A Loudoun County man died Saturday after a freak accident on the softball diamond.
Well-known custom home builder George Crisp, 55, was pitching in adult softball game when a ball was batted back at him.
"George pitched the ball, the guy hit a line drive toward him, he turned his head to avoid it -- just like you would, tried to put his glove up," said Crisp's friend David Pittman, a pastor at Temple Baptist Church in Herndon, Va. "Didn’t get his glove up in time and it hit him right here, right underneath the ear."

Softball or baseball, pitching is one of the most dangerous positions. And in slow pitch softball, the pitcher is only 50 feet from home plate. Factor in slower reaction time for older players and it's a miracle more aren't killed playing each year.
From what I've heard from people that were at the tournament, it was a 1 pitch tournament (you get pitched a single pitch either hit or strike out) and your team supplies your own pitcher. In other words, (from what I've heard/read) it was his own teammate that hit the ball. I couldn't imagine.....*cringe*

Very sad. I can't imagine how his family feels or the batter feels. Just awful.
NoName is correct - you pitch to your own team. It was also fast pitch softball. Also, the pitcher is not allowed to field the ball because he is on the same team as the batters, and could obviously interfere. That is what led to the tragedy. He had to try to get out of the way rather than field the ball; otherwise he would have gotten a glove up.
Moral of story..Enjoy life and do the things that make you happy..Lfe is too short not to!
