Senate Rejects Concealed Weapons Measure

'This is no minor shift in policy,' said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

WASHINGTON - In a rare win for gun control advocates, the Senate on Wednesday rejected a measure allowing a person with a concealed weapon permit in one state to also hide his firearm when visiting another state.

The vote was 58-39 in favor of the provision establishing concealed carry permit reciprocity in the 48 states that have concealed weapons laws. That fell two votes short of the 60 needed to approve the measure, offered as an amendment to a defense spending bill.

Opponents prevailed in their argument that the measure violated states rights by forcing states with stringent requirements for permits to recognize concealed weapons carriers from states that give out permits to almost any gun owner.

Leave it to the Dumbocrats to demonize firearm ownership.
Why shouldn't a law abiding citizen be able to carry a defensive weapon anywhere he/she goes in a free country?
Violent crime would drop dramatically as the crooks start to realize that victims may shoot back.

Leave it to Republicans to cry "States' Rights!" when it's convenient, but what to deny states their right to enforce their own laws.

If New York has more restrictive gun laws, isn't that their right as a state, hence, states rights?

You didn't want states to be forced to recognize gay marriage, but you want them to be forced to recognize conceled carry permits? Hypocritical much?

And I say this as a dad who took his daughter shotting on Father's Day. Let states enforce their own laws.

Second Amendment rights are Constitutional rights, not States' rights. I think the fact that we came so close in this vote is a big victory for concealed carry advocates. Imagine in Maryland if all of a sudden out-of-staters were carrying in the State and there were no negative results. This would set the stage for a reform of concealed carry laws in this prohibitive State. There's no way I would live in PG county or Baltimore without a CCW permit.

Joe, I am a strong supporter of second amendment rights and thank you for posting this important story on your blog. Maybe this will inspire the law abiding citizens to act to protect our right to protect ourselves.
Thanks again.

AR-15,
"Second Amendment rights are Constitutional rights, not States' rights."

More accurately, Second Amendment rights are personal human rights, not to be infringed upon by States or the Fed.

This is a STATE matter, not a federal matter.
They did the right thing!
How many more rights to laws do you want the feds to take away from the individual states?
