MD DREAM Act Petition Nets Over 100,000 Signatures

MDPetitions.com, the organization founded by Del. Neil Parrott (R-2B) to force the Maryland DREAM Act to the ballot in 2012, has announced that they have turned in more than 100,000 signatures. In addition to the 47,288 signatures already certified, 74,980 signatures were turned in on Thursday.

The WaPo reports:

Del. Neil C. Parrott (R-Washington) and Del. Pat McDonough (R-Baltimore), who led the signature-gathering effort, cast their haul as a success for Marylanders who care about enforcing immigration laws and predicted the state’s voters would reject the controversial measure.

Supporters of the petition drive need to remember that this is just the hurdle number two. After the signatures are certified (there will be more than enough), the court battle begins. Assuming we are successful in court, the campaign begins in earnest.

Remember, all of us who support strong borders and national sovereignty are racists, bigots, sexists, homophobes, closet Klansmen, etc., etc.

For out Roman Catholic brethren, keep an eye out for pro-DREAM Act rhetoric from the pulpit of our state’s catholic parishes. I agree with the Maryland Catholic Conference that we are all one family under God. I just don’t think that I should have to pay for my cousins’ college tuition.

The ACLU is trying so hard to get many of the signatures decertified so this law goes into effect. They are fighting to keep it from going to a ballot vote. I have an idea. If there is SO much support to get this on the ballot, how about we don't spend anymore money on checking signatures, etc and PUT IT ON THE STINKING BALLOT for Maryland voters to vote on it. They are fighting it SO VERY HARD because they know if/when it goes on the ballot for a vote, it will be struck down with a HUGE, HUGE majority vote. Keep getting those signatures. They can't ignore us! if they do, we can take them to court over misrepresentation. THEY WORK FOR US!!!

Great job voters of MD. Laws like this should be put on the ballot first anyway rather than one sided politicians forcing things down our throat. I hope this BS law is killed in the election by a landslide. That will go to show these sorry politicians you cant force anything on the people that we dont want. Next should be the health care law. Let the people decide not the politicians in DC that are so out of touch with the American people. Maybe then they will realize that it is For the People and by the People, not for the politicians by the politicians. Take that OMalley and Casa De Maryland. The people have spoken so now you can shut up!

"I just don’t think that I should have to pay for my cousins’ college tuition"

But they are helping pay for yours...or any other Maryland resident. Doesn't that mean anything?

The vast majority of these kids have not broken any laws themselves...they were brought here by their parents when they were young. They and their parents are Maryland residents and pay Maryland taxes.

They aren't getting free tuition. They are just paying the same rate as any other Maryland resident.

I get that this fight is a proxy for people's anger over inconsistent enforcement of our federal immigration policy...but do we really want to punish young, law-abiding immigrant children for that?

9:22, doesn't matter if they've broken any other laws. The fact is, THEY HAVE and continue to break the immigration/legalization laws of this country. They can go through the process and become legal, then establish their state residence, then go to college.

9:41 - and what do you propose they do while they wait for the stunningly slow legalization process? No doubt you think they should be denied employment... Should they sit around and collect govt assistance?

Why not go to community college and learn the skills they will need to be successful?

BTW, can you held responsible for breaking the law when your parents brought you here from Canada when you were 3? Breaking the law means more than being in the wrong place/wrong time. And remember, you're not old enough to apply for residency until you're 18.

If only supporters were around when Europeans started coming to short hundreds of years ago. The Native Americans would have appreciated the help.
