffs are definitely needed. Seriously, how many PR and marketing people does one county need. You've got the PIO and a whole office full at the rec department. What's up with that? All they do is send out poorly written press releases.

You're right, 9:20. Her position is about as useless as Fineran's. Certainly the duty of 'spokesperson" can be given to one of the multitude of supervisors in the Central Office, or Dr. Frederickson can be his own spokesperson.

A few years back, my company was in trouble. We all took a 10% cut and the execs took 20%. Still did the same job and more to get the comapny back on its feet. Wico Co - take a lesson.
