I agree with 11:04, they must pay for their actions or it will only get worse. Better yet, let them feel a paddle like we did...I remember that old "swiss cheese" paddle at Glen Avenue elementary back in the late 70's....ouch....LOL
I think some of the students (and parents) need to be reformed to reduce the number of suspensions handed out.
Nice, lower the standard even more so we will have an entire generation of stupid.
My son was in assembly. They were all given paper posters. In the hallway the boys (6th graders)rolled them up and were playing darth vader (sords). They were sent to the office for FIGHTING and sent home. I went to school the next day and called them on it. Told them to concentrate on real fighting and real problems.
This is part of the problem, parents think that it is never MY CHILD, what was Darth Vader doing with his sword??
Common sense should prevail, but not all adults have it. We need to focus on bullying and STOPPING it. Parents no longer parent. For some reason many parents want to be their child's friend. If parents would do their job, this would be a non-issue.
How about parent responsibility?! It is YOUR job as a parent to teach your children from right and wrong! Yes, My husband and I are parents, not out children's friend!!!! We are Dad and Mom !! Everything comes from the home!
No, and certainly not just the special needs and minority students that the state is directing this policy to help. It is all about keeping these kids in school in the hopes that they "might" learn something more than at home, thus raising the all important test scores. But, what about the kids who are behaving themselves, they have a right to learn without the distraction these problem children are causing.
The darth vader children were acting out with a piece of paper. Some stsudents have a "reala" knife or gun OR bulling other students. People should be worried about these not paper swords. A rolled up paper dont normally hurt especially when both have one.
So many suspensions and they went to Alternative School, that was like a vacation to these kids. They had it made and did not want to go back to their home school. In school suspension is not hard enough to really make a difference. It just keeps them out of the main stream for a while. Now they are trying to keep these future ECI inmates until they are 18.
They need to have a zero tolerance for violent acts kick them out.
I think schools need to re-think discipline strategies for target populations. Many children are not discourage from being suspended, it is a vacation for them. I know it is difficult for administrators to hand pick punishments, but it is becoming more and more difficult to discourage these punishable behaviors because kids just don't care. And all of these previous folks, I couldn't agree more. The kids don't care because the parents don't care. The parents probably just want the kid out of the house for the day and that is the only reason they are in school.
YES What happened to reform School. The Easy solution is to GET VOCHERS ON THE BALLOT AND bring back reform schools for the ones who want to be idiots

11:29 I agree! Some of these teachers/administrators have NO common sense. They need to focus on real problems and not boys playing with paper swords.
For every one child suspended with a paper sword, there are twenty five allowed to have an incredible number of office referrals before any meaningful consequences are given. Sometimes, if a child continues to disrupt and play in the hall after being told upteen times to stop, the suspendable offense is repeated failure to follow the instructions of an adult and the issue is not the paper sword.

Children are disciplined selectively and this should not happen. Equal punishment for ALL is a necessity. We have become soft in discipline, both in schools and at home. It's time for a change, and I personally believe expulsion should be an option. No child who cannot behave and repeatedly disrupts, fights, etc. should NOT have the "right" to a free education. Maybe if parents were forced to send their brats to private schools they would see the "value" in discipline.
