Fernando Guerrero Heads Back Into The Ring & The Classroom

This is Fernando's first fight in the pros against another South paw like himself. It poses some new challenges and will serve as a good test to see how he handles a southpaw. Orso has ko'd 3 of his for opponents so with a 75% KO ratio on his wins, he is expected to bring some punching power into the ring.

On Friday Fernando and his Manager/Trainer Hal Chernoff spent the morning at East Salisbury School for career day. Along with others they spoke about the career's they have chosen and what it has taken to get this far as well as what it will take to continue the climb. Fernando spoke on subjects that ranged from proper training and making sacrifices as well as suggestions of proper dress and conduct outside the ring. All of the classes were listened intently and had many questions when he finishes. "It was a lot of fun, I go back to my old school a lot because I mentor a student there that boxes in the gym, but being able to speak to all the classes and the idea that maybe one of these kids may take what I say and use it to bear down in school and in what ever else they are interested in really inspires me to want to do more of this"

In June Fernando and Hal have been asked to speak at Parkside during their "dress for success day" I hope they are as receptive as the kids at East Salisbury. "Now all I have to do is get my Coach to start dressing better" he said with a laugh. Chernoff added" I could dress like a bum because those kids don't even see me, their eyes are fixed on Fernando. I just enjoy watching."

TWO YEARS AGO TODAY

It was two years ago today when this Blog really started to be recognized. I chose to cover an event in Seaford Delaware where two local Soldiers had died in Iraq, (Corey Palmer and Rick James) and if you'll recall, (those 25 or 50 loyal visitors back then) those nut jobs from Texas came in to protest the Funeral.

I had this gut feeling something was going to happen and while the MSM went to the Church to cover the funeral, I stayed behind. I just knew something was going to bust loose. Needless to say a riot broke out and I was smack dab in the middle of it with objects flying just over my head and Police Officers doing their best to break things up.

Boy, those were the days! Now I get to go to Council Meetings and deal with their BS! May these two men rest in peace and with any successful prayers the Families have found peace as well?

Hillary Tilghman Wants Your Money

Like her idol, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman is a flip-flopper of the first magnitude. Raising taxes, mismanaging the taxpayers' money, telling whoppers to the public (and the press) is all in a days work for the illustrious Queen of Barrieland. Now Tilghman wants to mimic the likes of Hillary and Sen. John Kerry.

Before she was FOR a plan that would INCREASE water and sewer rates by 72% over the next five years, she was against it. Just as Clinton voted for the war before she opposed it and Kerry opposed the war before he voted for it, Tilghman was AGAINST an increase in the city's water and sewer rates. Of course this was AFTER she was FOR a 10% increase last year (despite what she told the Daily Times).

If you are becoming confused, don't feel bad. This is precisely what Tilghman wants.

Tilghman hoped to force the council to come up with this on their own, but since the only two members of council with a backbone don't carry water for Tilghman, that was a bust. Now Tilghman is placed in the position of asking for a HUGE rate increase. If we use Bill Duvall's figure of an average annual water and sewer bill of $962.00, the average ratepayer will see their cost rise to $1,665 in FY 2013! (see the attached table for a full explanation). Over a five year period this amounts to a 72% increase over the current rates! (Note that others writing about this issue neglect to add in the final 3% in year 5)

Is such an increase necessary? That remains open to debate. What is not debatable are two ponts:

Some rate increase will be necessary. and ...

The Cause -
a complete lack of planning on the part of the Tilghman administration coupled with a seemingly insane desire to subsidize residential developers through the thoroughly discredited Tilghman / Comegys / Dunn Growth Pays for Growth "strategy".

City Finance Director Pam Oland claims that "part of the increase had nothing to do with growth". This is probably true. Of course she fails to discuss how much of the increase IS related to growth and why the developers are not paying that portion of the cost.

Solutions exist for, at least, portions of this problem. Unfortunately for the taxpayers (and ratepayers) of Salisbury they will not be adopted by this council. Cutting wasteful spending is not amenable to the likes of Louise Smith, Gary Comegys or Shanie Shields. In a land governed by a fascist queen and administered using the peculiar (and disreputable) laws of Bubbanomics we are lead to believe that enlarging the city's bureaucracy somehow contributes to economic growth.

Voters do have an option available to them; but it cannot be exercised until next year.

Excellent point! This is exactly why the intelligent Council Members are questioning her motives. This is nothing new to the Mayor and why was it produced LONG AFTER her proposed Budget? Any taxpayer falling for her load of crap is, well, just as dumb as she wants you to be.

Salisbury News Helps Women In Newport, Virginia

Jermaine S. Wright was featured HERE in this earlier article on Salisbury News. Today I received a call from a woman in Newport Virginia asking about more information on this man as they had become aware that he was now located in their area. Long Live The Blogs! Part of the details from that article said, "In 1992 he raped and killed a girl at one of the under 21 clubs in Ocean City. The dna evidence somehow became compromised so they had to let him go."

This woman is in the Real Estate business and wanted to make sure this information was circulated to ALL Real Estate Agents throughout the area.

Herb McMillan New President MD Taxpayers Assoc

The Board of Directors of the Maryland Taxpayers Association announced today the election of Herb McMillan as president of the non-profit , all volunteer, non-partisan organization. MTA supports limited government and low taxes and is Maryland sponsor of the “No New Taxes” pledge, which members of both political parties have signed (see www.mdtaxes.org ).

Also Dee Hodges, previously the President since 2001, moved to Chairman.

McMillan is an American Airlines pilot holding the rank of Captain. He is also a former General Assembly delegate from Anne Arundel County (2002-2006) and headed the Taxpayer Protection Caucus in the House of Delegates. Previous to service on the state level, he served on the Annapolis City Council. He is a 1980 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Hodges is a retired banker from Baltimore County and originally from Montgomery County. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois and holds a M.S. Finance from the University of Baltimore.

“McMillan will be able to call on his experiences to add a new dimension to MTA,” said Hodges.

Barrie's Latest Scam

We may not be witnessing Barrie Tilghman’s last scam as mayor, but it could be the final whopper. And it is that, her role model (Hillary Clinton) could be proud of the maneuver that began a month ago when Barrie presented her proposed budget that had no increase in the sewer or water rates. Predictably, the mainstream media reacted like well trained seals to sardines.

But then sharper eyes saw her statement in the “budget message” that she wanted to collaborate with the Council on the rates before the budget was adopted. And word began leaking that the administration would be asking for a big rate increase.

Smoke became fire on May 8, when the Council held its scheduled work session to discuss the sewer and water budget. Barrie must have been otherwise engaged if not indisposed – she did not attend the work session. But the head of the Public Works Department, Jim Caldwell, and Doreen Turner of that Department discussed various “scenarios” based on the financial forecasting model that Ms. Turner has developed. Under each of them there would be a sizeable rate increase. Under the scenario that Mr. Caldwell recommended, about it would be 50% over the next few years, beginning as soon as possible.

Faced with a conflicted administration two members of the Council (Ms. Campbell and Ms. Cohen) proposed that they should ask the Mayor to discuss her proposal of no increase in rates in light of the financial forecast scenarios, but Mr. Comegys and Ms. Smith opposed doing so. But that was not the outcome – apparently the mayor decided to address the situation with the Council, and that meeting has occurred on May 20.

And we now have a brand new budget proposed by Barrie Tilghman just before the public hearing on the budget that has been scheduled late in the process, leaving no meaningful opportunity for the public to consider the situation or plan to attend and speak at the hearing.

I received this from a family member who, oddly enough, is totally opposed to the war in Iraq. I haven't been able to find anything about this on "Snopes", so I can't confirm it's origin or legitimacy. I do, however, find it interesting. A very long read......but it was worth it to me.

They killed hundreds of thousands of their people. Know why? They were fighting for control of the Middle East and that enormous oil supply.At that time, they were preoccupied with their internal problems and could care less about toppling the west. Oil prices were fairly stable and we could not see an immediate threat.Well, the worst part of what we have ;done as a nation in Iraq is to do away with the military capability of one of those nations. It is not the price of oil we will have to worry about. Oil WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE to this country at any price.. The economy in this country will totally die if that Middle East supply is cut off right now. It will not be a recession. It will be a depression that will make 1929 look like the 'good-old-days'. To win wars, you must put boots on the ground. When you put boots on the ground, soldiers are going to die. Riley Clark is my childhood best friend, I have known him my whole life and I am the first to say what he did was wrong... but you people should also be ashamed of yourselves for putting up his address... I can not vouch for the other kid but riley has never done anything like this in his life. He has been going through a hard time recently and got drunk and did something incredibly stupid. But he's a kid, and he made a mistake... so please give him a break... and don't insult his parents, they are the ones who are suffering the most in this situation.

O M G! You just answered my question when it comes to stupidity! His parents are suffering more than anyone else? Try the property owners, (16 OF THEM) who are suffering! Try the young couple with young children explaining to their little ones why there's an 8 foot long 4x4 lying on the floor and yelling at your children to stay OFF the broken glass! Try explaining to your BOSS that you can't be at work today because some a$$hole slashed all the tires on your car!

Why Would the Daily Times Cover-up for Barrie Tilghman

Yesterday, we ran a post about a blatant lie told by Salisbury Mayor Barrie Parsons Tilghman. Today, the Daily Times has again made itself complicit in the shenanigans of the Tilghman administration by attempting to cover up the same lie.

On page B1 of the Daily Times we find the following correction:

Salisbury Mayor Barrie Parsons Tilghman supported a 10 percent water increase last year. A story in Monday's Daily Times incorrectly stated her position.

We now find the Daily Times deliberately complicit in Tilghman's lie. I spoke with reporter Laura D'Alessandro before writing yesterday's post. On at least three separate occasions during our conversation I asked if she quoted Tilghman correctly. To refresh everyone's memory, Tilghman is quoted:

Tilghman said she did not recommend a water and sewer rate increase last year because citizens were already experiencing a double-digit tax hike -- 12 percent.

After being pressed on the issue, by myself and others, the management of the Daily Times admitted that Tilghman's statement was false. The stance of their management now appears to be that D'Alessandro misquoted Tilghman. Unfortunately, scrutiny does not bear this out.

As previously noted D'Alessandro was adamant that she quoted Tilghman correctly. D'Alessandro also made the same representation to Salisbury Councilwoman Terry Cohen (adding that City Administrator John Pick had also made similar statements). Why then would the Daily Times want to lead readers to believe:

1. Tilghman did not call for a rate hike last year (on Monday)?
2. when caught, try to cover-up the Mayor's false statement by laying blame on D'Alessandro (Tuesday)?

The logical conclusion is that the management of the Daily Times would rather compound an error by cover-up than to clearly state that Tilghman's original statement was false.

As this year's heated budget debate continues, and the fiscal health of Salisbury circles the drain, we can wait with great anticipation to see what additional lengths the local Gannett arm will go to in order to protect the Queen of Barrieland.

The Oldest Living Salisbury Resident

I was recently told something I found very interesting. The gentleman on the left of the photo above is none other than Mr. George Chevalier, the oldest living resident of the City of Salisbury.

Now I have known this Gentleman for a few years now and have found him to be one of the kindest men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and knowing. Of course he'd be considered one of the "Dirty Dozen" by the current administration but to me he's by far the most knowledgeable historians Salisbury has. I just thought I'd share this with all of you.

Oh, and Mr. Holland sitting to his right, he too is one of the "Dirty Dozen" and another one of the finest examples of a human being on this earth.

Nevertheless, in 2006, seat belts saved some 15,383 lives. An additional 5,441 lives could have been saved if seat belts had been worn at the time of the crash. Like them or not, it's about saving lives and educating children how to properly use seat belts and or the habit of actually using them all together.

Yesterday the Shorebirds put together one heck of a successful game by welcoming the "Click it or Ticket" program to their Stadium and more than 5,000 students got to meet Police Officers from all over the State.

Location: 32000 Block of Johnson Road, Salisbury, MD
Suspects: Johnnie Henry Spence Sr., 63, Salisbury, MD

Narrative: On 19 May 2008, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence of Johnnie Spence on Johnson Road to serve an arrest warrant on Spence. The deputy was let into the residence and confirmed Spence’s identity. When the deputy went to place Spence under arrest and attempted to place him in handcuff’s, Spence threatened to kill the deputy and became extremely uncooperative. Spence repeatedly pulled away from the deputy and attempted to prevent his arrest by struggling against the deputy. Additional units arrived and Spence was taken into custody.

Spence was transported to the Central Booking Unit at the Wicomico County Detention Center where Spence was processed and charged with resisting arrest. Additionally, deputies served the arrest warrant on Spence that initially took the deputies to his residence. That warrant consisted of charges related to a Hit and Run accident that occurred back in December 2007. Spence was taken in front of the District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance and Spence was released on Personal Recognizance.

Incident: Assault
Date of Incident: 19 May 2008
Location: 7100 Block of Wainwright Avenue, Parsonsburg, MD
Suspects: Edward Franklin Sheridan, 50, Parsonsburg, MD

Narrative: On 19 May 2008, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 7100 Block of Wainwright Avenue for a reported assault. Upon arrival, the deputy met with a victim who advised that a male subject she lives with had just assaulted her. The male subject exited the residence and was identified as Edward Franklin Sheridan of the same address as the victim. The victim advised that while she was preparing dinner, Sheridan became angry and pushed the victim into the counter causing lacerations to be inflicted on the victim’s arms. After the deputies heard the accounts of what happened, Edward Sheridan was arrest for the assault.

Sheridan was transported to the Central Booking Unit at the Wicomico County Detention Center where Sheridan was processed and charged with Second Degree Assault. After an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner, Sheridan was held at the Detention Center on $5,000.00 bond.

Daily Times Prints Tilghman Lies

Let's forget for a moment that the only reason Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman didn't request an increase in water and sewer rates again this year is because there is an election in less than 12 months (that applies to a property tax increase as well). Let's forget for a moment that the coverage of the Salisbury FY 2009 budget, by the Daily Times, has consisted of little more taking dictation from Tilghman and her cronies. This morning our local paper crossed a big line, printing total falsehoods from Tilghman and treating them as if they were gospel. If that isn't bad enough, Ms. D'Alessandro believes that she did nothing wrong.

This morning the Daily Times printed another piece from Tilghman press secretary (and nominal reporter) Laura D'Alessandro regarding a possible increase in water and sewer rates. Quoting Tilghman:

Tilghman said she did not recommend a water and sewer rate increase last year because citizens were already experiencing a double-digit tax hike -- 12 percent.

The fact that Tilghman ASKED for a 17% property tax increase (not 12%) can be chalked up to a mis-statement or bad math. However, there is no question that Tilghman requested a 10% increase in water and sewer rates last year. One need merely look at last year's budget message, or look it up in Daily Times own archives. The paper mentioned the proposed rate hike (which was defeated only because Councilwoman Debbie Campbell embarrassed the administration and Tilghman's lackeys on council regarding the size of the Water and Sewer Fund surplus) several times.

According to Ms. D'Alessandro, it is not her responsibility to check up on statements from Tilghman (or her cronies) provided that she quotes them:

"I'm quoting her (Tilghman). If she lied then it's her responsibility."

When pressed on the subject, her initial arrogance gave way to whining that "she was new to her job". If Ms. D'Alessandro doesn't have enough common sense to meet any quote from a politician with a certain amount of scepticism then she needs to cover another beat.

D'Alessandro actually believes that the Mayor or her minions have never lied to her until now. While I can't prove the negative, probability leads me to believe that she has.

Let's be honest! Tilghman hopes that she can pass the buck and somehow make her arch-nemesis Debbie Campbell look bad while she sits back and watches the fiscal state of Salisbury collapse upon itself. This is probably a sound political strategy IF she is not planning on running and is merely shilling for her heir apparent, Councilman Gary Comegys.

The bottom line is that our local paper need no longer be the town crier for Barrie Tilghman.

Correction To The Correction On Mayor's Quote

The reporter at the Daily Times responded to my submission of a correction to the Water/Sewer Fund article this morning (see post below) concerning the quote by Mayor Tilghman.

According to the reporter, Laura D'Alessandro, she did not make a mistake in attribution, that Mayor Tilghman made statements concerning last year's water rate increase as printed in the paper today. The reporter added that city administrator John Pick made similar statements.

I thanked Ms. D'Alessandro for correcting my error. I also let her know that the mayor's FY08 proposed budget and the official record show the mayor did, indeed, support a 10% water rate increase. I shared with her the sequence of events last summer, including the rescinding of the hike passed by the council majority, as described in the post below.

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Salisbury Police Department is requesting that the witness that reported the assault on Mitchell Rd. to the Salisbury Police on Saturday night, May 17, make contact with Detectives in reference to this investigation. On May 17, 2008 at approximately 9:06 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police made contact with the below listed suspect in the area of Railroad Avenue and Elizabeth Street. The suspect gave the officers consent to search his person, and as a result of the search, officers were able to recover a smoking device containing suspected crack/cocaine.

ARRESTED: Rodney Elliott Stevenson, 40 years of age Princess Anne, Maryland

Possession of crack/cocaine

On May 17, 2008 at approximately 11:08 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by the below listed suspect for traffic violations. The suspect gave the officers consent to search the vehicle, and as a result of the search, the officers were able to recover a suspected marijuana cigarette, and a quantity of suspected marijuana in a bag.

On May 18, 2008 at approximately 8:50 pm, an off duty Officer of the Salisbury Police observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Cherry St. in Salisbury. The off duty Officer was able to observe the suspect in the vehicle in possession of a suspected marijuana cigarette. On duty Officers responded and made contact with the below listed suspect. The vehicle was checked and a quantity of suspected heroin and suspected heroin paraphernalia was located in addition to the suspected marijuana cigarette.

Possession of heroin

Assault On Sheriff's Deputy

Incident: Assault on a Deputy

Date of Incident: 17 May 2008
Location: 7400 Block Gumboro Road, Pittsville, MD

Suspects: Jeremy O. Goslee, 21, Mardela Springs, MD

Narrative: On 17 May 2008 at 0230hrs, a deputy responded to the parking lot of the Talbot Apartments on Gumboro Road in Pittsville, MD for a reported disturbance. On arrival, the deputy observed a male subject, later identified as Jeremy Goslee, being restrained that was yelling loudly and threatening to kill someone. As the deputy approached Goslee, he broke free and charged at the deputy in an attempt to knock the deputy down. The deputy informed Goslee that he was under arrest for assaulting the deputy but Goslee repeatedly pulled away from the deputy who attempted to handcuff him. In an attempt to subdue Goslee, the deputy utilized his pepper spray to gain control of Goslee. The deputy then wrestled Goslee to the ground and held on to him until backup units arrived.

Goslee was transported to PRMC for treatment of the pepper spray and continued to act disorderly there, screaming threats and obscenities at law enforcement and disturbing the general environment of the hospital emergency room.

After treatment, Goslee was taken to the Central Booking Unit at the Wicomico County Detention Center where Goslee was processed and charged with Assault, Disturbance of the Peace and Disorderly Conduct. After an initial appearance before the District Court Commissioner, Goslee was held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on $12,500 bond.

Incident: Theft

Date of Incident: 22 April 2008

Location: Wicomico County Roads Division, 28440 Owens Branch Road, Salisbury, MD

Suspects:
1. Guy William Broadhurst, 36, Salisbury, MD
2. Jeffrey Lee Bromley, 33, Princess Anne, MD

Narrative: On 22 April 2008, a deputy responded to the Wicomico County Roads Division for the report of a theft of metal from that location. Upon arrival, the deputy was advised that six metal roller, designed specifically for the Wicomico Ferry, had been taken from their storage location along with eight snow plow blades. The total value for the stolen merchandise is over $24,000.00.

The theft suspects were seen leaving the area by County employees after they had loaded a pick-up truck with the metal objects. It was also learned that the theft suspects were captured on the new surveillance system installed at the Wicomico County Roads Division. From the witnesses and the surveillance system, the deputy was able to identify the vehicle. Because of previous contacts with the same individuals in this vehicle, the deputy was able to identify the two theft suspects. Based on the investigation, it was now learned that Guy Broadhurst and Jeffrey Bromley were the two thieves. Deputies located Bromley on 24 April 2008 in the same suspect vehicle used to commit the theft and also discovered that he had a receipt from a scrap yard where the pair had sold the stolen metal. The investigating Deputy went to the scrap yard and discovered they too had a surveillance system that caught the same pair receiving payment for the purloined items.

Bromley was arrested on 24 April 2008 for the theft and taken to the Wicomico County Detention Center where he is being held on $10,000 bond. An arrest warrant has been obtained for Guy Broadhurst but he has not been located as of yet. Broadhurst’s last known address was in Salisbury, MD. Anyone with information as to Broadhurst’s whereabouts is asked to call the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office at 410-548-4890 or Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776.

Sherman was playing cool and went flying around the outfield and couldn't stop in time when he had to dump the 4 Wheeler before he hit the wall. The Shorebirds chose this year to keep the 4 Wheelers away from Sherman. IMO, good move.

The Mayor increased her office budget 120%, but the number of police officers ZERO in 10 years…

The Mayor this year has denied meaningful raises for all personnel -
except three members of her own office.

The City Attorney's budget? Up 97% in 10 years… This year, the mayor's budget raises it by 36%.

Bonded Debt has risen 308% in 10 years…

The proposed 13.5% increase in just bonded debt payments this year alone
($247,728) would pay for three police officers or paramedic firefighters.

Will there be a 25% increase in water/sewer rates this year and 20% increase the next year? We don't know, because the Mayor simply plugged in over $4 million of surplus to balance that fund's budget until council decides.

Instead of the Mayor spending $14,250 on a "Citizen Attitude Survey," we need to tell what we think! Our elected officials owe us responsible spending, effective planning and full accountability!

Katelyn took her first flight yesterday for her 9th birthday. These are just a few pics of Ocean City. As you can tell from her Kool-Aid smile, she had a blast. Our dear friend, Dan Sheppard, owns the plane and was eager to take Katelyn and her brother, Brandon airborne for the first time. Thank you, Dan, for keeping us safe.
