Where Have All The Good People Gone?

Let's be frank. You can't hide the fact that down to earth, good people, (locally, anyway) are nowhere to be found when it comes to Public Office Candidates.

Now I'm not saying those who are running for Office aren't good people. I'm simply saying there aren't enough of them.

One would think after all those Tea Parties and the introduction of the new AFP there would be quite a few people interested in taking a leadership roll in local government. That's just not the case.

IMHO, the Tea Parties and the AFP, (both good organizations) have simply brought out angry Americans sick and tired of the way things have been run for so many years.

Obama had no real experience, yet he's was a black candidate and Americans wanted "Change". Kratovil, another candidate with absolutely no experience in politics got elected and quite frankly with exception to a few votes, Frank has done a pretty darned good job.

So where are all the Republicans? We have serious problems and issues right here on the Eastern Shore, yet very few people have stepped up to the plate for our own kind of "Change".

If you look at Rick Pollitt's history, (or shall I say the new form of Executive government) we have seen Wicomico County's expenses go through the roof. Purchases of additional park land, a parking lot for the Civic Center, the list goes on and on. Now you can't just point a finger at Rick Pollitt, the majority of the County Council agreed to make all these changes and expenses. Are you satisfied?

Rick Pollitt doesn't seem to know how to do a budget and relies on "Old School" staff to help him through the process. Rick is a wonderful man but as I've said in the past, cuts should have started years ago but instead there has been more spending, all of which will continue to cost the taxpayers locally. Not only will these purchases cost taxpayers to improve these properties, it will also cost taxpayers to maintain them as well.

Joe Ollinger has jumped into the ring and claims to be a registered republican, yet his platform looks more like a dictator and he wants to do things that just can't be done as County Executive. I respect the fact that he's willing to give it a shot but I personally am not confident he's the kind of "Change" Wicomico County needs.

If I personally had a choice for a candidate to run for County Executive, my first choice would be Robin Holloway. Confident, straight to the point, no special interests and a no BS kind of Gal. She's the Debbie Campbell of the Board of Education. You know, 3-2 but in her case, 6-1 votes almost every time. Unfortunately Robin has no real interest in the job but boy she'd make a great County Executive.

On the City Council side of things you've got Gary Comegys seat, Terry Cohen and Louise Smith. Again, if I had my way I'd like to see two seats go to other people with interest. Louise Smith claimed she was only going to stick around for one term but my guess is, if they get some really serious competition she'll be running again.

While Comegys does have a lot of wisdom, (which I personally appreciate) his health is certainly a concern. I personally feel that having a Council that disagrees is a healthy thing. Unfortunately the debate between this Council and the former Council has not been healthy debate. It's been more personal attacks. Gary will have a difficult time keeping his seat if a good challenger comes forth.

Terry Cohen simply cannot lose her seat IF she chooses to run again. I say IF because Terry spends quite a bit of her time researching each and every item, (FOR YOU) to assure everything is Kosher. I can only imagine how frustrating it is on Terry, knowing she spent all that time on each piece of legislation and it constantly gets shot down. Besides that, Terry has great opportunities to teach and do other things that could bring in far more income than the $10,000.00 a year the City pays her. Don't be too surprised if Terry decides not to run again.

So, getting back to the main topic at hand, where are all the Good People? Who do you know who might be interested in running for Office in the City & County. Would you agree we need "Change"?

I'll close with this. Being in Public Office is a very trying job. You cannot please everyone, that's for sure. Then there's the local Blogs, (including mine) that add quite a bit of pressure. That being said, I personally feel that pressure is absolutely necessary because the MSM simply provides information they are told. I'll never forget the many times GA Harison would challenge the Daily Times by saying, you knew that was a lie, yet you printed it anyway. They'd reply, we only printed what the Mayor quoted.

While I can understand their position, the MSM, (per their own protocol) cannot provide their opinion in an article and that's the main difference between the Blogs and a Newspaper. I have had numerous conversations with the Management of the Daily Times where they openly admit, they'd love to do what I do, but they can't. I respect that and I understand where they're coming from. We're two different forms of publication.

"It's a tough job but somebody has to do it."

so are you getting ready to throw your hat in the ring Joe? lol - sounds like it to us. If you do, you will have a heckuva lot of support and I suppose a "few" who don't. Oh well, I guess we can dream.

Joe you left out the Kingpin of the City's ills. Ireton cant make a decision on anything. I guess he thinks he can stall the police and fire chief appointment for four years. Hamburgers or hot dogs Jimbo. Make a damn decision, its not rocket science.

Outside the city limits.

anonymous 10:08, Ireton isn't up for re-election. That's why there's no mention of him.

Joe,

How 'bout a running list of who's running for what...county, city, state...?

There's a bunch I'd vote to get rid of - but who are the alternatives?

My choice, hands down, would be Stevie Prettyman. She is extremely knowledgeable about the workings of government. She is a savvy businesswoman, having owned her own business, I believe. She is popular, often running for her seat on County Council unopposed. She is not afraid of confrontation when necessary. Unlike Rick Pollitt, she looks out for the taxpayers. Finally, she has the financial wherewith-all to run a campaign. She would make a wonderful County Executive.

My second choice would be Joe Holloway. He is would be more of a populist candidate than Prettyman. He, too, is very taxpayer conscious. As a Councilman, he always asks questions about spending. While he may not be as "polished" as Stevie, he, too, would make a creditable candidate for Executive.

Those of us who have known Terry Cohen since she was young are shocked that she is still here. She could be anywhere doing anything. But she was also very devoted to her parents.

Now that they are gone, who knows? For Salisbury's sake, I hope she stays. Imagine what this place could have been if she had been able to spend her term doing something other than mitigating the disasters of Tilghman, Dunn, Comegys and Cathcart.

For her sake, I hope she moves on to something far better.

If you elect people running who are involved with special interest groups, you'll get nothing but votes to benefit their special interest group.
And yes Joe, political office is not an easy thing to do. I did many years on a local Town Council. I will say that I was never berated on blogs for the way I voted on issues. That's because I was involved with NO special interests. I knew I was there to represent the taxpayers and to vote how I felt was best for them and/or how they expressed they felt on the issue(s).
If more people would just do this, we'd have a whole lot better elected officials! It's a job, not an ego trip. Even though some think and ego trip is more fun, they end up looking like idiots!

I think she will to, whats the point anymore. What are you trying to save? Salisbury will never be what it once was, never.

Salisbury doesn't have to be what it was but it damn sure doesn't have to remain as it is. Terry Cohen should run for County Exec. She could get the job done and would garner support of all parties because she has proven she is fiscally responsible. At least she would be getting paid what she is worth instead of that pittance she gets from the city with a council that doesn't appreciate anyone with a functioning brain.

Shes done enough for long enough, she deserves to go enjoy her life.

I don't want her to go! If we can just get two people more people with a functioning brain next election, we can take this city back!

Stay on city council, Terry!

Please?

Cohen, Smith must go. They dither and bicker over who can make themself look best. They haven't made a sound decision in months. Too bad they can't take Campbell with them.

Comegys has to retire for health reasons. Shields should retire for mental health reasons.

Yes, an entirely new Council is needed to get the City on a solid course. No leader you can name, other than a dictator like Barrie, could work with this bunch.

Ollinger is a self-important, uninformed boob. If he was elected, he save money by crippling the County. County Council is a little better than City Council but that's not saying much.

Prettymen, yeah, she's tough! Does her homework and looks out for the taxpayers every time. Don't try to lie to her. She remembers everthing. The county is lucky to have her. Sombody's running against her this time, but shell win. People know who they can trust.

Your right Joe. Robin Holloway could be a winner in the executive race. She's been fair on the school board. I've known her since JMB days. She is willing to listen to all sides and she does her homework. She's also not bad to look at.

Terry Cohen doesn't dither over anything and there would be no bickering if the 3 boobs knew what the hell they were talking about. Terry researches deeply and doesn't speak without substantial information to back her up. Whenever there is a legal question she researches to the point that even the city solicitor agrees with her.

Every election the same thing is said about getting new people to replace the boobs yet things don't change. Look at the change we got with the mayor, he's just another Weezie. Say one thing do the opposite.

Anonymous said...

6:31, not only do the 3 boobs not know what they are talking about, they don't know what Cohen or Campbell is talking about either. Just not smart enough.

I don't know how to feel about the next election. You are so right about Ireton being another Smith. I don't know if I can trust anyone else who might run. They both have ruined that for me and so many others I know.

Like them or not, Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen have both been true to what they said they are and what they would do. Imagine how different Salisbury would be if we tried their approach for awhile instead of continuing the downward spiral of Tilghman, Dunn, Comegys, Cathcart, Smith and Shields? I wish these people would give up the power trips just for a few years and let someone else's way have a chance.
