The major stock-market indices will head into the weekend on solid footing after one of the most volatile weeks on record comes to a close. A favorable reading on retail sales offset concern about a weak consumer confidence report, helping the Dow up by 125 points to 11269. The Nasdaq Composite index gained 15 to 2507 and the S&P 500 added 6 points to close at 1178.
