Should States reduce the amount of time unemployment benefits are extended, in order to trim their budgets?

YYYYEEEESSSS! It also entices people to look harder for jobs considering that their benefits will run out sooner. Many (not all), don't look until the 99weeks are almost up. I'm not saying all, but I would bet the majority do this. Why look when you know the check is coming? That's the mentality that's killing this country. Another option would be that those on unemployment MUST show that they are actively looking for a job by showing a form from interviews or whatever. And it would have to be within their experience.
We have thousands of people illegally crossing our boarders every day to take jobs the "chronic unemployed" are too good for and won't work for a) that little, b) in that environment, c)without the benefits they want ... etc, etc, excuse, excuse. Take the handouts away, get them off the dole, and watch the stream of illegals wanting what's to good for our citizens so they can have a better life slow to a trickle.
Employers, including local Governments, pay unemployment tax on every American working for them. This is how it is normally funded. When employers hire foreign workers, they are exempt from paying any unemployment tax for those workers. The fewer Americans working, the less money goes into the Unemployment Insurance Fund. The next time you go to the beach, take note of the percentage of foreign workers you see. Now, when all the troops come home and can't get jobs, how will the States get money to pay them Unemployment Insurance benefits?
It's a little self defeating for the President to promise tax credits for employers who hire returning veterans when the State is giving employers a financial incentive not to hire an American.
unemployment money dosent come from the gov, nor is it a handout, its paid through company's. There are no jobs...except the ones taken by millions of illegals. Look at all the companies hired by you HOA's to maintain your communities....all illegals while their wives and gf's draw WIC and welfare and go to our schools for free!
Eliminate unemployment benefits all together, lose your job too bad get another one, if one job is not enough to support you get a second job, get off your lazy ass and work.
Studies have shown that those on unemployment don't start looking seriously for a job until they have only three to four weeks of benefits left. Therefore, many will draw unemployment for nearly the entire time allowed and not even LOOK for work as long as they know "the check's in the mail." I recall a client I worked with once saying how glad she was to be able to start getting unemployment so she "can work on my garden & house train my new puppy." And there are others who are "working under the table" & getting unemployment as well. Kinda makes ya mad, doesn't it? Most clients with whom I have worked consider this to be free money with no strings and no conditions.
i'm 64 and had to use the unemployment benefit once for about 13 wks.
i got a new job and hated taking that money. i did need it at the time and was thankful it was there.
i do know many people on unemployment "pretend" to look for a job and many know how to "work the system". this is unfortunate for those who don't do this.
there are job openings even in this poor economy. it's up to you to look (seriously) and you will get a job. if you want you can find a need and fill it. create your own economy. just don't continue to live off others because you can.
12:09, I like your comment. For those of us who have never experienced what it's like to be unemployed, we have no clue. It is very hard to find ANY job now, including hamburger-flipping. Yes, I believe that unemployment needs to be extended. There are so many families living paycheck-to-paycheck. What are they to do when they have nothing left?
I bet there is more to the story than you are revealing. Since you are an employer, it is no surprise you are against unemployment, for any reason.
You don't include the job description for which he was hired or if the certain job he would not do was added to his responsibilities after being hired.
You presented in the best light for yourself, which is understandable.
But since he was granted benefits not only once, but twice since you appealed, a shadow is cast upon you.
Not everyone makes a good employer and the same can be said for employees.
Personally I don't believe you. Which I am sure is of little consequence to you but you are the one who offered your story on this site.
They come in all the time, wanting to fill out an application. When I ask them a few questions, they say: "Oh, I don't want a job, I just need to put in an application."
I say make them work doing something, anything, for their unemployment checks. Also, give them a block of cheese, a block of butter & a bag of beans for the food stamps, no more lobster & steak.

you can draw until whatever you put in during your lifetime is gone, or 26weeks whatever comes second
if you havent put anything in then why should you get to take so much out
Yes stop the madness

I still can't believe the mentality of some of the people on here. They still think jobs are plentiful even thought the stats prove otherwise.
When you find yourselves out of work and unemployment is the only money coming in, you will change your tune.
That old wives tale that if you look hard enough you will find a job just is not true, especially in todays world.
I hope it never happens to you but if it does, come back and eat those words you are saying on here. It may be the only thing you are able to eat.
yes
Yes, yes, yes!! I know that many people will not seriously look for employment until their unemployment checks are about to run out.

if youre unemployed and of working age, you should be put to death. eliminates slackers and gives job openings for executioners!

Yes, there are jobs, but Americans are too lazy to work and they want jobs that pay 20 bucks an hour!

Thank you. You seem like the only sane voice on here.

It's not like there are jobs available to the unemployed. I say let them draw but drug test them.
