McDonnell Still Wants to Sell State Liquor Stores

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Thursday that he hopes to revive privatization of the state's liquor stores during the 2012 General Assembly.

Appearing on the "Ask the Governor" radio show on WRVA (1140 AM), McDonnell said he has six more months to try to sell the General Assembly on the merits of a proposal that was soundly rejected this year.

"The state has no business selling Grey Goose (vodka) or Jack Daniel's (whiskey)," he said.

Tucker Martin, McDonnell's director of communications, said "details regarding our next steps will be released at the proper time and after consultation with key legislative leaders."

Two proposals advanced by McDonnell to sell the state's ABC stores and get out of the liquor business were rejected by the 2011 General Assembly on a bipartisan basis. They did not get out of committees for a floor vote.

Since that failed effort, the issue has been largely ignored.

Agree with McDonnell on this one. I'm neither a fan of county control or state control...all it's about is attempting to "shave" a little more off the top to put in the states' coffers. There is no legitimate reason to be involved in such transactions, outside of regulation/taxation.
