Reject Birthright Citizenship

An editorial published in USA Today this morning defends the practice of Birthright Citizenship which gives automatic citizenship to any child born in the United States even if the parents are not U.S. citizens. NumbersUSA President Roy Beck was given the opportunity to respond in a commentary printed alongside the editorial.

Here is what ran in USA Today on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010:

OPPOSING VIEW ON 'ANCHOR BABIES': REJECT BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

By Roy Beck

Birthright citizenship is a powerful anchor for keeping illegal workers in a country — and for keeping the jobs they fill out of reach of unemployed legal residents. It is incompatible with a modern age of easy transportation and organized people smuggling. Every developed nation in the world, — except the USA and Canada, — has rejected citizenship for births to tourists and unlawful foreign residents.

An estimated 4 million current U.S. residents have received this type of citizenship. Who’s hurt by this? Millions of poor American children live in families suffering from unemployment or depressed wages because an estimated 7 million illegal foreign workers are holding construction, manufacturing, service and transportation jobs.

Joe, in some states it's even worse. I watched two senators on the news last week from Rhode Island (one republican and one democrat) who were on their way to Arizona to discuss the legal points with Gov. Brewer in an attempt to adopt some of the language to take it back to Rhode Island. They have something in Rhode Island called "Anchor Fetuses". Thats right! If a foriegn national comes here illegally and is pregnant the state of Rhode Island will give them $450.00 per month to help support the illegal pregnant mom. But that money isn't supposed to be spent on food - oh no! Because they will receive another $250.00 for food. A total of $700.00 will be given to illegal immigrants who were already pregnant when they came here - paid for by the tax payers of Rhode Island.

So let me get this straight:

Politicians would rather spend billions on fences and even more billions on detaining and deporting illegals, and start modifying the constitution rather than going directly after the people hiring illegals in the first place?

11:47 - you are right on point - take away the jobs, and take care of the problem. If those who are hiring illegals are aggressively persued and forced to conform to hiring standards, much of this problem is solved. Unfortunately, those large employers who are doing this are quite well connected to lobbying groups who insure that loopholes are left to jumpt through. If we could only get our legislators to do what was right as opposed to what would line their pockets, we would be in much better shape.

3:41 check the comments from 4 posts up. You won't get such a politician because dummies on both sides of the aisle only want to hear partisan mudslinging and fall for every half-truth and scare tactic. They run from any objective analysis. Why? It just might show them how wrong they are on some issues.
