Veterans’ records found in ex-state employee’s storage unit

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is seeking a criminal investigation after applications for veterans’ benefits and other documents were found in a storage unit belonging to a former state employee.

Tom Herthel, director of benefits for the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, said Friday that 20 to 30 boxes of documents were recovered from the unit belonging to a former veterans service representative for the department.

That employee helped veterans apply for benefits with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Herthel declined to release the former employee’s name.
