Resume:  The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a one vehicle fatal motor vehicle crash in which two people were killed that occurred this afternoon in Bear.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. this afternoon as a 17 year old male from Bear, DE was operating a 1996 Mitsubishi 3000G and was traveling in the middle lane of northbound DE Rt. 1 at an apparent high rate of speed. As the operator attempted to make a right hand lane change in order to avoid a slower moving vehicle in front of him, he lost control of the Mitsubishi which began to rotate in a clockwise direction. The vehicle traveled off of the east edge of the road and struck a metal guardrail. The vehicle continued through the guardrail and overturned onto its roof where it came to rest partially on top of the guardrail. The operator, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16 year old female passenger from Newark, DE, was also pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. DE Rt. 1 northbound was closed for approximately 3.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

The names of victims involved in this crash will be released at a later time.

Editors Notes: I had heard about this accident last night as a friend was traveling in that direction and was delayed because of it. Very sad.

If you're going to race, go to the track. I know it seems cool to gas it on the streets, but you put not only yourself, but others in danger. 2 kids just lost their lives, senselessly.

I am always saddened to hear about anyone losing their lives in a car accident, but particularly young teens. They had their whole life ahead of them and I can't imagine the pain their parents and family must be feeling. I know the pain their friends are feeling from losing my best friend in a car accident. It is devastating. So sad. They are all in my thoughts and prayers.
