Appearing on “Fox & Friends,” the “Clueless” actress, who is black, said it’s “ludicrous” that celebrities like Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith are boycotting this year’s Oscars ceremony over the nominees’ lack of diversity.
“We have to make up our minds,” she said. “Either we want to have segregation or integration, and if we don’t want segregation, then we have to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black.”
“If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It’s a double standard,” she added. “There shouldn’t be a Black History Month. We’re Americans, period.”
Co-host Steve Doocey asked her to clarify her position: “Are you saying there shouldn’t be a Black History Month because there isn’t a White History Month?” he asked.
“Exactly,” Ms. Dash said.

Watched this segment and she's absolutely right. You can't have it both ways. If you want integration, then BET and the Image Awards should cease. The Academy votes on Oscar recipients based on their ability and talent. There have been Oscars given to black performers, Spike Lee has received one as well. Therefore, it should be based and continue to be based on merit.
One thing Hollywood and screenwriters can do is to provide more quality projects that emulate diversity. However, Hollywood, before the better part of America, embraced black people and gave them prominence when no other industries did. Once again low-informed voters and celebrities point their fingers at the very hand that gave them a hand up when no one else afforded such.
One thing she did say not listed here is, she would rather win an Oscar based on her merit and ability, not because of her skin color.

She's totally right. Kudos to her for having a backbone and speaking her mind. Integration or segregation is the best way to put it that I've yet to hear. The world today is a tough place irregardless of skin color, age, gender or religion.
So glad to hear this from a black woman. A white woman or man would be called all sorts of names if they had tried to say that very same thing.

She is absolutely 100 percent correct. Good for her to stand up for what is right. She is to be admired.
She should be exalted by the black community, however she will be ridiculed and rebuked. The likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett can't stand conservative clear thinking blacks. It is refreshing that their are people like her in the black community with rational and logical opinions. She is not only beautiful on the outside but also beautiful on the inside. I am proud of this tremendous example of the black community.
We need to fulfill the promises that Lincoln made to members of Congress and the Senate, we need to ship them out of America and move them back to Africa. This would solve millions of problems!

I agree with 10:53 this lady is a first class person she recognizes what a lot of us have been saying for years. Everything should be based on merit, if you receive an Oscar is should be based on your acting and the effort you put into your role. If it is access to college, sports, any occupation, and promotions it should come down to the individuals ability. Kudos too to Morgan Freeman he has always been one of my favorite actors and now knowing how he feels on this subject it means even more to me. Let this country stand for what is fair to all your own ability and work ethics.

I can't believe some of the comments I am seeing.. Ship them back to Africa? Like you think that low of another American citizen? And obviously by preface I don't agree with her.. If you study history in an unbiased way.. It's easy to see that blacks have consistently created their own culture (ie rap .. Which I'm sure the back to Africa comment person likes at least one song) communities, schools because they were not afforded the same privlages as "others" in society...there was a significant diff in our black school were funded as opposed to white schools.. But to my point .. When BET first came out..most TV network predominantly aired white programs with a sprinkle of Cosby show , Stanford and son.. Etc. So bet was filing a void in "BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION"
8:25PM, no study of history is strictly unbiased. Every person comes into this study with their own experiences and conditioned reactions/responses.
I will address your post. It's apparent, you did not read my article from last week where I relayed the fact that Lincoln wanted to ship slaves back to Africa. The viewer may have been remembering this article. It has nothing to do with current revelry over the Oscar issue.
As for outlets like BET and the Image Awards, the fact is, if the black community wants equality and integration, Dash suggests they should do away with programming channels and events that are skewed to black performers only. She further explains that by doing these exclusives only points out the hypocrisy shown by people like Mrs. Smith.
You speak of this sprinkling programming from yesteryear is demonstrative that either you weren't around in the 70s/80s or you've completely forgotten some of the other programs like the black version of All in the Family, The Jeffersons. Perhaps you should watch Antenna TV, as you will see that many shows addressed the issues of the day back then - many had mixed or solely black casts like Good Times. The Facts of Life, Different Strokes, Fresh Prince. The list goes on and on. So to say there was a sprinkling is more than a bit misleading.
Historically, during the Civil Rights Movement (since we're talking history) many of the movement's young student organizers had to convince the black communities to engage in efforts to pursue integration including the right to vote in Jim Crowesque elections in places like Selma.
If you study the the South Boston Busing in the early seventies, many families from the predominantly black areas of the metro area, were equally upset about their children being sent to the white schools as the whites were about sending their kids to black schools. The same for Arkansas (Little Rock) and other areas throughout the country that dealt with the hand-to-hand combat caused by school integration and busing. Yes, the funding was uneven - if not, completely horrific; however, those situations were dealt with via replacing superintendents who were nefarious in their distribution of funds.
Their communities were de facto segregation due to the difference in economics as well as the great White flight to the suburbs. Additionally, many families back in the day made a conscious choice to live in enclaves, surrounded by their extended family members as they turned to family members for a variety of reasons - like babysitting. Many large and small cities have ethnic-centrism. You see this with other culture groups: Hispanic, Italians, Irish, Germans, et. al. -- it's not just a black thing. These other minorities seldom create exclusive networks meant to isolate from others.
Perhaps you are right in the statement where you said they created their own culture; however, if they want complete integration in the perceived 'white' society, then segregatory outlets like BET have to go.

You made some good points but I do believe it takes diligence to review history with unbiased views. Even though most historical events are documents under certain biased views..but ill get to the point..
Hypocrisy is all around this issue.. Especially since Ms. Dash has appeared on BET several times.. Along with attend NAACP awards.. So I have a hard time respecting her opinion when her actions don't reflect her current views.
And you are were right, I was not around in the 70's..but that's not the point .. And I see so many people make this point when it comes to "equality".. you shouldn't be able to list all the black TV shows you know.. Unless you can remember every show geared towards whites during this time. I'm not defending what BET is today.. But they used to provide news and a political/social concience that kept people better informed about their community.
I say all that to end at this ..and please understand this.. Segregation occurs weather or not it is the law.. The NAACP, HBCUs and other organizations were established because blacks had noone to advocate for their needs..In history blacks have been consistently disenfranchised.. And because of this have in turn established means to support their own communities .. Developed their own trade (Google black wallstreet).. Just remember. The main stream society continued while blacks were segregated to their own communities.Once blacks were allowed to legally participate in society as equals.. They are attempting to assimilate to a society designed without their cultural influence. This is why even today we as a country ..struggle with "integrating" ..
I agree we should work to improve ways as a society to integrate different cultures.. But it doesn't need to diminish the fact that our country would have been ok for blacks to become the new American indian.. It was because of the hard work of these black organizations that forced the country to check its concience ..
I also forgot to add that many of those Boston families were like those of the south .. They were scared of integration because it was change.. And ... Who would want to send their kid to a school afraid they might be attacked by not just other students but adults.
Well spoken, 11:38AM, but please refer to other Black leaders like Malcolm X and fractions that splintered from the King's Civil Rights Movement. They had no intention of integrating the Black communities into the White society. They dissuaded their brethren from integration and further developed Black-Centric idioms and philosophies that forged an even greater gap within the racial unrest. The segregation by these leaders was encouraged. However, the Black communities today are upset about this segregation when it comes to something like the Oscars.
The Oscars are judged by the peers in the film industry. It is not judged on equality and ethnicity. It is based solely on performance. The Smiths are simply drumming up more divisiveness rather than letting this Oscar season inspire them to produce Oscar-worthy projects. If they did so, they would find that more Black entertainers would be recognized in the Oscar categories.
Furthermore, actors like Sidney Poitier did not make these statements when he was one of a dozen actors vying for such an accolade. He has even been quoted to say that he, like Dash, would rather win an Oscar on the merits of his acting excellence rather than be an affirmative action trophy.
11:41AM you are correct again, they were scared due to the changes; however, many were also used to the enclaves they created in order to have familial support. The busing situation was ridiculous and it proved to be a much more explosive element than legislators thought in its planning process.
One man you might want to look into is Thomas Sowell and his thoughts on Affirmative Action. I think you'll find his ideas stimulating and provide a unique outlook. Whether you agree with him or not, his words do resonate.

10:06AM, If you're not on level playing field it's because Life IS NOT Fair and whoever gave you a memo to the contrary is lying to you. It is up to you to make or not make your mark in the world. It is up to your own willingness to pay the price to achieve success. Too many people in this world feel entitled to this or that. And that's simply NOT TRUE. The fact is, if you use your own talents and find your place/calling in the world, you realize, there is no field to be leveled. There's only your own success resulted from your own uniqueness that really counts in this world.
