Georgetown to Give Slave Descendants Priority for Admission

WASHINGTON — Georgetown University will give preference in admissions to the descendants of slaves owned by the Maryland Jesuits as part of its effort to atone for profiting from the sale of enslaved people.

Georgetown president John DeGioia told news outlets that the university in Washington will implement the admissions preferences. He says Georgetown will need to identify and reach out to descendants of slaves and recruit them to the university.

On Thursday morning, a university committee released a report that also called on its leaders to offer a formal apology for the university’s participation in the slave trade.

In 1838, two priests who served as president of the university orchestrated the sale of 272 people to pay off debts at the school. The slaves were sent from Maryland to plantations in Louisiana.

The university says it will give descendants of those slaves “the same consideration we give members of the Georgetown community” when they apply.

Georgetown President John DeGioia penned a letter to students and facultyThursday, writing, “I believe the most appropriate ways for us to redress the participation of our predecessors in the institution of slavery is to address the manifestations of the legacy of slavery in our time.”

See the university’s report below.

Any living descendants are part Cajun now and would only apply to LSU or LA Tech.

Wake up people did you not know that the Jesuits are part of the New World Order problem! They are one of the many evil forces identified in the hidden dangers of the rainbow. I don't trust them! The Catholic Church always going with the flow never standing on Gods Doctrine. Hippocrates

My ancestors were white, protestant, indentured servants.....so I must be owed something from somebody. Perhaps all of us, as American citizens, owe the British people some retribution. This has gotten way out of the realm of reality. This is all BULL........ And, all Georgetown graduates should now be embarassed, ashamed, and angry at this most recent move.

How many people can present documentation that they descend fom the 272 humans sold as chattel? Irrefutable evidence that they are eligible. How many of them wish to attend Georgetown? I doubt we are talking about crowds of people here. It is a gesture.

This is a good first step. Small things can add up over time and as more and more people across the country wake up to it, we can start to make things better. That this is a
religiously founded university is appropriate. If anything is a matter of atonement, then this is. I hope this example inspires more people and institutions to act similarly.

This is where your stupidity comes in. First of all there is no such thing as an "indentured servant." That is just a soft term for slavery and chances are your ancestors were Irish slaves.

The second part of your ignorance is the the British sold your Irish ancestors into slavery.

You are on the right track, but not very educated.
