Letters To The Editor Are Just Rolling In This Morning

Citizens left to become victims once again!

Editor,

Words cannot express the disappointment I felt this morning when I learned that our lawmakers in Annapolis struck down HB 470. HB 470 would have repealed the requirement that the Superintendant of the Maryland State Police determine that just cause exists warranting the issuance of a permit to carry a concealed firearm for self defense to law abiding citizens. The examples of armed citizens across the country saving their own lives and the lives of others from the acts of criminals are so numerous that they cannot be listed here. 40 States across this nation have enacted legislation repealing the criminalization of carrying a concealed firearm for self defense, yet lawmakers in the State of Maryland have decided to leave in place the existing legislation which makes it virtually impossible for the average law abiding citizen to obtain such a permit. This leaves our citizenry without adequate means to defend themselves and their families. This, in and of itself, is criminal. This is just another shining example of the fact that we need to clean house in the next election.

I recently had conversation with Sheriff Mike Lewis on this very matter. He expressed to me in no uncertain terms that he absolutely supports the right of each and every law abiding citizen to carry a concealed firearm. He further stated that he openly denounces any legislation or other act of the government that would infringe upon the citizen's Second Amendment Rights and will, in fact, resign his position as Sheriff before he would permit his Sheriff's Office to become a tool to disarm "We The People" or take away their ammunition. Now THAT is an elected official I can support! The fact that he spoke about it openly, candidly, and welcomed the MSM to question him on it is a testament to his total commitment to public safety.

During the next campaign by our state legislators we should band together and let them know in no uncertain terms that our right to protect ourselves in an increasingly violent world is paramount. Remember - "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall NOT be infringed". How this blatant violation of our constitution got by the SCOTUS is beyond reasonable comprehension.

I can see both sides to this bill...Yes we do have a right to bare arms and should not be denied that, but simply allowing any "law abiding citizen" to carry a concealed firearm is a little scary! Some "law abiding citizens" are simply idiots and shouldn't even own a gun, some have mental issues and aren't stable enough carry a weapon, some simply haven't been caught yet... To me, I'm not really willing to take this chance and legally put firearms on these people. Sure, there are some responsible people that should be allowed to carry a concealed firearm, but it is certainly not for everyone-think about it a little deeper.

Now for those people who truely deserve to carry a concealed weapon, there needs to be a certain level of scrutiny that they need to go through to obtain the proper permits. They can't just simply hand these things out to just anybody with a clean record. Permit holders should display proper firearm safety-not just the BS 20 minute video they do now to get your firearm safety card that's needed to purchase a pistol. I took mine at Dave's Sport Shop 3 years ago and never had to even shoot a gun, clear and clean a gun, or take a test. Permit holders should also go through some sort of mental evaluation-I know some crazies out there that should never even touch a gun. Extensive background checks and known assailents need to be reviewed so that we aren't arming our criminals and drug dealers that just haven't been caught yet.

I think that all of you will agree on that one.

I just learned recently that Md State Police require a 30 day wait between the receipt of each hand gun purchased. I purchased three at an auction in January, and it will be close to, if not sometime in June before I receive the last one. This latest action by the legislature is the continuing example of our Second Amendment Rights being eroded. I am in agreement that we must band together in one voice.
In addition, for those of us not members of the National Rifle Assn., should take the initiative and invest $30.00 to join. This organization, along with our citizen involvement will provide a strong voice. There are over eighty million gun owners in our country, but only four million are members. Charlton Heston once said, that when the membership of six million was reached, the NRA would have sufficient money, membership and influence to encourage our politicians to take pro Second Amendment actions on behalf of the people.
I am ready to assist in an NRA membership drive.

Dave C, your argument could be made about people that drive cars. More people are killed by stupid drivers then guns. Are we going to make it almost imposible for idiots to get drivers license? I don't think so. As a matter of fact Maryland wants illegals and thoes who cannot even read and write to have license. I know I'd feel much safer if everyone was required to carry a gun, even the criminals because they carry them anyway.

If a criminal owned a registered gun it would be a little easier to catch him when he slips up. Criminals already carry, and law-abiding citizens have to jump thru hoops, is that they way it should be? Sounds wrong to me. ANYmouse

Trust me, I feel the same about stupid drivers too!

Everybody should be able to carry unless they have been tried and convicted of a violent crime. If everyone on the planes on 9/11 had guns (even the terrorists) the disaster we experienced never would have happened.

Is the voting rolls for this made public so we can find out which politician voted against the 2nd amendment and our right to protect ourselves from the thugs that are out there?

I know I would certainly feel safer making deposits for my business if I could carry my gun. As it is, I go out of my way on weekends to make the drops during the day, and even then, I'm looking over my shoulder when I do it.

It is up to our Sheriff (and sheriffs across the Country) to protect our rights as citizens. Please don't let these Globalists take away our freedoms and rights.
