Perhaps everyone should rethink this question and turn it around? You see, Exxon makes, (I believe) 8 cents per gallon. Think about that. They have to refine it, then transport it and in the end they make 8 cents per gallon. Now consider our very own federal government collects 18 cents per gallon in taxes and does nothing. The mainstream media wants to talk about the oil companies and how much money they're making. Granted, those kinds of numbers are ridiculous, but the real story lies in what our very own government makes. This is just another reason why Marylanders should vote Andy Harris for Congress.

Unions, Verizon Agree to 'Stop the Clock' on Contract Expiration

Washington, D.C. -- The Communications Workers of America announced tonight that in light of progress that has been made in bargaining for a new contract with Verizon, it has agreed to "stop the clock" on the expiration of the current contract and postpone strike action while negotiations continue. The current contract will remain in effect.
The current contract, which covers 65,000 members of CWA and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) who work for Verizon from Massachusetts to Virginia, was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, August 3rd.

Last night two gentlemen were jumped and attacked at a local Motel off Rt. 13 behind the new Rite Aide.
Gang Members from the MS 13 Gang beat the crap out of these two men who were Hospitalized and swearing revenge against the group that attacked them from behind.
The State Police and Delmar Police were out in force last night looking for these Gang Members. Don't tell me there aren't Gangs in the Salisbury area. Things are NOT looking up Folks! With Chief Webster on board, I'd say, you better get used to it and carry a BIG STICK!

Not too early to consider who will be next mayor

"It is almost that time again; in February it will be time to elect a mayor of Salisbury. I know it is early, but it is now time to stop and think about what our present mayor has not done for our great city.
Mayor Barrie Parsons Tilghman has been in office the better part of three terms. If we look back to when she was first elected, not much has changed for the betterment of the city.
The West Side is still the mess it has been, with little or no change. Our police department deserves a bigger raise than 1 percent, but the money was used for other things.
Our mayor has made the city bigger, but not better in many ways. Our water still has not been fixed and our water bills keep going up.
It is past time for a change.
These are a few of the things that need changing. I am, hopefully, your next mayor.

Golf Tourney To Support Local Resident & NTAF

The Ocean City Elks Golf Associates is hosting a golf tournament Saturday, August 16 to benefit the National Transplant Assistance Fund and local resident Ann Kerns Bowley.
Bowley, a 47 year-old wife of a member of the Ocean City Elks, recently underwent a 17-plus hour organ transplant operation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in February of this year. She received four donor-organs with the cost of the operation exceeding $2.5 million. Some of that cost was covered by insurance and the NTAF assisted with the majority of the remaining expenses. Ann Bowley maintains a “let’s get on with it” attitude despite enduring her complex gastrointestinal illnesses for the past nineteen years. Ann managed to raise a family, build a business, care for a home and be a good friend and neighbor.
The fund-raising golf tournament will be played at the Ocean City Golf Club Saturday, August 16 with a shotgun-start at 1 pm. It will be a Captains Choice format with a capacity of 144 players. The entry fee of $100 per person or $400 per team includes golf and dinner.
After golf, there will be a an awards dinner/dance at the Ocean City American Legion on 24th St. The food is being catered by St. Germain’s Catering Company and features a choice of beef, seafood and chicken. There will be many door prizes and numerous silent and live auction items.

Mercedes Loses
Yesterday in Berlin, an elderly Lady decided to park on Main Street. She pulled into what is obviously a ton of space to fit, yet she slammed into this Motorcycle and sent it flying. Fortunately no one was on the Bike.
Here's where it gets interesting. She parked her vehicle, got out of the car and instantly went shopping. (Click on the image to enlarge and see just how much room she really had)
In the mean time, people started calling the Police to report the accident. By the time they showed up, the woman had returned to her Mercedes, got in the car just as the Police were pulling up and took off!
Fortunately they did get her tag number as well as the names of several witnesses but quite frankly, that took a lot of nerve. It's not like she had no clue she hit the Motorcycle!
Heck, who knows, maybe it was her husband's Bike and she found him cheating on her?
Handicapped Carts In WalMart & Sam's Club & Like Stores
One subject that I have not seen addressed since I've been reading your
blog is the need for more handicapped carts in the large stores, and
management seeing to it that the carts are charged and in running
condition.
My husband is handicapped enough that when we go to the larger stores,
unless it is a very good day for him, he usually needs to use a cart.
It has become a rare occasion anymore to find a workable cart. Today
while at the Fruitland WalMart he was about to get into one when a
younger woman cut him off and sat herself down and drove away. There
were two other carts but they were "out of order".
Also, another thing I would like to mention is the fact that there is no
place to sit down inside these stores and there needs to be benches
available for an older person or handicapped person to sit and rest. In
the Florida Walmart stores, they have benches inside the store in the
large space in front of the checkout counters. This works very well and
would benefit many shoppers.
I'd like to hear some comments from others who are experiencing the
same. Also, why are so many carts "out of order"??

Common Sense
My parents told me about Mr. Common Sense early in my life and told me I would do well to call on him when making decisions. It seems he was always around in my early years but less and less as time passed by until today I read his obituary. Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance. For Common Sense had served us all so well for so many generations.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Aspirin, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust ; his wife, Discretion ; his daughter, Responsibility ; and his son, Reason He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm a Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Local Gas Prices

Gordy Tiger Marts Charging Sales Tax . . . WAWA Is Not!

I think you need to hear this. . . then go visit for yourself and try it. . . as seeing is believing.
Everyday at the end of each workday, I usually stop-in to Gordy's Tigermart and purchase a 24 ounce Rock Star Energy drink. It makes no difference which location as they are all doing this. The price says $2.99 on their walk-in cooler. I take it to the register, the clerk scans the item and says that will be $3.17. No big deal. . . I've been doling out the money for months up until just a few weeks ago when I caught onto the scandal.
Now here is clencher . . .If you go to either one of the WAWA's their price is $2.89 for the same 24 ounce drink . . .but with no sales tax.
Question; where is the 6% going that is being charged at the Gordy Tigermarts? Is Gordy pocketing the money or is he erroronously collecting and paying the State of Maryland for these items.
I thought all of the people visiting your site might be interested on the price inconsistancy being charged to their customers. It may be on other items to. . . but I can tell you first hand it happens every single time on the Rock Star Energy drinks I have purchased there.

Will Webster & Albero Kiss & Make Up?
It seems that some of the 3rd Floor personnel at the Salisbury Police Department are upset with me because I have exposed some information they feel important to an ongoing investigation. They are also upset because they claim I've taken some pot shots at the Chief recently as well as Officer Underwood, the hardest working Officer in the Department.
I had a Post ready to go up yesterday that pretty much blew a case their handling right out of the water but I chose to table it because I didn't want to interfere with their investigation. My feeling however was, I couldn't understand why they were keeping certain things so quiet? After giving it a lot of thought I decided that this was none of my business why, I couldn't expose this information, so I didn't.
While speaking to this Officer today I explained I had the Intel Info on this Case and gave him some details from that Intel Document to prove I did in fact have it. His first response was, when we find out who gave it to you, he's out of a job.
First of all, who said it was a He? Secondly, how can you fire someone that doesn't work for you? Thirdly, do you think that other Agencies have a loyalty to the SPD? OBVIOUSLY NOT!
However, the paranoia that goes on within the SPD is alarming. In the past, certain Officers were demoted because they actually have the NERVE to speak to Joe Albero. NOT give me info, (remember that paranoia things I mentioned earlier) like they felt had happened. My sources were NOT within the SPD. Police Officers, (with all due respect) are a lot like Firefighters. When they get a lot of time on their hands, they try to do that one upmanship thing internally and then outside their own Department. The idea that it must have come from within is a joke!
However, you can't tell the Police that, they know everything because they're detectives. It reminds me of when my Wife was working at the Salisbury Zoo and the Mayor and Chiefy decided they were going to create a way to shut me and my Wife up from exposing the animal deaths at the Zoo. So they came up with this scheme where they decided my Wife had allegedly stolen drugs from the Zoo to take home and euthanize one of our puppies. It was about the dumbest thing one could ever think of but Barrie Tilghman was involved, so stupid isn't far fetched.
Nevertheless, they created a CRIMINAL Investigation against my Wife and interviewed all these people we knew. However, they left out the three most important parts of their investigation. Number one, they forgot to interview my Wife. Secondly, they forgot to interview Dr. Tragle who's name was on the License. The third part they forgot about was the records book! You see, Dr. Tragle took his business VERY seriously as well as my Wife and every single cc of meds were documented and recorded. So why would you think they forgot all about those three main things? Because they wanted to intimidate her and create yet ANOTHER horrible image of Jennifer Albero being an animal killer and stealing drugs.
This was before I really knew Davis Ruark and when it hit his desk he simply threw it into the trash and it ended right then and there. However, the damage was already done.
All that being said, I'm NOT so hip on Chief Webster and his ability to really handle ANY case professionally and I have first hand knowledge through experience as to why he's NOT trustworthy. So do I believe holding back the information is helping their cause. NO! However, because I respect the SPD and for what it stands for, I'll keep my mouth shut through this Blog and not reveal the information I know.
Some of these 3rd Floor people don't give you enough time in a day to explain why things are the way they are. I'll simply say here, there's a reason as to why you're all paranoid over there and have a camera right outside my 300 W. Main Street Office. Like I said the other day about Willey, funny how you pick on the ones "I" happen to know and NO ONE ELSE!

County Executive Pollitt Answers Questions About WCDC
Thank you for your interest and questions regarding the recent article in the Daily Times about the new agreement between the United States Marshall’s Service and the Wicomico County Department of Corrections. In response to your primary concern the information cited in the article was neither a misprint nor was it meant to be misleading but perhaps it was incomplete. Specifically the article quoted Director Devenyns as saying “Additionally, it increases the hourly rate for correctional officers overseeing the inmates to $22, up from $17”. What was lacking is the explanation that these monies are provided by the U. S. Marshall’s Service to reimburse Wicomico County for any time a Correctional Officer is required to tran sport, watch or guard a Marshall’s Service inmate outside the Detention Center. This provision was included in the contract to ensure Wicomico County was paid for any additional Correctional Officer manpower needed to maintain custody of the USMS inmates. It was not meant to establish a baseline rate of pay for all Correctional Officers.
Indeed, that would be impossible because each of the 120 + individual Correctional Officers are paid based on years of service, rank and other factors. Therefore, the $22 hour reimbursement rate represents an average of the hourly rate paid to all C/O’s and when these funds are paid to Wicomico County, they are deposited in the County’s General Fund. I would also like you to know that when the Department of Corrections transports USMS inmates, Wicomico County is reimbursed at the federal mileage rate of $.58 cents per mile and these funds too are deposited in the General Fund.
Finally, I do understand and appreciate the difficult nature of the work performed by these employees and that is why I have supported the adoption of Hazardous Duty Pay for Correctional Officers. As you are no doubt aware, these are difficult economic times for everyone; individuals and governments. In preparing this year’s budget, revenue sources were down significantly and simply put there wasn’t enough to go around but, with the support of the County Council, we were able to fund a 3.5% increase for all employees. Rest assured that the compensation package for Correctional Officers is but one of my priorities and hopefully we will have more funding options and opportunities in the next fiscal year.

AS THE JAIL CHURNS PART II
A small update as to Chief Investigator William Hardin. As you may recall Mr. Hardin was banned from the building of WCDC and his office padlocked. Mr. Hardin has since met with Director Devenyns. After the meeting let it be known that not Mr Hardin smiling, but in the words of one observer,he was skipping to his car. The padlock has since been removed from the office door. Who should be charged with destruction of county property?
Another little tidbit. This past Tuesday a fight broke out on the US Marshall housing unit. Officers responded to breakup the fight. The unit was ordered to lock down in their cells. Guess
what happened next. You guessed it, they refused. After about ten minutes order was restored and the participants of the fight were removed. Now do not get me wrong, this does happen in jails all over the country and most of the time with more injuries than occur in our fine jail. Captain Foreman ordered for the housing unit to remain on lockdown for a week because of their failure to follow orders and lock into their cells. This is also normal procedure. What is not normal was what happened the next day. Col. Kimble along with Capt. Foreman went to the above mentioned unit to talk with the inmates. After listening to their complaints, he let them off lock down. This is a man who has many years as an administrator in corrections at the county and state level. He has undermined the authority of his command staff and every officer at WCDC. He has shown that he is taking the word of the inmates over officers even though he will say that he never does this. The next time that officers have a problem do you think the inmates are going to listen since little if any disciplinary action will be taken?
If the Administration of WCDC would like to respond to these allegations, please do so. I may not have all the facts perfectly correct and would be glad tosee them correct any mistakes that have been made.

Many of the 119 employees set to lose their Howard County-issued vehicles are emergency and pubic safety responders, but department leaders said they’ll strive to continue meeting all resident needs.
“It’s an unfortunate situation but also understandable why they’re being taken away,” said Jim Irvin, director of the Department of Public Works, whose 44 employees expected to lose the vehicles by September are generally those who need to respond to situations and emergencies after-hours less than three times a week.
“It’s certainly disappointing ... but we have to be prudent in what we’re doing,” said Howard Fire Chief Joe Herr.
County Executive Ken Ulman said his decision this week to reduce the number of take-home vehicles from 207 to 88 was not easy and was prompted by making the operation of government more efficient.
“We had some tough conversations with department heads who were defending their employees, but I tried to approach it from both a management and taxpayer basis,” he said, referring to the anticipated savings of about $700,000.
A big part of these discussions was with leaders of the police, fire and public works departments, as well as the sheriff’s office, which are the major emergency and public safety responders in the county.
In the police department, two civilian employees, including spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn who drove 9,404 miles in 2007, also are expected to lose their county-issued cars.
The police department Wednesday announced plans to:
» Discontinue issuing take-home cars for some out-of-county personnel on on-call assignments
» Place restrictions on vehicles used by supervisors.
During the next two weeks, county department heads can appeal to Chief Administrative Officer Lonnie Robbins who will determine any oversights in the decision.
“We’re not going to reduce our service to the public,” said Robbins.
“That’s why we’re having this appeals process to ensure we’re being fair and equitable. We’ll be open to anything they have to say.”

“It’s an unfortunate situation but also understandable why they’re being taken away,” said Jim Irvin, director of the Department of Public Works, whose 44 employees expected to lose the vehicles by September are generally those who need to respond to situations and emergencies after-hours less than three times a week.
“It’s certainly disappointing ... but we have to be prudent in what we’re doing,” said Howard Fire Chief Joe Herr.
County Executive Ken Ulman said his decision this week to reduce the number of take-home vehicles from 207 to 88 was not easy and was prompted by making the operation of government more efficient.
“We had some tough conversations with department heads who were defending their employees, but I tried to approach it from both a management and taxpayer basis,” he said, referring to the anticipated savings of about $700,000.
A big part of these discussions was with leaders of the police, fire and public works departments, as well as the sheriff’s office, which are the major emergency and public safety responders in the county.
In the police department, two civilian employees, including spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn who drove 9,404 miles in 2007, also are expected to lose their county-issued cars.
The police department Wednesday announced plans to:
» Discontinue issuing take-home cars for some out-of-county personnel on on-call assignments
» Place restrictions on vehicles used by supervisors.
During the next two weeks, county department heads can appeal to Chief Administrative Officer Lonnie Robbins who will determine any oversights in the decision.
“We’re not going to reduce our service to the public,” said Robbins.
“That’s why we’re having this appeals process to ensure we’re being fair and equitable. We’ll be open to anything they have to say.”

Well, it appears our African-American friends have found yet something else to be pissed about. A black congresswoman (this would be Sheila Jackson Lee, of Houston), reportedly complained that the names of hurricanes are all Caucasian sounding names.
She would prefer some names that reflect African-American culture such as Chamiqua, Tanisha, Woeisha, Shaqueal, and Jamal. I am NOT making this up!
She would also like the weather reports to be broadcast in 'language' that street people can understand because one of the problems that happened in New Orleans was, that black people couldn't understand the seriousness of the situation, due to the racially biased language of the weather report.

Salisbury Police & Health Department Shut Down Chuck Wagon
The SPD & Health Department cracked down on the Chuck Wagon in the parking lot of the Chesapeake Inn today.
What's most interesting is, the Health Department doesn't have enough man power to inspect ALL of the run down restaurants in violation but they have the time to track down a Chuck Wagon delivering food to these people at very reasonable prices.
Granted, if things weren't right, I can understand that. However, have you talked to the people working in many of the restaurants around Salisbury? It's unbelievable what people are saying!
There were several Police Cars in that parking lot. Maybe they were doing something else, I don't know. Nonetheless, I think everyone gets the point about too many people in a room. Let these people eat.
The Thrift Lodge Inn Fails Inspection
This afternoon around 1:30 PM the Thrift Lodge Inn had their date with Salisbury's Code and Compliance Division and failed miserably.
Of the 35+ rooms that were being used from this Motel, 16 of them had no smoke detectors, smoke detectors taken off the wall or a battery just about dead. Once again there were rooms with Hot Plates in them for cooking and spoiled food in many of the rooms as well.
In one of the rooms, things were so bad they had to relocate the two gentlemen staying there or give them their money back. From the looks of them walking away from the Motel, they booked instead.
The City is cracking down hard on these violations but let me assure you, the prostitutes were still out and about everywhere and they didn't care who was walking through their Motel. The rooms were just disgusting!
Once again, more News you're NOT getting from WMDT. WBOC did in fact come out in their Chopper and took some shots from the air. However, until the read this story, they have nothing to go by because there was no Reporter. No Daily Times either.
Although the Salisbury Fire Department was asked by Code and Compliance to be there to back up the Inspections and support them along with the SPD, the Fire Department refused to come out, even after they were called asking why they weren't there. Fortunately, Chief Webster sent in additional Officers to help back up and support these two women doing the Inspections.
They can post all the God Messages they want, this place is HELL!

More Input On Motels

I didn't want to post this in comments because my computer automatically posts with my name on comments. When I was a kid, my mom got into a marriage with a bad person and as a result, we ended up leaving him with absolutely no notice or money. She changed jobs, and we basically went into hiding. We were literally homeless for awhile, and we were one of those people who live in motels. My mom is an honest and good person, and she worked her ass off to better our place in life and to get her feet back on solid ground.
The reason I mention that is that you're right--these people who are getting "flushed out" are humans and they do have rights and needs. However, I would imagine that if we went back into that time and place where it was me and my mom sleeping in a motel room, if there were a "raid" in an effort to flush out the druggies and prostitutes from where we were staying, I'd imagine that she would be grateful that the city was making an effort to get those types of people away from me.
And as for those long-term residents that "can't" get a place to live otherwise, I just don't believe it. A good and honest person who wants a better life for themselves and their family has got to know that there is a way to live better than a motel room. My mom did it just driving a cab. That's it. Within a few months of losing her footing in life, we were back in a nicer, permanent place to live, and we never had a problem after that.
There are also so many programs out there to help people have a home. There's section 8 housing, affordable housing, temporary cash assistance, food stamps, amongst other things to make it possible to survive. All of these things are easy to apply for. If someone wants a better life than a motel room, they can get it. The help is there and quite easily attainable.
So when I don't have sympathy for those who were inconvenienced by the "raid" last night, my lack of sympathy comes from the point of view of the child that lives in one of those rooms with their single, working mom trying to make a better life for both of them. That child deserves to not have a meth lab or a prostitute right next door making money in dishonest and disgusting ways that put the safety of people around them in danger.
I applaud the city in their efforts to help clean up the streets and the motels that line them. I think we would all find a warmer, fuzzier feeling in our stomachs about it if we could know what will happen next. How about instead of tossing these "professionals" and junkies in jail and then back on the street, we try to rehabilitate them. Get them jobs, put them in programs to detox them, and help them find their way to a better life. Some people will do well in a program like that, some wont.....but at least we can say we tried everything before we turn our backs on them.

REAL Men In Training
This little entrepreneur is 7 years old, it is his 2nd year in business. He gets to keep all the money for his sales to buy the things he wants, but most of his money he saves. Although, he doesn't open his market stand early in the season his veggies are top grade. As you can see by his sign his garden is grown with Love and Chicken Poop, it doesn't get anymore organic than that, does it? His prices are fair to boot. He admits he does not grow this garden alone, he is supervised by his grandparents. He does rake, plant, weed and water so they allow him to sell what he can. The majority of his crops end up canned or in the freezer, Grandma lets him sell the rest. He goes down to his stand periodically throughout the day, his sales are usually done on the honor system so he can take time out to do the things little boys like to do. Today he has fresh slicing tomatoes, Plum tomatoes for $1.00 a bag and Pink Lemonade, ice cold for 25 cents. If you happen to be traveling along Brick Kiln Road stop by and check the little fella out.

The government of RIYADH, Saudi Arabia has passed two new laws this week
No walking of dogs in the City Parks, and No Sales of Dogs.
These two laws were passed in an attempt to curb what Saudis see as a serious compromise to the moral fabric of their society.
It seems that officials believe that during the time that one takes to walk a dog in RIYADH park is time used to pick up women!
The dog walking law was passed on Monday, and apparently thinking toward the future; today they decided to make it illegal for pet stores to sell dogs. Thus insuring that at some point after all the dogs in RIYADH have died, there will no longer be an issue.

National Night Out In Fruitland
On August 5, 2008, the Fruitland Police Department will be sponsoring it annual “National Night Out” celebration with a block party at the Fruitland Little League complex.
This annual event is designed to heighten community awareness of crime prevention programs and their impact on crime, drug and violence reduction in all communities. Additionally, this event strengthens communication and cooperation among community members and the police which encourages partnership and neighborhood spirit.
The block party in Fruitland will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Activities will include water slides, games, children’s events and much more. Music and demonstrations will be held to include K-9 presentation by Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, martial arts, etc.
Free food and desserts will be served.
All residents are invited to attend this wonderful event in Fruitland.

Hip Hoppers Chris Brown & Rhyianna In Ocean City Maryland
Last Saturday 7-26-08 we were fishing at the Oceanic pier in OC when there were a crowd of people getting on jet skis. Someone told us it was Hip Hoppers Chris Brown and Rhyianna and everyone starting taking Pictures. One of the Body Guards had a young kid with a pro camera escorted off the pier. When they returned from jet skiing my wife went to take more pictures from the city sidewalk and was told by one of the Body Guards that she could not take pics, she cited the photographers bill of rights which we both carry in our camera cases he got real nasty and made hand gestures which seemed to us like he was going to shoot her, what do you think?

HELLO, I guess so when it sinks two or three times a year because no one will keep it up. Sounds to me they were wasting $3,000.00 a year for work that wasn't done. He then stressed how big our Port is and they need new one to help boats in distress. Louise then asked how many calls had our current boat went on, he said ONE last year to help a boat in Fruitland in distress. He then said Salisbury and the Salisbury Zoo were at Tawes Crab Feast to let people know we exist and that we had a Zoo. He then said there were actually people who didn't know we had a Zoo. HELLO! Get a Booth for just the City and put a big sign in the back that shows a picture of the Salisbury Zoo. After all, I thought the Zoo was the pride of Salisbury?

Mikulski, Cardin Announce More Than $150,000 For Easton Volunteer Fire Department
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Benjamin L. Cardin (both D-Md.) today announced the Easton Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) in Talbot County has been awarded $155,838 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP). Senator Mikulski is on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the AFGP and fights each year to increase its federal funding. Senator Cardin is a member of the Budget Committee, which each year sets priorities for funding to federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security.
“I know how important this funding is to Maryland communities – often it’s the difference between life and death. First responders protect our homes and communities, and the federal government has a responsibility to protect them by providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs safer and smarter,” said Senator Mikulski. “Every day when our first responders report for duty, they don’t know what they will face. That’s why I fight every year for the equipment, training, and staffing our protectors and communities deserve.”
“First responders have always been on the front lines, keeping our families and our neighborhoods safe from harm. I thank these brave men and women for their continuing service and sense of duty to our community,” said Senator Cardin. “I am proud to support federal investment through local grants like this, which is essential to ensure our community heroes have the equipment and training they need to do their jobs safely and efficiently.”

Last night the Neighborhood Code & Compliance Team visited the Chesapeake Inn on Rt. 13 just outside the inner City area and did a Life Safety Check on ALL of the rooms in that Motel.
Tom Stevenson did visit the Motel the day before and warned the Owner/Manager that they would be coming by to inspect, so this was not a raid at all. I was there from the very beginning and it was handled with first class.
There was one room with one bed set up for one person that had 7 people in it. Another room for one had 5 people in it and one other room I witnessed had two beds and 5 people occupying the room. I believe there were 11 rooms in all in violation.
Chief Bryan Records was there from the SFD and from what I could tell, all of the smoke detectors were working fine but he did see violations. One room had hot plates in the room, (3 of them, I believe) and this is just not safe. They had chicken in the sink and so forth, so it just wasn't healthy.
The point of these investigations are to make sure these Hotel/Motel operations are running as they should be. Rather then throwing people out on the streets and considering how late it was at night, people had already settled in for the evening and Mr. Stevenson was very kind to leave things as they were for the night but tomorrow there's absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS!
The inspection started at 10:00 Pm and went to about 11:15 PM. The Salisbury Police Department had their own Team of Officers, one of which spoke 4 languages. So there was no getting away with any slang talk for this guy!
I personally think this is an excellent thing to do and although Tom's Office is so short handed, my hat is tipped for his over time as well as Susan Phillips, another class act. I should add, there wasn't a single situation there this evening. Everyone was cool, calm and collective. Quite honestly, if I had someone knocking at my door wanting to inspect my room, I wouldn't be too happy about it at all.
That clearly goes to show you how kind and cooperative everyone was. It should also be noted that each and every room was told, if they didn't want anyone coming into their room and or participate with these inspections, they didn't have to at all. Hopefully that gives you a clear idea just how well it was handled.
So Tom, Susan, Bryan and the group of SPD Officers there, nice work, seriously!

A call went out for a possible pedestrian struck at Centre Road and 13 North. No pedestrian was found there, but the kicker was as the picture shows, they sent a ladder truck to a pedestrian getting struck call! What did they think he was on light pole...ridiculous!

The Salisbury Kennel Club is only weeks away from their Grand Opening at Winterplace Park. The Kennel Club reveived a proclamation HERE on July 14th, 2008. The County Council will be presenting the Salisbury MD Kennel Club with a proclamation making 20 Sept 2008 Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Wicomico County.

I found an email from one of SbyNews readers today forwarding me a quote from H.L. Mencken. He stated that he thought I would enjoy it, and I did.
Mencken was known as the "American Nietzsche" and the 'Sage of Baltimore' .

Salvage Grocery Stores?
With the costs of everything that we need on a daily basis skyrocketing, many people are turning to alternative sources for all of their needs. Today I found an article about the growing popularity of 'Salvage Grocery Stores'.

My husband and I are regular customers at Lankford Sysco Cash and Carry, where there is a section for damaged cases of food or today's date meat is sold at a discount. We have shopped there for years and I prefer it over the larger chain stores as we know the names of all of the employees in the store and the food is top quality. Actually, I think that their 'retail' prices are lower than the chains, plus it's nice to go where everybody knows your name .
I have a friend who shops at a place in DE on 13 next to the 13 Market called Lou's. She is always bragging about the things that she has purchased there and pennies that she paid for them. Unfortunately, every time I have been there something has just died and I can't get past the smell.

An Oldie But A Goodie
A young woman in Wildwood, New Jersey was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the Atlantic Ocean. She went down to Morey's Pier and was about to leap into the frigid water when a handsome young sailor saw her tottering on the edge of the pier, crying.

Legal Or Not Legal?
If Maryland residents aren't supposed to be allowed to buy cigarettes in Delaware, should Delaware residents be allowed to buy gas in Maryland? I mean, Georgetown is a good 40 miles away from this Gas Station. At least they knew better than to head over to a Gordy Mart.
If these guys were in fact there to buy fuel, my hat is tipped to them. It's all about fiscal accountability.

My Cat Is A Free Loader
Seriously, my cat is taking advantage of me. I had to pay a special visit to Petco earlier today for more cat food. Petco's honest slogan should be "It's where your money goes." I'm more than a little ticked off that my cat expects me to provide her with cat food that costs $10.49 (before taxes) per 3.5 lb bag. She turns her nose to any cheap stuff I've ever brought home and she sees right through my lies. "Oh the store was out of your regular brand, but the clerk there told me that Brand X is actually the SAME food as your regular brand." Yes, I lied to my cat, and she saw right through the BS. That coupled with the vet's recommendation that the expensive stuff is better for the cat has convinced my wife that we (I) should only buy the special food. I tried to convince both my wife and my cat that the cat doesn't have very refined taste buds. I mean, she eats flies. She licks her ass in lieu of toilet paper. That and she contributes nothing financially to the house (the cat, not my wife). And, she's a friggin' cat; she shouldn't get a household vote.
The cat's now reading over my shoulder... one second please. I think she suspects something.
Okay, so the cat also doesn't seem to care about anything I'm doing. I'll be reading the paper, and she'll plop her cat's ass dead center of the page and look at me as if I've gotten in her way. Or maybe I'm stealing a few moments of silence in the bathroom when all of a sudden there's a furry arm being jammed under the door. Are you kidding me? Give me a minute. You don't even shit in here anyway. Next time you do that I'm going to duct tape your little arm to the linoleum. Maybe you'd let me crap in peace then.
Damnit, she's back. Shhh. She just had to remind me that she's shedding and that I should brush her.
Okay where was I... flies, ass licking, duct taping, brushing, bathroom door banging... Oh yeah, so this cat eats better than I do. I'm too lazy to do the math, but I'd guess that the food I just put in her dish cost more than my lunch today. My lunch didn't even come with gravy, but it was chicken flavored. Discussing my eating habits are for another time though.
Oh jeez... she's staring at me now. Not really at me, but past me at the window behind me. I just know she wants me to think there's something or someone outside the window, but I'm not going to play that game. I will win this grudge match. I'm going to stare back at her 'til she blinks. Apparently that's supposed to be a sign of my dominance. She doesn't play fairly though, because her eyes just got wide and she did a little crouch thing. Maybe there IS someone outside the window behind me. NO, don't think that. She's bluffing. Blink, you damn cat. Ha, she looked away. I win, I win, I win. Play it cool, no need to gloat.
Okay, now that I think about it, I believe my cat is a bully as well. She just fucks with me every chance she gets. This cat must get off knowing that I'm her personal servant and she can throw up on the carpeting or piss over the side of her litter box and I'll have to clean it up. Perhaps it's retribution for cutting her claws off or having her ovaries removed. Whatever it is, I'm no longer a cat owner. I'm the one who's owned.
People used to believe that cats caused insanity. I think they may have been on to something.

Will Verizon Go On Strike?
Negotiations are under way with Verizon and the CWA, Communication Workers of America) to strike a retirement deal before Midnight on Saturday or the Verizon Staff will go on strike. That means there will be around 17 people handling the jobs of 200. So if you want something done you had better do so before Saturday evening!
It also means if you want to upgrade or downgrade your phone system during that time, GOOD LUCK!
Once again, news and information you're NOT seeing on the 6:00 News and or the Daily Times. You've got to get up pretty early in the morning to keep up with Salisbury News!
CWA/IBEW VERIZON/VCSI BARGAINING UPDATE #34: 7-29-08
The Unions and the Company met today and the Unions presented counter proposals in response to their proposals presented yesterday. The meeting recessed while the Company prepares a response. We are entering the final hours and still are very far apart on reaching an agreement. This round of bargaining has had fewer issues on the table than any other in memory, but it has more major issues on the table than any before.
We are negotiating for the future of our members. We are resisting cost shifting on a healthcare plan that is expected to cost $30,000 per year for a family in 2011.
We are fighting for our retiree healthcare in a world that has almost abandoned retiree healthcare.
We are fighting for employment security.
We are fighting for new jobs in Verizon while the Company is staunchly against the expansion of Union jobs.
We are fighting for work jurisdiction while the Company is determined to subcontract.
These are the issues that are on the table and the issues that secure our futures. They are worth fighting for. We are fighting for these things at the bargaining table and we may soon be taking the fight to the street. Everyone should be ready.
Locals are advised to communicate with retirees. Some retirees are being contacted by the Company and are asked to work in the event of a strike. We need them to understand that they cannot possibly earn enough money to pay for the health care premiums the Company is demanding at the table. The bottom line is that if retirees help the Company kill retiree healthcare they will have worked for free.
Once more we caution our members not to pay attention to rumors. Your supervisor, manager, or director has no information about bargaining whatsoever. Our bargaining reports are accurate and timely and the only reliable source of information. We believe that a completely informed membership is our best weapon.
