I had to bring this Post back up because the comments just keep coming in, months later.
If you check the county's web site under employment and click on corrections you will find the following information. According to the job listing non certified officers start at 28,000 and certified at 30,000. This is far below the stating pay of surrounding counties and the state system.
All that aside, within one year the non certified officer has to successfully complete the entrance level correctional academy. After completing the academy the officer is certified to work as a correctional officer in the state of Maryland. Going by the job listing the newly certified officer should receive a 2,000 dollar pay raise. All other agency's reward their employees with a much deserved pay raise. Not so at WCDC. WCDC officers have to wait another full year to receive their pay raise. This is in direct violation of their advertised job listing. No where is this written down or told to the officers of WCDC.
Now in contrast to the Sheriffs Department, their officers receive an automatic pay raise upon completion of the police academy.
WCDC has a hard enough time attracting qualified applicants and even harder time retaining good officers. When will the powers in charge wake up and make the changes needed to retain good officers. I know that the general public wants to house and feed inmates as cheaply as possible. Also out of site is also out of mind. Everyday officers at WCDC are doing overtime. 10 to 12 officers everyday. In the past six months 15 officers have left the employ of WCDC. Only 7 have been hired with 2 new officers included that started last week.
Now if I have any of these facts wrong, please correct me. I demand that the administration of WCDC respond to these allegations because they are not responding to the officers when they ask these very questions. The only answer ever given is "I'll get back to you", but nobody ever does.
If the command staff who claim to back the officers will help with problems such as these instead of worrying who has the best parking spot or watching their computer screens(remember Major Moore, red goes on black) would support the line officers, more officers would stay.
It costs more to replace an officer than it does to retain in the long run. The main idea seems to be that its cheaper to pay overtime than it is to pay benefits. The truth is that sick leave rises because officers are being burned out. The warden has been heard to say"If they don't like it they can leave". Guess what 3D, they must not like it for they are leaving faster than you can hire them.

Through a maintence worker this was stated "they spent 6 to 10 thousand dollars for furniture and carpet in Chief Kimbles office." Yet for 3 years they have promised promotions and they have never come.We used to have an anual crab feast with monies in the officers acount which is paid for buy the vending machines. The account once had over 30,000.00 in it now we are told since last year that the account does not have any money in it..whats up with that. We still have the vending machines in use so where did Devilish Dougy spend our money. And with Kimble being a racist bastard the majors better look out....

If the STAFF @ WCDC would stop the "Jim Crowism" and the "Black on Black" crime (ie jealousy, envy and hating) amongst each other; maybe they can have a special election on Collective Bargaining like the Delmar Police Department. WCDC is in desperate need of a UNION. This is the only way things will ever change @ Wicomico County Detention Center.

The corruption has been long standing. Some of the CO's are just as crimminal minded as the inmates. When a situation arises, it is swept under the rug & hidden instead of being dealt with. Look at the great fella who robbed Riverside Pharmacy last June....he was a CO......fired for drug use; rehired; fired for stealing narcs & bringing in contraband to inmates........nothing happenened tohim them. Maybe the pharmacy grama wouldn't have happened if WCDC had dealt with that charming officer way back when! (This guy also claimed to be a volunteer firefighter....go figure...
The adminstration needs to clean out the corrupt officers, signifcantly increase pay & maintain safety for its remaining personell.

A cheerleader stands on the sidelines and tries to keep up morale. All the real action is on the field with the players. Sgt. Dickerson is out for himself and no one else. Just let someone get overtime instead of him. OMG does he ever complain. He is the #1 employee in the county as far as overtime. He can't even make to work on time. When asked to attend county council meetings as a show of support, he can't because he's working overtime.

WCDC is in a "crunch" right now with overtime. The shift working officers are constantly drafted to work 16 hours per day once or twice a week. Now! We have a preaching talking, greedy, coming to work late regularly during his own regular working hours and bostering how he can do his job better then the rest of the staff; Sergeant coming to the officers rescue. Now! If 5:55 pm do not understand that some of the shift working officer absolutely hate working overtime and do appreciate Sgt. Dickerson greediness; then you work it. The overtime issue is interesting.
This facility does it, to me, a little backwards. Most places have a list of officers who want overtime and when a body is needed the call it in order. When they can't locate someone then they draft (force someone to stay).
WCDC forces someone to stay 1st and then they must find someone to work for them. They're going to the person they know will more than likely say yes. "Where's Sgt. Dickerson?"

Comparing Sgt, Dickerson to "Uncle Tom" is truly an insult. (Read the Novel Uncle Tom's Cabin) Uncle Tom was a slave who had a strong faith in GOD. He believed not only that all men and women are created equal. He also believed that we could all live together in peace. Hate was not part of his vocabulary. When his slave master would beat him, Uncle Tom would pray for his slave master's soul and hoped that GOD would soften his heart so that no other slave would suffer the fate he had to go thriugh. When a young white girl fell from a boat into a river and her family watched in horror, Uncle Tom jump from the boat into the river and saved that little girl. Keep in mind, this man couldn't even swim himself. When the other slaves were extremely sick and hungry he would share his food with them. Of course, the slave master would feed slaves scrapes of food. When Uncle Tom's slave master, the wife and his childrens became extremely sick, Uncle Tom took care of them and brought them back to good health, while others wish the slave master would die. No matter what your race is, Uncle Tom taught, no matter how bad things were in those day, GOD will always be there for you. He loved and believed in the good of all people. I don't know of any man that would make such a sacrifice in today's time. And I certainly don't know of anyone at WCDC that would make any form of sacrifice for the betterment of the Detention Center. You have been away for a long time. Things have truly change drastically for the worst at WCDC. Which is why you are no longer working at the Detention Center. Yes, Sgt. Dickerson and other correctional officers managed to get approximately 90% signature on cards for the first step in the Collective Bargaining process. Since then, absolutely nothing has happen. NOTHING. He spend a massive amount of his time working overtime. 9:22 pm is on point. And, the comment concerning "wanna be Uncle Tom negro" is true. Uncle Tom was a great and loving GOD fearing man. Maybe Sgt. Dickerson want to be considered a great and loving God fearing man. But, Uncle Tom would not have spent 16 hours per day working hard just for the dollar bill/greed. He worked hard for the betterment of all people ensuring that they would not loss their faith. And, if Uncle Tom were alive today at WCDC, we all would be celebrating in the same manner as the Delmar Police Department personnel because of their Collective Bargaining statue. Working that much overtime that Sgt. Dickerson is working is an indication that WCDC is in desperate need of Collective Bargaining for the betterment of all staff. We all need to stand together peacefully and find a way to bring Collective Bargaining to WCDC. Sgt. Dickerson has tried three times to no avail. Thanks Joe for the quality entertainment. I have never heard of such complaining in my life. Most people complaining aretalking about feeling. Feeling have little to no place in a military style structured environment.
I would love to know what the requirements are to be a correctional officer at WCDC. Do you need a high school diploma? Do you have to pass a background check? Do you have to be able to read and write? Most of these people would have a hard time getting a job at Walmart.
It's time for some profesionalism to be implemented. Anyone that speaks out against their chain of command should be written up for insubordination. It definitely has a negative effect on morale and inturn keeps WCDC an unsafe and hostile working environment.
There are ways to file grievences and complaints without being insubordinate. Respect is not somethinfg that is given or asked for, it is something that is earned. No one that has written a response and works at WCDC has earned any respect. If they worked for me, I don't think they are worth $20K a year, let alone more. Overtime of this amount is a scam. Criminal mind are good at running scams. They know that if they can intimidate people and make them quit or get them fired, they in turn can get more OT and get paid. It's all a big racket.
Well this has been very entertaining but as a taxpayer i think some very important issues get overlooked such as overtime, if we are paying a officer 20 to 30 hours of overtime why not hire another officer and get a full weeks work for basically the same money. As far as take home vehicles tell me why anyone at the jail needs a Crown Vic with the police package? It may be a perk of the job so why not a car that cost half as much and gets 2x the MPG. Enough said as usual those that are in charge would rather piss away our tax dollars.
This jail will always be in turmoil as long as DD has anything to do with it. He is incompatant and does not have the skills or integraty in order to run a jail. I understand they are constantly facing lawsuits and being investigated by the Feds. Why does the county put up with this individule?

I am a twelve (12) year employee at WCDC. This whole entire section of this blog is extremely an embarrassment. Unfortunately, we do have some shift working correctional officers that just don't give a darn. They hide in the dark and create havoc in this facility. I wish there was a way to get rid of these people. I'm embarrassed to be an employee at WCDC.
The whole overtime issue just may be a scam. Because, most of these people are just here for the money. I agree with you 100%.
Please stop by the Detention Center and fill out an application. With the severe shortage of staff, you will certainly be hired. I hope you are a male. This facility has entirely too many female employees.

The sad thing about all of this mess is, Wicomico County Detention Center do have respectful and dedicated correctional officers who work hard everyday. They show respect towards their supervisors and the command staff. They treat the inmates like human beings. They support their co-workers immensely. But, they suffer in silence because they are surrounded by folks who spew there vicious comments on this blog. The Bloggers all need to learn, "Never bite the hand that feed you". some officers are making thousands of dollars per pay in overtime and one officer told me that he made $ 4000.00 in overtime in a month.this is poor management and lack of retention skills on wcdc part.the same corrupt and unskilled type wcdc managers keep being hired and the same management style perpetuates itself over and over again.why does Mr.Pollitt keep allowing this.take charge and do something.

The only thing Rick Pollitt and the Management team see on this "BLOG" is a bunch of wimpering and whinnying small group of people blitching about NOTHING. WCDC has come a very long and positive way from the likes of the Warden Welchs, the Col. Darlings, the Captain Roberts and the Col. Youngs. If YOU don't beleive this, YOU better ask someone who has been employed @ the jail for over 20 years.
Look beyond WCDC. The economy is one step from the Great Depression. There are natural disasters occurring throughout this country in diver places. There are too many average working Americans losing their jobs, retirement and health insurance by the hour as we speak. Unemployment in this country is blowing through the roof. And, YOU should be extremely grateful that YOU have a job.
If YOU really have something to say of real substance, take YOUR complaint to YOUR immediate supervisor or write a grievance and forward that grievance through the chain of command or take YOUR complaint to a county council meeting. Otherwise, stop complaining like a coward on this "BLOG", except what YOU can't change alone or quit working @ WCDC.
As for being an IDIOT, that's YOUR opinion and I may agree with YOU at times. I have been known to flip a script @ times @ work in YOUR face and not on a "BLOG". I do believe in fairness. We are all at fault. Not just the Officers. Not just management. We are all at fault here.

The County Council has to be sold on the idea to pay WCDC corectional employees fairly as a result of this pay deficeit the following events have occurred: 1. Over 40 correctional staff have departed WCDC from 2006 to present and 95% of those whom departed were certified.
Mr D does not sell well, lacks emotion, which equals lack of action.

Mr. Pollitt just put out a memo to all Dept. Heads basically warning all that he will not tolerate
harassment of whistle blowers. Mr Hardin was let go as Investigator at WCDC. It appears he had dirt on high level management, and took this information outside of WCDC.and lost his job as a result of it. Hopefully
Mr. Pollitt will look into this issue and make an example to support his position as stated in his memo.

The lack of WCDC uniform policy enforcement comes from the Shift Supervisors who conduct line prior to the start of each shift. They have options to utilize to correct these problems but seem to fail to do so. How do you all expect the low level correctional staff to adhere to
the many policies and procedures when the shift supervisors will not enforce a basic uniform policy.
