Totally agree with 8:29 PM, they are useless!

Salisbury FD is the biggest bunch of babies ever! These guys will whine and whine and whine. Suck it up buttercups, you get paid. Volunteer fire departments dont whine this much.

Anonymous said...

Big mistake and big lose in fire protection

Anonymous said...

So, where are they getting the money to purchase all their equipment. Gonna have to have one hell of a fundraiser.

Anonymous said...

Let the county handle the county and city handle the city, since the city is playing games with funding and figures.

Anonymous said...

Several thoughts Joe...

how will this affect the fire service agreement?
will the new "independent" vfd cover the SFD county areas?
If so, does the SFD need those FF's they were asking for now?
Do you think the county executives office had a hand in this?
If so, is this like the county accepting the former mayors nuclear option in their own terms?

looks like things just got very sticky with this one Joe.

Anonymous said...

Wow perfect . Dose this stop the city and county issue with funding.

Anonymous said...

U THE TAXPAYER.

Anonymous said...

STOP letting the SFD go to EMS calls see how quick they lose there funding.

recall the mayor. this should have never reached this stage. City still has fire protection but at added cost.
This kid is arrogant and DANGEROUS.Turn him out!

They should have joined Station 2 years ago when they tried to leave the city. Maybe the Volunteer situation would be in a better place then it is now. Wish them luck.

I've been going to vollie fundraisers for years, 8:37. Now they won't have to share with the paid doormats. I've never eaten a meal served up by a PAID fireman!

Anonymous said...

The only reason there is full time 24/7 career staffing of one fire engine is the volunteers have drastically failed to respond on incidents. There would be no mutual air agreement if I have anything to do with it and just what response area do these renegade firemen think they will covering? I am sure Hebron, Delmar, Parsonsburg, or Fruitland will not give up any response area to this group nor will Salisbury who is the authority having jurisdiction allow it. This is typical for a person or persons who can’t get his or her way to pick up their toys and go to another sandbox. Well Mr. Mayor I hope you shut this bunch down and put them on the street for good!

Anonymous said...

Umm - they are taking the equipment - so Guess city will have to buy MORE....

Anonymous said...

Ha ha this bunch of misfits is going to improve services to county residents.

"Chief" Hoppes (aka Bishop 1 day a week) forgot about his entry years in the fire service and who trained him when he began his self satisfying climb to what he thought would be success. It's lonely at the top. Success is denied one who forsakes what is supposed to be brotherhood. Turns out the only thing accomplished is the greatest contribution by a "chief" to destroy what was once a brotherhood of dedication.

Anonymous said...

If by "provide services" they mean drink coffee and do nothing all day, play xbox and drive county vehicles I say good riddance. The volunteers of Salisbury are the biggest bunch of babies and all around worthless group of individuals. Let the city employees do their job and not let the volunteers get in there way.

Anonymous said...

8:43 PM Exactly! The county can take that so called money they don't owe the city and start their own company.

Way to go volunteers! So proud of those who stand up for themselves and don't kiss that good old boys club azz

Anonymous said...

This is a long time coming and only the fault of the City. You can't ask a group of men and woman to volunteer their time to be treated in some cases like a second class citizen and not receive any benefit.

As a retired volunteer I never did it for what I could get or the recognition but in today's world you can't expect a person to volunteer their time and in many cases risk their life without some level of appreciation and more importantly respect.

We owe every volunteer in the county a huge debt of gratitude, I am confident the new venture will bring new life to the volunteers of the Salisbury district

Anonymous said...

I am confused because the city was running one of those fluffy little commercials begging for volunteers.

Anonymous said...

Just rode by station 1.All duty crews are there and a truck with a trailer . Tax payer dollars locking the volunteers out.

Retired said...

“The need and desire for volunteers within SFD has decreased” I’m sorry but that is a flat out lie. I have volunteered nearly twenty years for SFD. The players leading the charge here are far from superior firefighters from my experience with them. Elliots & Foskey’s are dumb and dumber that’s about the only way I know how to put. They won’t take any training yet want to be in charge that’s about par for the course.

Anonymous said...

Huge mistake. This is going to cost tax payers millions!

Anonymous said...

Why wait until July 1? Goodbye!

They hired recently retired Skip Carey to be their Chief.

I agree!! He is a FAT POS and should resign effective immediately!!

John Tull and Darrin Scott should resign as well and a new leader should be appointed and that new leader/chief should be tasked with cleaning house.

OK; that qualifies as very interesting news.

How many days until local Fake News outlets slip it into their product?

Anonymous said...

The city has locked the members out as well as called the cops. Hmm. They gave them to July first and the city kicked them . Heard Darrin Scott showed up drunk to.

Anonymous said...

A say day for the citizens of Salisbury and surrounding area. As a past member/firefighter/officer of the SFD, it breaks my heart to see what has just happened. Chief Hoppes and his Deputies have long forgotten where they can from, volunteers in the Salisbury Fire Department. The pay check and power have gone to there heads. Hoppes and Scott both had fathers, uncles and brothers that where volunteers, slap the in their faces. The city of Salisbury and our neighbors in the County have been protected by volunteers since 1872. Why now does the city want to push out volunteers which will cost the taxpayers more money to hire more paid personnel. No one wins.

Jim said...

Have to agree with previous comment... where will they get funding for building, trucks, equipment? Do they actually own any?

Anonymous said...

Salisbury is not the authority. And it's stupid to not have mutual aid agreements just because you don't like what they did. That shows your pettiness. Sounds like you are a part of the problem.

Anonymous said...

Said the obnoxious paid man.

Anonymous said...

This is what happens when you don't have qualified management. Place sitters are not able to put down chaos. The mayor is doing good things but he needs a qualified team and not people being put in position to pay them back for their work on political campaigns.

Anonymous said...

I'm assuming what your saying is that volunteer departments perform fundraising to help acquire their equipment. And you would be absolutely correct. Except where the Salisbury volunteer departments are concerned. There hasn't been fundraising in those departments for decades, all they've had to do is show up for emergencies. It'll be interesting to see how many members will be willing to spend all their time VOLUNTEERING at BBQ's, bingos, dinners, etc.

Anonymous said...

Hose jockeys getting riled up again.

Anonymous said...

They want all paid staff 24/7 so they decrease the volunteer staff to show they need help and bump up there stats to try to justify this. City don't have the funding though and are harassing the county for money, when the city don't pay the county what they are supposed too. Called bad management and bad budgeting. And Hoppes is a joke, along with fake Day who is playing along with the paid guys.

Anonymous said...

It was intended to be a blended volunteer and paid service. The destruction of what could have been a great combination department started during the Tilghman, Comegys era. It continued under Jim Ireton' s poor leadership, and now Day's. Mayor Day and any counci members who didn't work to resolve the conflicts and issues around lack of leadership in the Department (Hoppes and others) should be ousted from office. This is not a good outcome for residents. It is quite unfortunate. Thank you to the volunteers for their many contributions over the years.

Anonymous said...

City owns all the equipment. They aren't taking anything.

Anonymous said...

Please show the lawyer letters that station 1 supposedly has and that shows the city not will to work with them. Show facts

February 22, 2017 at 9:23 PM

-------------------------------------

1st thing can you retire from a voluntary position? 2nd thing I think all volunteers deserve the utmost respect. So it seems the city just wants paid firefighters. OK let them see how that works. I am sure the rest of the counties stations will welcome them. I for one love the response time of the volunteers at Parsonsburg, which is all volunteer as far as I know.
Again I ask, do the Salisbury volunteers actually own equipment? Can they take trucks ? How will they start their own "station" and who will call on them? This whole situation has gotten out of hand, and really feel what it is coming down to is that the City has to justify grant money to hire more paid firefighters thus reducing need for volunteers. But City can not have all those ne fire fighters on clock at same time so will staff all stations 24 hrs a day. Is This the plan??

Anonymous said...

So will the city stop responding to calls in station 1 County district now or July 1

Anonymous said...

Stand by .

Anonymous said...

Rumor on the street is that the County Executive has promised the new Company number 1 - 3 million dollars to acquire a new building and equipment to be able to operate as a separate county department
I ask - where is that kind of funding for the other county "Volunteer" departments ???

Will be interesting when the true facts come out

Anonymous said...

Yes you can actually receive a pension as a volunteer firefighter in Maryland. You are right in that every person deserves respect, in fact the world would be a better place if everyone agreed to not to be d*cks to each other. No the volunteers don't own the equipment. Following the last attempt of volunteers to leave, an agreement was put in place where all equipment was signed over to the city

Anonymous said...

How can the fire chief throw the volunteers out . They gave the city plenty of time .

Anonymous said...

Mayor day better step up and allow these volunteers to operate till there separating day of July 1 . Not a smart move on the fire chief but hey what dose he do that is smart .

February 22, 2017 at 8:36 PM

ALL fire dept's are like that whether paid or vol. But they provide a very important and vital task so it is tolerated but secretly resented. Slogans like "It's my job to save your ass, not kiss it", are detrimental to the public's respect and support of them.

They deserve to be recognized for their service and sacrifices but their arrogance, self righteousness and god like vision of themselves negates much of that.

I wish them well and continued success in their new endeavor. If only they could be more reserved and humble that would go a long way towards them being treated as hero's as they often claim and profess.

February 22, 2017 at 8:36 PM

Why is this a big mistake? Prove it!

The volunteer system went through a planned hostile take over in 2002-2003 and Fat Ass Hoppes was involved in it then and he sealed the deal by putting the volunteers out of business.

The volunteers are in the Salisbury by name only just so that the fire department can collect County Funding.

Are you a paid fireman? Only a paid fireman would say this in a negative way.

The sad thing is much of the fire equipment has been paid by the volunteers through the county funds.

The good thing about this is maybe the county will quit paying the the city the millions of dollars it currently wastes on Hoppes & Co.

Speaking of misfits look at Rick Hoppes. He looks like an oversized Porky Pig. A heart attack waiting to happen. This man is so lazy all he does is hide in his office an scheme all day long trying to figure out how he can run the rest of the volunteers out of business just like this. The only difference is he doesn't want to lose the fire district outside the city limits which is in the county.

This statement speaks volumes. The Mayor and Council should be ashamed of themselves for what just happened. Jake Day would not listen to his volunteer fireman in the city and when the volunteers spoke out about the problems with Rick Hoppes he would angrily tell them that Rick Hoppes was the chief and if they didn't like that then "Tough shit!" That is not how you treat men and women who put their lives on the line for free. I pray that Jake Day and this current city council loses their re-election bids. I too think that it is time for Jake Day to resign.

If you think the Salisbury Fire Department or the City of Salisbury is the "authority having jurisdiction" in Wicomico County then you have obviously fell on your head when you were born. Prove that the Salisbury Fire Department has any authority in the County. I bet you can't.

Anonymous said...

This situation has been coming for an extended time. The City of Salisbury has been keeping the volunteers around in name only to continue receiving the county funding that they receive for each volunteer station. It is now time for the county volunteer stations to stand up for the brotherhood and help their brothers at Station 1 have success. Someone stated that Salisbury is the authority. That is correct within the City limits of Salisbury but not outside the City. There is territory for these volunteers to serve within the County since the City of Salisbury boundaries are so screwed up no one can figure out where the City stops and the County starts. Now is the time for the County leaders to stand up and now give the Station 1 Volunteer Corporation the funding and not the City of Salisbury. While they are at it maybe they need to find a way to take care of all County fire service territory and remove all funding to the City of Salisbury. It appears that the City wants an all paid fire department so let them have it. I can't believe that the Federal Government will keep giving them a million dollars every 3 to 4 years. So I say good luck to both sides.

JoeAlbero said...

To those of you attacking Executive Culver on this matter, grow up. Culver has nothing to do with the Volunteers decision. The Volunteers have simply had enough while the CITY continues to steal money from the Volunteers bank account. That's just one of the many reasons they chose to break away.

It is, (and should be) the Executives decision, (hopefully) to make damn sure county residents are well protected.

Let's say someone has a heart attack at around 6 PM any given day. Rather then that person expecting EMS to respond within a few minutes, your paid Firefighters are eating dinner at station 16 and respond a good 7 minutes away, instead of leaving from station 1. There are a LOT of issues here.

It should also be known that last night the Salisbury Police were called in to stop ANY Volunteer from getting their personal belongings. The City also changed all the locks on the doors.

As for others stating the volunteers turned their backs on the City, not true. The Volunteers clearly gave notice to the City of their intentions. Calling their "thieves" is just out of line.

Of course everyone would like to be a farman now , do nothing and get paid. "The Jaws of Life " on my arm in blue . Come on down from your ivory towers Chris S , AKA the jaws of life.

Once again the failure of the mayor to make critical changes in top departmental chairs is causing these things to happen. He has known for the past YEAR that there are issues within SFD and SPD and he has failed to do anything. Slowly as we knew it would, the wheel is falling off his cart. It will only get worse for Jake Day unless he recognizes he HAS to make changes in these departments before all is lost. Again all this will reflect on his loss in reelection. Dumb ass doesn't see it and thinks leaving people in top positions will help him get re-elected. Leaving people like Barbs and SFD Chief will slowly destroy him. This is a good thing in the long run bc it will get him out of office by failing to be re-elected.

Ok we know it is the Paid firemen of Salisbury attacking Executive Culver, but can you enlighten us more on the City Police issue? Why would Fat Ass Hoppes and Homo Fake Day send the Salisbury Police Department to intervene with the volunteers at Station #1? Why were the locks changed? Another waste of precious tax money. What did the volunteers do that was illegal and what did they do to break the law? NOTHING!! This fits the City of Salisbury's agenda to prevent the volunteers at Station #1 from responding to any calls until July 1, 2017.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THIS IS EVIDENCE THAT RICK HOPPES AND JAKE DAY HAVE BEEN RUNNING OFF THE VOLUNTEERS AT THE SALISBURY FIRE DEPARTMENT!!

Mainly because they did not have the support of the other Volunteers. After Station 1 backed out on them they were left on an island. The city volunteers have suffered ever since. Station 2 was is a better place to do that, they actually owned their own equipment.

So the county takes the money it waste on the City F.D. builds a station in the county where service is not the best equips it, opens the doors and staffs it with Station 1 vols that are sick of cooking meals and shining boots for the lazy ones bingo you've got a very dedicated group of vols like you did years ago before the F.T. Firefighters started jerking them around trying to get the vols to quit so that HOPPPPER could hop into JAKEY's office and say those mean old vols won't fix my dinner and I need lots of dinner because I've got to feed all the other City FF that don't work they simply suck on the government tit and sleep!

You are correct. Jake Day is too stupid to understand that the volunteers have been the greatest asset of the City of Salisbury. It is going to cost the City of Salisbury a fortune to staff the fire trucks to chase ambulances which is not a requirement or a necessity.

Anonymous said...

Like any landlord / tenant issue, it was an illegal move for them to be locked out.

Sadly this is a reflection of the city and its attitudes on a whole.

I wonder if Ms Glanz has the experience to handle this one or will this be the first bus she is thrown under by any illegal directives from the good old boys club.

Does anyone think that the paid firemen are valuable and needed? Not really. Can they do a better job than the volunteers? Not really. Are there any real fires in Salisbury? Not really. And when there is the paid firemen have been known to let the property burn down or let someone die. There are rarely any real fires in Salisbury to start off with. Do you remember the big garage fire behind Station 16 the caught on fire when the paid duty crew was in the station eating dinner? They were yards away from the garage and it burnt to the ground. Do you remember the big house at the corner of Church and Truitt Streets? It was to much for the volunteers burnt to the ground. The paid firemen couldn't put out the fire and they had to call volunteers in from as far away as Delaware to put the fire out for them. Do you remember the fire where the little girl was locked in the utility room? The paid firemen couldn't save her! You see all these fires have happened within the last year or so while Rick Hoppes and Jake Day have been running off the volunteer firemen! Buildings have been lost and people have died in Salisbury because of the piss poor leadership of Rick Hoppes and Jake Day! Where is the damn outrage over that!!!

JoeAlbero said...

7:39, I couldn't agree more.

I have been stating for at least 10 years that Chief See and Gordy were doing everything they could to eliminate Volunteers, hence my issues with the LEADERSHIP of the SFD.

While they constantly went public stating they were doing everything they could to enlarge their Volunteer Force, they LIED.

Each Mayor along the way, Tilghman, Ireton and now Day are no help towards Volunteers. WHY, because they love to bring in all the funding in just about EVERY department in the City. The SFD, SPD, Zoo, all part of an accreditation organizations. Or shall I say, UNION? The strict demands to be involved in these organizations are killing taxpayers financially.

You never read about special trips around the country paid Firefighters, Police Officers and Zoo staff go on yearly. Every time the SFD purchases a new piece of equipment, several paid Firefighters get on a plane to INSPECT the equipment and the paid FF's will come back here and say, it's paid for by the manufacturer, PLLLLEEEEEASE! It's a part of the COST to the taxpayers and it's nothing short of a drinking party while away from home.

I say, this break up is fantastic. I hope Executive Culver does start putting up new SHELL buildings, (not castles) throughout the County for Volunteers. The City is shoving their accreditation crap down the county's throats with massive charges, yet the City hasn't been paying their bills for 10+ years to the county for the GOB and expenses within.

Once we educate the voting public and they see Culver is only protecting the taxpayers wallets, (something never seen under former LIBERAL leadership) they will immediately cast their votes towards Culver.

You sir are an idiot. You obviously have no idea about how and why things burn. Nor the staffing it takes to adequately attack a fire.

The fire in the "garage" on lake St was advanced upon arrival. There were also mass quantities of flammable materials in the building as it was a service bay for large vehicles. The fire was also discovered after having been established for some time.

The church and Truitt st fire was a direct result of not having enough staffing. The duty engine did what they could. But again, the fire was advanced at the time of discovery. Why don't you talk about the fact that volunteers from Delaware were on scene but the FIRST DUE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT NEVER SHOWED UP!!!

The same with the fire that killed that little girl. The duty crew had to come to STATION ONE'S DUE for an already advanced fire and guess what those volunteers didn't show up either.

Now let's go back in time a bit. Let me conjur up your memory of the Sylvia St fire. Had the duty crew been committed that family would have been dead. Because yet again the VOLUNTEERS FAILED TO RESPOND!! Are you noticing a trend yet? Probably not because judging from your statement that generated my response you're too dense to process information. So here I'll give you a hint. Most of the fires in this city here recently have experienced a delayed or total lack of response from the volunteers. So before blaming the paid crews learn something. Now please go start packing your stuff. Because your notice Mr. Station 1 Volunteer was not accepted and the city wants you out. You were worthless here and that will continue wherever you go. Because you're in this for the free coffee and T-shirts.

And before you come back with the only response you ever have when you get slapped in the face with facts; yes, I am a paid "farmin". But I'm not trying to justify my existence. Your lack of ability and commitment necessitates it...

Anonymous said...

Actually back in the day ALL firefighters were volunteers; not paid. Maybe its time we went back to that system because the paid way isn't working out so hot. Its an honor to volunteer to be a fireman. When you're a paid hack, you do it because it's a job.

It is sad when the first thing you clowns do is demonize someone who knows something about something and you don't but always assume you are right to begin with...

Watch and see if this is not what happens. A fire department is soon going to be needed at the airport. Station 1 volunteers will assume the building at the airport and service the station 1 territory that is already in the county. There will be a couple of paid FF at the airport 24/7 to cover the FFA requirements for the airport but the volunteers will handle the EMS and Fire calls in the county. No current fire station will lose any territory, station 1 will just cover their county territory. Funding will be another issue all together. Current County FD's are in need of additional funding. Will the County step up and help them? Station 1 volunteers already receive the same funding as the County stations.

Anonymous said...

Why have they been running commercials asking for volunteers?

Anonymous said...

If you think Culver didn't play a part in all of this you are blind. You really think that the station 1 volunteers would try something like this if they didn't already have a backup plan or support from the county. There have been secret meetings and discussions going on for a long time. Culver definitely wants this to happen and although I have no evidence I'm pretty sure he's knee deep in it. It gives him an excuse to weasel out of the city/county fire agreement.

You know what's funny about your statement Joe is the fact that the majority of the volunteers have had to turn to the paid guys for their drivers training. And we do whatever is necessary to help them further their career advancement. There's a huge population of the volunteers that prefer to ride with the duty crew because of the training and experience they receive. I've never once had a volunteer on the piece with me who was treated like they were less than us. Quite a few have stated they prefer to ride with us because of the internal turmoil within their own corporations and they just want to ride the apparatus and provide the service. Maybe it's time to poll the members who actually ride and not those who are currently playing the victim.

Your correct, 100℅ it should be noted, most Fire Dept "leaders" have never had to truly lead. They were promoted by attrition, or a "good ole boy system". For the many years that I have been involved with Salisbury's 3 fire departments, this really saddens me. I don't think that there is fun gatherings done together anymore. It would be so wonderful to have those fun times back again.

Almost ALL the paid crew are from Volunteers. As far as doing nothing, there are a lot of you who do nothing at points in your job, Dont LIE. Cops just driving around, not really doing anything. You sitting on computer reading social media. Here is a question, do you have the balls to run into a burning building risk your life for others. Have you ever tried to lift some fat ass, from third floor of an apartment building and carry their ass 3 flights down with two people and a 300# stretcher?

Medical calls, responses are an unknown - menaing it could be for lifting, it could be for help - 2 people cant work a cardiac situation.

You want all this service but unwilling to WAIT or pay for it.

Now, Career vs Volunteer - all bullshit, stop fighting and realize its all the same. Some are blessed to be able to be career firefighters. I remember EVERYONE of you, everyone one of you career guys when you were volunteers and begging for a chance to be career. Some of you I am very proud of - others, what a shame to act the way you do. Volunteers in Salisbury, I know most the old ones. Shame on you, to continue on with this. Should have proved the admin wrong by staffing and showing them it could be handled, then move or add a station to SFD correctly. Admins come and go, remember that. As far as Hoppes goes, there is only one Pinky - that was Higgons - and he was not much better.

Service, serving public = volunteer "There is nothing more satisfying than being, serving and helping others" We all forget this I guess....

Good luck to all involved.

Joe here is fact for your readers to digest. The current Salisbury fire district residents receive an ISO rating of 4 in the city and an 8 in the county portion. When and if this group of volunteers start to do business in the county, those residents insurance jumps to a 9. Translated that means an increase of 3 times their current premium. You see, there are some benefits to city fire protection services. I'm in the insurance business and have already received a hand full of calls today asking this question. I'm quite sure Mr. Culver will field the same question and better have a good answer.

Anonymous said...

The Salisbury FD uses a combination service with volunteer and paid firefighters which is quite cost effective. I'm curious why your readers cant see what is quite obvious to me. There are three stations with volunteer groupings and only one that is disgruntled. The other two are in support of the city and chief willing to serve. The Lone Wolf would seem to suffer from Spoiled Child Syndrome. Time for a spanking from Jake Day in my opinion.

He also tries to make people pass SCBA burn drills to fail them and run them off. He is so lazy he can't pass the tests required for the people under him. If a department head can't meet the same requirements of a police or fire department then they shouldn't be the chief officer.

This post came from a paid firemen no doubt and they want to throw darts about misconduct and sex. What about that time Gladwell, who is now a paid assistant chief getting some action of the hose bed of Engine 1 with a female deputy.

Yes that did happen and everyone knows that for a fact. This happened while he was on duty and he claimed the bragging rights of having sex on top of the hose bed of a fire truck. Every paid man's dream to make a conquest on a fire truck.

That same idiot munkin is now a high ranking paid chief in the City of Salisbury. That is MISCONDUCT and also the people that promoted him participated in misconduct because they knew about this and still promoted him.

Yes Little Jimmy is my idol. A paid fireman that gets to ride around in a $100,000 SUV thumping his chest like "Look at me" "Look at me." What a role model he is for the City. What a role model he is for all the little kids that tour the stations and the fire trucks. What a role model for all the new firemen joining the Salisbury Fire Department. BULLSHIT!! He is an embarrassment to every tax payer who funds that fire department!! He needs to resign and so does Hoppes, Tull and Scott.

Funny how these paid firemen are accusing the volunteers of doing something when in turn they are the ones that play on Xbox all day. These paid firemen forgot to mention the 16 recliners in the lounge at Station 16. The same lounge that has their Xbox's and TV's. They forgot to mention all the bed's at Station 16 for them to sleep in. They forgot to mention that the paid assistant chiefs have their own dorm room with a bed and TV's where they can hide all day long and nap when ever they want. They forgot to mention the 10 Recliners at the new Station #2 that the paid fire crew and paramedics get to lay back in while they are getting paid to work. What about the beds at Station #2 where the paid fire crews can get paid to sleep all night if they don't have any ambulance calls to chase. What a dream job to get paid to sleep and then be rested up to work another job after having 3 days off when you get off your shift the next day. Must be nice. Jake Day you are my hero for letting paid firemen sleep on the job.

You are correct with this statement, but eventually the volunteers at station 2 caved in to David See, Bill Gordy, Rick Hoppes and Barrie Tilghman.

February 23, 2017 at 4:51 AM

Mainly because they did not have the support of the other Volunteers. After Station 1 backed out on them they were left on an island. The city volunteers have suffered ever since. Station 2 was is a better place to do that, they actually owned their own equipment.

February 23, 2017 at 7:43 AM

Correct. Station #2 owned their own fire equipment and owned the building and had a copy of the ceremonial burned deed. Barrie Tilghman with the help of David See, Bill Gordy and yes Rick Hoppes tried to run the volunteers off, including Delegate Norman Conway who was a volunteer. Deputy Chief Tim Keenan didn't want anything to do with these clowns and that is why he retired. They crafted legislation to take control of all the volunteer possessions in the city. Fire trucks and the building and everything in the future that the volunteers bought with money that was gifted to the volunteers by the county. That is why Station 2 got a brand new $6 Million dollar building they didn't need. They had a perfectly good building so they claimed it was "condemned" and had it torn down. That way no one could have inspected the building and proved that nothing was wrong with the building and a new building shouldn't have been burnt. With the old building torn down and the land given back to Shore Distributors there is no way the volunteer corporations of #2 could kick out the city paid firemen and sue to take possession of their rightfully owned building. See, there was a method to Rick Hoppes' and Jim Ireton's madness when they built a new fire station and tore down the old one. Corruption at it's best! The City stole $6 million dollars by building a new fire palace when it wasn't needed.

They also go enroute before they leave the building, which falsely makes their response time look better.

I agree imposter. A lot of county stations ISO ratings are better than that. Trying to mislead the public.

False Station 2 has tried to fight these problems before and caved to the political pressure and a lot of volunteers left due to the BS. And Station 15 volunteers are almost non-existent due to the same BS.

It's up to the Wicomico County Chiefs Assc. Not solely SFD. You are spreading a lie.

It's "you're" not "your" little munchkin. Everyone said you had bad grammar and spelling.

I am confused because the city was running one of those fluffy little commercials begging for volunteers.

February 22, 2017 at 9:24 PM

That was all show. No one watches that channel. They wanted to say "We tried hard to recruit volunteers but there are none out there." That is bullshit. What is happening is that volunteers now have to fill out an application and turn it in to the chiefs office. If he doesn't like you or want you they will throw it away. Recently an Office Associate left and came back at night and turned in her resignation when no one was there. She didn't like Hoppes and he was trying to force her out anyway. A large stack of applications was found in her desk and they had been there for 2 years and they never acted on those applications and lost all those potential volunteers.

Prior to turning applications for volunteers into the chiefs office the volunteer corporations did a great job investigating the applicant, meeting with the wife and family and did their own background checks and then voted on them to bring them in. They had to take the first Firefighter I class within a 30 mile radius. That worked out perfectly fine until David See, Bill Gordy and Rick Hoppes made the change. They tried to act like a big time fire department and have their own "Fire Academy" so they tried to wait till they had 15 applicants for the class. Many of the potential volunteers got tired of waiting to hear back from the chiefs office and went to another department.

The Salisbury Fire Department has failed at everything they did under the leadership of Rick Hoppes. With the exception of spending tax dollars of course.

"Run into a burning building"...always trying to be a hero. Have you ever walked up to a car full of thugs on a back road at night with no backup? Quit worrying about police. Nice job calling someone a "fat ass". Shows what kind of public servant you were. Glad you're retired.

February 23, 2017 at 12:03 AM

This is 100% accurate.

Bumping up the stats = Self dispatching fire trucks nearly all ambulance calls. This means that the 911 center did not dispatch the fire trucks on the ambulance call. They only dispatched the ambulance because that is all that is needed. The paid officer on the fire engine will get reprimanded if they do not self dispatch themselves to the ambulance calls.

That's a Fact Jack!

Exactly. How can he hold others accountable for their actions when he has broken every rule there is? He should either be fired or demoted. He has no integrity and no ability to supervise others.

Excellent Commentary. This entire City Council and Mayor should be ousted. Every ranking officer in the Salisbury Fire Department should be fired or resign.

Please tell us more about your experience with landlord/tenant disputes. Actually please don't. You may want to reference the city charter before you start flapping your gums about something you know nothing about. They don't have to serve an eviction notice. They have no legal claim to the building. And they serve at the pleasure of the chief and at any time that right can be revoked. Now please go away, grown folks are having an intense slander fest...

One should educate themselves on all the sides. Are the volunteers at station 1 providing a service or just on paper. The career fire fighters are on duty 24 hours a day let's see how well it works out to have volunteers cover that responsibility. Whether you agree with the leadership or not chief hoppes has a job to do and that's to protect the citizens and visitor's to Salisbury. And if it can't be done with what he has to work with career or Volunteer he has to make changes.
As for volunteering I see no problem with it at all. But I understand that station 1 discouraged there volunteers from coming in when career people were there, to the point of not giving them credit for hours served. If that's the case then I say shame on them. What better way to make your argument then to say look were helping give you extra staffing.
The equipment and such is serviced and maintenance by the sbyfd feel lucky it doesn't have to come out of your pocket.
When you have to start cooking chicken or standing on a corner to make funds to pay for your next set of gear or fire engine you will soon find out how lucky you are.
If I was in charge of any fire company in wicomico County I would sure be asking why is secret meetings being held with station 1 volunteers and why are they getting so much money while we struggle.

Please explain to me why everyone thinks this is such a bad idea?

All of the other County Fire Departments are Volunteer. Some have a paid paramedics but still rely on the Volunteers to drive. I was honored to volunteer as a fire fighter/paramedic for 13 years in the County and never expected anything from anyone or did not have the "macho/God" attitudes of the paid crews in Salisbury.

Paid or Volunteer they all have the same training!!

Most of Station 1 territory is already in the County. I do not know of any fire department who would refuse mutual aid to their brothers in need. It's not about the firemen/EMS; it's about saving lives and property.

I guess you'll be applying during the next hiring process then?
