Advocates, critics of fracking turn out for hearing on bills

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Dozens of supporters are showing up for a Senate hearing on legislation that would limit natural gas drilling in Maryland.

By 6 p.m., Tuesday the hearing had yet to start but residents of western Maryland, where the hydraulic drilling method commonly known as fracking would be targeted, were eager to share their concerns.

The worries range from public health risks to threats to the quiet, rural environment. Others fear excessive truck traffic will destroy the area’s roads.
