Statement from Bob Ehrlich regarding Northrop Grumman’s decision to move its headquarters to Virginia instead of Maryland
ANNAPOLIS – Bob Ehrlich today released the following statement in response to reports that Northrop Grumman has chosen not to move its headquarters to Maryland.
“Northrop Grumman’s decision not to move its headquarters to a high-tax state like Maryland is very disappointing, but not the least bit surprising. Some reports indicate that Maryland was never even a serious contender.
“The O’Malley Administration has shown little to no understanding of what it will take to attract and retain employers or stabilize Maryland’s economy. The business of creating jobs is not a talking point for speeches. It’s a governing philosophy – one that has been nonexistent in Maryland for four years. The facts are overwhelming: more than 3,000 small businesses have closed in Maryland in the last year alone, our unemployment rate has doubled since 2006, taxes on employers have risen dramatically under Governor O’Malley, and our business ranking has plummeted compared to states like Virginia.
“We cannot expect true economic recovery in Maryland without a fundamental change in mindset in Annapolis. As governor, my central mission will be improving the economic prospects of every Marylander who wants a job or dreams of starting a small business. That will begin with my plan to lower Maryland’s sales tax by 20% and to cut the bureaucratic red tape that prevents economic growth.”
BACKGROUND: The Washington Business Journal reported the following Monday, “The defense giant's decision to locate in Northern Virginia comes as no surprise to many observers, who felt the inclusion of Maryland on the short list was simply to serve as leverage in the economic development game.”

Maryland gained 35,000 jobs in the month of March. More than Ehrlich ever got. O'Malley's showing Ehrlich how a real Governor does the job.
