A major winter storm will pummel the mid-Atlantic with paralyzing snow through the first half of the weekend. Major airport cancellations are expected to occur on top of extremely hazardous travel on the ground.
The brunt of the snow will be delivered to the mid-Atlantic tonight into Saturday as a major storm intensifies and moves up the Eastern Seaboard.
From 1-2 feet of snow will thump over portions of extreme southern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, northern and western Virginia, West Virginia and southeastern Ohio. In fact, snow totals will match or exceed snowfall from the December blizzard.
Snow rates could easily reach 3 inches an hour during the height of the storm, making it hard for people shoveling or clearing roads to keep up.
Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Atlantic City are among cities that will be in the heart of the major snowstorm with the potential for white-out conditions and travel-halting snow.
Damage and Power Outages:
On the southern edge of the storm, wet snow and ice can down trees and cut power across parts of southeastern Virginia and the lower Delmarva Peninsula. Increasing winds with the storm will add extra stress to trees and power lines in these areas.
It looks like much of Delmarva will be spared from the heaviest snowfall, but the possibility of icing and the stiff winds could still make for a rough time in some areas.
Any way you look at it, we have some significant weather ahead.
